List of applications that make special use of Galaxy Tab?

Hi all,
I've just ordered a Galaxy Tab, and am worried that the experience isn't going to end up a heck of a lot different to my HTC Desire. For me it's just mostly going to be used as a WIFI tab, with the 3G used when I am travelling OS (that use case will be very useful for me in fact as my Desire is firmly locked here in Japan by Softbank).
What I would like to know, is if there is a list of apps known that take advantage of the tab's extra screen size? Similar to how Samsung's own apps do it. I see on AppBrain that there are a growing number of apps that mention they've had Galaxy Tab support added, but there's generally no indication if this means they provide a more tablet-like experience to the Tab or not. So if anyone knows of any that do, please let me know.

OK I am definitely not disappointed with the Hardware itself. Great form factor and I converted a few of the office Apple fanatics to it... Some guys in my office actually bought the tab after seeing mine
It's my first Android device and... I am disappointed by Android (Flames coming closer) or more precisely by the lack of refinement of the "productivity" apps.
Let me be more precise: I come from the WM 6.5.5 world (boooh). Android OS is definitely more stable (No memory leaks, etc...) more finger friendly, etc... BUT also
* It has way less options, at least in its stock version vs my custom made WM ROM (Sure my Grandma could use it (This is iOSesque type of OS), but that's not exactly what I am expecting for myself)
* The email app, so much praised in many reviews is still way behind outlook for WM. I miss the little arrow sign indicating me whether the email was forwarded, replied, etc... Not even talking about all the options available in pOutlook that definitely simplify the everyday life. A lot of very simple things are just not there. If you have multiple attachments, you need to download them one by one (Have to wait for the first one to be downloaded to have the option to download the second one). Unbeded links and pictures are displayed immediately when in Outlook they are blocked first to protect you in case it's a fishing email. Etc, etc...
* You don't have a single box (Or let's say single app) for SMS, MMS, eMails
* Implementation of Activesync is not good, neither full. SMS are not synced, and there seems to be bugs and quirks here and there (Why the hell is my Sent box often TWO DAYS late on sync ?? Just havent found a way to fix this. It just refreshes... sometimes, when it feels like it)
* Copy and paste is not present everywhere, I cant seem to be able to copy from any text I see on the screen (In WM just long press and then you get the copy and paste menu and the ability to select some text). It's possible in some places that have been thought for, but not from anywhere
Etc, etc... I definitely appreciate the slickness of the OS, the smoothness overall (That said I believe my TP2 would also be super smooth with a Hummingbird processor on board...). The fact that it's a growing platform allows to have access to the latest apps while there was barely anything new for my TP2 these days. But yeah, honestly... a lot of the applications need more refinement. I guess this will grow with age (hopefully) but it's definitely not there yet at least out of the box
I am not saying this for the sole purpose of criticizing. I will keep my Tab and I do like it. But I thought the jump would be without regret and it's not the case for the moment. I feel more like I did a compromise and a move taht had to be (No interest in a closed platform like WP7 and can't stay on a dieing one). And hopefully some of you while reading me will point me to some solutions they found for themselves, some suggestions of third party applications. meanwhile I still go back and forth between my tab and my TP2 and I find it easier to email with the TP2 (OK the physical keyboard helps too) while also cant take my eyes off HTC Sense (This I know it's just up to me to make some effort and install the right stuff to have great home screens)

You have some valid points (copy & paste, sms+emails in one place) but the other features are so obvious.
You can't compare the native apps on Win (Outlook, Active Sync) that suppose to work well on Android. I wouldn't think this is a surprise.

Android definitely has a little bit of a learning curve. My EVO was my first android OS device and after learning the little quirks I am a borderline fanboy.
I am not sure I agree with the comparison to iOS. I think Apple does a lot more "dumbing down" where Android gives you more freedom but you have to learn how to use it. Apparently it's working well for Apple. Can't fault their success.
Are you missing copy/paste in a certain app? I used it just last night (just got my tab yesterday) copying my Launcher Pro plus key from an email to LP. Menu>More>Select Text>Copy, I think. Long press where you would like to paste.
Anyway, give it time. I think it'll grow on ya.

