Usage:
- Tap and hold outside of a PictureBox element and select "Load Configuration File" *
- Exit is in the same menu
- Tap on a picture and sound plays
- ???????
- Profit!
*Due to an irritating bug in the .NET compact framework, files can only be seen in "user areas" such as My Documents, so you must place the configuration file there, but providing the files path are correct, the resources can go in *any* folder
Sound files can be in any format, you will hear the system default beep if the file cannot be played. Images can be in any format, and will be scaled to 100x100px when loaded in. If you want them to be sharp, try to keep them as close to this resolution as possible
Note: This has been made in the QVGA environment, but should scale to VGA correctly, images will have to be 200x200px to be sharp as they are scaled up.

Edit: Forgot to say, i've included a test set, although there are no sounds in it. This can be edited/removed, and is only really there to give you a head start, and to save me explaining how it works...

Glad you like it. I'd have liked to make it a little simpler to use. If I had a folder browser object, I could simply get a folder to look in, and it'd be alot easier to configure and move around...
Alas, it's not in the 3.5 conpact framework, so i'd have to make my own. If more people like it, I may consider improving it though...

I think it is a great little app, so far in idea I just haven't been able to get the config to load.

It was compiled for 3.5, and probably won't run with 2.0. To open the config, you need to tap and hold at the edge of the white area of the form, and a menu will appear. Select the "load option" from in there.
For the program to "see" the config file, it has to be in "my documents" either on the device, or on a storage card/internal storage. The config file *does not* have to be in the same place as the resources, but the file locations will have to be changed. I'm afraid, as I mentioned in the first post, that this is a limitation which I have no immediate control over, unless I make my own control... Sorry
As can be seen in this scr the ini file should be visable below the Templates folder but the config load does not see it.... normally the file type would indicate *.ini etc... but instead says "Configuration Files

Sorry about that, for some reason the IDE likes wrapping things like the filters in "s
The filter was set to '"Configuration Files|*.ini"' rather than 'Configuration Files|*.ini'.
Try re-downloading the archive from the same place, i've corrected it now. You can use the same config file as before. Apologies for my silly little mistake

Hi i know this sounds cheeky but could you post what you have done so we can use it as some of us are too lazy or stupid to do it ourselves. It would be good if people could post there sounds and pics too so we can all see what our kiddies prefer. Thanks again to brins0 for doing this and also to schmeichler who started the ball rolling.
Once i`ve seen how people have done there`s i`ll have a go myself!
@johnboywilson
OK... to use my config you must copy the "Learn Animals" folder to the root of your "Internal Storage". Follow Brins0's instructions to load the config from your "My Documents Folder"
Don't become too complacent however.
If your not running on a Diamond or you want to store the "Learn Animals" folder in a different location you will have to edit the "Learn Animals.ini" to reflect your chosen path.
zip attached with wav and png's (I've made my images 100x100)

Hope some youngsters enjoy.

Cool your a star i`ll give it a go....
Wow, I didn't realise that such a simple program would be such a big hit. I may try and change the way configurations are stored to make it a little easier, if I can work out how to get just a folder name. Then you wouldn't have to have a config file at all, just a folder with images and sounds labelled 1 to 6.
By the way, it will work with any kind of image and sound, not just PNGs and WAVs. I only used those to demonstrate, coz they are the file types which suffer least from compression.
Hi, this is very cool just what i needed. I have found a problem though. Its nowt to do with the programming its more to do with my daughter!

One thing I could try would be forcing the form to be the top most window at all times, but this means that you cannot do anything until you close the application, or another window insists on being the top most form.
Edit: another way I thaught of doing this, would be to hook into the event for when the form loses focus, and then re-show the form when the event is fired. Although this would mean there's no way of getting out if there is a problem with the program... The best thing to do would be to ahve an option in the menu, defaulting to on, which will keep the window focused at all times...
I'll experiment later on for you... Check back later

I've made the proposed changes now, and the form is always on top now, irrigardless of whether there's another form active. Unfortunately, sometimes the upper bar shows through if another application is opened, but after tapping on the form, it vanishes again...
Hope that's better for you now

I've developed a nifty little tray application that lets you enable/disable and move up/down items on your today page. This saves a lot of time when you're playing around with today screen plug ins, compared to going through the settings pane.

Hi.
This is very good and saves lots of time. I had to put a short cut in the startup folder myself. Apart from that its perfect on my PDA2K.
Thanks,
Ian Watson
@skip: Looks like your TodayPrograms plugin is about what I am looking for, except: From what what i read is that you put all shortcuts in the 'Programs' folder on the plugin. I would like to have only the shortcuts in a specific (best but not neccesary would be a configurable...) folder shown . . .
Could you introduce that into your plugin?
Great that someone is trying it out!
Like I said it is still a beta version, although I am not aware of any bugs per se. I'll definitely make so that it automatically installs in the startup folder. Also, a program icon would not be too shabby.

