Help me to choose a ROM? - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi
I want a rom that would have all the following:
- themes
- expanded desktop
- navigation bar heigh changer
- tablet interface
- i dont want to update my n7 every few days. I want a stable rom.
Whitch rom is the fastest and can offer good battery life along with these features? As you see i am just a regular user and dont search for anything too fancy.
I have tried P.A rom (was fun to play with but performance was slowierd than stock), P.A.C (it was so fast but battery life was bad) and tons of other roms that only confused me...

There are a lot of ROMs that are stable and quick, I'm running pacman and its stable, give it a try! the things you wanted are available in lots of ROMs and the performance and battery usage is effected a lot by which kernel you choose to run with your ROM.
I'm running pacman ROM with m-kernel and pretty happy, but this best is to just flash and try it for yourself, hope this helps.......

"Best rom" posts are not allowed on xda. You are encouraged to try the available roms and decide which is best for you. Nobody can tell you which is best for you, because only you know how you use your device. Mods always close these threads pretty quickly.

Carbon and LiquidSmooth are both popular choices for a lightweight and customizable rom, which are (imo) almost as smooth as stock (Liquid is a fork of carbon). But as mentioned, there are many great choices out there, Xylon and XenonHD look pretty cool as well... Go try out and see which one fits your needs! :good:
Oh btw, you might wanna check this thread; http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2151963

I think your question has been answered in the above posts but to make this clear, go to dev section, you will see many roms, what are you waiting for?!, start testing them and then decide what suits you better.

need a good custom rom for galaxy s2

I need a good custom ROM, simple, yet with a lot of new features.
I tried CM7, but it still has a lot of bugs and it's a very complex process to install and uninstall. And I did not like the UI.
I need a good rom, as I am currently in stock rom.
Have a look through the forums and you'll find plenty. Decide for yourself. There's threads asking for "best ROM" every day, and best is subjective.
is there a thread with all of the known roms?
Just look in the forums for threads with [ROM] at the start.
cm7 and miui are the only real custom ones.. otherwise look at check rom revolution, it's one of the best based of the stock rom and then install a custom launcher for a decent UI
For starters you may want to look at Cognition or VillainROM as they are based on stock firmware with a few tweaks.
Litening is pretty good too.
Just test a few out until you find one you like ;-)

Try this website theunlockr.com/ and then select the roms and then android and your device... it got a few pretty good roms.. I'm currently using the lightning rom... its really good...
Try out the website... good for other handsets too...
cheers

The best rom is everybody's own opinion. My personal opinion is to stick with Samsung based roms instead of Cyanogenmod or MIUI because of the better camera and the native divx playback etc.

I would recommend Simple & Clean Rom v1.3... awesome battery life and good performance as well.
You should really try the ICS ROM, it's by far better than the others.

Don't be a ****. the guy is probably new here and wants some advice, not abuse. tbh i've been on here a while and it's still a question that pops up in my head from time to time.
I've used Power + 2.0 SP1 which has ceased development. Battery life is excellent, nearly 2 days standby, and basically the original ROM.
then I've tried VillianRom 3.0 and it's basically the same, just has VRtweaks which is an app to download minor tweaks to the system.
I'm running Miui 1.11.11 totally different, has a Android / iPhone feel to it. very nice, Battery life is above average. worth ago in m opinion but I do miss the Camera from the original ROM. You can theme the phone via the themes option which is nice, and you can install Go Launcher which makes it look like any other Android on the Desktop, but once you use the dialer, sms, settings etc it's still very Miui.
I think the real answer is there all very similar with devs personal opinion of needed changes, ROMs based on the original are strangely enough like the original, and ROMs like Cyanogenmod are like a Google Nexus, i.e. AOSP(sp?) then Miui is a totally different concept based on it's own look style and performance.
Personally i'm awaiting the ICS ROMs dev will be soon knocking out. I never found Android perticularly polished compared to say an iPhone, ICS seems to bring this forward some i'm quite excited. but in the meantime, Miui might fill that gap. Otherwise your stuck with the current ROM

