Bad replacement niki? - Touch Dual, MDA Touch Plus General

I had sent a phone in for repair, which was then said to be unrepairable and so I was given a replacement niki (however the replacement was a refurbished one).
Its only been a week or so but I have had major problems with calls. Most of the time I cant make or receive calls even though the signal bar has two or three bars. The phone says its dialing but it doesnt and ends the call automatically. If I ring my phone it goes straight to voicemail! Note that I said "most of the time" because my phone calls do go through soemtimes but thats like once every 20 or so tries or if I make a phone call immediately after a soft reset or just get lucky!
The other functions of the phone work fine. I have done a hard reset thinking it was something I installed but the problem is still there. Done another 4 hard resets (each time trying something different like taking the battery out before the custom orange stuff is installed) but with no change.
I did a search and came across another thread but it wasnt really solved and blamed it on S2U2. Obviously S2U2 cant be the cause for me since the problem is there even after a hard reset. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-393077.html and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=387615)
Im thinking it could be that the radio version is old (since it is a refurbed version) and also I remember reading about poor signals some time ago which was solved by changing the radio version (and is also probably why I didnt have this problem with my original niki).
Note: I have also tried the sim in another normal phone (samsung e900) and it worked fine so this is definately a problem with the touch dual.
A little bit of info:
Im with orange in the Uk,
the ROM version is 1.31.61.10 with a ROM date 10/30/07
and the Radio version is 1.58.16.27.
(Also...I havent done a radio update because I am still under warranty but I would like to know if it could be causing the problem or if it is a hardware problem).
Thanks for reading this long post (didnt think it would turn out so long, lol), but ANY help or advice will be appreciated.

well it sounds like a bad signal, so unless you want to unlock yor phone and try the modded sedna radio (best) id just send it back and complain loudly

MDA Vario - Worst phone ever or just needs flashing??

Hi all,
After spending 2 days with my vario my dreams of a half-decent smartphone are shattered.
I've got a C500 which hasnt really caused me any problems in over a year, now 2 days after having a vario i'm almost pulling my hair out.. can this phone possibly have been released in such a bad state or is it just mine?
For starters it crashes, not now and then, but like it's a hobby of the vario's, i dont think i can leave it for an hour, come back and find it hasn't hung in some form.
Sometimes i have to do a soft reset, sometimes, i can press the power button, get the screen to light up but can't do anything. Sometimes I get icons but when I click them i'm told the shortcut doesnt exist.
Ooh another thing it seems to like doing is randomly going into flight mode, and one really good crash was when i called it and the source phone could hear the ringing but the vario was just sitting there doing nothing.
So is it just mine or is this the most unstable phone the UK has ever seen? Is it worth me asking for a replacement, or just flashing the k-jam/qtek rom over the t-mobile one? Is there a way to backup my t-mobile rom and flash it back should i find the qtek/kjam rom does the same?
I've tried hard-resetting then cancelling all the t-mobile gubbins that loads from extended rom, but that didnt make any diference.
Any advice gratefully appreciated
Thanks
Personally, I'd say get T-Mobile to replace it! Unless you've installed a buggy piece of 3rd party software (but if you did, you wouldn't on here complaining about the phone you'd be complaining about the software, right?).
I also have an MDA Vario. I haven't touched the Extended_ROM (was going to, had a look and decided it was running fine so don't mess with it).
It's solid as a rock. As per a thread on howardforums asking how many times per day have I soft-resetted the phone and my answer was an average of zero.
I hard reset it on the day I bought it (after installing GPRS Monitor which knackers the backlight turning back on after sleep) and took the battery out after T-Mobile decided to disconnect me from their network (at their support line's request).
Anyway, it's on 24/7, never needs a reset of any kind, gets mobile emails via ActiveSync and is generally a wonderful piece of kit!
List what apps you've installed (even if they're T-Mobile supplied ones from CD) since buying the phone as there may be something buggy there. If not, definitely get T-mobile to replace it as it's certainly not a crap model (mine is absolutely fantastic).
Thanks Andy,
I've literally not installed anything, i'm just about to install pocketcommander but that will be the first thing i've actually installed. I've hard reset the phone this morning and it's already hung once on me (
I'll give tmob a call and see if they can send me another out today or something
Yeah, then you've definitely got a knackered phone. They should replace it (how long have you had it) without problems.
Hope you enjoy the replacement, they really are a great bit of kit
Well just had my first ever dealings with tmobile supoprt and it's as bad as the phone
They say because my contract/phone is only 3 days old i need to go back to the people i bought the phone off to get a replacement, problem is they'l want me to send the whole boxed thing uip and all the box etc is at home since i work away during the week
That's got to be faulty, like others have said.
WHen I bought mine, (T-Mobile shop in Leeds), I was told that if it was faulty within the first 28 days, there'd be a straight replacement issued immediately.
Don't accept anything less.
For what it's worth, I always try to be exceptionally pleasant when returning things rather than going in "all guns blazing"; it gets results a lot more often than the "I know my rights" approach. Of course, when it all comes down to it, the "i know my rights" approach might be necessary, but hopefully it shouldn't be.
The phone is superb, so stick with it even tho it is a bit of hassle for you.
good luck!
hi there no problems with my vario either. seems to work fine. no soft/ hard resets needed so far. have had it for 10 days. only thing is after the xteended rom instals there is a file called canned text in words which opens up in a crazy language. does not go on hard resets. but does not cause a problem either. any ideas on what this file is. have othar vario users noticed this file. please help.

