How do we install the screen protector?
There's already a layer of clear plastic on my HD (out of the box) that covers the entire screen, inc the buttons and has a cutout for the earpiece. Is this a screen protector ?
I tried putting the screen protector that comes in the box, over my screen, it has nothing to anchor to, there's no earpiece sticking up etc, everything is totally flush thus my query above.
If the thing on the HD is not a screen cover, how on earth am I to install this spare one? Do I need glue? I cannot find anything about it in the manual?
Some clarification would be really welcomed

Do not put glue on you're screen! Damn!
And the "plastic" that's on you're screen, is not the screen protector. It's almost the other way around. If it was glass, if wouldn't scratch, like on the iPhone. So, due to that plastic, it scratches quite easily.
As I do not own the HD yet, I don't know how to apply the screen protector. I would guess it just sticks on.
Could we have some clarification on this please?...
The plastic film that's on your phone in the box is just to protect it (persumably through manufacturing, packaging, transport etc), you need to take that off.
I've never found the HTC screen protectors much good, didn't even bother to try and fit the one that came with the HD. If you search the forums you'll find links to better options.

You prompted me in the right direction. The screen protector is a peel back sticky (dinnt realise that before). I have just installe dit now, was tricky to say the least.
Another reason to be pissed off. You pay a huge sum of money and no glass screen. And no instructions or clarification for the micky mouse screen protector they give you.
Since the HTC Touch HD uses a touch screen, which actually needs you to apply pressure, a glasscreen would be way to "hard" for it to recognize any touching.

so what about the iPhone and iTouch then? its my understanding that they use glass screens, they cannot be scratched and there is no need to be sticking little pieces of plastic all over them
They use capacitive touch-screens. I think they respond to heat, or electricity, meaning that they cannot be used with a stylus, but needs no pressure to work.

Usually we need to have some water applied on the device first, then place the protector over the device. The presence of water will prevent the protector from sticking to the wrong position. Then, using something like a credit card, you repeatedly swipe over the protector in such a way that you maintain the correct position, as well as dispel the water under the protector out. The dispelled water will make the protector stick to the device. The main point is to ensure there is no air between the protector and the screen surface.

Electric current, produced by the big walking batteries we call humans.
Messes with the "capacitance" under the glass of the iPhone and it's recognised as "touching".

Yes , the same technology Samsung used for the F480. A shame HTC didnt choose it either, because it works really well - at least if someone doesnt necessarily want a stylus.
Anyhow, the is the shipped protector an adhesive layer? Could it be easily removed and applied again?
the touch screen works for iphone, without the need for stylus, because the all the buttons are big. on WM devices, once you get past touchflo you are back in the realms of small icons whereby sometimes it's easier to use the stylus.
but the HD still rocks, so far i've only needed the stylus a few times.

Thats what I was referring to previously by "necessarily a stylus".

I actually knew that.
Sometimes I find it hard to explain things, as I am not used to doing that in English.
But, one thing I'm wondering, is that many people keep saying the screen on iPhone won't work if your finger is cold, or wet. A wet finger would just lead the electric current even better, wouldn't it?

i was trying to point out the reason why the HD still, imo, needs one rather than why the iphone doesnt.

Yes and maybe. You can remove it without residue, but I had trouble cleaning it, so I just used another one.

Hi Eaglesteve, are you serious about applying the water ? Are you referring to the official screen protector from htc? i am using its pressure sensitivie adhesive (PSA) and that's it .
Indeed, the original screen protector is pretty good: it is essentially impossible to notice its existance since it is perfectly cut and there are ZERO bubbles if you apply it correctly e.g. carefully without touching the surface and carefully cleaning the screen before. In addition, the "slide" of the finger over the screen is even better and it's very easy to clean - just rub it on your clothes!

