Pretty much a discussion/suggestion thread for people who are looking for a good rom under their own little "specifications".Just something interesting to help me and others find their rom. Dates should not matter =) but of course only G1 roms =P. I chose my own format, you may add other options or suggest to add them to OP. Not sure if this was done before, hopefully not, or else Im gonna feel stupid...Feel free to also use this as "My Experience" ratings(when you flash a rom and it's laggy and unstable, Warn others!)
Format-
Rom Name: (you can also add dev)
Rom Firmware:
Rom Speed:0-10
Rom Stability:0-10(FCs, Apps, etc.)
Gaming/Graphics(3D):0-10
Eyecandy:0-10
Overall rating:0-10

You may also add what you did/ didn't like, feel free to add comments and such.
Example-
Rom Name:Super D 1.9.3 bbuchacher
Rom Firmware:1.6
Rom Speed:9/10
Rom Stability:9/10
Gaming/Graphics(3D):7/10
Eyecandy:7/10
Overall rating:8/10

I really liked this rom mostly because of the load up times of apps and swapping through home screens was smooth. However, the rom did not carry much eyecandy and gaming was somewhat laggy.
You need to add theme because Darkstar makes Super D look sexy!
And one other thought, this isn't going to mean much because this is personal taste and what one likes another won't.
Nah without theme would be better.

I have tried various ROMs and some of them are quite good. However for reasons not entirely clear to me, the authors of these ROMs, in addition to adding some much needed functional improvements, decide to blingify/theme their ROMs in such a way that there is no easy way to go back to Stock Samsung theme.
Some of us are just looking to add functionality and not looking to change the look.
Why don't the ROM authors provide a theme separately for their ROMs
I agree, I love all the tweaks and functionality, but I also like the look of the stock rom. Options for themes would be great.
We're comin from a pure power source.
Then just try a deodexed version of froyo...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1036193
I think its more wise to ask the devs if they wouldnt mind making a stock theme for you to add to thier rom....due to the fact that they build thier roms primarily to suite them and then share it with you...ever think of it that way?
not flaming you,i would love a stock 2.1 theme to go along with one of these well built 2.2-2.2.1 roms but you have to keep in mind this is work that takes them away from other finer things in life that they are'nt paid to do
there is a touchwiz theme for bionix
...and a TouchWiz theme for Trigger
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1042282
It's completely relative. For me the Trigger theme is much cleaner (less bling) and better looking than the stock TouchWiz theme. Same for the stock Gingerbread theme that Bionix uses.
>Same for the stock Gingerbread theme that Bionix uses.
I would have been happy with stock Gingerbread theme on Bionix, if they did not take much liberties with it. Like making everything appear extra blue.
> there is a touchwiz theme for bionix
Thanks. I had hoped that something like this would exist. But did not find it earlier. From the screenshots, it looks good and I will most certainly give it a shot.
Most 2.2 and 2.2.1 roms around here already have a stock theme. Malice, Trigger, Bi-Winning to name a few. Others like Heathen's roms are actually built on an improved stock theme.
If you adore such a theme that much try requesting it from your rom's dev or simply jump ships to another rom that fits your eyes. Just don't go all kong foo on devs around here blaming them for what ain't even their fault. At least blame the one responsible, not generically on the whole community.
I have been using Wolf's GB ROM for 10 days now.
It is not only really smoother than stock SE GB rom, but also so stable. Really, it was a child's play for me to install it (actually it was also my first custom ROM) just like using a stock rom..
Now,
I'm happy with this rom at the moment but i want to try a couple more roms. I'm a little bit obsessed about smoothness of the phone.
Which one would you chose as the smoothest if you have to?
Please answer the poll if you have tried at least two of them..
Further reviews, ups and downs and advices are accepted..
1. Wolfs TW Gingerbread ROM
2. Blue Sparks
3. VMOD V5
4. ThGo2
5. Cyanogenmod
First of all, you forgot T.E.A.M. ROM in the poll.

That's the case with all custom ROMs, installing them is as simple as flashing one or two zips in recovery.
I find that installing a custom ROM is actually simpler than flashing stock with SEUS/PC Companion/FlashTool.

