How are the Intel and Qualcomm parts really connected? - Shift General

Hi.
I understand that they are connected through an USB connection.
What I don´t understand is why we have to use USBTool to connect ActiveSync or any other thing.
Isn´t the connection already stablished for the modem? I surely don´t have to do anything for Vista to use the modem, and vista can see the state of the modem connection without using USBTool.
Any idea on this?
Daniel

The USBTool lets RNDIS to work, Otherwise Vista side sees WinMo as a modem not as a Windows Mobile. You turn off Windows Mobile, you would not see the modem running. And if you turn off USBTool, you would not see the Windows Mobile synched.
Thanks

No - USBTool is *not* required for RNDIS and Vista never sees the WinMo side as a modem.

Hi,
I have read, tried, and seen for myself.
If you use the modem in Vista and then disconnect the modem, for a short while, WM IS visible in Vista and WMDC CAN connect.
This situation only lasts a short while however. Not enough time to sync, but long enough to copy a small file or two.
So, that means.... what?
I don't know, but I guess that it must be possible to connect to WM without switching to WM, and run USB-tool...
That would be nice.
However, this is just a very small inconvenience (compared with no SD etc.)
I, for one, am glad that USB-tool works
greetz,
Pfeffa-rah

i 'm completly agree with you about SD limitation !
where is the one who will liberate SD acces from WM side of the Shift
where is he
lol

AAAHHHHH this phone stinks!!!!!!!!

WHY DOSN'T Activesync work?????
I can put up with Activesync not working under VPC on my Mac but I CANNOT put up with it not Activesyncing with a brand new 2 month old IBM laptop running XP Pro and all the latest patches.
Is it the phone that is at fault or Microsoft or a combination?????
My old PDA2K Activesyncs fine on BOTH VPC and the IBM so why not this device?
Anyone PLEASE HELP ME.......
Robin
Are you using ActiveSync v.4.1?
If it is a Windows Mobile 5 device (Wizard, Universal) instead of a Windows Mobile 2003SE Device, you need a minimum version 4.1 of ActiveSync
Yup it is a Wizard and I am using AS 4.1.
I have tried Firewall on, off, VPN on, off.
I have de-installed and re-installed 4.1.
Still NOTHING.
The Laptop see's new hardware, says it has installed okay and then AS does NOTHING.!!!!!!!!
Robin
in my case it was the firewall
you sure both your windows and software firewall is off?
also check in network connections that your phone network connection is connected
what happens in activesync... errors? does it display its trying to sync ? just "it is not syncing" doesnt help
If the laptop sees the device as new hardware and not the actual device it means that you do not have active Synch 4.1 or that the installation was borked . because 4.1 includes the drivers for this phone to be recognized by windows.. so if you had 4.1 it would show your phone name and then it might not have worked , but not the way you are describing it now.
Also you might wanna put up a bit more objective title when posting something like this if you want psotive feedback instead of flamez...
very good point avocaz
totally missed the point that it does detect but possibly does not install which would be down the active sync 4.1 not being there

1. Certainly I turned off the Windows Firewall, don't know about any other Firewall. HOWEVER the fact my PDA2K can connect surely rules out a Firewall problem?
2. Don't know how to do this? I am a Mac user and am using XP JUST to sync my phone.
3. Nothing happens in Activesync. I get the normal, bing bong chime. but the AS icon does not turn green or open.
If I manually open AS and tellit to cennect it cannot find an attached PDA.
On the other hand if I attach my PDA2K I get the bing bong, the icon turns green, AS opens fine.
Is that clearer?
Is there any more info you need?

But surely the fact that when I connect my PDA2K AS 4.1 opens and works indicates it IS there and working?
If I check its version it says 4.1?
AS 4.1 is the first instal of AS on this machine, never had an earlier version on it.
Sorry about the title but I guessed I would at least get some response with it.
I am pulling my hair out here and don't want to return the phone but without a computer connection it is totally useless to me.
Robin
Its not your desktop. Its the AS client on the device itself that causes these problems. Apparently, the next ROM Update is supposed to fix all AS issues. Just hold on till mid-Jan.

Sounds reasonable HOWEVER if I cannot get the damn thing to connect to a PC I am never going to be able to laod the new rom to fix the problem it won't connect to a pc, so I won't be able to connect ot a PC ...........
I am losing it big time...
How would I install the update without a PC connection?
Robin
Use the wifi to download the rom ? Sorry your having problems but this phone definately doesnt stink. Havent put mine down since Christmas day .... the wife is definately not pleased. She keeps giving it daggers
Okay
My FIRST bit of success.
I found out my laptop has a IRD port and the phone HAS connected via this so it is most certainly a USB issue.
Now the question is can a rom update be done of IRD or does it need to be the USB connection?
Robin
PS WiFI download would not help as the rom needs to be loaded FROM a PC.
Just a thought, but are you connecting via a usb hub?
Best not to, and I find always using the same usb socket also helps...