Would having a thicker screen protector allow us to make the screen more flush to the trim? I have read that the screen is only recessed 1mm. It seems that we could easily compensate for that with a protector, essentially making the screen flush already?
Is the screen further recessed than I have read--and has anyone had issues hitting the screen perimeters? Scroll bars, X/OK, start menus, outter letters on on-screen keyboards... et al?
I want this (the x1a) to be my next phone, and I think I can deal with the screen, but I would like to make it as close to my original Touch as possible--which has the best recessed touchscreen I have ever used. I can easily hit all the extremities, and scroll, and when I draw on the screen using the Notes application, I can easily draw to all the borders, using my thumb.
With the speediness of this phones rotation, I worry less about the on-screen keyboard, but I find myself wanting to use it a lot... like, for quick messages, and entering data into programs, like a web browser. I use the hardware keyboard for longer emails, texts, or modifying documents.
How has the recessed screen affected you guys?
makes it more difficult to be a one hand touch phone. you need to use the stylus to make selections more accurate. im always using a stylus anyways but it would be a better phone if the screen wasnt recessed.
Well sometimes it is indeed an annoyance but not really all that great. For multiple reasons though. I'm often having hard time using controls on the borders with my finger, I found out it's better to just kind of push at the border itself and thus let only part of the finger on the screen than trying to push it in the border and selecting something farther from the border. Furthermore it makes the screen harder to clean.
Also I've noticed reduced sensitivity around the borders even using the stylus (in Pocket Artist to be exact), is this normal? I have to push a bit more to draw, etc.
However, I can imagine a flush screen wouldn't really fit the design of the phone
Wow, these comments are very disconcerning to me... If the screen is annoying to use, and they keyboard is not as good as the Pro, then why would anyone pay 3x the price to get this instead? I took my Pro back because the Sprint model overheats--the AT&T model has crappy GPS, that AT&T locked down...
I really like what I see in the X1, but if critical WM functions are hard to use without a stylus then that would be a deal-killer for me
to me, i dont think the phone is worth the 800 i paid because i kind of was expecting more. a phone that is an all in one for me. phone, wifi, browse, tethering..... and compact.
dont get me wrong, it does all that i want so far but i think the screen is a little to small. great resolution but screen could of been a bit bigger. i bought the phone on line and so i never really got to physically see it before i bought it. i just went with what was on the specs alone.
also i was expecting more out of the browser... its okay but i just wished it had a full browser with complete flash and java support.
its my first wm device and so i was also expecting more out of the os.
sliding keyboard was one reason i bought this also and so again i was expecting better.... keyboard is okay but i wish it had more key mapping options and key functions. it seems when using the keyboard, i also have to use the stylus.
i guess i was just expecting better for my 800 bucks but then again i havent really tried customizing it such as trying different third party apps or the other cab files.
i think the htc hd would of been a better phone for me but they dont make it for the u.s high speed band. i got what i got and so ill try and make the best of it and see if i can make the most of it.
Yeah, right now, we don't have that many great options in the U.S.
We have the CDMA Omnia, but it's screen is pathetic compared to the HD. It's also quite unresponsive, and very awful around the edges...
We have the CDMA Diamond, which overheats, and has similar screen issues. No SD slot either.
We have the CDMA Pro, which overheats, has similar screen issues, and more defects than you can shake a stick at.
We have the AT&T Pro, that has crippled GPS...
So what the hell is the best phone out there right now or in the near future? It sounds like the X1 just isn't worth it... Maybe if it was $299 with a contract, like the Pro...

The recessed display is the best idea SE had with this phone. I won't even think about the scratches I had on the screen if it were plain like the TouchHD.
By the way, the Xperia has the same price as the Touch Pro here in Austria and it's far the better choice. For me it's all in one and everything I want from a PPC works fine.

The frame is protecting the screen. When the unit is faced downwards on a flat surface it won't let the screen touch it directly, that way you save a lot of scratches.
Also I find the recessed screen very handy with sliders, with my thumb nail I can scroll as fast as I want without worrying loosing the slider. The only problem with the screen so far is the "x" button on the right corner, but I am getting used to it.
A minor advantage is that screen protectors can be fitted more easily and accurately. Of course non-recessed screens have other advantages but nonetheless I am very happy X1s screen.

If the screen were plain it would be scratched by the zipper of my pocket all the time. So the zipper just touches the frame and this doesn't matter.
however it protects the screen from scratches...