may not be relevant to your problem, but if skype is installed on yours from the hard reset install, it may be worth removing, on the k-jam as soon as i removed skype, reseting stopped happening

Moaning Groaning Phoning

Hi Folks,
I was unlucky/ lucky enough to smash my Hermes in to bits the other day.
Insurance stumped up the cost of a spanking new Vario II from the T-Mobile shop the same afternoon.
It came back with the original ROM 1.21.110.3, Radio 1.16.00.00.
I have a problem (Duh! otherwise I wouldn't be posting)....
Every time I receive an incoming call when I'm on the phone, I press answer to pick it up, (thereby putting Caller 1 on hold normally), Caller 1 goes on hold, and phone freezes, Kupput!
Bizarre huh!
2nd time round, I thought, I'd ignore the call, press the button, some bloody thing!
Now I have to let the call ring off to answer phone if I'm on the other line.
I also seem to have to reboot the old phone rather a lot (3 times a day).
Was this a dodgy ROM, or do you think it's hardware related?
The only reason I'm reluctant to upgrade the ROM is that if it's hardware I can just take it back to the shop.
Many thanks in advance,
Andy
Your title sounds like a bad porno
Anyways, you can try a new ROM and if it turns out to be hardware, you can downgrade to the stock ROM/radio.
I think its the ROM as mines still stock rom and i have Noticed that, some times it works but most of the time it hangs, when i do switch to the other incoming call it seems to cut the other person off and not hold them, but that could be me doing it wrong lol
normally i just leave the other incoming call "ringing" then they can leave a voice message and i can ring them back, would rather do that than lose both call's
maybe someone with a non stock rom could help out with this one and post if it does the same on theirs or not
If I were you I would take it back to the shop and get it exchanged now. If its a hardware problem you are not likely to be unlucky enough to get 2 phones with the same hardware problem. This way you are reasonbly safe.
If you find that the second phone also has the same issue you can then install a different rom and see how you go. Easier to do it this way than to go through the pain of reversing roms just to send the kit back.
What you haven't said is whether this is a WM5 or WM6. If WM5 I had hellish problems with my Tytn when I first got it with freezing problems, etc. I was on the brink of getting a sledgehammer out and smashing it to bits when I discovered this website. Since I moved to WM6, upgraded my radio, and used all the various hints and tips e.g. the one around activesync, life has been much easier.
Hope you get it sorted.

Can anyone clarify what a hard reset really does?

