hey guys, anybody stumble upon iswish yet?
its awesome and definitely looks like the best iphone style UI to date!
here's the link:
http://www.flicksoftware.com/research/index_files/Page350.htm
would love some comments from the experts....
can this be replicated in our friendly environment here?
like the wonderful SCLPF by slither!
cheers!
interesting.
has this yet been posted?
anyway. To me this is just another iPhone UI, but i like the transitions. What i want is the top to bottom gesture to mean "close program" and the bottom to top gesture to mean "minimize program"
this has already been posted

iAgain and Again and Again
Can someone post this again and add a poll to it. I would like to vote on redundancy.
There sure is a lot of forum SPACE wasted lately!
I've been following the news about this app since it was announced. Does it sound hokey to you guys? They keep delaying the download with excuses. It was supposed to be available today but due to ...bla bla bla... it's delayed another month.
Doesn't seem hokey....i'm just surprised that no one has release a different version. When I play with the GSmart today program, the bottom row does the exact same scroll effect. Just make 4 rows and use the current icons and we'll have an iphone today screen.

"A blog is something we have in the works. We have made some significant internal adjustments to handle this new initiative and we will take the wraps off of this mid August with the launch of a new website. The pace will pick up again from there, so please hang in there! "
naw, this is cool looking, but totally impractical.
Maybe the UI design team should read some usability specs.
Scrolling for 30 secs through a floating 3d ring is not what I want to do to just to launch an app.
I do believe they are only demoing the capability of the software, and does not reflect the direction or the final product in itself. As in what it can do, not what it is meant to do.
All in all, I am quite curious as to wether it would run on our poor little kaisers when it does get released. Otherwise I'll be out of luck till '09 when I will be upgrading to the new line of phones (wm7-android.)
the UI looks smooth and nice for my kid to keep him busy...
but seriously whats the point ?
developers with this kind of skill should really have some guidlines of what exaxtly to be done and how to make it as easy and usuable as possible
learn from pointUI or spb mobile shell for example
whats the deal with the website ..all the different choices are the same with that youtube video ...looks kinda bogus...

How can we make the Nexus One experience even better in our app?
We're a mapping company, so support for large images is a must, and Nexus One and Droid have it but we're stuck supporting all the low-res devices. What's the killer indoor mapping experience for the user? We'll keep digging at Point Inside dot com.
INDOOR SMART MAPS(TM) for malls! Have you ever needed to find a store, or restroom, or even the closest escalator while shopping? POINT INSIDE can help. Quickly find your way to over 100,000 stores and services in hundreds of malls across the U.S. and Canada.
G1 User
I've been playing with this app on a G1 as well as someone else's Droid and the G1 is clearly handicapping the application. Takes forever to even start the app vs. the Droid or even what I can imagine the Nexus One to do. 6 more months until my contract is up...
Amusement parks would be a good idea, IMHO, as well.

That.
And airports. I hate airport maps, they're generally useless and a real pain to use.
Android Indoor Maps API
OK, so Airport maps and Amusement Parks it is. Both have bothered me over the years. We could easily implement those. I should have made amusement parks a choice in the survey. Thanks for the feedback. Airports are on their way. Who else wants to use indoor maps through our API? Surely we're not going to be the best app to show off indoor maps.
Now...we need to prioritize these.
Latest Update for Mall Maps Released
This release has mall events and promotions. If we decide to do airports and theme-parks...then what do we show for "more content" like events and promotions in the mall???
Please take the survey as it ends in a week.
We did some optimization...but I'm not sure it will help some of the slower G1's out there.

