I have my connection settings all set up. Specifically, all of the Wi-Fi networks I tend to use are set to connect to "The Internet". I also have a connection set up so I can access the internet when no Wi-Fi is found using a data plan.
The above works in all applications, so when no Wi-Fi is present the apps automatically use my data plan and Wi-Fi if available.
The issue: The Windows Mobile Mail app fails to connect to my Gmail account if I tell it to use "The Internet" and no Wi-Fi is present (meaning it refuses to use the Data Plan, even if it is already connected), but it works just fine if I tell it to use the Data Plan exclusively.
Any idea how I can make it use Wi-Fi if present and fall back to the Data Plan otherwise (just like every other app does by using "The Internet" connection)?
It seems the same thing happens with Windows Live messenger... If I have no WiFi I cannot connect...

Weird! When I have wifi on my mobile still tries continously to use data

Please don't kill me but I want to know
HOW to make use WiFi instead of network on browsers and mail, once I connect?
once you connect you to a wifi network it should be just like using wifi on your computer.
a more specific question or example may allow someone to help you more.
The phone uses Wifi where possible by default. However as my push mail is running over the Vodafone Internet APN I have found some occasions where my browsing session wasn't using Wifi.
So I created my own homepage which tells me the IP address I'm on and works out if it's my wifi router or the Vodafone Internet. It also has all my bookmarks, which is a better than the built in solution from Opera.
If you aren't using the GPRS all day, try NoData which can block all GPRS usage.

Aha, the old friend from MySymbian
Well I'll try that NoData but good to hear X1 wants to use it by default (when connected). I don't use any push messages.
It's a Vodafone ROM thing. if you flash to another ROM it will work fine.
WiFi problem
No man, I have a Vodafone UK Xperia. problem with Wifi initially, then I've ROM it to the generic UK version...now it connects to Wifi but I cannot browse anything with it. The pages don't load and status keeps saying 'loading...' but nothing happens and after a min or so, a message saying that I have to check my internet connection...not connected!

Then you have your Wifi settings incorrect.
How come u say my Wifi settings are incorrect? How can I correct it? In wat way? my laptop etc connects to the Wifi fine...and the phone as well...but it just that the phone doesnt seem to load anything from internet when I'm connected.
First Check if you used the correct Key for your wifi if thats fine then ....
I've never had this problem with the xperia but I have had with other windows mobile phones it was probable because of older versions of windows mobile, if wifi is connected fine go to Settings -> Connections Tab -> Connections -> Advanced Tab -> Select Networks, then select My Network for both drop downs.

Because you are unable to surf the internet, which points to either the settings entered incorrectly (normally when using WEP) or your router needs a firmware upgrade.
Ok here's a complete answer to my question
HOW to make X1 to connect to WiFi ONLY:
Install NoData (thanks for tip!!!)
Turn this on to NOT transfer any network data.
All the browsers I tried (Opera Mini 4.2, Opera Mobile 9.5)
automatically connect by WiFi, so it's great.
Email NOT. But it's enough to
go to email account settings and in advanced server settings instead of your providers network
choose "The Internet".
Violaa, the email account also connects through WiFi.
Hope that helps somebody
Where do i get no data please
There's one topic here called no data cab file!!
Just find it and it's there!
i got problems with my fritzbox 7270, too.
but i solved it.
just set the 802 adaptor manual to your wifi settings.
free ip adress in your segment, gateway, nameserver.
i think its a dhcp problem, with my 7270.
Hi there,
I have a question about an annoying problem that I've only managed to find one (unanswered) question to on the web.
I am currently using WM6.1 and I use to read email from my Hotmail account, amongst other things. The problem is that the messaging client ALWAYS tries to download my mail via 3G/GPRS even when there's a WiFi connection available. This occurs both when I initiate the send/receive using TouchFlo 3D or from within the mail client.
Connection manager is, as far as I'm aware, configured correctly, and PIE/Opera/weather will all happily use WiFi to connect to the internet, only using my data connection when WiFi isn't available.
The same results occur with connection manager configured in either of the following ways:
Internet Connection = "My ISP" settings with 3G modem connection
Work Connection = Default "My Work Network" settings
WiFi Access Point = Connects to Internet
Network Card = Connects to Internet
OR
Internet Connection = "My Work Network" with 3G modem connection and "This network connects to the internet" enabled
Work Connection = As Internet Connection
WiFi Access Point = Connects to Work
Network Card = Connects to Work
Interestingly, if I disable my data connection and enable WiFi I CAN send/receive mail over the WiFi connection, so it seems like the data connection is being used in preference to the WiFi one.
Is this a known issue or am I doing something wrong?!
Thanks,
Mike
Known issue and it is a pain as I don't have any mobile coverage in the house but I do have a wifi network but can't sync hotmail through Wifi
Same frustrating issue here. Hate it.
Even tried the modaco nodata hack so that windows live didn't even know that I had data, and with wifi going great it just says there is no connection. Pretty retarded.
yes mines too there should be away to change this Setting.
This is a real pain for sure. But I have experienced that if I turn off the phone copletely and then connect to the internet via WiFi hotmail does sync via the WiFi-connection. Just thought that I would mention this as a possible last resort.
It may also give some ideas to people trying to fix this... shortcoming.

