Stock up on those 3G handsets, folks -- they could become very valuable commodities here in the next few weeks. As part of an ongoing series of spats between wireless giants Qualcomm and Broadcom, the US International Trade Commission has ruled that handsets containing Qualcomm 3G chipsets (and that's a whole heck of a lot of handsets) that are manufactured starting today may not be imported into the US. By all accounts, this appears to be much more than legal posturing on Broadcomm's part -- a ban is a ban -- and we've gotta believe this'll resolve itself right quick. But if for whatever reason it doesn't, get ready for an eBay free-for-all in a gloomy, scorched-earth future where the only high speed handsets are pawned for thousands of New Dollars on the black market.
WASHINGTON -- The U.S. International Trade Commission on Thursday imposed a partial ban on the imports of third-generation, or 3G, cellular phones using Qualcomm Inc.'s microchips in a ruling over a patent dispute between the company and rival Broadcom Corp.
The decision means that major handset makers using Qualcomm's microchips in their 3G phones will not be able to import new models into the U.S. after June 7. New phones that are of the same model as those manufactured before June 7 will still be allowed into the country.
.... wait... if they ban Qualcomm 3G, then we'd have NO new 3G handsets ever. How would the US band that? Does Broadcom make CMDA/WCDMA chips as well?
For the love of god, banned.
If you do some research on it, it comes down to BS if you ask me. What this means is that yes no NEW phone models can be shipped into the USA but phone that where built before june 7th can still be shipped so for ****s sake i hope this does not **** up me getting my kiaser!!!

is it devices built before june 7th or devices that are already on the market before june 7th?
I think it means devices that are already on the market, not just stock which has already been built.
I'm not sure how much this will hurt qualcomm, but it's more likely to hurt broadcom with less users available.
European wireless use is growing fast and hugely more so in the ASEAN nations so I think that if this ban continues then we'll see some developments that you guys just have to watch enviously. Good for us but bad for you

This will probably hit Qualcomms shares more than anything. You'll find the presure of handset companies on Qualcomm will ensure this issue is resolved ASAP.
There are loads of other chipset suppliers for GSM/GPRS/WCDMA/HSPA radios and baseband. TTPCom, TI, NI, Broadcom, ADI, Phillips etc all have some market share but nowhere near as much as Qualcomm.
Gav.

This info is not true, I done care if it's from Uncle Sam. Go here and see that nobody else in the Americas use the 2100 UMTS Mhz but T-Mobile USA and Brizal, which is in South America http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UMTS_frequency_bands ....! Scroll all the way to the bottom, this is how false info get spreading around on the web from people we think we can trust. What's on SonyEricsson "Internal Computer System" is what counts to me 850/900/1700/1900/2100 MHZ UMTS. Another thing, AT&T may not even carry the xperia X1a or X1i, none at all.........!

Xperiancers only said that units are leaving the factory from September 30. And if they are being shipped out from Taiwan, yes, it can take 10 days to reach Europe via ship. Then it may take a couple more days for stores to get it out to their customers or on the shelves.
Whine all you want, but we don't quite have transporters yet.
If you want it faster, you could always bribe someone to get it FedEx direct from the factory.

Actually SE didn't lie. on the 30th the phones left the factory. And it's already available in Sweden. Did you think they would ship at midnight of the 30th and be available in stores the next minute? There is a matter of travel time and administration, you know. Also, if it's made in taiwan, that does not mean you'll be able to buy it there straight away. As already explained, Sweden, UK and Germany are the first to get it. So calm down!

So,
My X1i arrived from Clove yesterday. It is a thing of beauty, pure and simple.
I got it in silver and it looks like a Vertu with Windows Mobile and touchscreen... ; )
I was a little put off by the fact the box was not sealed, and, there was a scratch on the side of the phone! I am assuming that someone was checking things in the box and did it then.. Not cool...
Keyboard is OK, gets a little taking used to . Not horrible, but not as easy as the 9502/TYTN II/Treo 750. However, It's not a dealbreaker by any means...
Anyways, display is amazing, and, I'm happy to say I get a pretty strong "H" signal here in Chicago. However, if I don't manually set the networks to 850/1900, and leave it on 'Auto" for the band settings, I only get "G" as in gprs. Getting between 600 and 1200kbps on dslreports. The same as with my I-Mate 9502
Build quality is good. Not amazing. There is a little wobble between the keyboard and main display when closed, and the optical joystick rattles around when there is any movement with the phone.
Bought a Tumi phone case yesterday and it fits well.. I'm thinking that the silver is easily scratchable, so I probably have to be careful..
Other than that I think the phone is pretty damn cool. By far the best WM phone I have ever owned.
Feel free to ask any questions...
Dbond
*UPDATE*
For some reason, the signal on my X1 was great the first day, but since then has been pretty shoddy. It fluctuates between 3G, EDGE, and GPRS. The "G" icon actually pops up... I haven't seen that in years... I get less bars than I did with my 9502... Not sure what's going on, if it's a software or hardware issue... Noticed that when I get 1-2 bars on HSDPA and switch to EDGE signal is stronger, but not by much...
WTF! i preorder Silver, and Clove sent me black!
is Silver shinny, like chrome?
Silver is more like gunmetal. Nice, but will scratch very easily.
Did you talk to Clove? I have to e-mail them about the scratch..
How is your HSDPA coverage?
talk to clove about what?
i dont really care what color, i just happy to have X1!
but WTF! i preorder silver, i expect to get silver, not black!
i really perfer Silver, i might sell black X1 and get Silver USA version when available.
HSDPA is great, did 2 speedtest.com/mspeed.com and both time get around 980kb!
Lol @ dbond. Moving from a 9502 to the Xperia. You might be as nuts as me paying way too much out of pocket for phones. Hopefully the Xperia will be a much better experience (no pun intended) for you than the 9502 has been for the average owner. I'd love to try out an X1, but I'm still gunshy after dumping so much cash on the 9502.

