Brins0net_EventSounds - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I've made a simple program to modify the registry entries concerning the sounds made on certain events inside the Windows Mobile operating system, such as the sound played when an error occurs, or when you open a program.
To enable the new events on your device, run the program, then reboot. Once rebooted, open it again to configure the new sound events. Sound files can be stored anywhere on the device, or a connected storage card, although I'd recommend keeping them on the device.
Since this program modifies registry entries, there is always an element of danger, and things could go wrong. Although I've tried to deal with all of the possibilities where problems occur, some configurations may cause problems, you accept responsibility for any damage which occurs, although I will do my best to help you fix the problem.

Requirements:
.NET Compact Framework v3.5
Windows Mobile device (should work with WM2003 and up, I've tested with WM6.1)
A collection of "wav" files
Please feel free to comment on my work, I hope it'll prove useful for someone. I've not yet come across any other PDA based application to do what this one does, so i'm hoping it may stirr up some interest.
Note: Some of the menu items have not been used at this time, and will not do anything when you click on them...

WOW!!! This is a great idea! One question. I have long wanted the "tick" sound when i type on my PocketCM Keyboard with out the annoying ticks on the screen for general selection of items. Is it possible to apply a silent sound to all general screen taps but still allow the tick sounds when the on screen SIP is being used?

It may be possible, although that would involve changing a different part of the registry, not related to the one I have used. I will look into it for you when I start developing again...

Works great thank you very much!
1. I have no program icon though (not a big deal) my menu background is solid black so all i see is a black square. Is your program icon tranparent or black or something?
2. Also, the tools soft-key doesn't do anything, what is it supposed to do?
3. Also, mention that .net CF is required (I didn't have it)
Thanks again.

Good idea . Goin to try later..can u post some sounds please. Cant find any good 1s.

Do you have Windows Vista? Look in your \Windows\Media\ Folder, I got all the sounds I used from there, they're better sounding than what comes with Windows Mobile by default.

1. Yes, it's a black "B" on a transparent background, so it'll not show there i'm afraid...
2. I've mentioned in the post at the top, that not all of the soft keys do things currently, and will most likely be used in later versions.
3. I have already mentioned above that the .net compact framework 3.5 is required for it to work, although this should be included as part of WM6.1... Correct me if I'm wrong though please...
Glad you like it though, are the any changes you can suggest, possibly better descriptions for the events? Some of them don't appear to be used on all devices, I've tried to work out what they do, but making an event fire, when you don't know what causes it, is not easy

If you look on the downloads section of my site (http://brins0.net/) there is a package of the Windows Vista sound effects that come as one of the ultimate extras which I have extracted from my installation.

Thanks! Ignore 2 and 3, I totally missed that bottom paragraph under the images! My fault
As for the icon, I just used the SK Shortcut manager to create a link and assign a different icon

NEW: Tray Today Items

I've developed a nifty little tray application that lets you enable/disable and move up/down items on your today page. This saves a lot of time when you're playing around with today screen plug ins, compared to going through the settings pane.
You can get the first beta here: http://oxymoron.se/traytodayitems_beta1.cab

Hi.
This is very good and saves lots of time. I had to put a short cut in the startup folder myself. Apart from that its perfect on my PDA2K.
Thanks,
Ian Watson
@skip: Looks like your TodayPrograms plugin is about what I am looking for, except: From what what i read is that you put all shortcuts in the 'Programs' folder on the plugin. I would like to have only the shortcuts in a specific (best but not neccesary would be a configurable...) folder shown . . .
Could you introduce that into your plugin?
Great that someone is trying it out!
Like I said it is still a beta version, although I am not aware of any bugs per se. I'll definitely make so that it automatically installs in the startup folder. Also, a program icon would not be too shabby.
Skip
Edsub, your suggestion is not a bad one at all. I first had an idea to make a toggle for every program whether it would show on the today screen or not.
Now I'm thinking that your idea might be even better, let the user choose a folder from which to get the shortcuts. This would allow for an even more flexible choice of programs. However, this would definitely make it harder to customize for people who would rather not deal with the file system and shortcuts.
I'll look into it.
One question: Is a .EXE installer desirable? I'll definitely make the my programs available as .CABs, but would anyone prefer a .EXE installer for Windows and Active Sync?
Skip
IMO a CAB is better. Just copy to the device & tap . . .
With .exe you allways get the question if its a PC or PPC exe . . . .
Hi.
Is it possible for you to add OPTIONS in the menu to allow you to get to the options screen for that item.
Thanks,
Ian