Had the same problem.

Good luck,

DO NOT INSTALL ROM UPDATE VIA IR.
It should be done via USB ONLY. Thats one of the main instructions in the ROM update page that pops up on executing the RU file.
I had problems because of the ports. AS4.X needs a hand full of ports to communicate with the PPC, in my case TCP Port 990 was already in use.

HOw do I check this, I am not very PC Literate.
I am much more used to a Mac where things normally 'just work' :?
I have just noticed a couple of things following some of the Microsoft trouble shooting guide.
If I have AS open on the KJAM it shows the spinning green button and that it is trying to connect, still nothing on the PC end.
HOWEVER what I did notice on the PC end in Device Manager is that a Windows mobile-based device appears under netowrk connectors.
So SOME KIND of connection IS happening.
Robin
PS Many thanks for being a sounding board for me and your helpful ideas, it is very much appreciated, I just wish I was making more progress.
Let me set the record straight.
This phone does NOT stink. The more I use it the more I like it.
Certainly it is a big improvement over my PDA2K in size and usability.
HOWEVER I still cannot get it to connect to my laptop and I am getting so frustrated cause its the last thing left for me before I really start to LIKE this phone..............
Any more ideas out there because I have tried everything I can think of with no luck at all except via IRDA.

Does IE work in Vista via GPRS? If not, when you go 'Control Panel' 'Network Sharing Center' 'Network Connections' do you see the NDIS connection?
Have you left the USB tool connected in Snapvue (if you use it!) the last time you used both Vista and Snapvue together?
If USB tool was left connected, sometimes the Modem will not pass IP activity from a standby of Vista, shutdown Vista, then in USBtool in Snapvue, select detach from Vista. When Vista resarts it should see the Modem but you may need to restart it from Comm Manager.
yes left open the usbtool in snavue and ndis is present but got just a message

Just had exactly the same message on mine.
Method I used..
Wireless Network disabled with Modem on, go to Control Panel, Device Manager. Right click on NDIS modem under Network Devices (it should be showing an exclamation mark) and select uninstall.
Restart Vista and it will reload the driver correctly.

Vista Mobile Device Sync Problems

I have search everything here and on HTC and on Verizon and here is where I am stuck. Using DCD 3.2.0 (but had same problem with 3.1.6) and latest Radio Rom. It seems to connect just fine to a Windows XP activesync 4.5 computer but will not connect to the Mobile Device Center on Vista (32bit).
Looking into the device manager I do see the Mobile Devices/HTC USB Sync driver is active but I do not see the Portable Devices/XV 6800 driver at all.
I do have the "Enable Advanced Network Functioinality" unchecked. I have uninstalled all the drivers and Mobile Sync software and rebooted everything. I even have tried the USB splitter. It seems to half recognize the phone in Vista but the other half is the Mobile Sync part. I do get an error on the phone that says "To synchronize this device, you must install ActiveSync 4.5 or newer on your desktop computer." This is sooooo frustrating as it worked one time on Vista, I think either DCD 3.0.x or maybe earlier and now it only works on XP.
What am I missing here??????

I have tried different USB ports and no Joy. It looks like it recognizes it as the HTC USB Sync driver shows up and it makes a noise that it found a USB device. I don't have another Vista machine but maybe a 64bit windows 2003 server would be the same. Probably not. It did work once a few DCD Roms ago but not since.
Random Disconnects
I am having a similar problem. Evern since moving to DCD 3.12, I have had a similar problem. I can manage to get connected sometimes but it will randomly disconnect.
For a while I switched to No2Chem and didnt experience the problem.

Can you post what devices show up when you are connected?
When I went from 3.1.4 to 3.2.0 I started having issues with Sync Center (Vista Ultimate 32-bit) as well. If I restart the PC it works fine for a while, but then suddenly you hear the USB device disconnect noise and thats all she wrote.
The device's charge LED is on, but it doesn't show up in vista anymore unless you restart the PC.
With 3.1.4 I never had this issue.
I wrote up an ActiveSync/mobile Device Manager Troubleshooting Guide in the Wiki, did you try all of those steps?

Go under settings/connections/USB to PC and uncheck the Enable advanced network functionality and see if that works for you on Vista.
also make sure you check your network connections, and make sure the Remote NDIS Connection (This is your Pocket PC, Smartphone) And have the IP Configuration set to automatic, as i forgot to put it back after using it as a modem for my laptop. This also prevents active sync from working.
Just a thought, as i had a similar problem, and my fix was reverting back IP settings to Automatic. Try this if you haven't

DV8, I have tried both on and off. It seems that off will act like the PPC with it on it acts like the remote NDIS network adapter like if you want to teather it.
ranmasaotome510, If I don't select the advanced network functioinality I never get the Remote NDIS Connection to change anything. All I get is the HTC USB Sync driver under the Mobile Devices and that is it. If I check the advanced network functionality I only get the Microsoft Widnows Mobile Remote Adapter driver and not the HTC USB sync driver. Either way WESCOMM doesn't find the device.
I used the view hidden devices and removed everything I could find but I never can find this driver: Portable Devices\PocketPC to uninstall it. I have also uninstalled WMDC a couple of times and have downloaded and installed the latest. This works fine on XP with out fail. I am also using office 2007 but this did work on this Vista machine with an earlier ROM.
No clue if this is related, but I found two copies of Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface in device manager. One was operational and the other was not. I removed the one with the yellow bang on it and plugged in my phone. Immediately Sync Center saw it and allowed me to create a connection with the phone.
Dumb luck? Maybe.