Edsub, your suggestion is not a bad one at all. I first had an idea to make a toggle for every program whether it would show on the today screen or not.
Now I'm thinking that your idea might be even better, let the user choose a folder from which to get the shortcuts. This would allow for an even more flexible choice of programs. However, this would definitely make it harder to customize for people who would rather not deal with the file system and shortcuts.
I'll look into it.
One question: Is a .EXE installer desirable? I'll definitely make the my programs available as .CABs, but would anyone prefer a .EXE installer for Windows and Active Sync?
Skip
IMO a CAB is better. Just copy to the device & tap . . .
With .exe you allways get the question if its a PC or PPC exe . . . .
Hi.
Is it possible for you to add OPTIONS in the menu to allow you to get to the options screen for that item.
Thanks,
Ian

You should always take care about putting anything in the startup directory, since this modifies the device's behaviour at startup. If there is a problem which requires a reset, the user might not like you messing with startup - I don't.

Disagree again I'm afraid, what about people who don't want to install to the default location but want to put the s/w on a Storage card? Unless you have CABinstaller you can't easily. Always provide both options if you want to keep the users happy.
That's a good idea. I should be able to call up the options screen somehow. I'll see when I find time to work on it.

Hi LeSkip, good start, really like to today tray items program.
With respect to the Today Program yes an EXE installer would be great. I like your original idea to be able to choose which programs to display.
Also if I choose say 15 programs to display it overlaps the programs instead of say placing on a second line or like iLauncher having an Icon to get to the second set. Also making the icon Size configurable would be great.
I have the Icons on my screen, but tapping one does not start the program. Also I have choosen 8 icons to display, the eight Icon is cutoff (it is cutoff about 1/2 cm before the right side of the screen).
Today Programs is definitely far from finished, I just wanted to see there was a user base for this kind of application.
An option to use 16x16 icons instead of the large 32x32 is high on my to-do list. Letting the user show more than the number of programs that actually fits on the screen isn't much use, so I'll just limit the number to whatever width the screen has.
I am working on tapping as a way of launching.
Small arrows that show when there are more programs to scroll to will be added soon.
The right side cut off has to do with the program being launched when a scroll bar was visible. I'll try to solve this problem.

Hi.
I have only installed the Tray Today software. Is the other software with the icons for creating software shortcuts? I use tdLaunch: http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=176
The Tray Today software is really good - even better with an "options" in the menu . But there seems to be quite a few other icon shortcut software for the Today Screen. Is yours going to be any different to others? Like I said, I have not installed yours yet.
Regards,
Ian Watson
The sole purpose of "Today programs" (horrible development name) is easy access to the Programs folder with the D-pad. I was getting annoyed with having to click Start>Programs to access them. I haven't tried any similar products, but there's probably several of them.
Skip
Possible new name: Today Switcher... because the natural progression of this tool has got to be to permit people to store multiple Today configurations and switch between them via the tray tool.
It's something I would love to develop - I believe there's one buggy one out there - but I just don't have the hours in the day! So go for it, the world is waiting for it!

cktlcmd: GIMP and paint.net are both free and are more than capable for simple jpg > bmp conversion.
However, even free-er than free, load a jpg into internet explorer, choose file > save as, and save as a .bmp. Voila

I was visiting your site and saw VJBassHue. I wanted to ask how can I change the color, there was no explanation on your site.
Another question please, out of topic: How do you setup SmallMenu to show your desired folders or applications?
cktlcmd: VJBaseHue. Have a hunt around for ZeBoxx's posts/theory on the matter (also his enormous contributions in the Wiki).
VJBaseHue is, like most of my stuff, a command line tool.
If you need any help with command lines (I'm sure not!), check here:
http://vijay555support.host4phpbb.com/viewtopic.php?t=30
check out ZeBoxx's example shortcuts that come with VJBaseHue.
Then use his online chart, choose a colour, and edit the shortcuts.
eg
\program files\vijay555\vjbasehue\vjbasehue.exe 187
I think - from memory!

I'm using the Plus version, but basically you just point it towards a folder, containing subfolders or shortcuts to other folders, and it parses out a menu from there. Extremely customisable, too much so perhaps, but once I made the effort, I haven't changed my setup on both WM5 and Wm2003.

