Skype Question? - 8125, K-JAM, P4300, MDA Vario General

I know that there is a tool released that allows skype to work through the earpiece and not the speakerphone on the wizard. I just had a couple of questions related to that before I purchase a wizard.
If you leave the tool running, will you be able to talk through the earpiece on incoming calls?
Does skype perform well on the wizard? Compared to landlines, cell phones?
Will skype work on EDGE?
Can you use a prepaid SIM on an unlocked Wizard?
My goal is to use the unlimited data prepaid plan ($20/mo.) and skype (around $60 a year paid in advance) to have an unlimited data/talk plan on a wizard. Any thoughts, suggestions? Thanks.

I can answer what I know for yah.
Does Skype work well on the Wizard?-Yes, IF you overclock your Wizard to 247MHZ or higher, the stock 200 MHZ simply will not run Skype well enough to use. Overclocking is easy, and is fine if kept under 260MHZ.
Will Skype work on EDGE?-Again yes. The installer and documentation says that WiFi or 3G is required, but that is simply not true. It will take a few moments to load your contacts and connect to the Skype network, but calls will work fine.
Can you use a prepaid SIM in the Wizard?-Yes, you Lokiwiz or the Wizard Service Tool to SIM and CID unlock your Wizard once you buy it.
I cannot comment on the other stuff, but it does indeed work, and works well.

Thanks for the response. You answered most all of the critical questions for me. I know a headset can correct the others, so if all else fails I can just get one of those.

I'm running skype on default clock speed, and it works fine. Little slower, but not much, usable. Not sure how. Rom is the one Zoki made, i think is NBD, or something like that, i both it like that from him and works great

I prefer Fring.com u can use msn, skype, icq, google talk, sip.
If u buy a phone number with skype u can receive calls too
And u have add-ons too, like facebook, fringme chat, gmail notifier, orkut, vtap videos, yandex.mail.
Hope u guys like it!
btw works with almost all phones

Would this be possible, Vonage on Cingular 8125

Would it be possible to only use medianet unlimited with Vonage, and dump cingulars over priced voice plan. I mean, being that Vonage operates soely on your internet connection, why wouldn't it work on medianet or Cingulars PDA plan, vica versa. Pitcure it, you get unlimited calls to US and Canada, all the goodies like call waiting, three way calling and caller I-D, all for $29.95. That beats out Cingulars 450 daytime, 5000 night and weekends, for $39.95 any day.
So, is it possible? And if not, why?

I don't think that it would work because I believe Vonage is VoIP which is kinda like skype and the GPRS network isn't fast enough for that. Feel free to correct me (anyone?) if i'm wrong though.
But what about edge, wifi, or 3G. Wouldn't those be fast enough?

edge is the same as GPRS, its the cellular data network. Edge I don't believe is fast enough. Wifi is fast enough, but you have to overclock your phone in order for it to actually work well...or at all. Not sure what 3G is, so I can't comment on that.
It's theoretically possible. There's a version of SJPhone that works with Vonage and runs on the WM5. All you need is a soft phone on your vonage acct and SJPhone should be able to connect over GPRS or WiFi.

Can you elaborate on this a little more. What exactly is soft phone?
A softphone costs $10/mo on your Vonage account and works with software on your PC. The Vonage interface device isn't required. Every time you connect to the internet with your PC, no matter where in the world this is, your softphone number is available. SJPhone is software that runs on WM5 that allows you to connect to your softphone number on Vonage in the same way.
Alright I have the software SJPhone, I found the beta version for WM5. And I am sure that even before I install it that there will be some configuration required for vonage.....
I have gone and google'd..... These look like the setup instructions....