You should always take care about putting anything in the startup directory, since this modifies the device's behaviour at startup. If there is a problem which requires a reset, the user might not like you messing with startup - I don't.

Disagree again I'm afraid, what about people who don't want to install to the default location but want to put the s/w on a Storage card? Unless you have CABinstaller you can't easily. Always provide both options if you want to keep the users happy.
That's a good idea. I should be able to call up the options screen somehow. I'll see when I find time to work on it.

Hi LeSkip, good start, really like to today tray items program.
With respect to the Today Program yes an EXE installer would be great. I like your original idea to be able to choose which programs to display.
Also if I choose say 15 programs to display it overlaps the programs instead of say placing on a second line or like iLauncher having an Icon to get to the second set. Also making the icon Size configurable would be great.
I have the Icons on my screen, but tapping one does not start the program. Also I have choosen 8 icons to display, the eight Icon is cutoff (it is cutoff about 1/2 cm before the right side of the screen).
Today Programs is definitely far from finished, I just wanted to see there was a user base for this kind of application.
An option to use 16x16 icons instead of the large 32x32 is high on my to-do list. Letting the user show more than the number of programs that actually fits on the screen isn't much use, so I'll just limit the number to whatever width the screen has.
I am working on tapping as a way of launching.
Small arrows that show when there are more programs to scroll to will be added soon.
The right side cut off has to do with the program being launched when a scroll bar was visible. I'll try to solve this problem.

Hi.
I have only installed the Tray Today software. Is the other software with the icons for creating software shortcuts? I use tdLaunch: http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=176
The Tray Today software is really good - even better with an "options" in the menu . But there seems to be quite a few other icon shortcut software for the Today Screen. Is yours going to be any different to others? Like I said, I have not installed yours yet.
Regards,
Ian Watson
The sole purpose of "Today programs" (horrible development name) is easy access to the Programs folder with the D-pad. I was getting annoyed with having to click Start>Programs to access them. I haven't tried any similar products, but there's probably several of them.
Skip
Possible new name: Today Switcher... because the natural progression of this tool has got to be to permit people to store multiple Today configurations and switch between them via the tray tool.
It's something I would love to develop - I believe there's one buggy one out there - but I just don't have the hours in the day! So go for it, the world is waiting for it!

Would people be interested in a simple program for changing registry settings? As an example some screen prints.

can't think of any other options but just having those on one screen would be excellent and save having to do them all through the registry (which I hate doing!!)
Good Work!
Suggestion:
Different GPRS/EDGE Icon?
HKLM\Drivers\BuiltIn\RIL\
EnableDifferGprsEdgeIcon from 0 to 1
Hide SIM contacts?
HKCU\ControlPanel\Phone
new DWORD value named "ShowSim" and set it to 0
Add the GPS Icon in control Panel?
Cheers,