Yes, I got as far as this. I too bought the plus version after I read your recomendation about SmallMenu. I am glad I did. Basically my question was misunderstood. What I want to know is how can I change the format of small menu? I checked the settings in small menu and it has no options like the one showed on your picture from your above post. How can I make it look like your settings?
I was using the bitmap conversion to change the windows icon on the start menu using SmallMenu. I was successful to change the windows start icon to a Palm icon. Just playing around a bit.
Christian: sorry, I'm still not quite getting which bit you can't customise?
Do you mean like the folder icons, eg how I have a star for favorites? Or something else?

Yes, the folder icons, etc... How did you arrange it that way? SmallMenu has no check lists as to which applications would be allowed to be showed or suppressed.
Thanks for your patience.
Hey, thanks for your patience!
Ok, Assuming you're talking about my top level menu, !Favorites etc, I use the ! to ensure important folders come before any others. They're arranged alphabetically of course.
To get the icon in the menu, eg the star for favorites, you need an icon library in a dll or .exe.
10:
Make a shortcut (best perhaps with notepad the first time, after that use an explorer program) and write:
30#"\Windows\PHMShell32.dll,-173"
Save that into Icon.lnk.
Here I'm using the icon library that came with PHM Tools. Very useful.
Stick the Icon.lnk into any folder, and probably after a reboot, you'll have a star for your folder icon.
Goto 10
break;
Ok. So now you have nicely iconed folders, just arrange your subfolders appropriately, and SmallMenu will parse and cascade .lnks and subfolders into nice menus.

Thanks very much Vijay!
I've made a simple program to modify the registry entries concerning the sounds made on certain events inside the Windows Mobile operating system, such as the sound played when an error occurs, or when you open a program.
To enable the new events on your device, run the program, then reboot. Once rebooted, open it again to configure the new sound events. Sound files can be stored anywhere on the device, or a connected storage card, although I'd recommend keeping them on the device.
Since this program modifies registry entries, there is always an element of danger, and things could go wrong. Although I've tried to deal with all of the possibilities where problems occur, some configurations may cause problems, you accept responsibility for any damage which occurs, although I will do my best to help you fix the problem.

WOW!!! This is a great idea! One question. I have long wanted the "tick" sound when i type on my PocketCM Keyboard with out the annoying ticks on the screen for general selection of items. Is it possible to apply a silent sound to all general screen taps but still allow the tick sounds when the on screen SIP is being used?
It may be possible, although that would involve changing a different part of the registry, not related to the one I have used. I will look into it for you when I start developing again...

I first made a mortscript to do that (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=2450016&postcount=659), but I wanted it to have the dignity of a stand-alone app (I have nothing against mortscripts though, they're brilliant). Since my experience with developing for windows, and even more so developing for windows mobile, == NULL, I looked (once again) for ways to get all set up and learn very quickly.
After being reminded for the nth time (it's an every-six-months or so process, recursive) that no, you don't infact learn c++ quickly, even less some newish language you've never seen before, I stumbled onto PPL, what I would think of as a script interpreter with a fairly easy to use IDE.
The result of my few hours of fighting with PPL is attached below for the joy of all children and elderly people.
Installation:
Place the contents of the zip in a folder wherever you like on the device, then link buttons or shortcuts at leisure to vasquez.exe.
Settings:
The file setup.exe modifies the few settings for the app.
Actor - which sounds set to use (only default available for now);
Format - hh mm only for now, to be joined by "o'clock", "and a half", "quarter to" and so on;
AM/PM - use am/pm or not where appropriate;
12/24 - use a 12 or 24 hours cycle.
Note that using 24 hours the AM/PM setting is ignored.
Bottom Line:
PPL, while easy to use and learn, has its downs:
1) an app that would have taken a few kbs requires instead more than 2mb, because of having to pack the interpreter together with the code (only to be expected really);
2) it takes a while to run the app (each exe being ~1.2mb) and it feels oddly wrong having to wait a few seconds for such a settings menu to appear (you'll see what I mean if you try).
It is my intention to develop this further, although I'd much prefer to rewrite it "properly" using Cwhateversappropriate or .NET or dunnowhat.
But first I'll have to find someone to tutor me through the setting up stage because I always stop before even starting. (Anyone ? Hih, hih. )
Thanks for bearing with my rambling.

nice little app.
comments:
- maybe you could recode your checkbox' so that when AM/PM is selected, the 24Hr checkbox will automatically be unchecked, and vice versa.
- the wav file's volume are a bit low
using a lang interpretator or managed framework would always have its cost and overheads.
I always prefer to build utility using native Win32 instead of .NET for the same reason, especially if I am interested just to get the job done and need to keep it lean and mean...