Couple things, not sure where all you are posting this besides here, but you might get more response if you post in the "App" sub-threads, as well there is a general Android development section at the top of the main forum list with an app sub-forum there as well...
Anyways, for Amusement parks, for more content, I would say have a "quick bathroom finder" option... "remember where I parked" option... and perhaps a "prices" option and a "closed ride" option...
How about not making it look like an iPhone app?
SC
Running 720kps on 3g and "fetch this place" is taking way to long to load on the nexus. Great app but if i am already at the mall, it doesn't load fast enough.
And once its loading its no way to cancel, i have to kill the app.
Reply to pjcforpres, ScaredyCat & dallastx
@pjcforpres - Thanks for the tip. Yep...should have posted there. I don't see a way to transfer this thread to that "app sub thread" now, but will in the future. This doesn't belong under Nexus despite that being our best platform.
@ScaredyCat - Hmmm...we did several things different to accentuate Android instead of our iPhone app. In fact we don't believe in true parity between the two apps since each platform has it's advantage. Next release will have "search" and you'll be able to pull up a store's details when tapping on the map. Maybe the "search" will set it more apart from it's iPhone sibling. I'm open to suggestions if you have any. Thanks by the way.
@dallastx - Our average venue size for all the map images, spatial data and promotions/events content is ~900K so that is what's taking 15-30 seconds. We went with a full download container so you could reference the map faster when in the app (and make it available offline if you're on the plane in "airplane mode". Perhaps an "on demand" download strategy would have been better. I hate apps that query a web service for darn thing...but see the value.
Maybe there could be an option to plan a trip when at home so it could download the needed maps faster. I'm on EDGE so it would help me greatly.
Is there good GPS reception inside large malls? (multi story)
Just downloaded the app but the first thing I noticed was the lack of multi touch. And all the maps I have seen seem to be a bit low-res.
Wow, this app is better than I expected. Only suggestion, can you make the maps scroll more fluidly? As it is they seem kinda clunky when you scroll and a flick doesn't move the map like you'd expect it to. This will definitely stay on my phone, though.
Reply to britoso, apeironer, detox702
It sounds like we're onto the right venues. So thanks to everyone that took the poll.
@detox702 - Thanks for the praise. Great objective feedback. We agree, and will be working on the zoom/pan/scroll this week and next.
@apeironer - Yeah...multi-touch would be cool. We're excited that Nexus and others are heading in that direction. It's a game changer.
@britso - Good idea on trip planning (especially for airports). We don't have great GPS inside the mall...and it's platform dependent (i.e. Droid on VZW vs. Nexus on T-Mobile). We don't use the Skyhook SDK yet.
Thanks again everyone!
Back when I first got my G1 flash for Android was "going to be out in a few months" the whole time I had it. Now I understand the G1 was not very powerful, but the Nexus One certainly can handle flash. Thing is we "will see flash player sometime in early 2010", which is now. No flash player that is useful for anything but ad animation. Why is NBC the only ones who can dig their heads out of their a$$%s and allow viewing of online video? You Tube does not interest me, as I don't care what anyone who has figured out how to upload video will post to pander for starred ratings and people subscribing to their feeds. Hu lu would be great, online DIVX would be great, more networks like NBC would be great. Why the sandbagging? I spent the money on the phone for this capability amongst other things and would love to know why the wait.
The delay? It's not ready yet.
At least there's a lot of videos to show it's not far off now.
Ok, I know I'm jumping the gun, but I thought this would be a good idea. We'll need somewhere to list and discuss apps for the Evo. I know discussions will go far beyond this thread, but a place to compile a list and links to download or for instructions or to troubleshoot and so on and so forth will be handy.
I'm not sure what I'm doing, but it appears the size of posts is limited and from what I've seen the thing to do is to reserve some space at the beginning of the thread to make helpful information throughout the thread easily accessible at the beginning so I'm going to reserve some space if I can.
Advice is welcome. Please offer advice. If I choke (and embarass myself) and end up not getting an Evo (not likely as I think I want it more than sex) or fail to keep the thread updated I'm gessing we have other options like an administrator letting someone else edit my posts or moving info to a better thread or something.
I'm thinking this could get to be a huge thread so I think I'll reserve 3 more posts. If that's too many I guess they can be deleted. If we need more can an administrator insert them? If you have ideas on how we should structure this please speak up.
Since I'm jumping the gun I guess the place to start is with what we think it will come loaded with and what we want it to come with. Eventually we'll just list what's available for the Evo.
I've never done this and may prove to be unreliable and considered just making this a suggestion so if anyone is experienced and gung-ho about it and wants to take over right now feel free to step up.