I'm not a ****. I'm just not patient with people. Yes, maybe I'm a ****. But what does he expect? 100 people just coming in here and share their favorite ROM? Would he be then able to pick one from those? Would he count how many votes does each ROM received? Why not go for popularity then, and check which ROM thread has the most views, at least he would get a larger sample, even if won't give him too much information. Would the answers be subjective? Does he expect a short review from all of us for all the ROMs we tried? What happens if the first 10 persons who respond are total morons who only picked the worst ROMs ever?
I see persons like him, I imagine a random lazy guy who bought his phone because it was cool. He is not satisfied with what he got, so he thought he wants more "new features". He has no idea what "new features" the "new ROMs" can bring, but since there are so many ROMs, they can't all be the same, right? Some of them have to have some shiny lasers or whatever! But how does he find that exact ROM? Let's create a new thread, and ask which is the ROM with the most shiny new laser!!1. But it has to be simple. CM7 was too complex and buggy. At least that's what he heard, he didn't find any, except he couldn't play the fullHD porn on his phone anymore . So let's see what others recommend, so we can install it in a simple way. Because if it's not simpler than 3 clicks, he will ask 10 questions on how to install it. And after everything is working correctly, he won't like the ROM, because it's not shiny enough. Eventually he will find a ROM which has an included shiny theme, and he will think his ROM is full of features! ... oh **** I gotta go back to work.
Well, maybe I over-analyzed the situation a bit, in which case I would have one suggestion: search for the similar threads on these forums, you will find many, and see what people have answered...
WajkIUI ROM
I've had this ROM on my SGS2 for about two days now. It's called "WajkIUI ROM". And it's the best I've ever flashed to my device. It has a whole new look, it extends the battery life, the sytem apps are customized, you can change the theme of the ROM as well, and it just has a new overall feel to it.
You just have to try it for yourself. Below is the link to the xda thread. Hope you LOVE it like I do.

Use the AOKP M6 its the best ,fast very stable.
I would say CM9. Because.....
-Built from the ground up from aosp. Makes it very clean
-Very Smooth, much smoother than GB
-Tons of other options such as lockscreen shortcuts, theme engine, status bar toggles etc.
-Lots of support
-Updated VERY frequently
-Almost No bugs.
I'd recommend CM9 or AOKP. Both can be found in the dev section here.
I've tried most ics and I'd definitely have to say slim ics.
It has strict rules about keeping it light so you can definitely expect serious performance from this one (most likely better than the rest) yet has all the cool bells and whistles from the kang project like customized toggles, battery indicators, bln, etc.
It's updated frequently when the author thinks something happens that warrants an update (like the linaro thing). Your phone will even notify you when a new rom update is available.
No bug fixes because, to be honest, i've been running it for a few months and I'm yet to find a bug. If you look through this rom's dev thread you'll find most people joke about something else because there are that few problems to talk about in this rom. They will seriously answer, however, if a real problem is posted.
The only thing to take care is the default launcher. Dev has included lightning launcher (for lightness purposes). For as awesome as it may be, most people find it a ***** to customize and just end up installing nova or apex launchers.
Battery's fine - lasts the day with heavy use, it's all i ask. Def lasts longer if i did less.
Some of my uses for this rom:
Heavy texting / phonecalls
Friendscaster (aka facebook whith awesome widget)
Bluetooth connection with my car (stream mp3 and handsfree, contacts even show in my car)
Heavy book/manga reading
Video watching, yt, flash pages, movies/series to kill time
Web browsing ( default browser is actually very good, plays flash like a champ)
Torrent downloading
Gps (my gps never ever worked no matter what. It's actually borderline usable with this rom)
Xda
Listen some music
Take pictures (very good camera, you can check my cat in the "show your best shots: thread)
Manage my calendar and quick notes
Document editing (gdocs)
Play some games (I'm on max payne atm)
Etc
If nothing else, definitely worths the shot. Try it out.
Elite's also good, or at least was when i left it.

I also vote for slim ics. I really like the idea about barebones rom with few apps but tons of settings. It's also fast, stable and updates have been good quality.

I will say this.......there are so many threads that ask this same question that to create another one is purely proof of one's inability to read, think, test and form ones own opinion....because that is all you get-...opinions, some people want loads of customization, some want loads of bells and whistles, some want it slim as possible .......but everyone is hoping that you.............LEARN TO READ.

There are recently 2 noobs that create all of these annoying threads. I can't get it.
I vote for Infinitum LBR (sadly not updated anymore)
And ICS333.
Because they both work smoothly. Infinitum had a nicer notification bar however.

Question about rom

I am new to this community and I have already rooted my device. Just a quick question though, to the people who have tested a lot of Roms, I have specific needs and hopefully you guys can recommend me a rom and kernel. I want a rom that has:
1.) Stable
2.) Less/No bugs
3.) Good battery performance
4.) Buttery smooth performance
Well, you can try SmoothROM, rasbeanjelly or ParanoidAndroid. I think these will suit you, but a little suggestion, next time try using the search function, don't be lazy.
yeh well although ROMs play a large part its largely dependent on the kernel as to how stable and fast a rom is.. also like Adinaky said use the search before starting a new thread :highfive:

Currently the best custom rom?

any ideas here guys? i really wanna flash a custom rom, but which one is currently the best?