Hey this is a great Idea... instead of having to reapply loads of fixes after a reinstall this saves an enourmous amount of time
Nice going !
There is a (commercial) program that does this trick; Tweaks2k2. http://www.tweaks2k2.com/portal/filemgmt/
You can download a trial version, good for three runs.
Is this prog ready for use?
Do you want a tester for it? would love to try this one.
Tweak2K2 versus HTC Wizard Tweak
I know the Tweak2K2 program, I even have a license for that. But as far as I now this handy utility has no specific support for the HTC Wizard. For instance the 802.11G tweak will probbly not available in Tweak2K2.
At this moment I'm working on the "Registry Wizard". The first steps are ready. On loading the program the several registry settings are read and the checkboxes are adjusted to show the current configuration. The second step will be to allow the user to change the setting by adjusting the checkbox. Clicking on the "Apply" button will pop up a messagebox asking to confirm a soft reset in order to activate the new registry settings.
Perhaps I can even build in a routine to check if the device is actually a HTC Wizard in order to prevent the program by mistake adjust registry settings on a non HTC Wizard.
For people interested in the program. The program is written with the aid of Microsoft Visual Studio 2005 (VB) and the OpennetCF addin.
Suggestions for other HTC Wizard tweaks are welcome. Bij the way the GPRS allways on setting is a little more difficult as the registry shows specific provider information (in my case T-Mobile). So the GPRS key setting might be a little more difficult.
Nico
is this tool compatible with wm2003 / magician?
this would be great to have also:
** sms notification always on **
Hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\inbox\settings\SMSDeliveryNotify = Dword:00000001 -> 0=off
Great prog,
Let us know if you want testers
This program is in it's very early stage. In fact I just started this morning creating the program in Visual Studio 2005. I expect the coming week to post a very early beta version. And to be clear, everyone can be a beta tester or user. Just be a little patience because I don't want to mess up everybodies registry.
Unfortunally I have no knowledge of the other HTC devices so I'm not sure if that can be supported.
Kind regards,
Nico

seems like quite useful tool! i would also suggest to include little explanations for each tweak, i mean what exactly each tweak does.
other reghacks:
- enable/disable switching cleartype off while changing to landscape mode
- ability to modify softkeys functions on today screen
btw, i don't know why there are two separate topics regarding this? :-o
Request for device information
Please be so kind to post information reagrding the Device Information. My MDA Vario indentifies itself as a WIZA200 in:
Settings - Device Information - Identity - Model No.
Is this the same setting for all HTC Wizard devices? (Qtek, I-Jam etc.)

You know what be ultimately stupendously great - even if difficult to implement?
Read the registry key names, descriptions, and options from an XML.
This way your app is -never- restricted to what you code in it. If somebody finds a new tweak, add it to the XML, and it'll automatically show up in your app.
As I said.. implementing this would probably be difficult - but it would certainly be a killer 'user-friendly' registry tweak app.

Same result for my O2 Xda Mini S

I second that. Each tweak could have its own XML element. This way the changes of tweaks can actually be examined. New tweaks can be added, existing tweaks can be updated. People can examine what is done to their device in case they are a little bit weary - at least I would be.
The user interface would have to use a list/table instead of individual check boxes.
Since you are already working with .NET parsing the XML is no biggie.
PS: i-mate K-JAM device identification string - Model No = WIZA200
Tweak Wizard
Reading settings from XML is not so difficult. Problem lies more in the fact how to show this on screen. For example, if the XML entries are over ten how to handle a new tab page etc. I think users want to have control (see on screen) which enties are involved.
But overall, a great idea.
Nico
yeah, the display bit is the bit that'd be difficult, really
Obviously there's hundreds of tweaks out there, and I'm not sure how feasible it is to show hundreds of form lines in a dialog. Not sure about tabs, though - why not make the form page scrollable?
Tabs could still be used for 'grouping' tweaks, of course, so that top level XML elements essentially describe the group, and tab label, and elements within that are the actual tweaks.
That sort of thing needs thought
Anyway, was just throwing it out there because it seems there's so many little CAB files with registry tweaks, and so many apps out there that tweak 2-5 things, and then a few apps that 'do them all', but really only do those that the developer decided to include - and good luck waiting for updates. Something like an app that parses a text/XML app for these things would, quite basically, do away with all that silliness.
( CAB files, I suspect, would still be popular as it wouldn't require installing an application / modifying a text/XML )
Edit: Oh yeah... Qtek9100EN (unlocked, dutch-bought): WIZA200.
XML files
OK, might be an idea to make just 1 screen and make it scrollable. When the first release is ready I might have a look at importing XML files to do the trick.
Nico
This topic is posted double.. ..maybe we should continue here and close the other one?
Yes, sure. But for some strange reason I can't remove the other thread.
Please advise.