I believe you have to press the menu button, go to 'more' and then hit 'select text'. After that gliding your finger over text will select it. Its still not refined because it doesnt add the two 'pins' to move your selection area...that is in Gingerbread I think.

And of course since I dont have the aent emails for the past 2 days I juat cant event check this
I understand it's normal to expect Microsoft technology to be better implemented by Microsoft. However if Google wants to be serious with Android in the enterprise world they need to work on their exchange implementation

Forgot to add that even though there are lots of free apps, some of the very useful ones are not included by default. If you wnat a good RDP client --> $20 for instance (Free with WM) All adding up it makes Android a "luxuary" OS in some cases...
That said not to be unfair the market of free apps is quite impressive (compared with WM)

I think Android is great. The new Android 3D maps are amazing both on my Nexus One and Galaxy Tab.
That said, my single complaint so far is the lag in the native browser and with Dolphin HD. I can't say I blame this on Android OS because my N1 does not have this problem. I'm a noob so I blame this on Samsung.

Got that 3 days ago, an incoming sms displaying the wrong contact!... So I found that after answering to that same wrong contact, who warned me I probably have mistaken. I wonder how this can be possible... Samsung app?

Except that unlike Android, WM is not free in and of itself anyway, so the comparison is slightly flawed - only slightly though because as an end user you do not pay directly for WM, the OEM does!
Personally, I've found Wyse PocketCloud to be excellent, even in its free incarnation - it was so good, I bought the Pro version!
Of course, no OS is perfect - despite WM6s age, it still has some strengths. In many ways, it's a shame that MS threw the baby out with the bathwater with WP7!

Android gets a lot of blame for things that have been modified by the vendor. I've been on Android since the launch of the G1. One thing I can tell you is every device is different. HTC has their own Exchange client, same with Samsung. Many times I see their proprietary apps cause these problems. It's the price we pay for open.
The Galaxy Tab's ROM is pretty flawed. Typical for a first gen device. I'm counting the days till an update is released.
My suggestion is go with an Exchange client from the market. Touchdown (no longer called that) was generally considered the best or just hang on till the next update. For SMS I use Handcent which I love.

All enterprise apps demand big bucks. In Wimo's case that's a MS app hence free. But all the other enterprise stuff is $$$ for any platform. I agree with the other poster, PocketCloud is very good. I also have an Ipad and can tell you their apps are totally "luxuary" priced.
Give the platform more time. You're new and things are different so you're just going to see the negatives. Over time I would be shocked if you could even look at a wimo device...much less use it on a daily basis.

Yeah I think we can blame Samsung about this. It's a real shamr cause I answered in a similar fashion to the wrong girl... Got in little trouble... But in the end kind of funny

Been reading the previous posts. My point was not to be critical of the OS itself. I do believe it's a much better OS than WM. It was much more about the applications that are still rough on the edges and not as mature as for other platforms
another example: in the samsung messaging application you cannot click on an HTML link to go straight to the webpage. Which year are we? 2005?

I too am very happy with my TP2, but I want a 7" phone. Although the Tab is the most close, it is still not there: many web contents are still available to WM and iPad only, the CDMA versions cannot make calls and are too pricey for the sluggish built-in browser.

I have both now
Just need to find a good way to sync SMS between both...
Sad point is in the US you cannot have 2 SIMs with the same number. Otherwise would be living ina perfect world

Honestly Android is a cool toy but feels so far from a professional well rounded product and only comparing with WM 6.5...

This is why android is so great though...you said you had no complaints about the hardware being used, and I hear that a lot.
There are so many developers working on android devices including the tab trying to improve the UI and enable hardware acceleration etc.
I think that within a few months the tab will have roms that will fix or work around the various issues that are present in the current tab software.

Agreed android has a great future ahead
but there is quote some work to do. We are not there yet!!

I think the point is that Android scores lots of points where WinMo scores none, and vice versa!
My business uses Google Apps for Domains, so Android is a massive win for me. If your an MS shop, WinMo stills holds a great hand though 3rd party apps on Android can fill many of the gaps.
Over time we will see an awful lot of convergence - WP7 will get better and so will Android.
To be honest, for the most part, thus far Google have pitched Android as a consumer rather than business OS, and have relied on 3rd parties to provide full business integration. I expect 2011 will bring more to the biz table.

Spread out apps...

