I don't know what about you guys, but I think that our phone cannot "carry out" the load of the WM 6.5.
I have tried all the great ROM's up to now - indeed great improvement, but still not getting to the latest performance, stability as well as power consumer as the 6.1.
We need to admit that our Polaris does not meet the "Vista" of the mobile requirement - and frankly, it is not expected to be like that.
From my point of view, we need to focus over the latest WM6.1 but to update it always with the latest application available in the market.
No other choice but to wait for WM7, maybe it will be lighter and faster than the 6.5.
Objections!
There is some drop in performance and battery life on Polaris with 6.5 compared to 6.1 but it is barely noticeable in day-to-day use (I use pcarvalho's 6.5 ROM - no complains).
As to the most important part - focusing on 6.1... it is like telling people to get to Windows 98 from XP. WM 6.5 has some framework features under the hood that are just unavailable in 6.1 and I mean not just Titanium or honeycomb menu... 6.1 is a bye-bye past and it is just pointless to waste time on "making it better".
Yet another thing. I think most of people here would agree that they live by the principles of "what if..." and "why not?". I think people here are driven by the process of exploring and testing new stuff itself, rather than by the results it may bring Than the idea of using slower, battery-hungrier, buggier WM 6.5 would not sound stupid.
I've tried both and I can understand what you're saying here, but then again you need to remember a lot of these cooks include lots of programs that a lot of people can do without (ie Remote desktop, MSN Money, etc...). Even if they're not running, the more free program memory you have on the device, the easier it is for it 'breathe'.
I remember updating my first HTC from 5.0 to 6.0 actually made it run faster on its OMAP 200mhz CPU. My second HTC upgrading from 6.0 to 6.1 also felt a bit faster, but not as much as 5.0 to 6.0.
6.5 undoubtedly is slower for me, I was using udk's 6.1 and now pcar's 6.5 (just for the record, they are BOTH VERY TALENTED cooks), but I think it's slower because as you said the device is reaching its limits with what the new OS's are offering.
A nice idea is if some people can maintain on the main forums a standardized benchmark of WM OS's on different devices, based on their naked version to compare as much as possible. I think when I have time I’ll benchmark the different ROM's offered for the Polaris and share with everyone.
On either case, you have to love this community & cooks for always breathing in new life to all our devices, I really encourage people to donate whatever to the site or cooks you are downloading from, it does help encourage them... at least show them some gratitude!
As for my next device, I believe the HD2 is for the first time a MAJOR upgrade for HTC devices with its snapdragon 1Ghz processor and increased RAM...I’ll probably keep the Polaris for at least another 6 months so that I can buy the HD2 at a less-premium price. I just hope the whole camera issue is fixed...they've always had problems with that - there's no point in having a 3MP camera if it has a really slow fps rate and can't get a proper focus on pics!
Well, that was my ramble!
Best regards,
Alan

I agree on this - I was writing my post just as you posted yours. I'm using pcar's and no objections for me, although I believe a lite\naked version could help with the response rate of the device (it's not slow at all, but udk's was just REALLY fast).
I've already asked pcar for a LITE\NAKED version, but poor guy is already giving so much of his time developing the new ROMs as well as the support...i've never seen a cook so active and dedicated...probably the best quality in a cook as you have the confidance that he will work & solve all issues & improvements. But hopefully he will manage to offer a stripped-down version.
It's right! WM6.5 on Polaris is not for a daily usage. I'm so satisfied with 6.1-3lit3VIII.
Well, i do believe wm 6.5 is very good with all new features, but it's just too much for polaris to handle. The best option would be to have all improvements from 6.5 core(HSUPA f.e.) minus all that flashy menus and such.
Also, i cannot stand the way it wants me to use it(mainly fingers), I like my stylus, and i don't want to smudge it with my fingers. Why there isn't a option to let me choose how do i want to control it?
tl;dr make a naked version of 6.5