UPDATE 04/06/10 1145PM EST: LOL
bad idea?
Should I request deleting? I've never used Android so I seriously am looking for help finding, installing, and getting through issues. I know there are other clueless people like me also so why not make a one stop shop for the apps this phone can use.
One thing I think I may have just realized is where to get apps. I'm a winmo user and I think I've only bought one app and never understood why anyone needed Marketplace. I've downloaded apps from all over the internet and never even been to Marketplace. Are all (or most, or what) Android apps at android.com? I read there were like 30,000 android apps, but haven't seen them. I figured a market was an iphone thing.
Some of the best threads I've read were very well organized and were updated to make info easy to find. Some threads look promising, but get really long and you never know when you'll find what you're actually looking for. Maybe I just don't search well, but often what I think is a good search produces unsatifying results. This site is huge now and very difficult to search.
I really would love input from senior members and would like to know as much as possible before I get this phone. I have actually been worried about switching over to Android, but the new hardware and network seem too good(not to mention the new windows direction). I've heard good stuff about Android, but just don't understand it.
I'm worried about being stuck with just 5 or 7 screens. I know windows has to use apps to get it's multiple screens (UL, ilaunch, claunch...), but I haven't heard of anythig like that with Android. I've settled into touchflo and really like using the slider rather than flicking like I did with UL (especially multiple times to get where I want).
I'm under the impression the Android screens are customizable in that you can use shortcuts or widgets, but I'd like to have several full screen widgets (more than 6) and a launcher and a home screen with more info (even more than touchflo/sense on winmo). Is there anything like that?
Please tell me (and other untechies) about Android. Don't be a johnson. Sorry, couldn't pass that up.
hey I'm an asshole... and proud of it... I'm not known for my kindness
POW! -> http://www.androlib.com/
you say you want 5-7 homescreens now.... wait till you use it... you might use 3-4.... MAYBE... I only use 2, but hey that's me. Also if you are that freaking skitso there's a homescreen replacement out there with up to 10 or 13 or something absolutely retarded amount of homescreens if you MUST have that many.
You can customize like there's no tomorrow, makes winmo look like a gimped iphone in that respect. You can change basically every aspect of everything if you look hard enough.
Touchflow is senceUI... senceUI is touchflow... same exact thing. If you don't like your senceUI (what will come with the evo), you can do the vanillia android home if you want, or enjoy one of the many many homescreen replacements, of which there is about a thousand different themes for icons menus screens title bars etc etc etc etc etc.
watch this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ZSeLuJBWDU
the apps don't run on the 5-7 screens, they're separate and "unlimited" based off of available ram, if you use up resources it closes the one android feels you aren't useing anymore to free up ram for your running app. It isn't as bad as it sounds in practical use, you won't notice it closing stuff in the background, the screens are only for widgets like in the video.
Like I said, customize your heart out. You don't have to be a rocket surgeon either, download a app, maybe a buck or two and go to town. There's free options, but it's not paying some big fruit company it's going into the developer's pockets so give them a buck if you like it. I have never paid over a dollar for any app I buy... and I have like 20 I felt the need to pay for. Small change in comparison to what I pay each month to use the phone... or what I paid for the phone in the first place.
Compare to a desktop or laptop and the amount of usage for a paid app... much better ratio of fun for price.
no need for this topic in my opinion, I'd recommend it be deleted, but it's your call if you feel like updating it with what you find useful in the link I provided.
I want a dollar for my time... thanks.

Most legit apps can be found in the Marketplace, both free and for $$. Off and on, you may see someone post up an app here that they're working on, but the eventual goal is to get it in the Marketplace for the most part. It seems that you went looking for Moby ****, and only found a white whale!

Sir, for that, I bestow apon you +5,000 internets
universal remote/dongle
Anyone know of anything like Totalremote from Griffin that can use the sound to ir converter for phones without an ir port?
I bought Totalremote with the converter off ebay to experiment with on my Mogul, but can't get it to work (it works on my ipaq). The Mogul just has no universal remote solution (unless I can get the ipod method from Engadget working, for which I'll have to get a male 3.5mm to male 3.5mm cord one of these days).
Since I have the converter I'm hoping there will end up being an Android version of Totalremote. I'm very hopefull since iphone is doing one using the headphone jack and since for some reason HTC has moved their jack to the top of the phone (makes you wonder).

Anyone care to discuss/recommend their favorite or essential Android apps and perhaps throw up links directly to them?

4)estrong task manager (comes with a killall widget)
5)cachemate(makes your phone zippy when used correctly)
6)handcent(oh man...)
7)linda file manager(seems to be the best one, to me)
8)some sort of battery percentage widget(i actually havent settled on one yet)
9)picsaypro(mini photoshop on your phone)
10)google voice(google it)
11)iMusic+widget(limewire on your phone)
edit:
i compiled this list by simply sliding through my app drawer, but didnt even think; the fact is, with the latest 2.1 builds theres litterally NO i.s., so i do my best to keep my app download-age as low as possible. theres actually alot of apps i download, install, use, then uninstall. a fun game you can check out it What The Doodle?! online multiplayer...draw on screen your keyword, people try to guess. I cant remember the name of the other game...Attack!! or somethig. your a cow and you tilt the phone to jump from platform to platform (like teeter, but with a cow, and the final destination is a spaceship)
i expect with the evo i.s. wont be an issue (1g?!?!?!?!?!!??!?!?!?!?!?) so maybe ill update the list as i feel the need to remember a long lost app and redownload it.