In my humble opinion, which is based on experience since I myself am working on tweaking stock SE ROM for the past 4 months or so, a stock-based ROM is, at the end of the day, a modified but still stock ROM.
Granted there are the popular "tweaks" which are basically scripts that run on startup to optimise mostly the internal Android task killer and/or some kernel parameters, etc. The very core of the ROM, in most, if not all, cases remains the same. That way, my advice is to find a ROM that combines an acceptable by your personal taste level of "smoothness" (which is a purely relevant term, as it cannot be measured accurately), graphical enviroment and features.
Each user will probably give you a different answer because user experience may differ due to countless factors (apps installed, general way and purpose of using the phone). Gamers would mostly prefer a "stripped" ROM with minimal apps to leave them with space and memory for intense gaming. IMers (people using the phone mainly to communicate by mail, SMS, instant-messaging) will most of the times not notice performance improvements between ROMs because said apps are generally light-weight.
For a totally different experience, for example, Cyanogen could very well be your answer.
It is by default much smoother to SE ROMs, alas there might be things missing or not working at all, along with certain inconveniences.
So, it all comes down to what you want to do with your phone and what you feel is better. As with everything in life, obsession is never a good thing. At the end of the day, you want to be using your phone and not flashing it and setting it up from scratch every other day, right? And, let me say, that a poll will never help you as much as flashing and using the ROMs yourself.
Good luck!
Agreed...
cyanogen is great because it uses minimal system resources. It is a nice light, basic alternative, and therefore is quite fast.
As usual Iris explained it so well that a further answer isn´t really neccesary
Just a few summarised words; When you prefer a ROm where everything is working choose a ROM based on stock because just there everything is working especially the camera. Just there you have the Sony Ericcson camera app where you have features that aren´t available in real Custom ROMS.
In this case I can recommend you T.E.A.M Rom. It is very fast, beautiful and the support is awesome. But yeah....Iris mentioned that, too
When your priority isn´t the camera but best battery life and smoothness I can recommend you Tatsuo´s CM7 ROM running with his own kernel.
And where is MIUI? I happy with this ROM

Uhm, ... wrong. I want to flash and set it up every other day, sometimes even 2-3 times a day
Admitted, my desire to flash is greatly reduced since I use T.E.A.M ROM. But FXP046 will be a definite go for me and hell, I LOVE to play with many different ROMs. I have to admit that I reduced the apps I always install to a minimum and only install more apps if I plan to stay a little longer (--> T.E.A.M).
So, seeing it from this point of view, I make the worst out of my smartphone because I rarely can use its full potential. But who cares, flashing is fun
I need a good custom ROM, simple, yet with a lot of new features.
I tried CM7, but it still has a lot of bugs and it's a very complex process to install and uninstall. And I did not like the UI.
I need a good rom, as I am currently in stock rom.
Have a look through the forums and you'll find plenty. Decide for yourself. There's threads asking for "best ROM" every day, and best is subjective.
is there a thread with all of the known roms?
Just look in the forums for threads with [ROM] at the start.
cm7 and miui are the only real custom ones.. otherwise look at check rom revolution, it's one of the best based of the stock rom and then install a custom launcher for a decent UI
For starters you may want to look at Cognition or VillainROM as they are based on stock firmware with a few tweaks.
Litening is pretty good too.
Just test a few out until you find one you like ;-)

Try this website theunlockr.com/ and then select the roms and then android and your device... it got a few pretty good roms.. I'm currently using the lightning rom... its really good...
Try out the website... good for other handsets too...
cheers

The best rom is everybody's own opinion. My personal opinion is to stick with Samsung based roms instead of Cyanogenmod or MIUI because of the better camera and the native divx playback etc.

I would recommend Simple & Clean Rom v1.3... awesome battery life and good performance as well.
You should really try the ICS ROM, it's by far better than the others.

Don't be a ****. the guy is probably new here and wants some advice, not abuse. tbh i've been on here a while and it's still a question that pops up in my head from time to time.
I've used Power + 2.0 SP1 which has ceased development. Battery life is excellent, nearly 2 days standby, and basically the original ROM.
then I've tried VillianRom 3.0 and it's basically the same, just has VRtweaks which is an app to download minor tweaks to the system.
I'm running Miui 1.11.11 totally different, has a Android / iPhone feel to it. very nice, Battery life is above average. worth ago in m opinion but I do miss the Camera from the original ROM. You can theme the phone via the themes option which is nice, and you can install Go Launcher which makes it look like any other Android on the Desktop, but once you use the dialer, sms, settings etc it's still very Miui.
I think the real answer is there all very similar with devs personal opinion of needed changes, ROMs based on the original are strangely enough like the original, and ROMs like Cyanogenmod are like a Google Nexus, i.e. AOSP(sp?) then Miui is a totally different concept based on it's own look style and performance.
Personally i'm awaiting the ICS ROMs dev will be soon knocking out. I never found Android perticularly polished compared to say an iPhone, ICS seems to bring this forward some i'm quite excited. but in the meantime, Miui might fill that gap. Otherwise your stuck with the current ROM