I agree with the concept of what you have written, however if we will be case specific, the 6.5 version is to "heavy" for our "not young" Polaris. up to WM6.1 (XP) the system could be optimize for very good performance, but since WM6.5 (Vista), the Mobile is consuming 30-40% power (why?) and the response display can be really feel on daily use.
I don't think that this is compare to win98 - it is relative to XP that still continue to be use today, although the Win7 is out....
Mainly on the daily bases you don’t care which OS you have, as long as it runs fast and stable

Agree with every single word, I have nothing to say about the great and huge cookers and there very good work, I just wanted to "heads up" people to re-think again about the current HW Vs the New OS - sometimes, it doesn't work well not meter what you are going to do...
By the way, this is why there is new 1 GHz CPU
Probably I'll stay with the latest 6.1 version up to the time I'll replace my mobile.

Im using PCarvalho latest build 23053 and i have almost no complains...its fast and battery is normal as in 6.1.all i do is run cleanram twice a day.
Sometimes it does freeze and i have to soft reset but not often enough to piss me off,and theres a problem with scrolling big lists in file explorer.
I agree with Yinnon-I also tried 6.5 (Costas early version wich was great),but I saw that the performance in 6.1 is better and got back to M-Amine 6.1-till I buys my new device.

Oh, I do!!! I so MUCH do!! Remember those Win 98 times when you would loose all your work and were forced to reboot just because any inserted corrupt floppy disk or media player that stopped responding would DEFINITELY result in BSOD??? And it didn't matter for me back then that my PC would run like 50% slower with Win2000 because I knew stability and reliability is sometimes more important than speed.
As to the features of WM6.5 I'll repeat that in day-to-day use (like 3 weeks since I've installed pcarvalho's latest ROM) I don't see any major performance problems on my Polaris whatsoever. Battery life is shorter, that's it. Media or GPS software, M2D v.2.0, Camera, 2G calls, you name it - everything runs good and stable. Not rocket-fast, like on some naked 6.1 ROMs but I just don't care, cause 6.1 is a thing of past for me.
P.S. Wanna see some real problems with performance? Try installing 3D drivers and Touch Flo 3D

No, seriously, people thats for everyone personally to decide what to use and what ROM to cook (maybe those cooks are bored with 6.1 and had enough of it already - didn't you think about that? ) . But don't forget that if there is a problem, it doesn't mean the whole thing is bad and should be abandoned. Maybe you will find it more interesting to try to solve the problem.
I do not know... the polaris has four major drawbacks from my point of view: the camera should be better, it has no accelerometer, has no TV/music out mode and the technology of the screen is "primitive". For the rest I think the polaris was so well equiped that even now can resist hardware comparison with newer machines. After two years my polaris was stolen and I had to buy a new htc and after comparing I ended with another Polaris.
In my opinion, the big issue is about how many people are there developing software, drivers, roms, etc. People around has been able to install wm6.1, 6.5, android, unix, 3d drivers... it is only a matter of software and unfortunately, most of polaris users in xda have moved to newer devices.
Regarding your question I love naked versions: if you like pcarvalho try 21820 LT, I did not upgrade anymore after that version. You can also try mine Lite rom too, I think it is fast ... but it is just born I am a new to cooking. If you go for 6.1 naked I recommend swtos roms better than any other ones, even the one you mention (at least at the time I had it installed).
I personally would never go back to 6.1 and not even in another life to windows 6.0. I only feel bad about not discovering/daring custom roms before. For me 6.5 battery life is only noticeable when using gps outdoor in the mountain: 4 hours and my phone is dry, which is something you do not want to happen in the mountain, so I have learned to use the GPS only for finding my way when I have problems rather than recording all the way. WM 6.5 more than anything offers me thumb.friendly menus and scrolling. Polaris continues to offer me a good all-in-one choice. If you can live without high demanding UI (lots of things in memory and lots of scrolling and redrawing) I think 6.5 is still a bearable OS for our old Polaris. The difficult point becomes then how to strip the core wm6.5 from the fancy UI around it.
Let's wait for a com5 kitchen of for a naked pcarvalhos rom !!!