Here in the US, the Pro is $199 or $299 with 2-year, and the X1 will be $799. Also, if you put a screen protector on your device, your screen looks perfect. My Touch has zero scratches on the screen, but has one or two on the screen protector..
May I ask why you would ever want to lay your phone down on it's screen? I have never done that on any phone I've owned, PDA or not.

I'm glad to hear you are happy with the screen--but you really have to use your fingernail with the scroll bars? That's pretty weak... like we are going back to the days of the Apache...

Well it's really recessed only a little and I guess it does protect it a bit. I actually had both the touch pro and X1 in hand and then actually chose to go with the X1, they are priced the same here too.

Do you think that if we had a thicker screen protector, could it make the screen flush, and have the same effect as, say, a Touch--with a true flush screen, unlike the Diamond and Pro...
the screen protector would have to be pretty thick to make up the recessed area. not worth the effort.... i think if you buy it, youll just have to try live with it. its really not that bad but would have been more touch screen friendly if it was flush. not a deal breaker for me and the more i use my phone, the more i am getting to like it more... but still not worth the 800 bucks (no phone is worth 800 bucks, i just bought the phone on a whim).
Sorry to say that but the idea is flawed.
Imagine having to handle complex equipment with 3 gloves on your hands... it will be a mess.
Anyway I don't really understand the fuss about flush screens, the only problem I find on XPERIAs recessed screen is the 'x' button on the top right corner and a bit of the 'Start' button. The scrollbars are way too thick to be a problem to operate.
Both problems are solved with time and experience with the device. Imho the protection of the recessed screen outperforms the advantage of easy access on the 'x' button, not to mention that you can just press the ok button to have the same effect.

Can someone please tell me how to apply the screen protector that comes with the phone as it's just a large piece of clear plastic with no instructions how to physically attach it to the display!
It has a peel away backing which is much thinner than the protector.
I struggled to find how this attached when I got mine and have since put hair and smudges on the sticky backing. Can't wait for the new ones to come online mid May.

Just put it on. Work cleanly though, be prepared and do it right the first time.

Did you try this new Brando screen protector, and if so, is it any good?

OK I applied mine today - sorry for the delay but I was just waiting for a time I could be patient !
I ordered it from HTCDirect as they are the only ones that had in stock
Recieved it promptly the next day so Kudos to them on that...also the guy I kept in touch with over email (Carlos if I remember correctly) was great and prompt in my queries.
My main query was - does it have the SAME fitment as the original bundled one.
As you know, the bundled one covers the entire screen including the slider for zoom and camera
The answer was Yes, it was exactly the same fitment.
So when I opened the pack, I was a bit annoyed as it was clearly NOT the same fitment! It's close however, but the top of the camera where on the HTC is all the way round with a small hole for the camera, the Brando one is in a U shape leaving the top bit of the camera open.
OK onto application
Just like all Brando protectors, it is protected by two covers on either end with clear instructions - pull one side BEFORE application and the other AFTER application
Once the dust was off the screen and the original protector...
I did just this - and after several attempts of lining it up - and I note, it is very EXACT in lining up. Slightly out and you will have more black on one side from the screen than the other.
Peeled it off, applied it and smoothed it out - the latter bit was hardly needed as the bubbles just vanished which was great.
At this state, the protector looked smoked a little and not as clear as the original one.
Once I was happy, I peeled the top part - noticed one bubble near the end where the label to peel was, smoothed it out and the protector was as clear as the original one.
First impressions:
It does feel MUCH more durable
It has a very slight and I mean SLIGHT smoked affect in that it is not 100% transparent as the original one but this shows how good it is potentially in strength.
Usage is fine, I can glide over it with my finger and stylus without any issues. The original was a finger print magnet but this seems to not stain with it which is great.
Now the downside....
I think HTCDirect sent me a slightly duff one. It has clearly got markings on the top (once the top layer was off) which look like impact marks.
It is very tiny - almost like what happens to a screen without a protector after 12months
I'm not too fussed but feel a bit cheated. Its no use removing it now as I would have no protector on it during the replacement stages - not to metion I would have to pay to ship back etc.
For now, I am ok with it but if it bugs me, I will throw it away and put the original one on (I ordered 2 extras from Clove who as usual, got it to me instantly, good communications and speed in delivery).
The clove one has no marks at all so thats an option.
Hope this answers some of your questions but to summarise your question