What's the deal with the various Visual Thisandthat ? Do they work like this (with all the understandable differences) or are they as lean and mean as any notepad-made C++ ?
great app i use it avery day. Is there any plans to update it? could you plz add the feature to use a diferent wav file for sayin 1hr and 1min, cause I made spanish sounds for your app but when it says One One AM, in spanish should be Una Uno AM, but there is only a file for the 1.
very cool clock...did not know this even excisted. Nice work!
thanks for this,
however the sounds are very quiet so when i get home tonight ill amplify the sounds and see what they sound like.
if they sound good ill uplaod the amplified sounds for you if you dont mind?

I have done some playing and here are three level of sounds:
quiet is just normal if you want to use original sounds
medium is amplified by 400%
Loud is amplified by 800%
anymore and distortion was really noticeable. Just extract the files and replace default sounds with the sounds from the folder you wish.
hi, how to i link the vasquez.exe to buttons? any recommended programs?
Any chance of wma support as these files can be made much smaller, Bug found i get a crackling when time is played i have tested with different sound samples and it's still present still great and i look forward to watching this app grow

Just copy a shortcut to your \Windows\Start Menu\Programs folder and through Settings - System - Keys link it to a hardkey
speaking clock not working
found out what I did wrong!
Thank you very much!
I am a visually impaired user of Windows Mobile, this program is great, no more getting my reading glasses to see the time. I dedicated a button to use this program on my phone. I finished some new voices both male and female.
Here is the download link ----->

It is time to update the really good app a little bit?
I have read some issues here. So about this, my question..
excellent application, exactly what i was looking for
Nice
Plz built it that way,at every hour it speaks automatically....Thank you..
I needed such application because when i ride a bike or something, then i could use my earphone (just push the call button, say the name of the application to launch it....as you say the name to call someone, same thing) to listen to the time without having everytime to take my phone out of the pocket.
It doesn't work....because everytime i click on the .exe, windows asks me 'are you sure you want to run this application?' that's because it's an unknown .exe....sure you know what i'm talking about.
So the thing with the earphone and the vocal command wouldn't work because i would always have to click on 'yes' after that safety warning. How can i remove that warning ?

Disable "not signed" warnings for unsigned apps
try this it's just a couple of reg settings to remove that warning

Just a fairly simple idea that occurred to me, I thaught it would be very useful to have a small application that just exchanged files. For example when copying manila files to windows it would be useful if you could exchange the new file for the old one and then when the mess was made it would be easy to just press swap again and all would be as before.
Select file, select destination, press ok and that would be it, the origional windows file would now be where the new one was. If I'm not being clear enough I mean, the windows file would be "backed up" automatically to the location of the file you are exchanging it with, ready to swap back if necessary. Think about it!!
Well I can't make such an app. Does no-one even have a comment on the idea, I think a lot of people would use this if it existed. Or is there already something that can do what I am asking?

you could use a file sync program, most of the good ones have the ability to connect to virtually anything.
I pay for one called "Super Flexible" it has a portable install, if you are interested i could send it to you with a(my) serial?
PM me if you like the sound

Thanks for your reply. Probably not a good idea to mention serials here but thanks anyway. I will have a read up about that and see if it can do what I was thinking of.
Had a quick google on that and it looks rather complex for what I want. The software I want would be a simple tool that only copied to the windows folder while making a backup of the files it was overwriting at the same time. It would not do anything else since there are so many tools that do everything but this already, like Resco or TC. I think a simple tool like this would be of benefit to the whole community. At the moment to say install a new clock in TF3D I might make a .cab or just copy the file into my windows folder with TC, then if I don't like the new clock, it is not so straight forward to simply uninstall the new clock. If I delete the files or uninstall the .cab my manila will not revert back to my previous clock, but it will revert back to the original clock built into the rom, so I have to make yet another installation of the previous clock. I have had a lot of clocks, some I made myself and some by others (whiskeybro and mbord). Often I am just trying a small change, like a date colour or a clock hand or a slider and with the app I am proposing it would be so easy to just switch back and forth. I also seem to be trying a lot of other stuff like new bluetooth icons or shellres192 dlls or phcanOverbmps, I hope you see what I mean.

but what you want it an on-the-fly file changer that needs to access the root of the device (not the internal storage) so this would have to be achieved through activesync, as this is the only way i have seen the windows dir of the device on my pc.
since this is the case you can do this through windows explorer by changing the view settings to the following:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Put a check in the top box, and remove the check from the bottom box.
then when you plug your phone in, select activesync (you dont need to have a setup as this works if you select "connect without configuring"), then you can browse the windows dir and backup and change what you like.
if this solution is not good i can look into writing something.
How about you look into the code of Diamond Config. It does something VERY similar except it deletes all the manilla files first and then transfers them over. It also has a backup feature. IF you could modify it and make it not delete and just overwrite, then it shoud work. Or PM the creator of Diamond Config.
