Conecting to 3G - XPERIA X1 General

hello,
after searching on "3G" in the forum, i seems that the problems are just the opposite to my question, they all want 3G to be turned off.
Now I want to connect to 3G (with the "G" icon on the staus bar).
My problem is that it always connect on "edge", with the "E" icon in status bar and when I want to make a video call, it always says that there is no connection to 3G so I can't make videocall.
Anyone knwos how to activate 3G?
I looked into the connections, but I don't want to mess in it without knowing what I do.
BTW I'm in Europe (Belgium).
Thanks

You fell into the same trap I did when I first got a Windows Mobile phone.
G means GPRS and is the lowest, simplest connection speed.
G = GPRS. "Normal" internet speed (9.6-14.4kbps)
E - Edge. "Enhanced" internet speed (normally 48kbps, but can be higher)
3G = 3G internet speed (128-384kbps). Also allows video calls.
H = HSDPA. "Mobile broadband" speed. (1.8Mbps, 3.6Mbps or 7.2Mbps depending on operator).
You'll want to go to:
Start > Settings > Connections > Advanced Network
Make sure that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled
From then on, it depends on the signal in your area. If you find that you're having a problem getting and maintaining a 3G or H signal, you might need to get an updated SIM from your operator. I got a new SIM from O2-UK and it solved my connection problems immediately.

I see that HSDPA/HSUPA is enabled.
Could it have something to do with the settings in connections (instead of advanced network settings)?
I will also check with my provider (sim card)
Thanks for the reply

i cannot connect to the internet not using wifi. i do however h an H symbol next to my signal. i dont get why i have the hsdpa but cannot connect. i've tried anything i can think of.
*i can't turn data connection on in my comm manager, it automatically disconnects and says wap.cingular not working or gprs not working somthing like that.
*in the connection settings i pick media net wich is automatically picks att but still won't
*in settings/personal/phone i left if auto defualts for bands
*settings/connections/advance network i even tried to put it to hsda ONLY won't work
the only new lead im getting is this Zenith post saying he got new sim card so now it's working. that's all im getting at now. but im even skeptical about that

If you are not getting the 3G or H icon then you either have no coverage or an incompatible SIM.
If you can't connect to the internet you either have incorrect settings on your phone, or your network aren't allowing you on their APN.
Suggest in all cases phoning your network to get clarification.

Faulty MDA Pro on T-Mobile ???

I think i have a faulty unit because i can not connect to the internet at all (although it worked last sat morning when i got the unit but i did not try again until my number got ported)i have tried it on GSM only and checked all the settings over with the guy from T-Mobile and they are ok but if i put my sim in my Jam i get a connection with no problems.
The guy from T-Mobile says it may be beacuse i am on the fringe for UMTS reception but i get the U symbol and 4 bars on the strength meter but surely it should go on to GPRS if it can not get reception on UMTS as it would do for phone calls anyone any ideas ?
Start>Settings>Personal Tab>Phone>Band>"Select Network Type" and change to GSM (it's probably on Auto), then ok it all.
If you now connect over GPRS (which is what the above is to do - force it not to use UMTS at all), then you're ok.
Next thing is to go to a UMTS strong area, and do the settings but set back to Auto and see if u get 3G connection.
Hope it helps.
i just get the message ''warning:unable to change GSM/UMTS Band, please try again later''
thanks anyway