If you can get one mark free - yes it is
Benefits?
It's re-usable, stronger, washable, and I notice it does not let as much light reflect of it - something I had huge problems with in the sunlight with the original one where I could not see the screen - I am not exaggerating!
Downsides?
Where I got mine from, it has marks on it - something that might just force me to remove it and go back to the original one
Also the camera does not go in a O shape but rather a U shape
OK during the submit button, I realsed the marks and the U shape was bugging me too much
I knew it was a matter of time that gap in the U would get clogged up with dust that would eventually get stuck around the U bit
Removed it and applied the original one I bought from Clove... I have two so if it does wear down, I can replace it
I know from experiance that the original one in the box that I applied lasted fine up till now (a month now since I've had my TD2) so I dont doubt that it will be worn out - May not last as long as Brando's guarantee of it outlasting te device but that's fine given the price of the HTC ones.
Applied it without any dust getting trapped (the main reason I had to buy these and the brando one)
I found those marks were actually dust that was already stuck under the protective layer - whether this is HTCDirects fault or Brando during factory release - who knows but I think as a lesson, I'm staying away from both and sticking to the original stuff.
Hope you make the right decision either way - for now, a brando goes into the bin

damnit, didn't pay enough attention to dust & co...so after i saw that i catched a few dust pieces under it, i've tried to get them out manually - big mistake.
so trashed the original one and waiting for the new brando to put it on. being a former iphone-user, i must admit that the diamond2 screen is pretty sensible to scratches. i thought that i won't be needing any protection, but i already have a few small ones...so a screen protection is a must-have now.

You'll be fine using it while its there - just be annoying to see the dust specs!
I ordered a pair of the original ones in the end as I was not happy at all with the premium Brando one - the look, feel and visibility was terrible
Reason I ordered 2 of the original ones is I was hearing rumours before the unit was even released that the original HTC one was not durable and would need to be replaced after x amount of months - having had mine for 4-5 months now and with heavy usage, I can report back to say the first protector of the two is still on there - still very clean with no stylus/finger/nail marks and still as durable as it was when I put it first on.

From what other threads are saying the screen should be treated with care. Don't push it hard and avoid impacts. Don't stick the phone in your back pocket! Some people have experienced damaged screens even after a short time.
Shouldnt put any phone in your back pocket!
The number of phones I have to fix or write off because they have had severe pressure on them - ie: sitting on them has increased 5 fold recently.
And lets face it...the countries population are not getting any thinner/smaller!

I know it is not recommended. but I use a small drop of water on the screen before applying the screen, wiping the water as it is squeeze out. The water takes the dust with it.

I've applied mine that came with the Diamond 2 and after a few attempts you can't see it is there. Ironically I fits so well I almost want to put another screen protector on top of it so it doesn't become damaged and need replacing.
Anyway a tip. Working in a dust free environment is the key. A bathroom is a good place. I have a hepa air filter (for hayfever) and this removes dust really well so run that for a bit which helps.
With all the care in the world dust can get underneath, I had a few specs, and they tend to cause a small bubble as the screen screen protector can't fit flush. I found it very easy to remove them. Have some sticky tape handy, this can be used to lift up the screen protector from the corner. Lift it back up enough to get to the spec of dust, and using another piece of sticky tape dab the spec of dust off the sticky side of the protector, then lay it back down.

I know what you mean I made an okay job of the one that came with it. The rubber case I bought of eBay came with one as well and made a right pigs ear of that. I think they need to be applied in a clean room
I've since bought some more off eBay so next time, I'm going to be a lot more careful!