Anyone know a Today Plug in that can do this?

I was wondering if there is a today plug in that will allow me to write or type my own message and show up on my today screen permantly (and allows me to change it through settings)?
Doesnt thebuild in tasks plugin work for you?? Or you want a more "post-it" notes kinda feel??
I just want like one line on my today screen to write whatever I want....for example......like the owner informations with phone number is 2 lines.....I want to disable that and write my own information in one line.....doesn't have to be owner info....just anything I want.....it's kinda hard to explain.....and I want to to be able to use chinese characters to write too.....

hey vijay, very interesting the way you made it look so small and efficient! mind sharing it? :wink: interesting little application; although i don't use it as much it's good as a quick scratch pad for all occasions...
Someone just emailed me about the skin.
I've found a copy on my ftp - I haven't used the plugin for a while, because I'm still migrating my setup to WM5 and deciding on new plugins.
But hopefully this is the skin shown:
http://www.vijay555.com/vj/!tools/notestodayskin/notestoday_skin_new.zip
I modified the skin to take almost no room, but be stylus selectable, but particularly selectable with the dpad. I can't remember if I had to edit the registry, but basically you can switch minimised and maximised mode by scrolling down the today screen with the dpad and clicking enter. It'll shrink/expand accordingly
V
Hi Vijay,
I Guess this is off topic. But on one of the screenshots your have an extra blue bar underneath the start button. With two arrow vertical up anddown at the start and sms, phone, and bluetooth etc. in it. I also saw some sort of profiles program with the same arrows in a later screenshot. with seems like profiles to me.
Are those programs the same and if yes, which program is it? I'm tried several programs Pocket Zen phone and WM Profiles. But wasn't happy because the vibrate function didn't work properly on my wizard.
Let me know, thanks.
Cheers
Shah
Shah, the blue bar near the top in my 18 August 2005 screenshots is an early version of my PhoneAlarm skin. This was refined into the one you can see in my 5 April 2006 screenshot, at the top of the screen (being used via my VJToggleToday program).
This is used to select profiles (where the normal "Vibrate" icon is at the top of the screen, clicking this brings a drop down menu with my profiles, Work, Home, Silent, FlightMode)
PhoneAlarm is excellent, generally. Profiles are a very basic feature on any phone, and it's mindboggling that it's not a standard feature, but I like PhoneAlarm, and Bruce, the author (you can also see my slightly hacked version of AlarmToday as well in the screenshots).
My 5 April 2006 screenshot also shows claunch at the bottom (apologies for the stupid icons, I lost some icons when I changed phones), being used to change PhoneAlarm profiles with my thumb. So I can make calls/send SMS using VJPhoneTools, change profiles (PhoneAlarm), and launch selected apps all from the same plugin.
V
Vijay, do you not find PhoneAlarm is resource-heavy?
Also, is that skin on your home page? (I've had a look and can't see it)

Hi Guys,
First: THANKS YOU vijay555 for giving me the skin files! (I'll mail you later with my findings, regarding VGA and landscape use)

Thanks in advance.
Cheers!
Puzom:
I may have the skins at home. Frankly, it's easy to write your own. The standard skins are nothing exciting!
Webreaper:
My phonealarm skin is towards the end of the first post here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27331&highlight=vjtoggletoday
I've used PhoneAlarm for pretty much my whole year on XDA devs, and never found it to be a problem on resources. There are simpler ways of doing what it does, but it's useful, and gives me easy control of profiles etc. Bruce is filling it up with stuff I can't imagine needing, like cell based profiles etc, but I'm happy with the basics - notifications, mail count, profiles etc.
PhoneAlarm or a similar app is essential IMHO for effective use of the phone.
I've had trouble with AlarmToday since upgrading to WM5, but the old WM2003 version was flawless and very useful too.
V
Thanks Vijay. Your skin looks the simplest and neatest I've seen.
I really liked the idea of the cell-based profiles, in particular for things like enabling wifi for when I'm at home, but disabling it when I'm at work. Unfortunately, my house and office are both on the same cell.