Hello all together,
some days ago I have bought a new S710 Vox phone and had no luck with synchronizing it with my Vista PC. Same problem as jambrose.
Then I read the posting about Teredo Tunneling-Adapter, deleted it from my system, rebooted the PC and surprise, the connection to my Vox works fine. Thank you!

Yes, I found it in the Device Manager under Network.
But, this works only few days. My PC normaly runs all around the day und so it works until yesterday when I had to reboot my system because I had installed a software update. After this reboot the S710 has the same problem again. Even the Teredo Tunneling Adapter is still not there.

HELP!
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I cannot get this resolved to save my arse!
I have tried EVERYTHING...just spent 3 hours looking up stuff, and re-reading to try and find something.
What the problem is:
My Verizon XV6800 connects to my Vista laptop, but does not OPEN up WMDC. If I have "Advanced Function" unchecked, then my laptop finds my ppc when connected, but does not open up WMDC. On my phone, a little connection icon goes in the bottom tray. Other times, I get the "you do not have active sync 4.5 installed" error.
What I've tried:
Uninstalling/reinstalled
net localgroup add administrators etc.
I am at a loss.
I just want to sync my Mogul with my Vista Laptop, so that I can install apps and sync email! UGH!
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Do you have a firewall running on your laptop? I had trouble connecting also since I have BitDefender running. I had to open up some ports to get it working. Also, prior to connecting the USB, I would exit the ActiveSync process. The connection will start a new instance of it automatically.

How to use Wifi in Liberated Snapview

This is one of the oldest tricks in windows mobile history I used this since I had my himalaya on 04.
Steps:
1. Liberate Snapview
2. Connect vista to wireless
3. Attach snapview to vista
4. Open WMDC and Click Mobile device settings
5. In the "This computer is connected to:" field set it to internet then ok!
You should now be able to use wifi while in snapview but it will drain heaps of battery as compared to running snapview alone. It would definitely be better to have bt, wifi, and sd running on snap view rather than having to open vista.
Sorry that if you had Vista turn on, what the point to use the Windows Mobiles?
My WM6 is responding much slower compare to the Vista when access the internet.
the point is when there is wifi and you just want to trip using wm then do this.
Can't say I can see the point of this either. If I've got boot Vista to use WiFi, I might as well use Vista for internet access. Currently, I use WM as a low power browsing solution and as a Citrix client, and it works very well for me. If we can get SD card, I'd use it for a whole lot more, but things have gone quiet on this front. Personally, I think we'll see GPS shortly, but I don't think that the SD/WiFi/BT are physically connected to the WM part of the machine so will never be a native option - I'd love to be wrong on this though.
Just my opinion of course, and other peoples mileage may vary considerably!
Regards,
Dave
My guess is that it is conencted, but in such a way it doesn't answer to the WM side until something is done for that. By default, It's probably hooked by vista, even when vista is turned off.

Win7 need generic rndis driver?

Hi,
Why Win7 show an error when connected my HD2 to PC?
Anyone know how to fix this problem?
Thanks for your big help.
Do a search of this forum (Leo) on connecting the HD2 with Windows Mobile Device Center. You will find quite a few suggestions and some solutions to your problem. One of them should work for you.
Easy: Use Windows Update when installing the driver (let windows update get the driver for you) and it will download the correct drivers including the Mobile Device Center.

I installed windows mobile device center
I'm having a similar problem with Win7 32 bit (but only on my home Quad Core PC- the Office Win7 PC works fine!)- it won't connect in RNDIS mode.
Try connecting in simple mode- go Settings/Other/USB to PC and make sure the 'Enable faster data synchronisation' box is UNchecked.
This may well kick the connection into action- works on mine, but still won't connect in advanced mode.
It might well be your firewall that's the problem. In my case, ESET Smart Security, it is. I also have to disable 'Enable faster data synchronisation' to synchronise with ActiveSync. The unrecognised (or blocked) rndis drivers also mean I can't update the HD2 rom on my own PC.
If anyone finds a good solution it's welcome.

I wasn't so lucky- eventually had to go into the PCs device manager and delete the USB Root Hub entries. These are then reloaded fresh at the next startup and the correct driver installation kicks in All OK now!