I totally agree with you...not just with the Polaris but with most of the HTC devices, this is why HD2 is (FINALLY!) a leap in hardware advancements. Ofcourse it still lacks the TV-Out & not sure about the camera but hopefully the camera will be resolved with the LED lighting as it's the light-filter that slows the fps down. I just hope the next-gen devices see the same leaps in technology & power as opposed to small improvements here & there!

Exactly, my phone is reminding me of the days of the old pentium 1-2 & upgrading from Windows 95 to 98 to 2000, etc ...as long as the hardware can keep up performance-wise with the new software. We have an amazing community of cooks, testers, and users to keep the best coming, and while a lot of the earlier cooks left, thankfully we're still seeing some good talent coming on to the scene. And hopefully we'll be seeing more naked versions as well!
Eventually I think the polaris vs the new software generations will naturally push us to the newer\faster models with more hardware features to make the most out of... and this is before being dumped again by those cooks with more money hehe

I'm with you 100%. btw, regarding the battery & GPS, if you're running the GPS for 4 hours it's going to drain your battery regardless of the OS you're using. In that case for the mountains, consider getting a solar or AA battery-powered charger (should be just a few $).
Regarding 'com5', i've always wanted to ask what is com2, com3 etc... i searched the forums but it was hard to find the right post with those keywords...can someone please explain? Thanks!
Just my 2 cents. I came to Polaris after 3 unhappy days spent with Touch Pro (will not comment it at all) Only thing I dislike with Polaris is a yellowish color temperature of the screen. And thats it.
Wm6.5 is definitely not heavy for Polaris - unless you understand wm6.5 is all about Titanium and Honeycomb start menu. The problem is that cookers mostly post ROMs overloaded with various things that YOU might never need (and cannot edit). Try one of 6.5 kithens (Gullum's is excellent) and clear everything you don't need from it to see how fast wm6.5 can be. My Polaris has some 62 MB free with S2U2, Today Agenda, HTC Home (yep, usability over looks) and pTravel alarm running on homescreen (all cooked into ROM). It is faster compared to 3lite VI naked ROM I flashed to my brother's Polaris. (3lite VI ROM is mentioned only as example, and is one of the best and fastest 6.1 ROMs IMPO).
From my experience wm6.5 biggest advantage is in tweaked interface compared to 6.1 (for example finger friendly tree-dialogue menus, taskbar buttons on the bottom of the screen, finger friendly contacts and calendar apps etc.), with some other minor glitches of 6.1 resolved. Add to that fact that with recent builds you have visible changes between them and you can choose one according to your preferences - gives you something very promising and inevitable.
Pretty much a discussion/suggestion thread for people who are looking for a good rom under their own little "specifications".Just something interesting to help me and others find their rom. I really liked this rom mostly because of the load up times of apps and swapping through home screens was smooth. However, the rom did not carry much eyecandy and gaming was somewhat laggy.
You need to add theme because Darkstar makes Super D look sexy!
And one other thought, this isn't going to mean much because this is personal taste and what one likes another won't.
Nah without theme would be better.
so now that we have some options i'm having a tough time deciding what to stick with. i really don't have the time to back up and test each flavor so i thought i'd throw it out there..
it seems like the 3 main roms [fission, gummyjar and tanzinite] are all pushing for the most asop like experience possible. that being said, i'm finding it hard to choose one to stick with being that at this point it seems like none of them are bringing any real new features to the table aside from streamlining the asop experience.
i've been using fission since it was released for d2, and may be tempted to stick with it due to the consistency of updates.
can anyone explain why it may be worth switching to gummyjar or tanzinite?
There is also apex, used it and would recommend it.

