Hello everybody, is there any software who lock the Edge connection? I mean: ok for 3G or HSDPA connections, but when connection swith to EDGE, I'd like it to fall. I guess you can understand what's my problem: I have a H3G Italian flat data account, but it's free (100MB/day) only under 3G or HSDPA connection. Sometimes, while travelling, the connection automatically switch to EDGE... and I START PAYING!!! Problem is that if I'm not looking at the phone, I can't see it and I loose money for nothing... It would be better to deny EDGE connection AT ALL!!! Any Idea?
I already have GData software, very good to enable or disable the complete connection setting... anything better?

tried NoData by modaco?
maybe not yet... where can I find it?
Well, it's very easy (in my case). Go to
Start -> Settings -> Telephone (or Phone maybe) -> Band
and select
WCDMA
well, I don't know if these are the right steps for you, because I've a german ROM.

sorry, ignore

Hi,
I've found that the switch between GPRS and UTMS can be a bit of a PITA. It causes TomTom to drop it's traffic connection, and makes web browsing in a marginal 3G area practically unusable as it's chops and changes between GPRS and UTMS (3G).
I've tried to create a new "Cellular Line" connection with the *99# dialup settings, in a hope that this would connect me to GPRS without switching to UTMS if available, but I can't get it to work - it just says "No modem at above number".
Has anybody got a solution to this?
Cheers,
Steve.
If you select Settings -> Phone -> Band and choose GSM (instead of Auto), what happens? Does it stick to GSM? I think it should do.
EDIT: Jus ttried it on mine. Had full UMTS signal and forced GSM and it worked!
I'm not in a position to test that at the moment (no 3G signal), however, doesn't that prevent all 3G facilities of the phone (i.e. video calls) from working?
Having said that, I can't think why I would want a video call, and I can always switch it back should I need to.
Cheers,
Steve.
Yes it does prevent all 3G features (and therefore extends battery life). Sorry, I didn't realise that this was not what you wanted to do. From your original post I thought you didn't want it to use UMTS at all.
Ideally, it was just the web browsing/internet access that I wanted to prevent switching to UTMS, but to be honest, I'm not sure I would miss video phoning - is there anything else I'm getting on 3G that I'll not get after making that change?
Cheers,
Steve.
As far as I'm aware, making voice calls on 3G is a little bit clearer than on GSM, but consumes more battery. So if you are unable to tell the difference between the two then you could fix it to GSM and save battery life.
However, don't forget that UMTS is vaunted as being 3 times faster than GPRS for internet use, so your browsing etc will slow down if you lock it into GSM/GPRS only mode. I bet this doesn't matter much for TomTom traffic though as I am sure it only uses small amounts of data. If you're happy with GPRS then go for it.
Yes, I'm aware of the speed difference between GPRS and UTMS. My main problem is that I use my Exec to update the football scores on my football club's website, but the home ground is in a marginal UTMS area, so it keeps switching on/off, and consequently takes much longer to update the score than if it just connected via GPRS.
I'll give these new settings a go, and if there are any unwanted side effects, I'll switch back.
Cheers,
Steve.
Having being in the know about 3G for some time now I'm saying that its virtually impossible to only use GSM for internet, but stay with 3G for vid calling.
Your best bet would be some 3rd party software for this as I don't think any 3G phone lets you do this.
Yes I agree Biohead. I don't even think third party software would help as the radio has to disconnect and then reconnect. So you can't do some stuff on GSM (like GPRS) and then some on UMTS (like Video calling) without disconnecting and reconnecting. Luckily for Mr Pritchard, he is not too bothered about video calling and so, hopefully, this will solve his problem.
Hi,
I have bought an uses hw6915 device, which works fine, except for EDGE. I´m connecting to web.vodafone.de (Germany) without any problems while in GPRS. As soon as I´m approaching an EDGE network and the [E] appears, the data transfer is stopped, server can´t be reached but the device is logged into the EDGE network.
Phone works in EDGE network as long as I´m not connected to APN.
Does anyone has a clue? Could the device defective or is it a strange configuration problem?
Is there a way to swith off EDGE in registry?

Perhaps the carrier that runs that EDGE enabled tower doesn't have a data roaming agreement with Vodafone. That would cause you to become disconnected once you hit that EDGE tower.
Just an idea, as I'm not sure how data roaming agreements work in Europe.
EDGE is just an extension to GPRS. and only between both supporting radio's (both network and client device). If you dont see the E for EDGE coverage, chances are you just aint in range of an EDGE enabled transmitter. Most countries that have 3G wont bother using EDGE, orange in the UK say that EDGE is only really used as a fall back when you are out of 3G range.
I dont know of any way to force EDGE use, and if there is Id like to hear it! GPRS sucks!
It was a technical error. HP replaced the mainboard, now it works great...
is there a program to do that for windows mobile? so that the connection wont fall back to gprs or edge and always use 3G or hsdpa?
in sierra wireless aircard there is an option to set that.
i think there's an option in setting, personal, phone
go to band tab and change network type to WCDMA and change band to UMTS
it works but now phone call also using the 3G network always. how to set only if making data call?