Hmm strange I will have to try this out.
Thanks!
any Updates?
I have this same problem as well
The only way seems to be to turn your phone off and then use Wifi.
oh i will try it so basically turn the Phone on Airplane Mode
Hi,
I've got a Touch Cruise 09, having upgraded from the original Touch Cruise. With that old phone, I had it configured (somehow) to use a Wifi connection as default, but if there was no current wifi connection it would initiate a data connection to my cell provider. That way, when at home or work I could manually connect to a wifi AP then browse the net, download email, etc over that connection, but when I was out and about it would start a data connection.
But with this new Touch Cruise, I can't get it to use wifi for syncing email. Even if I have a wifi connection, it initiates a gprs data connection. (This works, but it costs me). It does however behave like the old phone for browsing the net using Opera.
So basically, how do you assign what connections different programs use? The whole My Work and Internet concepts have always confused me on WM/WinCE devices, but I suspect its something to do with that.
BTW, I'm using MS Windows Live to do the email syncing... I've got a hotmail email address. But I can't find anywhere in the Win Live setup to specify the connection.
Anyway, thanks for any help!
Hey,
Is it that you do not want to use your data connection at all? Because if that is the case you can use a program called "NoData". On my phone I just use my WiFi connection and no GPRS or any other kind of data connection (I am a cheap ass user).
Grtz
Nope, I want to use wifi for when I'm at home, and cell phone data fro when I'm out and about.
At the moment it ALWAYS initiates a cell data connection, even if I'm at home and have a working wifi connection open.
My old phone used the wifi if it was there, or would then start a data connection. The new one doesn't.
please. no flaming!
I have been using windows mobile for YEARS.. since the old compaq 6600..
I STILL DON'T GET CONNECTION SETTINGS?!
I just want to watch a stupid youtube video!!! I connect and open youtube, it shows me search results and when i click on a vid, it just sits there connecting for EVER and i never see the vid!!!
So I'm using the new AT&T Pure and I have a cooked rom. No big deal. I have an unlimited data plan so using 3g data is not a big deal. But I don't have good service at my house.
So, can someone please direct me to a good wiki or microsoft doc that CLEARLY explains networking via 3g vs. Wifi in windown mobile!?!?!
At&t uses a proxy server with their MediaNet connection. Correct?!
If i connect with my wifi and it connects to my WORK NETWORK, and I have THAT set to connect to the internet, then what?!
why don't my applications (like YOUTUBE and FACEBOOK and OPERA) use the fastest connection automatically?!?!
there used to be a "disable proxy" and "enable proxy" program running around... what was it for?! to disable the proxy server settings on the MediaNet network?! why do you need that to use the wifi?! the wifi network adaptor connects to the work network which connects to the internet without a proxy!?
i'm a Microsoft Systems Administrator.. I have been working with Servers for YEARS.. i have SETUP ISA servers, configured routers and HP ProCurve switches and the likes of such for YEARS!!! Why does MS have to make windows Mobile Networking so freaking complicated!!!!
Is there a way of making the HD2 use wireless only when connected to a wireless connection and useing the Data connection only when wireless is unavailable?

start/settings/wireless controls/menu/connections..
then select..
you can download 'nodata' on here and use it to disable data connection when you are not using it..
I had to disable the proxy server for my 3G service provider and set the Broadcom 802.11 DHD Network Adaptor to connect to "The Internet". I did the same to my email accounts.
now it switches automaticly if wifi is on and if not it always uses 3G.
It will still connect to 3G when I wake up the phone but that's because some background apllications (like internet time and location) only seem to work over 3G. And probably for a reason.
Just gave it another try. Wifi takes over (and auto-disables) 3G connection fully. Twitter and Weather are updated fine using Wifi.
Just had a read about 'nodata' but that isn`t what i was looking for.
Ideally when in wi-fi range phone should use wi-fi.
when out of wi-fi range data connect connects
when you return to wi-fi it reconnects to wi-fi and drop data
i.e wifi connected = no data connection allowed
no wi-fi connection = data connection allowed
Basically, you need to leave the wifi on all the time for what you're asking, and that will destroy your battery life!
You can set it to not notify you of finding wifi connections in range, but it will constantly be looking for them (see All Settings, Sounds & Notifications). When it finds the one that you have told it it can use (you can only have 1 of them if you do it this way), it will start to use it. Once wifi has connected, your phone simply won't use the data connection.
It's that simple, but I'd highly recommend against it.
it's normal on mobile phones to only turn wifi on when you need it .. all phones with wifi I owned worked that way. And like johncmolyneux already said the reason is battery life and the constant searching for networks would lag your device with other operations.
I don't blame people that they keep confusing this device with a notebook as it almost is one, but then again a notebook only lasts a few hours with wifi on..

I belive this is what I need to do.
I travel between a few sites with wifi, what setting do I actualy need to change? you say "then select" but what? sorry for sounding dense.
or when your phone is in range and connects to wifi, does it automaticly use the wifi not the data conenction?