I personally like fission for the quick support and is updated often, but not too often. Its fast, stable, and there is a bunch of awesome themes for it.
Sent from my DROID2 using XDA App
I'm currently running Ultimate Droid RC2 and love it. The only downfall is no GPS; I'm in a rural area that I know well so I don't need it right now but when i get moved back to a larger area I will want it back on. If the GPS isn't added by then I'll be going back to GummyJAR, which was snappy and never really gave me any grief.
As an aside, the AOSP thing is a big deal because it's ridiculously customizable and much easier on system resources. Spend some time messing with themes and different apps and you'll be able to create just about any experience on the droid that you want.
Fission is a pretty solid rom. I used it for a long time and with the new updates I am going to be checking it out again.
Currently I'm running GummyJar 2.5 on my D2. I would say the main advantage I have had with GJ is that it is fast, really fast. So much so that I actually find the other roms to be a bit sluggish compared to it. It's not a colossal speed difference if you are coming from another rom but it is noticeable. I also liked how there is a lot less blur in it than the other roms I tried. Fission slowly has more and more blur creeping back into it which is what is kinda pushing me away from it. Also as far as I know GJ is the only one with lockscreen sliders and some of the cyanogen mod apps built into it. It's also felt more stable to me.
My last reason is that after using fission for a few days mine always began to slow down a bit or throw a few errors here and there. It kinda feels to me like windows xp did, as you use it more it gets more problems. I haven't had any issues or slowdowns on GJ and have been using it about 2 weeks.
All that said, they are all good roms. I don't think tanzanite is stable enough for daily use so unless you are pretty savvy and don't mind having some stuff not work I'd wait on it for the time being. GJ, Fission and Apex are all stable and run much better than stock. If you like fission for the updater and are happy with it there is not really any huge reason to go jump on another rom.
Would like to point out that this is probably not the correct area for this.
All in all, it's a matter of choice, whichever one is more your cup of tea, there's no clear cut best one out there, just one that may fit you better and whatnot. Just try them all once and pick one, don't think there will ever be close to a consensus about this
A little history: 4 years ago i bought and owned (still own) a G1 - HTC Dream - and ever since custom Android roms were available I have been very happy to try out the latest and greatest. I think jesusfreke being the first but cant remember now its such a long time ago. Then along came cyanogen with hhis rom, brilliant. There were so many new options and the speed increase was great. and because of this rom I kept my G1 for over 3 years as my main phone. When the time came that cyanogen stopped supporting the G1 I decided it was time for an upgrade and decided I would get the Atrix based on its powerful specs and all of the other amazing features it has.
So 8 months on I now have an Atrix on which I have tried nearly all available roms and am currently running the latest version of Aura. (not an endorsement for Aura, simply a statement). Included in my trials was CM7, which i was so excited about when i first heard that development was happening. However since installing CM7 and trying it out for around a month I have to say that amongst all of the other roms for the Atrix it is not the holy grail that it has been on other phones. In fact in its current incarnation its relevance it questionable on the Atrix particularly when reading that the devs are struggling to find solutions to getting some of the features working.
I know that there are many people that bought the Atrix because it was powerful. But, it does have other features that, although not unique are certainly what helps to give the Atrix an edge over the competition. Webtop for example is a feature that used only ocassionally is a valuable asset to the device and simply discard it at for a tweak that boosts performance by mere micro seconds is a poor trade. it would be the same as buying a convertible ferrari and removing the button that puts the roof down - it saved some weight and the car can now accelerate to 60mph marginally faster but you cant put the roof down anymore. So you might as well have bought a hard top ferrari which already went faster. The same theory as buying the Atrix, if you want that extra bit of speed, might as well buy the SGSII.
So, there it is. Thats why i run a different rom at the moment, because all of the features are available and quite honestly with a bit of tweaking i can no longer either see of feel any difference in speed to CM7 and my battery lasts a perfectly acceptable amount of time for a smartphone (Depending on my usage). For those of you who might start mentioning blur as being the reason to move to CM7 that is another area where devs of other custom roms have done a fine job of removing anything really noticable and anything else that I found annoying I simply used TB and personal preference to sort out. (Although i havent yet figured out the accounts manager and anyway of getting rid of that awful blur interface. Maybe one day)
In conclusion, no ROM is perfect and as much as I admire the devs work I simply don't think that CM7 is relevant on the Atrix.
Thoughts?
i think it greatly depends on what your needs/desires are for your phone. i bought my atrix with zero intentions of using the fingerprint scanner or webtop. in the months before CM7 came out, i never even tried them out on stock or custom ROMs.
i really enjoy the extra features that CM7 adds to my atrix (however small they may be). the only downside ive experienced is inconsistent battery behavior, but i cant narrow it down so im not even sure its a cyanogen thing.
any ROM is relevant if there are people who want to use it. it may not be relevant for you, or anyone who is set on webtop/FPS. but to each his own. thats the beauty of open-source right??
It's to each their own, I guess. If someone wants CM7 on their phone, they're going to go for it. Some people are benchmark fiends, others just like the feel of it.
Completely agreed with fischwrap. Many people bought the Atrix because it was the fastest phone at release date, or the best price/performance ratio one. That people might or might not care about the fingerprint scanner (a lot of people in fact don't like the power button placement and use volume to wake, some others don't even use a lockscreen, let alone a fingerprint scanner) or about webtop (believe it or not people without HDTVs or LCDs exist )
And I know the 'don't care or need' side has at least 5300 people on it