I got 3 screen protectors with the original phone (2 of them as a gift). The first one was perfect except for a piece of fluff near the middle of the screen. I tried to remove it with a cloth(!!!) and ruined it. So I went for the second one, but at this stage the screen was not clean so I tried to use a microfibre cloth, which made it worse because it leaves even more fluff. I tried to fix it a few times and so now I have fluff inside, plus a bubble (the protector is a bit scratched) plus it doesn't stick properly on most of the sides and around the holes.
I am tempted to use the last one, but if I ruin it once more I am out of them. My biggest problem is how to clean the screen before sticking the protector. Will all the fluff come away when I remove the old protector? How can I clean the screen, knowing that the microfibre leaves fluff? Shall I blow with a can of compressed air?
I find magic tape is great for removing dust spots. Use the backing sheet to gently lift a corner then push the tape underneath to clean screen or protector as needed.
My favourite screen protectors are from Martin Fields. Really tough and easy to apply. Also, they are washable so if you do get a real dust problem you just take it off an run under the tap. Don't try that with the phone though...

No that's not scratches but a mark made by fat left by the fingers. He cleans the screen after and no more mark...

Personally i'm seeing a smudge over where he was scratching, without cleaning the screen no conclusive information can be taken from this.
Well, he says there are no scratches left, for what it's worth. I would trust his opinion in this case rather than impressions from the video.
well even if their was scratches on teh scree from SISSORS it is still impressive. i mena come on, the guy was trying to scratch the screen and it diddnt.
what it doesnt show on the video is the amount of pressure he applied though.
I'm sure you can scratch it, picking the right tools and the right pressure. But I think it's rather safe to assume that it's scratch resistant enough to keep the phone in your pocket without any shields.

agreed, i think the point behind the entire "scratch proof" is to prove that placing it in your pocket without a screen protector will not have it coming out looking like a touch HD 1 This is great news in my humble opinion!!
not sure what is so bad of putting a screen protector, really? I won't take a risk at all to have a permanent scratch on my device!
Well, because I hate doing things like applying those damned protectors; because those protectors get scratched fairly easily and your device starts looking like crap; because I can never apply them accurately enough so that they don't have bubbles underneath.
I hate them with a passion, really. I even wanted to by an iPhone because of this. When I first heard about capacitive screen on the Leo I didn't give a damn about multi-touch (and I still don't care much about it). My hope was that HTC would use a glass screen surface. Now I'm happy. The screen is scratch resistant; if I still manage to put a scratch on it, I'll have it replaced - it's not that expensive.

agree 100% with u, man i loved those iPhone screens, i could care less about the multi touch, i mean great, but if my HD 1 would have that screen, i'd be more than happy using it for a good more couple of months!

Ah c'mon! Some of you guys arguing about whether it scratched with scissors, ffs a car windscreen will scratch with scissors!! It very scratch resistant, i'm very impressed. Christ I wouldn't be surprised if some of you started complaining it's not dishwasher proof, jeez...

it seems like not a reliable test to me, the reviewers seems using light pressure doing the test. And I really don't believe that any phone in the market can be really scratch resistant. Why taking the risk. In real world usages, there are many things can scratch glass surface very easily, and why leave some permanent scratches to the expensive device? What is so wrong with a screen protector?
Anyone else have the problem of intended "taps" turning into short "swipes" because of how slick the screen is? With apps it's annoying, for example on my homescreen sometimes trying to launch something from an icon just slides to the next screen. This never happened on my last Android phone with a less slippery screen.
Now I am playing the game "cut the rope" and the inability to make multiple taps in rapid succession (because some/all register as slides) is killing me with the blue air push thingies.
Maybe a screen protector would help. I tried one on my old phone once and took it off because it made the screen too sticky... i.e. not slippery... which is what I want here. :-/
Haven't had any issues with the screen. I would say its on par or better than most devices I've used. Depending on how long you've had it you may just have to get used to the sensitivity.

My suggestion is go to best buy and get a zagg screen protector and pay them to install it. Go there in the evening and after they install it, don't use the phone. Take it home and let it charge overnight. In the morning, the screen should be sufficiently dry enough to use like normal. It is important to let it dry properly without it being disturbed. Yes this may be ocd but I've made the mistake of having one installed and ignoring their advice and using the phone like normal. Whenever the phone would heat up, like from being in a pocket, the protector would slide on the screen. I remember how slick the screen was. Getting a zagg put on it will take care of that issue and be better for protecting the screen from scuffs and scratches.