I started the developement of a WM WaitCursor replacement. Since the default WM graphic module (gwes.exe for WM5 and shellres.96.dll for WM6) doesn't support transparent images for the WaitCursor, I'd like to add this feature to our devices.
The idea is quite simple:
- Remove the WaitCursor Resources from that modules
- Write an application that catch the WaitCursor event (if it exists) and shows an user defined one.
I already wrote a initial application that shows a cursor only when executed and it works quite good. It is written in Native C++ that means more efficency and less memory usage.
The application runs in background and has no window so it doesn't show any "close" button and no soft-keys.
The images (PNG with alpha transparence!!!) are loaded from a directory and drawed in the screen (the IImagingFactory interface is no more used because it's too slow).
Here are some screenshots...

Help wanted
Anyway I have 2 major problems:
If there is another window opened and I scroll that window, the already drawed pictures scroll, too.
The pictures are painted over the precedent ones, so if there is a transparent picture, the back one is still present. (To avoid that problem I tried to capture the portion of the screen and paint it just before every picture with BitBlt, but it introduces a little flicker problem)
If someone is experienced with the GDI and can suggest me a way to solve that problem or a better way to draw that pictures I'll appreciate it very much.
And do you know which event is thrown when the WaitCursor is showed? So i can catch it.
thank you very much for every help you give me.
Marshall
I attached a video in the first post showing the potential of this application.
Any suggestion will be appreciated.

WOW! this is very big! i would like to see this happen.. though i don't have any programming skills.. i'll support this all the way..
I know this is offtopic, but how did you record the video on WM ?

I just wanna point out that your first problem might not be a problem at all... Can you scroll when the current / official wait icon is shown ? i think not, since that is why it is shown, to let you know there's nothing you can do but wait... I'm not sure, but my guess is that nothing can happen under your cursor once you show it when it's supposed to be shown.
About the second problem, i have no idea...
wow i like what i see. cannot help with "flicker" though...video and info explains why mac wait cursor is not possible now ....

Good point! Thank you RPG0. Maybe it could be a problem if you, for example delete a file. The WaitCursor appears (it can happen in the \windows dir) and the file explorer remove that line and makes the window scroll because now one file is missing. I'm not sure but maybe this situation could introduce that error.
BTW, at the moment it is not so important. Thank you again.

Actually it could be possible in some way. If I capture the screen and draw it before every frame, the "overlapping" problem will not occur. But, like I saied, it will introduce the flicker issue. I believe that there is a way to do it with no flickering but I'm still looking for it.

...this guy is so smart...can´t wait to see it´s first stable release...keep up this cool work.
...btw...when you managed the waitcursor to get transparency, this should also work for the pop-up windows eg for new sms coming in????...wow imagine the posibilities...

The projects is going on, a bit slowly since I'm very busy and I have some issues with the new version.
I finally eliminated the flicker problem replacing the IImage functions with the better bitblt but I'm still getting some problems with the AlphaBlend function to draw the pictures transparently.
BTW, like you said, it can bring lot of possibilities!

I have the xda neo with gullums prophet VIII. I copied at first touch wait cursor to programs folder and tried to install. After installation it makes a softreset, but the old waitcursor is on screen, not the new installed. I tried it again with vista cursor...the same. What can i do?
Me Too!
I'm also getting the same issue. I use LSW's Black WM6 OS.
This questions should be posted at the Marshall WaitCursor Skin thread. This is the Developement thread of the "Transparent" WaitCursor.
However, the skins you installed are for WM5. You have to install a WM6 version. At the moment only the Touch WaitCursor Skin is available for WM6 but all the others are coming soon.
You'll find it at the bottom of the languages list for the Touch WaitCursor Skin at the download page.

Yes I know! I think that the developer will not give me suggestions . However, if I have big problems that I can't solve by myself, I'll try asking him.

