I've developed a nifty little tray application that lets you enable/disable and move up/down items on your today page. This saves a lot of time when you're playing around with today screen plug ins, compared to going through the settings pane.
You can get the first beta here: http://oxymoron.se/traytodayitems_beta1.cab

Hi.
This is very good and saves lots of time. I had to put a short cut in the startup folder myself. Apart from that its perfect on my PDA2K.
Thanks,
Ian Watson
@skip: Looks like your TodayPrograms plugin is about what I am looking for, except: From what what i read is that you put all shortcuts in the 'Programs' folder on the plugin. I would like to have only the shortcuts in a specific (best but not neccesary would be a configurable...) folder shown . . .
Could you introduce that into your plugin?
Great that someone is trying it out!
Like I said it is still a beta version, although I am not aware of any bugs per se. I'll definitely make so that it automatically installs in the startup folder. Also, a program icon would not be too shabby.

Edsub, your suggestion is not a bad one at all. I first had an idea to make a toggle for every program whether it would show on the today screen or not.
Now I'm thinking that your idea might be even better, let the user choose a folder from which to get the shortcuts. This would allow for an even more flexible choice of programs. However, this would definitely make it harder to customize for people who would rather not deal with the file system and shortcuts.
I'll look into it.
One question: Is a .EXE installer desirable? I'll definitely make the my programs available as .CABs, but would anyone prefer a .EXE installer for Windows and Active Sync?
Skip
IMO a CAB is better. Just copy to the device & tap . . .
With .exe you allways get the question if its a PC or PPC exe . . . .
Hi.
Is it possible for you to add OPTIONS in the menu to allow you to get to the options screen for that item.
Thanks,
Ian

You should always take care about putting anything in the startup directory, since this modifies the device's behaviour at startup. If there is a problem which requires a reset, the user might not like you messing with startup - I don't.

Disagree again I'm afraid, what about people who don't want to install to the default location but want to put the s/w on a Storage card? Unless you have CABinstaller you can't easily. Always provide both options if you want to keep the users happy.
That's a good idea. I should be able to call up the options screen somehow. I'll see when I find time to work on it.

Hi LeSkip, good start, really like to today tray items program.
With respect to the Today Program yes an EXE installer would be great. I like your original idea to be able to choose which programs to display.
Also if I choose say 15 programs to display it overlaps the programs instead of say placing on a second line or like iLauncher having an Icon to get to the second set. Also making the icon Size configurable would be great.
I have the Icons on my screen, but tapping one does not start the program. Also I have choosen 8 icons to display, the eight Icon is cutoff (it is cutoff about 1/2 cm before the right side of the screen).
Today Programs is definitely far from finished, I just wanted to see there was a user base for this kind of application.
An option to use 16x16 icons instead of the large 32x32 is high on my to-do list. Letting the user show more than the number of programs that actually fits on the screen isn't much use, so I'll just limit the number to whatever width the screen has.
I am working on tapping as a way of launching.
Small arrows that show when there are more programs to scroll to will be added soon.
The right side cut off has to do with the program being launched when a scroll bar was visible. I'll try to solve this problem.

Hi.
I have only installed the Tray Today software. Is the other software with the icons for creating software shortcuts? I use tdLaunch: http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=176
The Tray Today software is really good - even better with an "options" in the menu . But there seems to be quite a few other icon shortcut software for the Today Screen. Is yours going to be any different to others? Like I said, I have not installed yours yet.
Regards,
Ian Watson
The sole purpose of "Today programs" (horrible development name) is easy access to the Programs folder with the D-pad. I was getting annoyed with having to click Start>Programs to access them. I haven't tried any similar products, but there's probably several of them.

Possible new name: Today Switcher... because the natural progression of this tool has got to be to permit people to store multiple Today configurations and switch between them via the tray tool.
It's something I would love to develop - I believe there's one buggy one out there - but I just don't have the hours in the day! So go for it, the world is waiting for it!

I originally didn't intend to go that far with it, but the idea is starting to appeal to me. I'll try to have an updated version ready by next week, but I'm not sure how much I'll be able to complete by then.