i want to be able to use my Galaxy Tab as a datalogger/basic tuner for the custom ECU running the engine in my car. (i would actually pay a dev 'decent' money to make something like this, needs to communicate with a BT RS-232 serial adapter, and the software can probably be ported from the OpenSource Linux program)
but in the realm of things that more than ~50 people will use... (thousands if it worked on any android device)
a VNC client with a small section of the screen dedicated to a trackpad with left and right click buttons and the ability to customize a small handful of keyboard buttons that are always available would be nice...

I've got a couple of suggestions for apps for the senior people at Samsung.
#1 How about an Android Market app for Galaxy Tabs sold in Dubai. Or a massive warning on the box that it doesn't come with Android Market, despite the press release for Galaxy Tab not indicating that Android Market is market specific and the Samsung UAE website showing photos of the Android Market icon on the Galaxy Tab:
http://www.samsung.com/ae/flash/p2main/low/main_KV_low_01.jpg
http://www.samsung.com/ae/system/consumer/product/2010/10/24/gt_p1000cwaxsg/5_01.jpg
#2 How about an augmented reality system. Kind of like that one described on the Samsung UAE website at http://www.samsung.com/ae/consumer/...XSG/index.idx?pagetype=prd_detail&tab=feature, but that can't be installed because it the requires Android Market app.
Those would be two ideal apps for Galaxy Tab.
Phone as standard on the us version is a must.
Agree that the Daily Briefing app is cool. Very cool actually... being able to customize it would be nice.
Have we mentioned the phone thing? ... 30 day return policies sure are nice.
I'd like a nice app for google books, specifically the 'my library' part. There are a number of good book manager apps in the market, but none of them sync or integrate with google books. Then there's one or two apps that do sync with google books, but they don't have the other functionality I'm looking for.
What it needs to do is:
Sync with Google Books, not just the full book list, but individual shelves, please.
ISBN/ISSN search, from keyboard or barcode scan (maybe even integrate google goggles to recognize the cover)
Maybe a cover search.
Text search inside books (can just pipe the results from google books)
If it has a nice UI, even better, but that's not the top priority IMHO.

I don't think it's that simple - at least not for CDMA devices.
I can only see that the carriers who have decided that this Tab can't be used as a phone, and have forced Samsung into this. Quite why they've decided this, I've no idea, but since I suppose that they feel that since the iPad can't have voice, the Tab doesn't need it either.
I suppose Samsung could release a network unlocked GSM Tab which supports both TMo and AT&T frequencies, but if they do this they may alienate the carriers who then won't carry Samsungs smartphone range, which let's face facts, is the bread and butter of their mobile business.
What you really need to be doing is boycotting the Tab in the US until the carriers see sense and allow you to use them as a phone.
We may pay more for our Tabs without a contract over here in the UK, but at least they are fully functional!

Dave

#1 How about an Android Market app for Galaxy Tabs sold in Dubai. Or a massive warning on the box that it doesn't come with Android Market, despite the press release for Galaxy Tab not indicating that Android Market is market specific and the Samsung UAE website showing photos of the Android Market icon on the Galaxy Tab:

FWIW, I don't think that its Samsungs fault that there is no Android Market in Middle-Eastern Tabs - it seems that this is the case for all Android devices (see here).
I know that's about as useful to you as a chocolate teapot, and I fully agree that there should be at least some obvious warning that there is no Market on the device.

Dave
For those who can phone...
1. Voice recognition
What really is missing from my perspective is voice recognition since we need an ear phone to speak.
It makes no sense to have to take out the phone from the pocket to place a call.
We should be able to perform this from the ear phone.
2. Task manager
It makes me crazy no to be able to go to an application from the default task manager. We can only kill apps.
3. Google maps and Contact Manager should be integrated
4. Calendar tab should appear in Phone application and integrated with Contacts Manager.
Since I am using that device for professional purpose I am more interested in real life application than in Asphalt game.

No offense Dave, but I'm talking about US GSM phones and really don't want a lecture about what I should or should not be doing.
I am quite aware that UK/Euro phones are fully functional.
The guy asked for suggestions ... I gave him one.
