that's actually the ROM available, the RAM is named as "program" memory which even smaller : 200MB

You mean 256MB?

oh okay, that would make alot of sense, thanks alot, and i did search for it, but i found alot alot of people proving it by reviews, i didnt find any through personal use, expect for this one person, who also said it was less than 384, but thanks to everyone for helping out!

no serious, when you install apps on your storage card, it installs systems files too, on the phone storage, so it always uses the phonestorage

100MB-150MB ramhack

This is a quick blurb that will make a lot of people happy. Remember the ramhack for the G1? Well, the Nexus One only has 218MB memory available to Linux, despite having a whopping 512MB total. Even the Motorola Droid, with 256MB total, has more RAM available to Linux! I asked about this, and romainguy explained on the Android IRC channel:
<coolbho3k> How can the Droid have 256MB of RAM but 230+MB memfree, while the Nexus has 512MB RAM but only 218MB memfree?
<@romainguy_> there's a limitation in the kernel
<@romainguy_> next update should give you 100 or 150 MB back
<coolbho3k> Very nice!!!
<@romainguy_> swetland can tell you more

There we go. A "memhack" kernel update in the next Nexus One OTA should give us an additional 100-150MB RAM. Who wants to try to compile a kernel that does this now?
Did u ask him when the next update is coming out.
is that an official IRC channel? with people that actually work on it or what?

Yes it is, and Romain Guy works for Google.
I wondered what happened to all that memory! I still don't understand why 2 1 is taking so much.
Wonder if that will correct the slight and infrequent animation studdering people sometimes see when moving between home screens and scrolling.
That is awesome, I was so happy to have 512 mb RAM it sucks to hear they dont use half of it, glad to hear they plan to fix that. So this thing is going to be even smoother? Also, we are talking about an official ota from google correct? I wonder why they released it with the limitation...

This is a limitation of the 2.6.29 kernel.
The 2.6.32 kernel fixes this issue, but I guess they haven't worked out all the bugs yet.

Is this like the PS3 where, at launch, they reserved more ram for its OS. Then they released more back to apps (games) with firmware updates Anyway, good news to everyone!
Is this the correct chat room?
http://irc2go.com/pjirc/?net=freenode&room=android
So is there an eta of this official patch from google?
well, what we do want the RAM for, yah for the OS than APPS but whats the deference between the OS and APPs ? well it is complicated as every APP will be running inside a VM made and managed by the OS
What I think : it doesn't matter, we want a good working OS that's fast and nice not free RAM ,that's just there not to be used for any good. If they at Google change it let them do that!
more RAM = less often apps have to be killed to make space for newly launched apps = less processing killing those apps and also more apps stored on memory for quick on-demand launch.

Do all HD2's have 576RAM?

Hi Guys,
Looking to buy a new HD2, just wondering that whether they still carry the hidden RAM? Has anyone brought one recently?
Yes, all HD2s have 576MB of RAM as long as you have the right ROM and radio.

That's not correct.

Yep, just not out of the box. You need the right combination of rom and radio to unlock the extra ram and bring it to 576mb from the default of 448mb if I'm not mistaken..

But it's absolutely correct because it's an answer to the OP, which clearly relates only to new HD2s. Maybe you missed that.
But only new US HD2 have 576MB RAM out the box, all other retail HD2s (not the pre-release) need to the right radio/ROM
So in a nutshell, all new retail HD2s have the RAM but only the US one is activated out the box
please help... on my phone it says total storage capacity 181.47... and total program memory 336.93... how's that... i bought the phone from orange romania... and this is after a hard reset... although in the about page it says... 448 RAM and 512 ROM...

512 rom - minus the space the rom and the radio take up, also minus thee space the rom uses when it installs after a flash.takes about 250-350 meg which leaves you around 200 meg storage space.
448 ram - minus 128 meg for graphics =320 meg program memory.
your figures are exactly what a stock hd2 should show.

64MB Extra Memory on Nexus One

Hi, All
Don't you think it would be sweet, if there was Radio released like the HD2 Update that unlocked 64MB Extra memory for the Nexus One.
The comparison with the Desire would be finished.

It would be nice, but it's already so fast I don't think it would make a difference for the majority of Nexus One users.

Dont understand why you need it. Just looked at my phone with 19 processes running and 200 Mb avail. At any given time I never have less than 100Mb free mem. Does the Sense UI use more memory? Is that why you think we need more?

Sense UI doesn't use much more I usually have 100MB to 200MB free with Sense UI. Also my phone feels much smoother with Sense UI rather than stock. On top of all that, we don't even have all our 512MB unlocked. I think its like 395MB.

HD2, 1GB of RAM?? HuH!?!?

the american version of the hd2 will have more RAM and ROM
These screenshots say 512MB ROM, 1GB RAM... but from what we know it's the opposite (1GB ROM and 512MB RAM), the guy who made the website description most likely screwed up. Not to mention 1GB RAM would be absolutely useless.

yeah even on the htc website it says it will have 1gb of ROM and 5_ _ mb of RAM.... hey I know you say 1gb of ram would be useless, but for the same price -why would you argue with that ? haha....but yeah can we say 'false advertisement' here?.... I am sure there is a complaint to be made, for those of us who already knew it was fake from the beginning it would not be a surprise when we get our hd2 and do not see 1gb of ram...but for the others, they may be like 'wth??!' ....

Current ( European ) HD2 :
-512 RAM

T-mobile ( USA ) HD2 :
-512 RAM
-1024 ROM
Isn't it 574 ram on both versions?
yeah they do but most shipped roms disable the last few sectors of ram for stability reasons i believe, you need a cooked rom to enable the full amount
Yep, but why do they loose stability with more ram?
Loose stability??? I see no difference between cooked rom (576MB RAM) and official 1.66 WWE (448MB RAM).
it probably looses stability in a case of when an application over ranges ram so if there is a block of ram reserved then it may be used for those instances ? I am not sure just trying to think why it would be that way....
Just open lots of apps to fill RAM and again ad again. Nothing happends. Where did U read about instability with 576MB unlocked?
that is not what I was talking about, (opening a bunch of apps)... that does not mean it will over range the ram...
you may be familiar with programming and in such if you say go out of bounds on an array -it will cause some sorts of errors.... This is the type of situation I mean when I said over ranging ram, except it may come in a different form, but when a program basically tries to access more ram than it is allowed or tries to access ram which is non existent then it would normally cause an error....
all in all it is just an example, and I was just trying to think logically of why they would not allow all of the RAM to be unlocked in stock ROMS ...

I concur, I am actually using one right now and in hardware specs it shows the 576mb RAM, 1024mb ROM, and of course the sick 1024mhz processor
as a result of the U.S. version having more ram and rom, its a little bigger..