Hi,
Great forum, I've had a shufty around a can't find out how to add icons to the section at the bottom of the screen where there is a line and you have the two icons for the wireless manager and orientation.
It'd be good if you could add your own icons to this don't you think? Like TDLaunch but it's already there!
I'm gonna add a moody picture with an daft arrow just in case I've been rambling away!.

Be interesting to see how its done.

Have a look here
HKLM\Services
particularly Power\ShowIcon
etc.
I believe your program needs to register as a service to be allowed into the lower status bar.
bubster mate, are you very new to the pocket pcs?
The row of icons are called the Tray, displayed on the Today screen.
You can use various programs to add your own applications to the Tray.
I recommend PHM Tools, check it out normally here:
http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/PowerToys/
however, the link doesn't seem to work. You're looking for a prog called TrayLaunch.
However, if you're interested, I wrote my own, called VJTrayLaunch.

WM5
Check it out on my website:
http://www.vijay555.com/index.php?Releases:VJTrayLaunch
You will need to be able to make shortcuts; do this using an explorer program like GSFinder+, my personal recommendation.
EDIT: Guys read through the thread. VJTrayLaunch is only for launching one or two apps. Don't use it for 15 etc, read lbendlin's posts.
I will be updating this at some point. It's safe for a couple of icons, but more than that and you'll be limiting resources for other programs.
V
wow, learning a new word every day... "annunciators"
I guess it's back to reading the Boling book...
Vijay, why is your program resident once for each icon? Couldn't you make it re-entrant?
lbendlin: which version of Boling are you reading?
My program is resident for each app because I wanted it that way, absolutely basic and lowest resources possible without any configuration.
Each icon can be unloaded from its menu subject to user's choice.
I don't actually use the tray at all, preferring to entirely remove it from my today screen:
However, VJBigPhone needed a tray icon, so I had to learn the code, and this was merely a spinoff from that exercise. Someone had asked if there was a fair alternative to PHM's app, which is what I would use if I used the tray. I didn't know of one at the time, but since I could write the code, I did, just in case it came in handy...
What are VJTrayLaunch's overheads like? I've never used it in practise, so have no real experience of it, and haven't measured it...
V
reading the Third Edition.
I have replaced my cLaunch today plugin with a number of TrayLaunch shortcuts. Much better use of real estate. I'll watch the performance impact.
Does WM5 still have the 32 process limit?
lbendlin: I'm really not sure, I've not looked into it the task limit.
re Boling, yep me too. I'm learning everything I know from there and a huge Windows reference book, and C++ for dummies I'm only on Chapter 5, so obviously you'll see the theme of my apps change as I progress!
Re cLaunch, if you're using many shortcuts, or even a few large ones like me
a tabbed icon launcher is useful for thumb friendly size. My cLaunch setup is configured to give 4 banks of icons (1: quick calls, 2: apps A, 3: apps B, 4: phone profiles and volume control), tabbed with the arrows on the left.
So all is easy to navigate with the thumb (I've actually moved over to my unreleased plugin VJEphemeris that replaces several other plugins, but it works on the same principle).
The tray is very small, and good for some apps, depending on use really; I'm always looking for a better thumb friendly Today screen. Hence tabs and claunch, tray is too small for my use. Post a screenshot so we can get an idea!
On WM5 I've already written code to remove the tray from WM5 and shrink the soft buttons:
which I will provide as an option in VJToggleTodayWM5.
However, I will also be working on an expansion of my program HideStart to allow me to relocate the tray to somewhere more useful for me on WM5 (this is WM2003 screenshot):
I think the tray is very useful, but it's a crime it's not always visible. But there's just no space on QVGA. So I made it optionally visible anywhere, toggled with the start bar.
I've just had a cool thought: tabbed tray icons! I've not seen those before, and they could be quite feasible. Might look into it. What do you think?

I like the idea. I was planning on investing on a launcher, but after reading your post, I'd rather wait for you to develop this. Plus I'd rather pay for this rather than a launcher. EXCELLENT idea!
I'm such a glutton for punishment coming up with these ideas!
cktlcmd: I still highly recommend cLaunch. I had some good exchanges with its author and the code is mesmerisingly cool from a geeks point of view! Way over my head, that guy's a genius.
I just had a thought about how tabbed tray icons might be doable. I'll try to look into it, but I'm afraid it won't be too soon, unless I really find myself possessed by a eureka moment and can't stop myself (they happen surprisingly often!)