Hello XDA,
This is a combination of an angry rant as well as a question (hence why I decided to put it in General and not Q&A). Why the hell is the application so spread out and lacking for tablets when it can run them?!
For example when I do a search on the Android Market for "Worms" (EA Games game) I have three choices only one of which works for my Infuse 4G but none work on my Galaxy Tab 10.1 that blows the Infuse out of the water (spec wise).
This is also true for Gameloft games. There is no option to download it for my tablet directly from them, but a simple google search gives me sites where I can download the Game Data and the APK and get these (and the market apps) to run perfectly on my Galaxy Tab.
This is a huge problem that I can can get the games, and having them working on my tab via sideloading and blatant pirating, but am unable to get them via the marketplace. Personally this is a fault of Android. I love how open it is, and how it allows for its users to do almost anything they want, but it is also a massive problem. I should be able to go the market and find ANY game or application that will work on my Tablet without having to pirate them due to the lack of support.
Maybe it's just me, but do you guys feel that this shouldn't be needed and is a problem of Android?
As I stated before, I do. I'm a techie so going to a website and getting this is no problem for me, but I gave the Tab as a gift to my mother, she would not be able to understand what to do and would be limited by the marketplace and upset when she can't find the application she wants.

To add insult to injury, it's also very annoying when the market says that the application is "incompatible" with my phone/tablet yet I can sideload and it works perfeclty. A part of me is starting to feel that the Market Place should be the ONLY place you can get applications, but one can offer their own market, kind of like how Amazon and Tegra Zone do it.
The single best example of sideloading apps that works great:

Yeah, it's strange. It's on the developer, in the end, to mark the app as 3.x compatible, but I'm surprised so many opt out when they could be reaching a larger audience effortlessly. (Netflix, Facebook, many games...)

The thread is not deleted and yes production of the xoom has stopped about 1 1/2 months ago. What is your point?

No...no it hasn't. A new Xoom recently passed the FCC with only the LTE added to it, and yes the thread was deleted. But I digress.

Yes production has stopped. The LTE units are just 3G units that have already been produced a LONG time ago, all they did was apply the LTE upgrade to it which was not ready in time for the 3G units launch and why they offer a free upgrade to 3G users.

Your stupidity makes my head hurt. I did research and no there has not been any stopped production, it was only rumor. Please note:

But anyways, back to the topic on hand. Do you have anything useful to add or you going to continue to speak out of your ass and offer nothing to the topic of app spreading and poor consolidation of apps that say they don't work but truly do, or are you done since Netflix is a great example of one and completely debunked your initial approach?

Look at it from the developers point of view. The app isn't tablet ready. However, if they make available for tablets in the app store then the implication is that it is tablet ready. If the implication is that it's tablet ready then their customers who load it on a tablet will expect support when they load it on a tablet.
Even worse, look at the comments on apps that aren't tablet ready. They nag, whine and rip the author because it doesn't look or work right on a tablet.
If I were a developer and my app wasn't tablet ready I'd do everything possible to keep it off the app store for tablets.
If a customer side loads it then that's fine, they must support themselves.
Here's another reson it might not be available on the Google app store. There are multiple, competing app stores. Thank goodness for choice. Maybe an author has decided to give one of the other stores an exclusive for a period of time.
See? Many reasons why it's not there.

I'm going to play Devil's Advocate.
Go download the Cartoon Netwoork Application. On the phone it is AMAZING, it allows for full episodes and clips and games, so it is a nice time passer when I want to relive my younger days or let my nephew play with it. You cn download it for the Galaxy Tab, but it is neigh unusable for the Tab due to only being in the small rectangle.
So this is contrary to your point and on for mine. This is an application that does not work for the Tab, for the most part, but is available via the marketplace, while applications that are typically are not optimized for the tab or stated as working do in fact for it and are NOT available on the marketplace.
While this may be the except and not the rule it is annoying and unacceptable that Google/Developers do this and questions the future of the Android Operatin System with regards to the experience as the end user...especially against other Tablet OSes that have a centralized place to get applications that do work for the device.

I hear ya. Many developers don't have customer service skills and simply don't care how their app looks on a tablet and how many bad comments they'll get. Others try to protect their brand and want their customers have the best possible experience.