Good news!
I finally was able to show the animation with no flickering. This "little" step will make it possible to use any kind of transparent pictures (even MAC and Linux Bouncing cursors). Ther'll be no overlapping between two different frames in total smoothness.
The next step will be capturing the moment in which the OS shows the default WaitCursor in order to show mine. I sadly discovered that there is no event thrown by the system in that situation, so I'll have to look for another way. I read somewhere that it can be done with the WM Cursor APIs but it seems to not work.
If you know a way to let the application know when the OS shows (and hides) the default WaitCursor, please tell me.
Any other help will be also appreciated.

any update Marshall07?

(14/08/2008) Scroll Launcher 0.05 - BugFix!

Scroll Launcher is a Diamond styled Launcher for WM Devices.
Scroll Launcher looks inside the windows start menu folder for all files, and then adds them to a modified KListControl from here
Requirements:
.NET CF 2.0
WM2003 and above Pocket PC device. (I haven't worked out where the Smartphone version stores its startmenu. As soon as I do, I'll release a new version).
QVGA or VGA device
2MB of RAM (may use more on VGA)
Screen shots:
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
Usage:
Install the cab to your device. Execute the link called "Scroll Launcher" in Programs, and then scroll till you find the program you want!
Notes:
No icons are added yet.
A settings program is included!
EOA (ExitOnAction) sets whether the application should close when you hit a link.
The "Path" option allows changing of the path. If you have a non WWE ROM, please set this prior to use!
You must restart Scroll Launcher to apply changes.
Thanks to dosfan and gingercat for the original KListControl.
Thanks to kidnamedAlbert for the icon!
The sourcecode for my modified KListControl is also attached for those who are interested.
this looks great.
just wish we could a better looking background to go with it

Currently it's a single colour layer... I might try and implement some form of bitmap backround, but that'll eat memory...
well at least a black background color. white is too bright and makes my head hurt.
still i will use it

Have a present! I've just swapped around the black and white... Now the background is black, and the text is white!
I'm gonna release a version with the ability to configure that tomorrow!

thank you!
this is great.
now im going to add a program icon to it
i have edited the black scroll launcher and added a program icon
just replace the .exe with the one in the program files/scroll launcher folder
the idea look similar to Schaps interface for hes upcoming rom nice work
looks interesting! when i installed it and run the launcher, it does not find any of my programs. the only one that shows up is the launcher in the list.
i installed on my device and i tried it on my storage card same effect. only the launcher shows up in the program list. do i need to install anything else? i only installed the black launcher attached in post number 5.
thank you mister moderator l3v5y
Nice work l3v5y!
Just great
In black is very, very, very nice.
Just jumpse to me that it is missing 2 thing.... the icons, and not to hide the top bar.
Keep up the good work, for you and dosfan.

Does your ROM have any localisation? It may not work with differently named start menus. Also, are the files in "\\Windows\\Start Menu\\Programs" *.lnk files?

I'm adding some customization to it (via the registry!) so I can add that as an option.
The icons are coming, I just need to work out how best to implement it.
New version with some customisation out now!

l3v5y, I just tried your launcher (actually referred from the finger friendly thread) and I like it a lot, it can easily compensate what pointui is missing, which is only 7 items allowed.
I don't know if you could add these:
1) Groups of the shortcuts. I have way too many shortcuts currently grouped into folders right now (for pointui access). However if your launcher supports layers, such as if I double tap office then I would be able to select word mobile, excel mobile etc that would make it a little cleaner look.
2) Index scroll, a vertical scroll bar on either the left side or right side when scrolling the corresponding first letter comes up, like what pcm contacts, icontact and random access has. It maybe too pointui-ly but certainly increases the usability of your launcher.
Just my 2 cents. Keep up the good work!

Good ideas, but they may take some time...
Currently the items are sorted by creation date, so I need to change that before 2 will work.
Groups may also take some time as I'll have to redo the click handling...
great work brother do we only install the cab file? or what to do with the other files?
The cab file is all you need with WM5 +