Same here. I also purchased it with eager anticipation that devs would also get it for the same reasons and port CM7. You guys kick major ass. Took a bit more blood, sweat and tears because of the bootloader but our Atrix's are rockin' now!f
i think the Atrix can truly shine regardless of what ROM you use. it's an extremely powerful phone and that will show in any comparison. The kernel plays a very large part in determining performance as well though. Even if you are on standard clock speeds with one of faux's kernels you'll have amazing benchmarks and real world results, and even more so if you choose to overclock. CM7 is a great ROM for every phone, and i don't believe it's relevance to the atrix should be in question, but merely its relevance to you. i've been an android guy for quite a while dating back to the G1 days as well (Do you remember the ROM bible? we need one of those for the Atrix! ) and i shed a silent tear when those forums got moved to the legacy and low activity sections. but this is much like when Sense ROMs started appearing for the G1. Bluetooth and Camera commonly didn't work on them, and some people said they wouldn't use Sense until those were fixed. FP Scanner and Webtop are tenfold less essential than either of those, yet some won't use CM7 until those are fixed. it really just comes down to what you look for in a phone and what you use the most.
I don't use webtop (although no fingerprint took me a long long time to get over), as such CM7 offers some features such as notification power management, being able to adjust lowest screen brightness, having control over when the phone vibrates, etc. THe extensive control CM7 allows you that other Motoblur based roms does not alone is really worth it for me. I can see your point but it's rather ridiculous to suggest CM7 is not relevant. It is still by far the best rom on Atrix at the moment if you're able to live w/o webtop/fingerprint scanner.

Legacy devices, yeah that's where my beloved tilt(Kaiser) got moved to. I love Android but I do miss the kaiser days I remember running android from the sd card on the kaiser lol. At first touch screen was not working, no camera, no bluetooth, no wifi, and by the time I left the kaiser they had that stuff working.

I disagree. A rom may have those 2 features but run like a G1 while another can be missing those 2 features and run smooth as butter. It is dependent on taste but I'd pick the latter.
The thing that sets the Atrix apart was the FP and the webtop. I don't use either, and I use cm7.
But without those 2 features enabled, it just another phone. Fast phone tthough. But not the best rom, IMO.
Homebase is the best rom for THIS phone. Smooth as butter and full functionality of the phone. I love CyanogenMod, its fast as hell, very stable. But it does the same stuff my little Aria does.
I'm tired, don't know if this makes sense to anyone else.

Thoughts?