Cingular is one step ahead of you... Kind of. There was an article about 2 weeks ago and cingular said they don't mind that people are using VOIP on their network. But Edge isn't fast enough. I have Skype on my device and running it via Edge is worthless, so get yourself a Hermes adn move to a 3g(umts) city and Voila, your golden!
I just got back from houston and they're selling the HTC TyTn for $1,099.99. You can get it on ebay for $779.99 with 29.99 shipping from Cali.
I have activated a vonage softphone but I am having trouble with the configuration. If anyone had some light to shed on the subject that would be great. The guide I am looking at looks like it is just about to turn 2 years old.
IT WORKS!!!!!!!! well I initialized a call I can't really test it though cuz the wife is sleeping and if I make the phone ring too much she'll get peeved. The above configuration is good, just don't bother with the proxy stuff just put the domain in..... i followed their screens just a little too well.
what connection u using it on?
The only issue with SJPhone I saw was, like skype, it would be "speakerphone only". I'm guessing GPRS would be fine for the connection if you use a low speed audio codec.
Well I lied i made 1 phone call and that was it it doesn't work now I don't know what i did
Is this any help?
SJLabs: Vonage on Pocket PC thread
Very helpful now I no longer recieve the "Nat/Firewall" Error. Thanks for the info. I will do more testing during the day tommorow and I will post my results. I am currently using a T-Mobile MDA with the new OEM firmware update.
I talked with the wife for 45 mins while using wifi, I used the headset supplied with the phone because I have not figured out how to incorporate my Moto H700 with it, but otherwise it was great. The edge at my house is only so-so, therefore I will say that using this with edge so far has been impossible. When I go to work tommorow I will let you know if it works better where I know there is 100% edge, and when I am not on the fringe of a network.
Theory into practice it would seem. Nicely done matrix849! I'd always wanted to try this but never really had the time to spare.
Seems as though the tytn would be the best way to really test if this would be absolutely possible. I mean with its 3G technology and all.

anyone using skype

I just got an 8525 and want to enable the data only feature via att
Has any one used skype via the 3g net. and does anyone know how may kbytes a typical 10 minute call consumes from the alloted 20 meg >>
Great forum !!
Pogo:
Skype
i,m not sure how much it uses but if you got a 8525 you need a unlimited data plan with that phone cause you are going to use that 20MB up in about 3days, i,m on mine more them my own computer, and yes skype is great in 3G but the new skype with the update sucks..
Yes, don't use the latest version of Skype it has a problem with the Hermes. You need the older beta version. You can download it here somewhere - pushed for time so can't do it for you but searching should find it.
Also, you can of course use it over wifi, that obviously is outwith any data plan you may have.

One thing to keep in mind is that technically, the use of VoIP is against the service terms according to AT&T/Cingular. But for that matter, so is streaming audio, video, games, uploading files, or anything outside of email, web browsing, or corporate network access.
And before people get all up in a tizzy about it, I didn't make the rules, nor agree with them. This came up on the AT&T help forums and someone pointed me to the AT&T TOS document. Basically, unless the "content" is specifically formatted for AT&T devices or meets the "AT&T content standards" it is forbidden.
Those content standards are nowhere to be found on the internet or on the AT&T website, so it's an exercise to the reader to determine what the hell they're talking about.
So I would caution against excessive use of VoIP or leaving TCPMP connected to a stream for 8 hours straight.
But I still use a princely amount of data in a month for general stuff and it's never been an issue. I'm talking on the order of a few gigs per month of transfer. I don't use Skype via 3G.
FYI, this is the CAB you want for use on the 8525:
SkypeForPocketPC-2.2.0.18-Beta.cab
I have installed that version, and it seems to work for test calls. I don't know anyone that uses Skype. I don't have any use for it beyond curiosity. I know it installs and runs fine, however.

EDIT: The Skype file Mike is referring to is found in this thread:

It's a rapidshare link.
Many Thanks.
Got my new phone, unlocked and upgrade via your tools.

Audio works on NEW Skype!!

Skype just released Skype for Windows Mobile 2.5. and the audio works again with the titan/mogul in WM6.1. thought i think it still uses the speakerphone output...but its something!
So how does skype work exactly? I cant google it here from work its blocked, in a nut shell, howmuch, how is it, quality wise and etc?
It's (partially at least) a VOIP application that lets you make voice (and the PC, video) calls over the internet... but also allows you to dial out to regular land-line and cel numbers, not just other Skype users.
This development is really exciting for those of us with really good data plans (unlimited for $15/mo in my case ) because it means I can use Skype to make LD calls without having to burn up airtime or LD minutes, just the (very cheap) Skype minutes.
Yeah I was so happy Skype is finally working again.
How is the quality for international calls?
The quality is more better then ever.
cool, last week i tried to get skype to work but no go ill try and download the new version.