Motionmind,
Yes, I dumped a crapload of cash on (2) 9502's Sold my first, then rebought it after my 3rd TYTN II didn't cut it. Got used to the VGA screen. Before that it was the Eten X800 and M800...
The X1i is awesome, but, I didn't think the 9502 was all that bad, especially after the 6.1 upgrade. Actually, liked it quite a bit, but, couldn't resist the X1.
IMHO, X1i is dope, but 9502 isn't far behind, especially if you know how to tweak it....
Wait till the price drops on the X1i, then get it...
Even though I'm broke, I'm keeping the 9502... Still the first phone I used that lived up to the hype...
good stuff dbond what service you using it with it would be nice if you could tell the x1 when you want it to use the hsdpa or switch back to edge. Like if your using an messanger use edge cuz you don't need a fast connection for that and then when your browsing the net it switches to hsdpa so you get what you need to get and get off line
i really want the x1i in sliver
it would be great if you made an invisible shield for it
the 9502 looks like a nice phone it kinda reminds me of a sidekick

Meh...I'm waiting for the Fuze. The x1 screen is just too small for me to care that it's WVGA. Now, if they'd hurry and get a Touch HD Pro out the door, I'll have to have a serious argument with my wallet.
Guys,
One thing I've noticed is that with both HSDPA and EDGE, my signal is weak... Worse than TYTN II and I-Mate 9502...
The phone switches automatically to HSDPA and EDGE, You can choose either or, but not when to "switch" on a dime...
Motionmind, Fuze is gonna be dope!
I meant to ask you dbond...I know the X1 screen is recessed but how does it compare to the 9502? Ie...recessed more or less than that?
Do you still recommend silver? I want that one too because I thought maybe black would scratch and show silver underneath. I am waiting for the x1a version because I need 850.

actually plans are about the same ..... 3 is $18 on 49 cap so by the time you add in the 1GB its about $8 more than voda- but 3 have more value in the cap (if you have friends on 3 like i do- dont know anyone on voda)..... either way, both pretty good....
Except that it is already out on voda (with a later release of the processor), and no exact release date for 3.
Also, only the black version will be available on 3. The only compensation is that the 3 version has more RAM . . .

What is the difference in the processor?
3 always bring their phones out later than the competition. They say it's because they test theirs more throughly before releasing.
Just Googled the difference between the two processors.
A. There is no difference.
"It is because of an patent infringement of Qualcomm with Broadcomm patents presumably with something related to video compression."
The 3 version of the Magic has more RAM:
3 Magic: 288 MB RAM
Voda Magic: 192 MB RAM
I'm just wondering, with the merger between 3 and Vodafone do you think that if you got a phone with 3 it would be able to use the Voda towers without roaming and having to pay extra? since they pretty much are the same thing now.
And anyone know when Telstra will release this phone. I saw some stuff about them making a deal to sell it with HTC back in february but haven't really seen anything about it recently. I'm just worried about reception as when I was with Optus a few months ago I rarely had reception at my house (but with Telstra it is full bars)

This is the statement on the merger in relation to the networks:
Will Vodafone and 3 share their networks, once the merger is complete?
There are no immediate changes to 3 and Vodafone’s existing network arrangements.
Will 3 continue to use Telstra’s 850MHz network?
Yes, the roaming agreement, which allows 3 customers to roam onto parts of Telstra’s network, remains in place.
Will 3 customers be able to roam onto the Vodafone network (rather than the Telstra 850MHz network)?
No, 3 customers will continue to use the 3 network and roam onto parts of Telstra’s network via the existing roaming agreement.
As for reception you can check here:

Hmm.. After doing more reading about the HTC 3 version vs. Google Powered Voda version I'm seriously leaning towards the 3.. what about you guys? The one thing that didn't seem too clear from my brief look at the 3 website was whether their roaming charges were included on the cap.. ie whether roaming would eat through your voice/data cap faster or would be an additional cost on top of the $99 + data pack that you're already paying.
All these hardware variations and odd licencing deals have made this very very confusing. Oh - are the marketplaces centralised or are they operated by the carrier? i.e. would the 3 marketplace and the voda marketplace be different?
for 3, roaming charges are not included in the cap... it is on top of the cap
yeah all depends on where you go- i live in melbourne and rarely go outside metropolitan melb. last bill i had something like 52cents of roaming charges....