It really depends what you're looking for in a ROM. There are a lot of different ROMs that are currently available depending on what you want. Whether it's a stock feel (AOSP ROMs), customizability (AOKP, PA), CM10 of course, and more. I highly doubt anyone has tried all of the ROMs that are out there so go into the dev sections and do some reading and see what you like! :good:
Really too subjective of a question to ask. "Best" is the ROM that contains everything you're looking for.
The best custom ROM for me is CM 10.1's nightly builds. The best custom Kernel for me is franco.Kernel. Both together = awesome (for me)
Thanks guys . I realise its a subjective view but thanks for replying
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Whatever ROM you choose, I second using Franco kernel :good:
I've been running a CM10.1 nightly with no custom kernel, its been pretty solid. I might have to check out Franco's kernel though, I'd like to try out undervolting for better battery life and heat at some point.

I've always understood this, but never really knew where to look. Is there some place that has a list of all the kernels and ROM projects and what their goals are. User reviews would be pretty handy as well.
As others have stated, this is very subjective. For example, I'd recommend AOKP. Not because it's the best per se, but because it's the one I'm using and I'm quite happy with it.

There is a list here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2003731
But you will have to read up a little on each one for specific features, bugs, and user reviews. Many ROMs with lots of features sound great but in practice aren't the most stable. Most bugs get ironed out in time by our great dev's, but its something to consider. When in doubt, flash & check it out!
For the record I use schnip's AOSP ROM w/ Tablet UI + Franco.kernel = clean, fast ROM with tablet interface. Can't ask for much more.

Hey I was considering using this combo and I just wanted to know if the native OTG support still functions after you flash the franco.kernel?

I honestly couldn't tell you since I don't own an OTG cable but you can flash franco's kernel and test it. If it doesn't work just reflash the ROM (without wiping) and you'll revert to the original kernel without losing any of your apps and data.

Seems to be by far the best kernel for dealing with the throttling issue that exists with our device so far...
Installed aokp . loving it.

At this point, I've gotta give it to AOKP. Lots of customizability and very smooth and quick. Rotating 180 degrees has no noticeable lag for me.
Paranoid Android is one of my all time favs in order to maximize your tablet space by altering app DPIs etc (not that you need to with a tablet this large). MMuzzy's ROM is a nice AOSP replacement which is what I'm on currently. As far as kernels go, it's really up to personal preference. I'm on KTManta (ktoonservative) and it flies though sometimes I get the lockscreen (black) of death - not waking up from lockscreen. I bought Franco's app ages ago before I got a tablet and can vouch that he also builds a strong/stable kernel.

[Q] Best ROM for N10

Hi all
I have just rooted my N10 and would like to know which is the best ROM out there to flash it.
There are too many in the development section, i don't know which one to choose actually...
The most important criteria for me is that the ROM is constantly updated by the developer and when you update, it will not have to do a complete wipe (losing all data). Something good also will be its ability for customization and long battery life.
thanks guys

I'd recommend you AOKP PUB or PARANOIDANDROID. Look for them, there are a couple different thread for each one (2 for PA and like 4 for AOKP).
I'd recommend Rasbeanjelly. Smooth, fast, constantly updated, you dont have to complete wipe to upgrade, not bloated, and with trinity kernel makes a really excellent performing rom with great battery life. Extremely stable too!
For lots of customization AOKP PUB.
"Best" depends on what you really want. Rasbeanjelly is nice performance-wise and themed, but lacks customization found in other ROM's. I've heard that PARANOIDANDROID is relatively slower, but offers customization and DPI stuff. AOKP and CM are nice.
Rasbeanjelly is my ROM of choice.
:crying:Sounds that there are lack of pure and nice roms for N10.
I have Shiny Rom in my Maguro, best thing ever and super clean, just like stock. I want something like it to my N10, PA is buggy and CM has lotta crap. Still looking but if someone know a related rom that looks like Shiny i will appreciate a lot!
Hi,
Please, Best ROMs threads are not allowed in XDA. The best ROM is discovered by you, by trying them and checking if one suits your needs.

Nervermind, I figured out my own question
OK. Firstly everyone tends to get slightly different results from ROMs. It depends on individual set ups. It doesn't make for easy comparisons.
Secondly all our devs. Put in a lot of work in their own time and are kind enough to share. People have lives away from XDA, so regular updates depends on a lot of different things.
Thirdly we don't allow comparisons on xda. For the above and also as it can cause bad feelings and arguments.
Thread closed.
I can only advise you try a few different ROMs for yourself and see what you prefer. It's half of the fun of xda.