OK, I know that may look like a dumb question (and maybe it is!!!)
I have just unlocked my Vario 2 using the "Pof" method with both Sim and SuperCID.
Problem is, my phone needs to be sent back (long story - but basically I am getting a replacement Vario 3). Now obviously I am concerned they will tell me "sorry youve been playing with your phone sonny - its no longer under warrenty", so need to get it back to factory settings if I can.
I appreciate a hard reset will basically wipe any files I have, contacts and settings etc, but will this remove the unlocks that have been done? ie It really does go back to factory settings - or do these unlocks stay on there?
I have been searching the forum and WIKI, but not found the solution. I did think I would need to install a T-Mobile Rom - but all I could find was a hungarian version - which whilst in English, would probably look worse than as I currently have it!
Any help appreciated.
Thanks
EDIT:
For the record, if it makes any difference:
ROM Version 1.21.110.3
Rom Date 06/19/06
Radio version 1.16.00.00
Herm300 IPL-1.01
SPL 1.40.0lipro
a hard reset simply formats the internal drive on the phone and resets it to the factory settings.
generally t mobile wont bother looking at things like that, i unlocked my vario, dropped it, it smashed, they just replaced it after trying to repair it.
A few people have flashed new roms and bricked it, sent it back, tmobile are none the wiser, they are probably unaware people to this to their handsets!
we are all just stupid customers as far as they are concerned!
personally i wouldnt worry about it!

OK thanks for that. So I assume a hard reset will not over write anything regarding the bootloader radio change and unlocks? I appreciated that it resets the OS - hence the question.
I agree that they probably wouldnt in most cases look into the phone and check, but they have put a note on my account about "charging if not found faulty".
The problem I have been getting is missing calls - even if I am in a strong signal area. I actually work at Waterloo Railway station - and I would doubt too many places would get a better signal! An incoming call is made, my phone doesnt ring and the caller gets a single ring, then nothing. From what I can now gather, this may be to do with the cell shaking hands but not really being connected. ie the phone/cell are duping each other. This appears to be a 3G issue (so is probably likely to still be there on exchange.) Now the silly thing I have noticed; the phone seemed fine until I got web'n'walk put back on and the problem happens once I have been online. Strangely at the moment, I dont think the problem is persisiting (ie Im not aware of missing calls - though of course thats difficult to quantify unless someone tells me!)
Anyway - I have a feeling they will be looking more into this phone as this replacement will be my 5th! (The previous had similar problems with calls being made or incoming that would just fall over before being answered and the signal being completely lost when it was happening. Slightly different this time - but sound related!)
So will there be a way to put it back to being locked and the correct bootloader etc being shown?
Many thanks
I had the same problem with rejected and dropped calls, tmobile couldnt care less from what i learned or are unaware of the problem! try this
1. lock the phone to gsm only (this solved it pretty much straight away)
2) remove the voicemail from your account
3) If you are using gprs data, you will rarely get a phone call through, and by using it i mean looking at web pages or having programs update in the background.
Downgrading the bootloader is way above my head so i wouldnt like to advise.
As regard to relocking the phone to the network, i dont think thats possible, in any event, why would they check the simlock if the phone is having problems with calls!
If its your fifth handset, you should be looking at changing the model at least because thats ridiculous.
It sounds like a network issue rather than a handset problem!

Yeh, the problems on this phone didnt start until I began using the net again. They did suggest switching off 3G, but since I bought the phone specifically on the promise of a fast connection and HSPDA speeds, that really is an unacceptable solution! I appreciate that signal varies etc - but if a central location where I work isnt good enough, then T-Mobile really shouldnt be advertising themselves as a 3G network!
As it happens, voicemail was switched off on the account. It got put back on again a week ago - and sods law - things now seem to be working, though internet speeds are still very slow.

Dunno really. Its just a concern they will and then use it to wriggle out of an exchange!

When I phoned, I was just looking to get a repair, but it was them that offered a Vario 3 which I accepted. It was agreed for them to be sending the set to me (last Thursday) but all that arrived was a grey bag to send my old one back. I spoke with them at great length again last night and suggested a straight courier swap so I wasn't without a phone. They went through to their repair department, who have now flatly refused the phone change - despite it being agreed already!
Anyway I spoke to another manager who went through my "book" of notes and quoted the sale of goods act and merchandisable quality thing and he has agreed they really have to address this. He is phoning me back today and he did come across as helpful and reasonable. (The second one in 2 weeks - must be a record!!!)
I do agree though, that this issue is likely to be the network and not the phone. I would really love to use O2 as at work and home I get 100% coverage and never had any problems at all - but I ain't paying their data rates! Maybe 3 will be ok - but again, when I had them a few years back, at home they were dire so never bothered again. But one thing is pretty certain, in 5 months time, T-Mobile will be history unless they make amends in a big way and these problems become non existant.
Thanks for your help..... its appreciated.