Stuck with Samsung software...

Just speculating but my guess is to get a full and true experience with this device (edge screen) we'll most likely need to stick with Samsung's software. I can't imagine Google will build in edge possibilities with say Gmail, Calendar, Keep etc. I hope I'm wrong but I just can't see it.
I'm sure the brilliant minds here will help the situation out though.

I think that may be totally possible and buying it thinking that there will be a ton of 3rd party dev would be slightly delusional

3rd party will kick in but I bet it will take a while. That a small market of people who have the phone.
Google has a few things but very small. They have to do list, Gmail icon etc.. nothing big.
I'd like to see :
Ebay panel for ending soon item live update.
Smart remote panel for top 5 frav. channels and while on that panel the volume keys should work for the tv.
Facebook panel for status from selected people scrolling.
And probably some more stuff I can't think of right now. Lol. One can dream can't they.
But I bet we will start to see some more panels once more people start to get the phone.

Yup, existing Note 4 user here, still going strong. Was a pre-ordered Note 7 customer and now look where we are today...
The live 'unboxing' presentation just made me nauseous. "Partnered with Google" "Working alongside Microsoft"

I voted the ones more important. But I'll tell you the ones that I absolutely do not find interesting: Bixby and Samsung Connect.
I have my own DDNS service running, so I do not need any cloud service from Samsung to get the status of my home smart devices. Bixby is replicating Google Assistant functionality, so it's more bloat added to the system and more companies with my life's metadata and data. As it wasn't hard enough to block such information leaks.
Dex, IP68, accessores, IRIS scanner and face recognition are cool.

All of the above items, but the S8+ 6.2 Screen is number one!

I am looking forward to Bluetooth 5.0 and better security logon. I hate the fingerprint reader. Whenever I golf, it can't read my fingerprint for a few days. Especially when I re-grip my clubs!!

It's actually the complete opposite of Google Assistant. It's embedded deep into the core functionality of the phone. Assistant is mainly for providing you information, with a few basic control features on top while Bixby allows much control over the device hardware and software via voice commands. It's a new feature that will need time to develop, Samsung wants to give you the option to do everything on your phone without having to touch it. One day you might not have to.
It's not for everyone though, you won't have to use it.

I don't see how it can be completely the opposite. It has more control over your device to provide information.

Does the world really need another assistant? Fragmentation is already bad enough on Android. So expecting from app developers to implement voice commands for other assistants besides Googles own doesn't seem like a smart move.

not much improvement over the S7/S7Edge.. high price for a little bit extra. Fingerprint on the back, really?
Going for the HTC U (Ocean, SD835) or wait for Note 8

I do see your point and you are right about the fragmentation. That's the problem with open source. Companies want to go their own separate ways with it. AI is the next logical step in technology though. In the far future I don't imagine people still tapping away on screens, we will have Robotics and very advanced AI systems providing us with all the information we need.
Googles Assistant is a great bit of software and I use it a fair bit. It just can't integrate deep enough with every device, because of the fragmentation you mention. If we only had Google devices it would become a lot more useful.
I won't have that much need for Bixby but Samsung saw the need in the Mass market, or else they would not have bothered. There will be many that do actually want it. Especially disabled people and for use while driving. Samsung can hook it deep into the core functionality and allow control over every aspect of the device...one day.
Apple can do what they want as they have full control over their software and hardware. Samsung are trying to do the same thing. As they are one of the only Android phone makers that actually make a profit, they might make a success of it. Who knows.
I think we will see some rival OS in the future, they come and go. I can't see Android and iOS lasting forever. Samsung will go their own way one day.

Maybe I exaggerated some what lol. What I meant is that Bixby is Samsung's attempt at allowing hands free control over their phones. It's the start, so I expect it to get better with time and allow for almost total control. It won't just be for information. You will be able to control the camera, edit photos via voice commands, turn things on and off and do most of the things you have to touch the screen for. Handy if you're disabled or unable to hold your phone at the time.
I doubt I'll be using it much but it's still nice to gain new features. There will always be those that do have a use for it. Hopefully those that don't, will have the option to disregard it entirely.

Screen and camera are my main reasons. Plus after about 9 years with HTC phones, since the fuze, it's time for a change. And 64gb internal is a nice bonus.