Unlimited internet on cell phone + skype = unlimited talk time?

With the economy getting worse I'm trying to tighten my belt as best as I can. Right now I'm paying a lot to talk on my HTC Wizard using T-Mobile. One idea that popped in my head was to just get unlimited internet access to my phone and then use Skype to talk all I want, given that I pay for Skypes service to make calls to landlines. Course another beauty in this is that I can cancel my home phone number as well.
Here's my questions.
#1 Are there plans to pay for only unlimited internet access, doesn't have to be T-Mobile it just needs to work with my Wizard.
#2 Can signal quality really cause a lot of trouble with Skype?
#3 Does Skype work flawless on my Wizard, and if not explain?
If someone already does this can they give further input about this?
(bit late to reply maybe)
I tried skype in my wizard with T-Mobile.
It works but the processor is a bit slow for skype.
Sometimes I even had to reset the phone...
So, it's not an ideal solution, but it does work.
(for me at least )
skype is free with unlim inet
apart from if you call to real phone numbers
rather then to other computers using skype
if you use skypeout which is what skype call it when you
call a normal phone from skype rather then a skype user
they charge you and to be able to do so at all you
need a skype out account
Isn't there alternatives to using Skype software? The Wizard is buggy is general.
I'm also curious about this for my HTC Diamond.
Here is my solution, it's not free but I think it's resonable! I am using Kaiser with software called AGEPhone mobile 2, and I have a 3G connection with 384k speed, which cost 9,8 euro/month, with a voipstunt account, every deposit like 10 euros, I get 120 days free call to the landline(Finland), and 1 cent/min. to call China from Finland. I am pretty satisfy with the sound quality.
Unlimited Talk time
Try the new data network: zero1mobile. Unlimited data for $70 / month.

Free Skype-to-Skype on 3 (on HD)

Hello all,
If Orange Disconnections team get back up and running this afternoon, I am going to be canceling my Orange contract and it is looking like 3 has the best SIM only plan for me.
My phone is already unlocked, de-branded vi flashing ROM's.
One thing that enhances the draw for me on 3 is the free Skype to Skype calls. I am wondering whether anyone here has tried it and got it set up correctly (Skype and the free calls via 3)
Reading through the 3 help files makes it sound impossible at the moment and a simple search on the Blackstone forum revealed no new information.
Hopefully someone here can enlighten me.
what is the difference between that and free skype to skype calls on wifi?
do they detect it's a skype call over gprs and don't charge you?
or do you have flatrate data and they don't block the ports used by skype ?

From the stuff I have read on the 3 website, they use the data connection over 3G/HDPSA and do not charge you for it when used with Skype calls.
They also mention that you are required to use their own Skype program, not one downloaded from the Skype website. Perhaps that helps with their system.
This is from the 3 website:
"If you put a 3 SIM card into a 3G* mobile from another network you can still make calls, send messages and access the internet, but you can't access Skype.
We’re working hard to fix this. Our aim is that over the next few months customers will be able to insert their 3 SIM card into any popular unlocked 3G mobile and automatically get the right settings for the 3 network. Plus you’ll also receive a link to download the correct version of Skype on 3 – so you can have free Skype-to-Skype minutes forever.
It is important to note that the Skype mobile client must be the version which comes directly from 3 (rather than any other source) in order to be able to get free Skype-to-Skype calls forever."
I am not sure whether this means if I would need to obtain the 3 Skype somehow and use that or some other way.
It is not a huge issue for me. The 3 SIM only deal is the best going even without the free Skype to Skype.
But... it would be nice. I am looking to see if anyone has experience of switching to 3 with a non-3 phone and using their free Skype to Skype service.

Ooohhh, I've just passed through my cancellation with Orange and will be getting my PAC in a few days.
I did use the search... but on this forum only. Trust me to miss such a recent post outside of this one (I don't scoot around too much)
Thanks!