I am quite sure it would be a centralised market place. It would be too hard for the carriers to create their own, and include all the applications that are present in the current Market.
What would be interesting is if the carriers could develop a way to bill the apps at the end of the month instead of signing up for a Google account.
Paid apps is rumored to have been released in Australia too! http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/forum-replies.cfm?t=1213884

Thankyou for letting me know about that, I was planning to go on a cap with 3 and get a Magic but I live in a roaming area so I definitly won't be doing that now.
Thanks for answering my question stevo86, the 3 link tells me I have to roam in my area. Don't wanna get the Voda version cause it has less RAM.
Looks like I'll probably have to buy the thing outright and stick in my current Telstra SIM. Kinda expensive for a kid who works one shift a week at Hungry Jacks
hum, came across this .... pricing on the official three site.
http://store.three.com.au/mobilesOverview.aspx?productId=1318&capCost=0
any idea what's happening with the x-series suppose to be half price?? anyone?
eep
Argh.. been counting on the data-packs being half price for my budgeting Balls.
They had a blog post/review/sales pitch yesterday (11 June) but still didn't offer a release date more specific than 'mid june'.. how much more middle do they want to be before being specific? Geez..
I just contacted 3 Customer Support and the operator was able to offer me 3's preferred release date for the HTC Magic: June 17th. So if everything goes well, then they'll be in stores on Wednesday! I expect their pricing page for the Magic to be officially linked and listed in amongst all the other available handsets on this date.
The kind operator was unfortunately unable to let me know what the outright price of the handset will be (which is what I'm most interested in, at present). The handset is shipping from mobicity.com.au for just over AU$800, this being the same price for both the Vodafone (white) and the 3 (black) versions. I have not yet confirmed that MobiCity's 3 version has more memory than their Vodafone version. It seems strange to get almost 100MB for free, just by not choosing Vodafone.
Depending on how impulsive I am feeling on Wednesday, I may or may not rush out and buy one. I am very excited about a phone OS as flexible and developer friendly as Android, but I'd really prefer to have a physical keyboard and a 3.5mm audio jack. I would be buying the HTC Magic for Android, not for the hardware (which is admittedly a zillion times more sleek and comfortable than the Dream, yuck!).
Just adding to the above comments: I just spoke to 3 too and was likewise told they're officially launching on Wednesday. He also confirmed that the 1gig X-series would be $10 and the shop would reflect that at launch. He also said that the phone should be hitting their warehouses on that day so they'll be ready to start dispatching as it comes, 2 working days for delivery.
However in my impatience I had also called the three store in Northland over the weekend and they said they think they'll get it in at their store "in a couple of weeks", by the sounds of which online sounds like the way to go.
jockeyrhyme: Not sure about mobility but if you look on the vodafone and 3 websites and click up the magic on the their online stores and click 'specifications', it does show the difference in RAM.
3.5mm would be nice but so far I never really use phones for audio unless I'm using the speaker and going for a stroll lol so it's not an issue. With my first PDA (2nd smartphone), I chose it partially because it had a keypad too. Then as the keys started giving me trouble after a lot of abuse, I started using 3rd party finger-friendly soft keyboards. After I got used to it I was constantly wishing I didn't have the keypad so that it'd be a smaller phone. Much prefer to be without a physical keyboard these days. Not willing to wait around any longer because I really need to change plans regardless.

- hummingbird (faster and less power consumption)
- s-amoled
- HSDPA+ support
- hopefully the fixed the stupid buggy "multitouch" panel
the only con really is if its more locked down like the current galaxy s

I can almost guarantee the touchscreen will be fixed. Galaxy S phones have tracking for up to 5 fingers at once, accurately and smoothly so if it's almost the same screen technology, it won't be a problem.
Aside from that... assuming the screen technology is the same except for the contour design, it'll probably be another pentile matrix (RGBG) AMOLED... which I'm sorry to say is far inferior to LCD's for reading text =(
so can some one officially say this is a TMO 4g phone? Im stupid when it comes to bands

I thought hspa + was tmobiles "4g"
I feel the phone is not a big enough jump from it's predecessor looks and specs are good but it doesn't hold any wow factor. It seems just another smartphone imo shame really.
I agree we are on the verge of dual core phones with smarter power consumption....

Well, if there´s CyanogenMod support, that´s what counts for me

Have to agree. Nothing wrong with the phone, it seems OK. It just doesn't seem to really step things up, like the N1 did.
However, I hold out hope. There were rumors about Sammy having a dual core flagship, dropping right after the Nexus S. Rumor was the delay in Gingerbread had to do with it not being designed to support dual core processors, and the Honeycomb crew had to get together with the Gingerbread and make it play nice. Again, all just rumors. If true, I'm waiting to see their flagship device hit the FCC, and hopefully with pentaband hardware.
sooo temping!!! My Nexus 1 has a broken screen so i need a new phone but no duel core
It's £550 SIM free!
That's put me right off.
#Fail_______-
No Hspa+
No 720P recording
No SDcard slot
No Dual Core
Come on!!!
I'm not jumping ship just yet...