I'm not a ****. I'm just not patient with people. Yes, maybe I'm a ****. But what does he expect? 100 people just coming in here and share their favorite ROM? Would he be then able to pick one from those? Would he count how many votes does each ROM received? Why not go for popularity then, and check which ROM thread has the most views, at least he would get a larger sample, even if won't give him too much information. Would the answers be subjective? Does he expect a short review from all of us for all the ROMs we tried? What happens if the first 10 persons who respond are total morons who only picked the worst ROMs ever?
I see persons like him, I imagine a random lazy guy who bought his phone because it was cool. He is not satisfied with what he got, so he thought he wants more "new features". He has no idea what "new features" the "new ROMs" can bring, but since there are so many ROMs, they can't all be the same, right? Some of them have to have some shiny lasers or whatever! But how does he find that exact ROM? Let's create a new thread, and ask which is the ROM with the most shiny new laser!!1. But it has to be simple. CM7 was too complex and buggy. At least that's what he heard, he didn't find any, except he couldn't play the fullHD porn on his phone anymore . So let's see what others recommend, so we can install it in a simple way. Because if it's not simpler than 3 clicks, he will ask 10 questions on how to install it. And after everything is working correctly, he won't like the ROM, because it's not shiny enough. Eventually he will find a ROM which has an included shiny theme, and he will think his ROM is full of features! ... oh **** I gotta go back to work.
Well, maybe I over-analyzed the situation a bit, in which case I would have one suggestion: search for the similar threads on these forums, you will find many, and see what people have answered...
WajkIUI ROM
I've had this ROM on my SGS2 for about two days now. It's called "WajkIUI ROM". And it's the best I've ever flashed to my device. It has a whole new look, it extends the battery life, the sytem apps are customized, you can change the theme of the ROM as well, and it just has a new overall feel to it.
You just have to try it for yourself. Below is the link to the xda thread. Hope you LOVE it like I do.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1352386
Hi to all, i premise that i love stock look and i want my GNote look like a GNote, not another phone, so i'm not intersted to roms with too much visual mods.
I come from a Galaxy S2 from day1 and i flashed it with many many roms and every time i flashed new rom it was full of modded apk and tricks very usefull. Now i switched to a Note and i'm very happy with it but after tried some cooked roms i came to the conclusion that IN MY OPINION no roms can offer more than a rooted stock rom maybe with jkay mods and unused apps removed or freezed with Titanium. Why i say this? Simply because latest Notes cooked Rom doesn't offer what is important for me and i think for other users: browser with user agent in settings, phone without ascending ringtone and noise filter off by default etc. In major cooked rom i read in description: tweaked this tweaked that but i see no real speed improvement in comparison to a (rooted) stock rom where all GNote app works and not like i read in cooked rom's comment: "this app doesnt work properly, my phone suffer random reboots, that app give me fc, after some day my phone become laggy etc. So, after tried many cooked roms now i think that with a rooted odexed kl4 with jkay mod my phone isn't less smooth than a "cooked rom equipped" one except for quadrant or other benchmarks results that are only numbers and doesn't give you a real result of how smooth is your device in daily use.
With these considerations i don't want to offend nobody and developer's hard work (i'm not developer and i admire their ability) i want only know if i'm the only one to think that and (if not) to advise developers about what users would like to see in future cooked rom.
Let me know what you think and before to say you don't agree with me try stock kl4 to compare.
That's what I think also, and that's what I did.
Stock la4 with jkay mod and removed a **** load of built in apps with titanium.
My phone flies and is smooth as butter, battery life awesome, no bugs, no crashes, nothing wrong.
Pure experience...
I miss roms like the ones developed by RMK40 for the HTC Desire Z, they were pure stock and just enhanced with tweaks needed to make them perfect, no frankeinstein bizarre stuff.
When I read things like: "libraries from ICS" I'm like, WTF !!!
It's like fitting your car with parts from another car...
It might be a little faster, but could be much less reliable.
Anyway, I recognise those devs are very talented, as there is no way I could do it myself, but it's just against my religion to mix libraries from different systems.
Like the sony bravia mod... what a POS !!!
There are only two good reasons to use a custom ROM for me: Power Menu and latest firmware. So I use Sheep ROM, the least modded one.

Power menu is also customizable with jkay on stock kl4 i also use it
(I hitted "thanks" instead of "quote" in your post )
Same here l, I love Stock looks and feels, I always stay away from ROMs that have there own graphics in, like RocketROM. I am using Cassie LA3 V6.

Hi
I want a rom that would have all the following:
- themes
- expanded desktop
- navigation bar heigh changer
- tablet interface
- i dont want to update my n7 every few days. I want a stable rom.
Whitch rom is the fastest and can offer good battery life along with these features? As you see i am just a regular user and dont search for anything too fancy.
I have tried P.A rom (was fun to play with but performance was slowierd than stock), P.A.C (it was so fast but battery life was bad) and tons of other roms that only confused me...

There are a lot of ROMs that are stable and quick, I'm running pacman and its stable, give it a try! the things you wanted are available in lots of ROMs and the performance and battery usage is effected a lot by which kernel you choose to run with your ROM.
I'm running pacman ROM with m-kernel and pretty happy, but this best is to just flash and try it for yourself, hope this helps.......
"Best rom" posts are not allowed on xda. You are encouraged to try the available roms and decide which is best for you. Nobody can tell you which is best for you, because only you know how you use your device. Mods always close these threads pretty quickly.

Carbon and LiquidSmooth are both popular choices for a lightweight and customizable rom, which are (imo) almost as smooth as stock (Liquid is a fork of carbon). But as mentioned, there are many great choices out there, Xylon and XenonHD look pretty cool as well... Go try out and see which one fits your needs! :good:
Oh btw, you might wanna check this thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2151963
I think your question has been answered in the above posts but to make this clear, go to dev section, you will see many roms, what are you waiting for?!, start testing them and then decide what suits you better.
