i posted this in several forums.. still no solution
Hey all,
Maybe it's just me finding this annoying, maybe it's not and it's somewhere in the thousands of posts (which i tried to search) and did not find.
But why in the world does the SMS threading group all the messages from Me at the bottom and all the ones from the other party at the top? shouldn't it organize and THREAD it based on the last received/sent?
BUT!
this could be because all the messages from ME have the correct timestamp but the incoming messages have incorrect time stamps (about 5hrs behind).
Is there a way to change the time stamp on the incoming message?
Its; very weird!! cause on the VIEW ALL THREADS screen the last message would say i received it at 5:42pm but when check the message details it says 12:42.
anyone else have this problem? or a fix to this problem?
see the photoshop mock up that i did below..

See how in the threaded area JANE DOE's time stamp is 11:15am and 11:20am? but it should really be 4:15pm and 4:20pm.. but the timestamp for ME is correct at 4:18pm and 4:19pm.
But when you look at the messaging main Page it says the last message was at 4:20pm.. it doesn;t correspond with the threaded timestamp..
hopefully i am explaining this correctly.. i am assuming that all my incoming messages are at the top of the thread because of the 5 hour timestamp difference
is the other party in a different country? maybe it's an OS thing to add/subtract timezones, something android has missed?
no the other party is not in another country..
I have an unlocked G1 .. i got the unlock code from Tmobile. I am on the rogers network in Canada.. ; <
i really hope it has nothing to do with what carrier your on.. i know the iphone 1st gen had the timestamp problem but it was across the board.. but at least the threading still alternated from Sent/Received..
the G1 seems to organize its messages via Time.. but the weird thing is on the main Message Screen the timestamp is correct.. just not in the threaded part..
this is very frustrating.. and annoying that i have to scoll up to see the last message that was sent to me
I heard the fix is you have to set your phone to GMT time and then do an offset I think it was... I heard someone in europe either here or on the tmobile forums had the same issue and that is what they had to do.
Now that I think about it check your time settings... make sure it is not set on automatic... that is probably why, if your timezone is GMT and has the correct time for your timezone then you need to change your timezone and set the correct time.
^^ yes this is correct.. someone helped me in the android community forums. this is what he said
I had the same issue. (I'm with fido in canada).
go into Time & Settings and set it to manual. Put your timezone to 0 and it will work.
The reason for this is that T-mobile relies on the phone to set the timestamp correctly on txt messages.
Fido/Rogers on the other hand get adjusted automatically at the tower before the message arrives thus the phone adjusts it a second time... hence why the timestamp is way off.

SMS time
does anybody know how to fix the sms timestamp issue with the G1 on fido or rogers in canada.
sms time fix
I've tried these steps and my time still comes up wrong generall out by three hrs, any ideas i'm also on fido in canada.
This fix works for my wife's G1. I will have a poke around and find out what I can as to why it seems only Rogers causes this timestamp error, happened on my touch pro as well.
If I find anything, Ill let you folks know
Hi everyone,
I posted that fix over at the Android community. Although it will fix your SMS issue, it will mess up your calendars time... so it's not really a fix if you rely on both.
The following is my Theory in a nutshell of what is going on:
T-Mobile sends all text messages in GMT format and the phone automatically translates the time depending on the timezone you have set.
Rogers and Fido on the other hand adjust the time of the sms at the Cell tower you are currently on, therefore it arrives on the phone correctly; but then the phone will adjust the time because it's configured to do just that.
I have PM'ed JesusFreak to maybe find a way to fix it in his custom Firmwares but he has not responded to it yet. Maybe someone else in thie community can push him to this thread or to read my message.
Someone in this thread:
http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=1305
Posted a solution that doesn't involve changing your time to +0 (which would mess up your calendar and gmail time stamps). The solution is to use an SMS app called handcent. I haven't tried it myself but it may be worth a shot for others.
it does mess up your calendars time and definitely did on mine, so what i did was match the timezone on my calendar with the one on my phone. but then it obviously they my schedule out by 4 hours, (gmt -6 to gmt -2) i know its a stupid work around, but it seemed to work.
I don't think that this issue has anything to do with the OS .. ..
I was using Nokia N97 mini earlier on FIDO as my service provider. I noticed this problem but then it never bothered me because nokia never arranged the text messages in "thread" form.
I got my HTC Desire today and this thing started annoying me.
If it has anything to do with OS then this issued could not have been on Symbian S60 v 5 (Nokia N97 mini) and on Andriod both :s .. there could be some other reason.
okay, I found a solution and that is "SMS Fix Time" App on Google App Market. it fixed the issue for me.
My incoming fido messages were 4 hours behind the current time, so i +4 as the offset. Now i am having proper threaded view.
That's not a solution; it's just a workaround. I'm with Rogers and using an unlocked Bell I9000M right now and having the same issue. I am running the app at the moment but it occasioanlly fails to adjust the time correctly.

Is your cell phone was originally EU specific? I guess if we install a US specific ROM then the issue would be resolved. Since there are couple of friends who are using unlocked HTC desire. That phone was originally on TELUS but they are using on fido and they don't have this problem.