Turning of Roaming completely

Not sure if this is the correct forum but I want to be able to turn of roaming completely. I have a US G1 on the three UK network with the US RC33 installed and root. I have disabled data roaming. Here in the UK we're too small a country to want to roam! Coverage is usually good enough from a single network. However, I occasionally get the little 'R' symbol on the single strength icon and an annoying prompt saying I need to turn data roaming on because I lost connectivity. I have to go into the settings and manually select the "3" network again.
What I want is to either be connected to three UK or not connected to anything at all. Is there a config file I can edit to allow this? Would the UK RC8 firmware do this for me?
Thanks in advance for any help.
Doesn't a 3-UK SIM try to roam onto O2 though?
You could set the phone WCDMA only and NOT roam onto a GSM network.
Use AnyCut to shorcut Activity: Phone Info
From there under preferred Network Type; set to "WCDMA Only"
HELP!! Roaming signal won't go away
I have an unlocked G1, JF1.41 v 1.1 and i just updated to the RC33...but this also happened when i had RC30 , v 1.0...
I put in my canadian Fido sim card and everything works fine but i have that little "R" on top of my signal strength bar...
I think this means its data roaming? if this is the case...it should be okay (even though its going to bother me) because my service provider says my EDGE/Data is disabled (i do not have a data plan, NOR do i wish to incur any data charges.. i'm fine with my free WIFI ) .
However, if this means im roaming on another network, i dont want to be incuring any long distance charges on my phone EVEN when im using my own FIDO network..
I went to settings - about phone - status, and here are my specs (some of them):
Network: Fido
Network Type: EDGE
Service state: In service
Roaming: Roaming
Data Access: Disconnected
i'm pretty much just concerned about the ROAMING part of it... my other friends with G1's are with rogers, don't have that little R..
how do i get rid of that?? please and thanks!
Try manually changing the network in Settings>Wireless controls>Mobile networks>Operator selection
G1, like all GSM phones, will roam onto networks specified on the SIM if it can get a better signal. As long as the relevant operator has a roaming agreement in place, there's nothing to be concerned about, other than the R symbol in the status bar.
Mod: move this over to General discussion please.
I did change it and selected my Fido network (it's the only network available).
Thanks. I've set it to WCDMA only so I'll see how it goes.
Please help??? i still have that little R on top!
After I got home I found my phone had lost its connection. It didn't seem to be searching for the network. I had to go into settings, search for networks and then select three again. Is there any way to control if the phone does a search for networks automatically?
Looks like it reconnects to three on its own after a while. I still get the annoying popup about turning on data roaming though

As has been previously mentioned, Three will "roam" onto another network if it goes out of Three's own 3G network coverage because Three does not run its own 2G network.
However, it isn't O2 anymore, it is Orange as of late 2006/2007. I *believe* that you won't be charged any more if you use data whilst "roaming" on Orange, so whilst you are in the UK it is quite safe to allow data roaming, but I would be inclined to check this with Three.

Uk Vodafone customer can surf in Hsdpa but can't connect to G

Hi All,
As UK Vodafone CS were no help what so ever...I thought I would ask the experts.
I recently updated my phone via Sony Update software to
R3AA013
At home all seemed fine I created a new wap and connection and setup email etc and on the 'H' network all was fine.
Unfortunately at work I have a weak signal and only ever get G. Problem is now the phone seems to be unable to connect to this, just seems to cycle through attempts then gives up.
Is it best to reapply the firmware update and start again or are there any settings I can check first?
As I say in the HSDPA signal is seems to work fine...
Thanks in advance!
Paul.
Personally i have only got a 3G signal in Crystal Palace but no where else - i sometimes see H but that is always a very low signal and sometimes G with a high signal - dont know which is better - and yea im not to sure about G working either - G isnt 3G though 3G=3G but yea it would seem vodafone suck and their CS is more than awful and rubbish

I very rarely see the 3G symbol too. I normally get H and G. I just walked out the office and the G went to H and I could get pages again. Does anyone know what is going on?
try next time u r at work going into "settings", "connections", "advanced", "select network" - and switch settings there from My ISP to WEB - then try connecting again.
I had the same problem for a while and this helped. However, occasionally I have to switch around when I m in an "H" signal area. Dont know why that is but I guess its not the only weird thing about this phone
Hi Amanox,
Thanks...I tried that work around, it shows the solid G and two dialled connections but when you try and access a page on IE or Opera... both say they can't locate remote server.
It's really frustrating.
Regards,
Paul.
When is shows GPRS (G), it may be that the Vodafone cell-sites (transmitter pylons) transmitter cards do not have the capacity to allow data over that frequency, whereas the 3G/3.5G (HSDPA) transmitter cards have ample bandwidth?
Just a sort of educated guess. Either that or something is screwed up in your account settings at Voda's end not allowing it.
I don't have this problem at all ...I get 3G or HSDPA most of the time in London -GPRS is the fall-back I think, when neither of the faster options is available.
What puzzled me, and I thought it might just have something to do with your issue, is that you mention manually setting up networks:-
"created a new wap and connection and setup email etc"
I do of course have tp set up Email, but have never had to set up wap or anything else ...when I've hard reset (upgrading ROMs etc -am now on R3A too) I have only ever had to enter my SIM / PIN code and that's it -I'm connected to 3G (or H or G depending on what's available)
Nothing set manually at all -other than email account (and WIFI/bluetooth connections)
My guess is that you have chosen the wrong APN. As I'm from Germany I do not know the correct setup for Internet access in the UK, but Vodafone Germany differs between WAP and WEB access as well. WAP access is really limited to a special bunch of sites, so maybe your problems are related to an incorrect setup of the APN.
Jcsxda, sorry to puzzle you. I created a Manual internet profile and a Wap connection profile as I can't edit the My Isp one the phone came configured with. I thought by creating it manually it might fix the problem. I used a Vodafone configuration guide for the SONY X1 so I must have the right APN's etc.
Foo you mentioned the APN might be wrong if that was true I would assume I would not see any connections. When I tap on connectivity info box I see a Voda INT (GPRS, 3G) and a contract WAP (GPRS, 3G) both with a timer counting up. I have set that programs that use the internet use the standard My ISP, then for programs that use a private network I have told it to use the manual connection which I setup using the UK Vodafone configuration guide.
Oh and I re-installed the firmware last night, but still have the same problem.
G, 3G and HSPDA are pretty much the same thing in terms of connecting. It's just the speeds they run at.
GPRS is around 56 kbit/s
3G (UMTS) is around 384 kbit/s
HSPDA on Vodafone UK is up to 7.2 mbit/s (although a lot of cells are at 3.6 and some are at 1.8)
Vodafone Greece have just released HSPA+ with speeds of 21.6 mbit/s.
In the UK most 3G cells have been upgraded to support HSPDA, so if your phone supports HSPDA (the X1) then you will find it rare to come across the 3G symbol.
I switch between using both the WAP and the INTERNET apns (images better on WAP, however more apps run on INTERNET), and switch between G and H through the house and never have a problem.
I would suggest making sure that the settings are 100% correct.
The INTERNET apn is the easiest as it doesn't need any proxy settings.
The apn is internet and the username and password are both web