If you want to do this band change easyly, can use the tools on
this post, if you want the phone change band smartly, better you flash a good WM6.5 ROM.
Check more info on this thread.
i have a similar question but it is related to forcing the phone to switch from 3G to HSDPA mode when active data transfer occurs..
thanks..
hello,
after searching on "3G" in the forum, i seems that the problems are just the opposite to my question, they all want 3G to be turned off.
Now I want to connect to 3G (with the "G" icon on the staus bar).
My problem is that it always connect on "edge", with the "E" icon in status bar and when I want to make a video call, it always says that there is no connection to 3G so I can't make videocall.
Anyone knwos how to activate 3G?
I looked into the connections, but I don't want to mess in it without knowing what I do.
BTW I'm in Europe (Belgium).
Thanks
You fell into the same trap I did when I first got a Windows Mobile phone.
G means GPRS and is the lowest, simplest connection speed.
G = GPRS. "Normal" internet speed (9.6-14.4kbps)
E - Edge. "Enhanced" internet speed (normally 48kbps, but can be higher)
3G = 3G internet speed (128-384kbps). Also allows video calls.
H = HSDPA. "Mobile broadband" speed. (1.8Mbps, 3.6Mbps or 7.2Mbps depending on operator).
You'll want to go to:
Start > Settings > Connections > Advanced Network
Make sure that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled
From then on, it depends on the signal in your area. If you find that you're having a problem getting and maintaining a 3G or H signal, you might need to get an updated SIM from your operator. I got a new SIM from O2-UK and it solved my connection problems immediately.
I see that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled.
Could it have something to do with the settings in connections (instead of advanced network settings)?
I will also check with my provider (sim card)
Thanks for the reply
i cannot connect to the internet not using wifi. i do however h an H symbol next to my signal. i dont get why i have the hsdpa but cannot connect. i've tried anything i can think of.
*i can't turn data connection on in my comm manager, it automatically disconnects and says wap.cingular not working or gprs not working somthing like that.
*in the connection settings i pick media net wich is automatically picks att but still won't
*in settings/personal/phone i left if auto defualts for bands
*settings/connections/advance network i even tried to put it to hsda ONLY won't work
the only new lead im getting is this Zenith post saying he got new sim card so now it's working. that's all im getting at now. but im even skeptical about that
If you are not getting the 3G or H icon then you either have no coverage or an incompatible SIM.
If you can't connect to the internet you either have incorrect settings on your phone, or your network aren't allowing you on their APN.
Suggest in all cases phoning your network to get clarification.

you wouldn't believe how i found out i had no internet. they say'd it was in the system but it was disabled in thier system. i put in my brothers sims and his work just fine. so i told them to look at whatever his plan is and they switch to what he had. anyways long story short i found out not my settings bc you just auto configure it connectin wizards, and wasn't sims card, it was stupid att. i was getting the H icon but not an H on my signal. anyways its all done now. thanks again guys
I got a new HTC touch 3g from Asia and have frustrating problem. On ATT network in US, when the call network switches between 3G and Edge the phone network becomes zero ( no bars) and the calls drop.
This is extremely annoying as the ATT network continuously changes from 3g and edge when driving/walking. Is there anyway to switch off 3g/edge because I don't have a data plan and I don't use the phone for internet.
Or is there a way to force it to be only edge?
Any help would be great!
do a search for nodata.cab, it's originally form the Modaco forum but i've seen it over here too, works great!
Thanks! Downloaded and changed the settings in nodata.
Any ideas how I can test that this works? I still see "E" next to the phone bars.
Thanks a lot.
I think this is no solution: NoData only stops data-connections and does not affect the connection-band that is used for communication with the base-stations of the network (for speaking and data). Your problem are the calls not the data connection that you do not use, IMO.
Try this: "Start/Settings/Telephone/Band" (translated from German). There you can preselect the Band(s) that is (are) used for communication globally.
Thanks. I don't have anything called "Band".
I tried using Bandswitch...has anyone tried it?

This sounds good, I do not know the exact English nomenclature because I have a German version. What type of network is displayed next to phone bars now?

You're right! i was mislead by the question (how to turn of 3G or Edge).