I'm with FIDO ... got a desire from telus and I do have this problem. Timestamp works fine...but screw up sometime.
You can use Handcent sms to fix the problem, but it's a shame for rogers/fido....
Is someone has a permanent solution...plz inform us.

I have tilt 2 with nrg ROM and the larger mms size cab,

That is due to ATT network only being able to handle 600k max. Anything over that will get that error.

I have the Tilt 2 on ATT. I have the same problem as the picture posted above. On my original Tilt a MMS picture would take up the entire screen. On this new Tilt it is so small I can barely see it. Would love a way to make the picture maximize on the screen. It seems wasteful to have such a large screen now but can't see what was sent to me. Also, I am currently running the stock ATT rom but thinking about changing.

Try this .cab http://thewingster.com/Documents/MMS Size Increase.cab
As far as I know it should work on all ROMs. I have a T-Mo US TP2 and it worked on mine with a couple different ROMs that I have tried.

that's to increase the limit of 300 to 1000. which i always install after flashing a new rom and that doesn't make the picture any bigger.

So I thought I'd start collecting what sucks about the mandatory rom.
Please, restrict your posts to just the problems you're having with the rom, no ranting, *****ing or whining
If you need space to host your videos/pictures, let me know and I'll host them for you.
My problems with the rom:
Ancient 1.5 build (let's face it, we're not getting a newer one)
Home app is not responsive after being idle for a while (I've missed calls waiting for the phone to respond to my key presses)
Home app often hangs for a few seconds
The 'drawer' often doesn't come up for the first few times that you drag your finger over it
Screen corruption when you open the keyboard (see picture below)
Many problems sending text messages
The screen takes quite a while before rotating when you rotate the device or open the keyboard (see other pic below)
The number buttons stick when you're using the on-screen keypad (i.e. enter your voicemail password)
Sometimes multiple key presses are recorded when you use the on-screen keypad (i.e. instead of dialing 2, you get 22 or 222)
Some times when you flip between the home screens, the animation stops halfway (i.e. half of each screen) and resumes after a few seconds
Significantly reduced battery life
a lot of market apps refuse to install (old SDK)

It's not to complain about the phone, but to collect the bugs/issues in the latest build that was forced onto HTC Dream users on the Rogers network (hence the no complaining clause).

Another crazy problem they introduced: if you use a screen lock pattern and you SLIDE THE SCREEN OPEN, then it bypasses the unlock screen.
I'm starting to wonder about this build. The 911 patch was trivial, so what is the deal with all the extra changes (that make the thing less than usable)? Robbers does NOT create the builds... they are all in the hands of HTC, and we know that HTC is better at it than this.
I'm starting to wonder if somebody at HTC decided to stick up for people saddled with robbers.... by making a build SO TERRIBLE that robbers will be forced to order another software update.... hopefully to the latest.
called rogers and tried to get them to remove the flag they wont. i was able for him to escalate the problem, i gave many reasons why i wouldnt update from this thread. he said they have fixed the sms problems but nothing else.
just heads up for those who got stuck with the update and are having problems call in.

I'm getting data, voice and sms drops after 3-6 hours of phone uptime. Sometimes they happen all at the same time, sometimes individually. Nothing on the phone indicates any problems, I have to periodically call & email myself to find out if I still have an actual phone.

I can't send SMS messages... All was working fine till about 15 minutes ago.
Every time i try to send a msg (tried diff numbers to test), it just says "sms failed" or something.
I can recieve SMS's and make phone calls.
This is really frustrating T_T
I wonder if any apps are the problem
However, the last thing I remember doing before it failed was testing out samsungs "Days" and "Feeds and Updates" widgets.
ps: I've tried rebooting a bunch of times, removing widgets etc.

As to reinstalling the App, have a look at this thread. It lists all the Apps on the Galaxy S.
If you can find the one you need (look at page 2 where a member has labelled them all) you may be able to sort it out by re-installing.
thanks for the help mate, unfortunately still no good.
I didn't remove any core apps, however i do have root.
Also, just factory reset the phone and still no good.
Im tempted to try flashing a new firmware...
I hope its not some problem with my provider or simcard.. that's hard to isolate though...

Have to say if you've factory reset then it does indeed point to the telco or card.
If you don't have another SIM card to hand why not take it down to your telco provider and ask them to slip one in and see if a different SIM card would work.
Either that or ask one of your mates if they could temporary let you use their card just to see if you can send messages from their account.
Good idea. I'll see if i can borrow someones simcard.
Also, I just flashed JFB firmware, and the situation is the same (sms not sending).