I am sad to report that I have switched back to cLaunch. The 32 process limit still seems to stand, and my 6 TaskLaunch instances created all kinds of funny situations where other programs would be closed for no apparent reason. So, Vijay, time for a re-entrant version? ;-)
lbendlin: I'm really sorry, I didn't understand why you were asking about the 32 task limit, but of course now I understand!
I believe WM5 is also limited to the 32 tasks as before, and this is "addressed" by using services! That's not a solution. for others, read this
You've made a good observation. I clearly recommend PHM tray launcher myself (I never use the tray, I use smallmenu personally) but this was made just for launching one or two distinct tasks. I'll amend the first post to reflect this info.
I'm giving thought to how to do tabbed and multi icons. I didn't address this previously because it wasn't what I wanted, but I can see the value of it with some of my other hacks. It probably won't happen too soon, I'm developing another couple of larger projects before I can come back to this, but I will work on it. Hopefully someone else can do it first!

My phone company, 3, have just released these finally in Oz and am heading out to get one tomorrow.
Now is the best time to ask everyone what are their favourite programs they have installed on the Trinity? Saves me searching around forever....
I need one that closes all programs totally (so they dont continue to run in the background), switches what hard buttons do (unless you can do that automatically), plus whatever else people think i need......
I thought this would be a good thread for all newbies and others who want to know what are the best ways to pimp up their Trinity.
thanks

You can stop all running programs from Start button->Settings->System->Memory.
Also the new ROM i got has an option somewhere with the ability to change the behaviour on the closebutton.. It says HTC menu util or something similar.
Get magicbutton (for the task closing), its free and works fine....

It's under START->Settings->System->Task Manager.
It has 2 options;
1) End programs by tapping X
2) End programs by taping and holding X
MagicButton sucks pretty hard, the last version has some issues with the telephone application (it doesnt close it).
The most kick ass application you'll ever get for your trin is this one:
Spb Mobile Shell: This a pretty good application that enhance your today screen with tabbed menus and give you alot of nice features like enhanced menus, task manager and alot of other cool features.

Pocket Weather (SBSH)
Today Agenda
Device Lock
Pocket Rar
TomTom Navigator 6
Skype
iMov Messenger

thanks for that. what are the programs down the bottom where you can have all the shortcuts on the today page? The one with the tabs for Big,Apps, Car,etc plus the little icons below that....... same program?
That is my only shortfall of this beautiful phone- the lack of shortcuts i can program.
Matterhorn, it looks like you would benefit in battery time and also speed, by using the option to properly close your apps rather than minimise them when pressing the X button. I am judging this by all the apps that appear to be open in the bottom of your today screen.

The apps at the bottom of the screen are all just shortcuts, they aren't running. The program iLauncher allows you to make shortcuts at the bottom of the today screen. These are the apps that I use very often and don't want look for them. The other groups of shortcuts "Big", "Apps" etc. are also part of iLauncher and I make the icons big so I can use my fingers to launch the apps. I have iLauncher programmed to close some apps with the X while other programs are not allowed to be closed with the X, such as Messaging, Mortplayer, IE etc. I use the "close all" option when I really want a clean system. Believe me, I don't let apps run unless I need them running .
how do you make it so the ilauncher bar is all the way down the bottom of the screen? mine sits about halfway up....

Go to start>settings>today>items select program shown and select move up or down!

It is a bit tricky because when you have items in your calendar plug-in it moves the whole today screen up and down. That is why I use TodayAgenda instead, it is an app that allows you to set the length of your Task and Calendar list. This way you only scroll within TodayAgenda and not the whole screen. This makes it possible to make the iLauncher stay at the bottom. You just have to set iLauncher to manual height and experiment until you get the proper height for your today screen.
I hope that helps
I've made a simple program to modify the registry entries concerning the sounds made on certain events inside the Windows Mobile operating system, such as the sound played when an error occurs, or when you open a program.
To enable the new events on your device, run the program, then reboot. Once rebooted, open it again to configure the new sound events. Sound files can be stored anywhere on the device, or a connected storage card, although I'd recommend keeping them on the device.
Since this program modifies registry entries, there is always an element of danger, and things could go wrong. Although I've tried to deal with all of the possibilities where problems occur, some configurations may cause problems, you accept responsibility for any damage which occurs, although I will do my best to help you fix the problem.