Hi Artesea,
Please correct me if I am wrong but if I had the APN's details wrong wouldn't I be unable to surf in H areas? Which I can. It's only when just the G is displayed I can't get any access. The manual connection I created I have not added anything other than.
internet
web
web
wap.vodafone.co.uk
wap
wap
The crazy thing is it was all happy before I installed the firmware update..although the connection has always been weak I did get a connection at work.
Maybe I should just be happy I can still get phone calls and spend less time looking at my email...
The wap apn sometimes need (and therefore it is advisable to have) some extra proxy details.
You should have ticked "This network connects to the Internet" and "This network uses a proxy server to connect to the Internet" with "212.183.137.12" as the Proxy server.

3G on and Off

So, i have bugged folks on this forum about getting 3G to work on other carriers, and it turns out - it does work! At first i found out my settings were set to GSM only, but now i also found this weird inconsistency possibly a bug.
If i have Data Off after using 3G or GPRS for some time, when i turn it back on, phone would not connect to data service. After enabling it will simply time out.
I found that if i switch from GSM to WCDMA, and than back, 3G network would connect and work.
I don't know if it's specifically my phone, or a bug, so i'm just throwing it out there.

What carrier are you getting 3G to work? I doubt its working if its anything that doesn't run on tmobiles bands..the icon will come up and stuff but your either getting edge speeds or not getting any connection. I've had this phone show me 3G with full bars and just time out.. I can eveven put in a sim with a sidekick plan or other data plan and it shows 3G but it does not work
Well, i'm overseas and i have used it on Russian carrier Beeline and carriers in two other countries. Now, i do set my connection to WCDMA only, which gives me 3G icon. When i set it to GSM only, i see GPRS icon show up.
So, it does work, i use fring, online radio, google maps. But as far as speed concerned, i have not tested it.
Just ran a speed test using Speedtest.net tool, I get 3951kbps download, and 655 upload
thats 3G

[Q] 3g issues

Im having trouble connecting to 3g.
My Xplay connects to H network fine, but when that drops out it only connects to 2g.
When i manually try to select 3g im given a pop up 'your sim card doesn't allow a connection to that network'.
Ive phoned my provider & they say it's not sim related & there's no problem with the network.
Any suggestions?

Same issue here. But mine does go into 3G mode. But when i try to register for 3G it gives that error.
Most likely a frequency incompatibility. Not sure what H is, but check the gsm frequencies from the SE website and compare it with the 3G/HSPA frequencies your carrier runs on.
its a frequency issue, the only fully working networks are in the uk
I am in the in the UK !
same here, i did yesterday see my signal go from H to 3g but only for a few seconds. I am connected to vodafone uk and live in the city center where 3g always is available, how come mines mainly displaying H am I missing some settings ? does anyone elses xperia play show 3g in the taskbar ?.... tanks in advance
H is faster think of it as 3.5g