I agree that CM7 is not the perfect rom and sacrifices are required. However, using Blurr-based roms you're also sacrificing the functionality of CM7. And judging from the number of people flashing CM7, at significant part of the community prefers the CM7 functionality over fingerprint and webtop.
I feel this both suggests there is a big part for CM7 and it should be in the conversation of one of the best roms. Hopefully one day Blur-based roms will integrate CM7's customizability (unlikely) or CM7 will get a working fpscanner and webtop.
I think CM is more than relevant for the Atrix!
I have bought the Atrix with the lapdock and I have tested Motoblur as well as Aura and have used the lapdock. Before I have used a htc Hero with CM for nearly 2 years.
I really like the possibility of the lapdock in connection with a kind of webtop or similar functionality. But due to my long experience with CM on my Hero, I have tried CM-7.1 despite the fact that I do not have webtop or at least hdmi-mirroring in a sufficient screen-resolution, because I have missed the score of customization of CM.
And I am absolutely satisfied with CM. At least for my personal usage, it IS the best available ROM. It is faster and smother than the other, have many more convenient settings like configurable screens, buttons and LED-notification. Everything in an efficient way. And CM has an exceptional battery-life, I got roughly 30% more battery time.
OK, I am a little bit missing webtop, but I am hoping hdmi-mirroring will be working soon ;-) I have used the FP on Aura, but I really do not miss it, because I was used to unlock with menu-button with my hero, so I stick to that, because it is faster than FP.
If I could acquire a cheap Lapdock I would, I really want to use this phone to it's full potential.

I don't think the CM7 mod can really be considered stable.
I have a good amount of trouble with lag, slow internet, fc's, and obviously the features that don't work.
Hopefully in time they can improve it more.
I've tried many roms on mine and finally decided to settle on stock 2.3.4 U.A.E retail. It is very nicely done.
CM7 is plenty relevant to the Atrix. If it weren't, then there wouldn't be 5,485 people using it (according to CM's official device statistics page*). A lot of people bought this phone for its raw power, and could care less about webtop or the fingerprint scanner. The team doing the port said they want to add that at some point, and the fingerprint scanner at least on some level is working on unreleased builds.
This isnt to mention that once an official (by CM) release is out, CM could provide an excellent base for ROM developers who dont like blur. Blur is fast on the Atrix, but still isnt as fast as vanilla android. Once ICS comes out, we'll definetly get it before blur roms do as well.
At the moment, blur roms have an edge in that they fully support the hardware and have more chances of being bug free. But it wont be long before that all changes.
If you want guaranteed stability, webtop or the fingerprint scanner, use a blur rom. Otherwise, use CM7. If you dont care and just want a phone, use stock. Just because some people prefer one type doesn't invalidate the significance of the other.

When you boot CM for the first time, you're given the option of sending them statistics data. That can be turned off at any time by going Settings > CM Settings > System > Anonymous statistics
Since its opt-in, there are probably more users than that.
After my Note 2 died a rain and asphalt related semi-death, I've been using my old HTC Hero while waiting for a new generation of features that make it worthwile, watches may not apply
I've been doing ok, expect for the lack of speed, just had to adjust to not thinking of the phone as a great multitasker,
but as I'm looking for a new development project in my spare time, I could justify holding on to the Hero a bit longer,
thereby having money for beer instead of a new phone
I've never ventured past flashing, but did make my own linux build back in the day, so it would be a nice reminder and broadening of
CV, as .NET is responsible for 80% of my income.
So, I'm curious, since KitKat has cut down it's memory addiction to 512mb, are there any other factors that would hinder a build for the
HTC Hero?
Also, is there any concensus of what might be a sensible rom to try and port? (read: best balance between "bloat" and speed with the HTC Hero in mind). Or is there no new ground worth walking?
Thanks a bunch!

Hi,
I own a HTC Hero GSM and I really like it. I tried a LOT of roms, so if you need some advices, tell me.
Unfortunately, the only ROMs that work smooth on the Hero are the Gingerbread ones, 2.3.x, and I have found them also user-friendly, because of their "smoothing" that on the Hero is not simple to have.
I tried also ICS, but it doesn't work for daily use.
Anyway, GB is fast and smooth. Try Elelinux or MIUI, but Elelinux for me is the most stable one. Also, you can find a ROM (Cronos) but it is not here on XDA, similar to Elelinux.
Hope it helps! I'm not a developer, but I did some things for the Hero. I'm sorry things turned out that way for this phone, but it is so old that developers can't support it anymore.