Note: Some of the menu items have not been used at this time, and will not do anything when you click on them...
WOW!!! This is a great idea! One question. I have long wanted the "tick" sound when i type on my PocketCM Keyboard with out the annoying ticks on the screen for general selection of items. Is it possible to apply a silent sound to all general screen taps but still allow the tick sounds when the on screen SIP is being used?
It may be possible, although that would involve changing a different part of the registry, not related to the one I have used. I will look into it for you when I start developing again...
Works great thank you very much!

1. Yes, it's a black "B" on a transparent background, so it'll not show there i'm afraid...

Ironically, I never heard of this program until yesterday and downloaded the previous version yesterday. It seemed call but it kept going off every 3 minutes. I said dismiss but it just kept going off so I uninstalled it. But it keeps going off, even though it's uninstalled. Thankfully it stopped for now, but I think it may happen again. How can it keep going if I uninstalled it?
Nice but I don't like the tray item. When launching the app for the second time it won't show up, you have to use the tray item. I use Throttle Launcher so the tray is hidden, which makes the app quite unusable.
SpoonAlarm 2.0
I think there are some issues with Diamond, a friend of mine already reported it's not working very well for him too.
I will check it out and try to fix the problem.
Can you explain the tray icon problem please?
Thanks!
Gil.

Thanks for your feedback,
I thought people will actually like the tray icon...
Any suggestions how I can enable easy access to it without the tray?

Have a way to link it to the taskbar clock, or the user can create a shortcut in whatever launcher they use.
Thanks.
So I think what I will do is to give it as optional configuration.
Will update you as soon as it is fixed.
Gil.
I too hadn't heard about your program until today - and it seems great, except for the tray icon...
There are many places you can allow the user to place the icon:
Tray
Control Panel
Start Menu Panel (main)
Start Menu -> Programs
If you could create an option to allow the user to create a quick access shortcut in one or more of those locations, then I think you'll probably make everyone's day.
Other than that, the application looks much nicer and more powerful than the default WM clock/alarm utility. Great job!
Looks good , like to see the update with a short cut to. Thanks for your hard work .

Possible to set multiple alarms ?
Not working
I was looking forward to this program but it doesn't work for me.
a- I can't use the tray icon. I NEVER look at the today screen.
b- I can't select an MP3. It doesn't show any.
I need to be able to run it from a shortcut.
I am hoping it will work soon. I'll even donate $10 if it works.
Thanks,
Jeannette

Currently the default one does and any alternate alarm program I get must at bare minimum, have teh same features as the default alarm, plus of course the addition creature features. So multi alarm would have to be there in order for me to use it.
I am happy with the default alarm to be honest. My ONLY grief is the lack of MP3 support for setting the alarm sounds. The SpoonAlarm looks good but if teh curently functionality is missing at all then it does me no good and I will stick with the default alarm. I just have to convert MP3 sounds to wave and make sure they are in the windows folder, a pain but it works.
Is there a way SpoonAlarm can map to the alarm icon (next to the clock) in HTCHome? Looks like a good basic alarm app though. A lot of these alarm apps have horrible looking UI's with non touch friendly interfaces.
Manilla2d is really impressive shell of course, but there's no some really needed functions, that we can use in basic today shell. I was really disappointed in absence of two things in it: the first one is interface-styled locker/unlocker and the second one is an ability to use basic today plugins. Of course, we've got another software solutions to fix it, but their's problem is that they don't fit to manilla's interface conception. I've tried to solve this problems, and now i'd like to share my results. Dont kick me pls=))
Eferything posted below was made for using with this theme (with background from this one) with this clock pack. You can repaint it as you wish, consider this all an exampe or an idea=))
1. S2U2. S2U2 imho is the best solution for lock/unlock device. You can find it here. (My version is 0.86) We can use it as is, but iphone-like slider don't looks native to manilla2d. To make it looks more suitable i'd to fully repaint a slider, and this is what i got at the end.