Need help with Proximity Sensor Problem

I open a new thread because those already opened are quite dead... the subject is the proximity sensor on the HTC HD2... as i described in oter places this is the behaviour:
Upon receiving calls ALL works as it should
Sometimes when making a call:
1. dial a number
2. press talk
3. take the phone to my ear
4. the screen turns off
5. it starts ringing
6. THE SCREEN GOES ON
7. take the phone from my ear and put it back
8. the screen goes off
9. it answers on the other side
10. THE SCREEN GOES ON
11. take the phone from my ear and put it back
12. the screen goes off and all works well from now on on this call
I have at least a number that EVERYTIME when called does not acts like this... the proximity sensor does its job very well
I have at least one numbet that almost always did the steps described from 1to 12... only 4-5 times it didn't
If i get a busy tone the screen turns on... it will turn of if i do step 7
I've put back original rom and i have the same behaviour. I tried with clean roms and noting installed... still the same...
One time on a clean rom... I called a number that always did that and the first two calls were ok, after that it started again...
Now I'm using Hyper ROM 8.0 and I see that after step 6 if i keep the phone to my ear th screen will turn itself off after a sec or so... i cannot say right now if always...
Considering that this does not happens to many of us and it is not something permanent I think it can have something to do with the network... I don't know exactly what but this is my guess; like in the moments the screen turns on maybe the networks sends out a "signal" like the call would be over... I know it sounds weird but I don't know what else to think...
I even attached a poll to see who gets this behaviour...
So, to all the CHEFS out there... please help.... because HTC is not willing to... they're answer was not helping at all...
This is weird... I use netDrg's 2.5g ROM and I have no issue with the proximity sensor. Sometimes, when receiving a call, if I rotate the phone from portrait to landscape and then immediately take it to my ear, the screen doesn't turn off, but as soon as the display is back to portrait mode, it turns off. This isn't annoying at all, since I rarely pick up the phone and hold it in landscape to talk !
Maybe you should try a different ROM ? If you understand French well, netDrg's ROM is quite good, although it seems to me that the battery drains faster than with the stock ROM...
french is fine.. actually i would learn any language just to have this fixed... i know about landscape and sensor not working... but it is not the case here
it happens so aleatory... i would think it is a hardware issue... BUT i have one number and with it, this NEVER happened
i had almost all the cleanex suite... touch-x, energy and others... i really can't remeber if this happend since the first day i bought it... i've put back the stock rom downloaded from htc and still the same...
ok... i've made like 15-20 calls to the same number and all worked as it should... than all of a sudden it started to do what i've described in first post... just like this... i'm starting to hate this phone...
it looks like i'm not the only one with this issue... how you guys got it solved?..
just a thought... what triggers the screen on on this phone... i know that some apps open the screen... maybe there is a registry tweak to keep the screen off if proximity detected... this should be done automaticly i know... the fact is that the proximity sensor works...
uhm, just to point it out, you should edit your post instead of posting 4 messages in a row in the same thread
Anyway, this is the exact same problem I noticed reported in another thread, and I didn't have it, I mostly receive and rarely call, yet the few times I called I don't seem to remember such problems, will try and remember to test with my other mobile when I get back home.
today i went back to default rom that came with my phone...
RUU_Leo_HTC_WWE_EastEurope_1.48.479.1_Radio_Signed_15.28.50.07U_2.05.51.05_2_Ship
and still it does the same
i HSPL again and than put
RUU_Leo_HTC_WWE_1.66.405.2_Radio_Signed_15.30.50.07U_2.06.51.07_Ship
the same thing
if I call my home landline it works perfectly... if i call one of the numbers i was telling you about it acts like described in post #1
one other thing i discovered though... with the original roms there is a courtain over the buttons on the phone canvas... this not only blocks aditional buttons on the screen but also blocks the top taskbar... wich is a goos thing
anyway for a 4-500 euros phone this thing i'm having shouldn't happen...
still searching... i've seens something with Rilphone.dll... can this make a difference?
LE: Rilphone.dll broke thephone module... hard reset...
Same here ccezar
I only realised in the last couple of weeks that I've hung up on people a few times & sometimes I've tried making the same call on the spot like 5 times in a row & the line has been cut off before it evens rings, which brings me to say that different behaviours on different calling numbers is just a coincidence.
Sort of experimenting at the moment, I think that when I dial, & put the phone to my ear slowly it works. i can see the screen turn off, & the call goes smoothly. Although after I've hung up sometimes the comm manager or arkswitch is on my screen, which only mean that the taskbar is still active...
I almost thought that the screen may have been switching off but the touch function was still there at least for a few more seconds...
There are hundreds(thousands maybe) of us HD2 owners out there, so my feeling is that if there ain't many complaints, it may aswell be a faulty device.
Then again I wonder if that phone canvs slider would make a diference? Anyone know if there's cab for this?
What radio you using
The more I think about it the more I'm convinced that the 2.10.... radios is the culprit for me.
I just flashed my old 2.07.50.27_2 radio, will test for a day or so and see what happens.
If your on a 2.10.50.. radio urself or anyone with the same prob and radio, can I suggest you downgrade to a 2.07 or 2.08/ or 2.09 for euros?
i thought also that it is radio raleted... i tried other radios and still the same...
anyway i don't think it is hardware related... because i have at least one number that never ever got this behaviour... and neither when calling landlines... it is only on some numbers on mobile networks... and i have numbers that get this behaviour only from time to time...
so... how does the proximity sensor works?... when in a call (there is a reg key that appears upon making a call and says activecallcount=1) the proximity sensor activates... if something in the way it turns the screen off... if the call ends the proximity sensor is deactivated... this is where i dont have exact facts... like if i keep the phone to my ear if it will remain with the screen off or once the call ended the screen goes on... i'd go for the second one...
so... my belief is that is has to do with network parameters... you make the call and on steps 5 and 9 from first post i think the phone belives that the call is over... and i guess the network sends a signal that triggers that... i know it sounds like a fairytale...
now i will try to find a sim card from another mobile operator and see if it does the same... i already tried with another seem from my operator and there is no change... maybe if i try a different sim type (there are simple and 3G sims - i have a simple one)
i'll keep digging... anyway... at least one mobile number and all landlines numbers this NEVER HAPPENED...
well that just makes sense ccezar. I'll do the same over the weekend & see what happens.
with another providers sim card that is.
Hey when say you tried with nothing installed, was cookie's hometab on the rom? just a thought
i don't think so... because i also tried with a stock original rom...
LE: i just realized that my phone is network locked... how can i unlock it?