If it's still the same after flashing then yes, it points towards the SIM card.
Either that or your on a plan that restricts you sending when you go over your limit.
Wish you well finding another.
YAY FIXED!!!
I was googling it up and found some info on SMSC numbers for optus, however I couldn't figure out how to change the SMSC number on the phone.
Lucky when I called up optus customer support, it was super quickly resolved.
Messaging > Menu touch button > Settings > Message centre
Very happy, although I don't know how the problem occured in the first place... :S
(I understand that settings are erasing during firmware update, but I was using stock firmware when the problem started)

Anyone have problems receiving pictures? I'm having a weird problem. I'm using stock messaging app.. Looks like I can send pictures, but have trouble receiving them. In fact, a few times I didn't receive an MMS until I actually sent an MMS back. So I would send a picture and then immediately receive one once I sent mine. Except the one I just received was sent a day earlier. Another time I didn't get one until a few days later. I replied and my friend didn't know what the hell I was talking about.
Only started having this problem on my nexus 4. Everything seemed fine when I was on my old gnex a couple weeks ago. So is it a phone, tmobile or software problem? Anyone have similar issues?

search around here for the proper apn settings. that will fix you up.
Well wouldn't it already be proper apn settings when I inserted my SIM card?
I am having the EXACT same issue. I tried contacting T-Mobile support about they just "reset" my device on the network. It seems to work better now, but I can usually see when someone tries to send me a message. If it doesn't receive, I just send myself a picture and I'll get whatever was sent to me. However I attributed this mostly to being on 2G at home.
How good of signal are you getting and is it 2/3/4G?

nope. i am on att and just fixed a couple people in a dif thread an hour ago. this is your issue. i just dont have the t-mobile apn settings to help you further.
Do as follows and it might help you:
1. Go Settings - Apps - All.
2. Find SMS app.
3. Force close SMS app.
4. Clear data on SMS app.
5. Go APN settings.
6. Do Settings RESET of APN.
7. Reboot.
It worked for me - though I am in a different operator.
What is also important - MMS comes when you are not on WiFi. Only on Data.
Good luck!
Try these settings for your APN.

Ok, so this is really annoying and any help would be appreciated. I am spending the summer in a place where there is no 3G (i know right...) and only edge. Problem is that whenever i try and send a picture it will just sit on sending and nothing will ever happen (besides my battery dying...). I can't seem to get pictures either. The weird thing is that i traveled to somewhere with 3G today (Nashville, TN) and the pictures still didn't send. Now i know Edge is super slow, so i tried sending a small picture, 290 x 343 @ 40KB and that wouldn't send either, so file size is not the problem. Also i have tried both of these APNs, XDA and Reddit with no luck. Please don't be useless and recommend checking my APN settings because i have already done that multiple times unless you have a different one that works. I am on a postpaid ATT iPhone 5 (LTE) plan. Thank you for any useful replies. Possibly throw some BTC to whoever helps me resolve this.
Edit: Also I would like to make clear that data works while on edge, just not MMS.
First, you are on the wrong plan. You should be on the non iPhone, non LTE smartphone plan. I'm not sure if that is making a difference, but second, did you try the apns I posted in that xda thread? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=40899440
A) There is nothing wrong with being on an LTE plan, that's how so many people got their LTE to work. Secondly the iPhone portion should be find since the data works, it's the MMS that doesn't and MMS is a standard. I will try those APN settings and report back shortly.
EDIT: Tried your APN settings, same thing, stuck on sending since i replied to your post.

I pretty much figured that because the plans should be backward compatible. It may not make difference which plan you have, but AT&T sure makes a big deal about it. If those apns didn't work for you, then it is unlikely you have an apn issue. MMS is not hard to get working. You can use the two apn setup I provided or one of the single apns and as long as you have MMS in the apn type, it should work. Just make sure you are entering EXACTLY as it should be, or it will not work. Idk if AT&T will assist you since you have an unsupported device, but if you call them, the first thing they are gonna do is switch your plan. Are you rooted or not? Have you tried a factory reset.
Yes and yes, the problem arose when i arrived in this place with Edge only, previously my phone had never seen Edge. Nothing will send on edge, and when i traveled to Nashville yesterday the items still didn't send nor did any new ones even though i was connected to 3G. I doubt it is an APN problem since it was working (somewhat) fine in SLC.
Ok so something weird, it seems the problem is with my texting app. Lightflow will flash the LED signalling I received an MMS, and i will get a notification in the web portal for mighty text saying the same thing, but from my phone nothing is shown. Any ideas? Currently reflashing the latest version of PA Gapps.
Just curious, did you "delete / cancel" the stuck MMS messages, before trying to send new ones?
I have seen issues with this in the past.

Yes, i deleted the previous messages before attempting to send again.
So i reflashed gapps and all the messages people tried to send me showed up with a button to download the content, but every time I click on it it fails. Pictures still won't send as well. Also there is a new icon to the right of "sending".

Just reflashed stock and pictures seem to be sending fine, not sure though yet, and haven't been able to get anyone to send me one yet, this is with the stock APN settings. Gonna change to the ones listed here (the ones i was using) and we will see how that goes. And yes this thread will be bumped all to hell until this is resolved.
Flashed stock, and changed APN settings to the ones i was previously using, and MMS is fully functional now. Though this we have concluded that the problem MIGHT lie with PA. Going to attempt a completely clean flash of PA and i will report the results.