Moving part is an icon of a padlock. When moving it looks strange of course, but the only another variant i got was without unlock animation at all. So this one better)) In archive you can find gfx folder from s2u2 (to install delete your current one, there's nedded some files not to be) and lang.ini file with fixed time format string (HH:mm instead of H:mm). This skin as it is is not suitable fot those who uses slide 2 answer opion, because i didn't paint it))
2. Today plugins. The main trouble of manilla2d as i guess is that there's no a widget to install another today plugins. To solve this problem i needed the following soft:
SecondToday - virtual today-like screen.
HomeScreen PlusPlus - today plugin that allows free positioning of elements,
MortScript - script language for pda.
spacer and spacer2 (attached) - two copies of today plugin what allows to make spacers between another plugins.
So what i've done:
1. Install this all;
2. Make a screenshot of manilla to set it to background of secondToday.
3. Run SecondToday and set spacer as a first plugin. The only way to configure spacers on SecondToday i found is edit the registry. So go to HKCU//software/pocketMax/Spacer and set height of it to 40 (maybe you like another height above your first plugin)
4. Connect in SecondToday below spacer plugins you need to be shown. Set spacer2 below them. Do nothing in tegistry for a while.
5. The most interesting. After the spacer2 set HomeScreenPlusPlus. Pot into its directory two setting sets from archive. The first one is to make setup easier, the second is working one. Open properties of HomeScreenPlusPlus -> advanced and select where sttoday_temp xml.
6. After that you need to change height of spacer2 to put tapzones on the backgoung images like it on the screen. This parameter is in HKCU//software/pocketMax/Spacer2. Don't forget to shut up second today after every try to see changes))
7. Put 5 scripts from archive into /Program Files/MortScript/scripts (or somewhere you want, but change paths in HomeScreenPlusPlus XMLs).
8. Try it. Of corse, sliding won't work, but tapping to zones will open vidget painted on background)))
9. Change sttoday_temp to sttoday it settings of HomeScreenPlusPlus.
10. Put a shortcut of SecondToday to programs widget of manilla.
11. Voila! You got something like below (Remember that you can't slide in this window)
I know it's not the best solution, but i don't want to change functionality to beauty)) This variant is a compromise i think)) In archive you can find S2U2 skin, MortScript scripts, HomeScreen++ themes and two spacers. Good luck in installation=))
ps. sorry my english))
Nice work!
Can you make a VGA version of your S2U2 theme?
another important feature about manilla 2d is NO notifications button or screen..u have to tap the taskbar to see them..
Wow

Jiles.....this is simply sweet!
Now I can have my own plugins on M2..love it
Give me a minute I need to finish configuration and I'll be back. I've a small request. I assigned second today to FtouchSL so i just need to swipe the bottom screen fast to open it. So I would like you to help me change motorscript files to point to specific tabs.
Jiles how can I change motorscripts files to assign the last icon to Programs, next one to Settings then the rest in order to Photos, maps and Internet?
2-Arturo- i'm in suspence about MortScript i'll try of course
2johanromijn thanks! about VGA sorry i'm afraid i have no device to try on.
ADD 2-Arturo- by series of taps only i'm afraid. As i remember, MortScript cannot slide, only tap (command MouseClick(x, y))
Thanks Jiles
Add2 about the swipes I was talking about this program http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=338143
I don't know if you heard about it but you can assign any aplication to "swipes" left, right, up, down etc. So I was saying that I assigned secondtoday to right swipe it's much more convenient because I don't have to access "Programs" tab to activate secondtoday. I just need to swipe somwhere on the screen from left to right to activate it. In other words you can open it from main screen of Manilla or from contacts screen etc. Try it out
Oh and thanks again for trying to change the motoscripts files. I appreciate it
Ok it took me a while but this is how my secondtoday looks like
http://img356.imageshack.us/my.php?image=screen001ys1.png
2-Arturo- Hmmm.. I on the contrary try to disable FTouchFlo on the today screen, cause it makes its native slide lagging The best solution would be to place secondToday on not-working manilla widget "operator", but i hardly can guess how to do it

Yes that would be lovely...well maybe in future someone will figure it out...finger crossed
Really Amazing! I am impressed. Thanks for sharing the info and the needed files.