I couldn't tell ya, I can suggest that if you're on a contract your paying for the phone anyway, so you should be able to ring the phone op & ask them for the codes. Where I am, the only time I couldn't have it unlocked is if it was pre paid & less than 12 months old.
after long debates that's the conclusion of HTC
The only option that is left now is to send the device to the Repair Centre so the engineers could examine it. Your device is still under the warranty. But after the diagnosis the engineers will determine whether the fault of the unit is due to misusage, accidental damage or a manufactured fault. [bug]should I return my device to htc?

Hello all !!
I have a problem with my Leo, seen several times on the forum, but with a little thing more.
so,
_it freeze up often (with battery drainage, full when i go to sleep and shut off when wake up)
_soft reset alone
_i must do many (and many) soft reset when it freeze up, because it freeze on start up.
_and when it's happened, the part below the battery is hot!!
i've test many rom, with task29 whenever and hard reset after flash, and on every 1st start up, freeze...
Do you know this problem?
thank you.
"edit"I also tried to remove the micro sd is the same thing.
nobody has the part below the battery hot?
is it the ram or processor? (or both lol)
if possible at all, just get a replacement while you still can.
I have the same problems more or less. More specifically it freezes randomly ONLY when using the internet (on GPRS, 3G, I havent tried it in wifi), and when it does it gets hot on the part under the battery (really, what part is there?).
Anyway, I send it to the service (couldn't get a replacement), and they checked it but they found no problems
Oh, and i have tried e v e r y t h i n g I could in order to find out why that happens. With SD, whithout SD, Stock Rom, Custom Rom, ,Different Radios, Nothing Installed, you name it, but the problem is there. I am not sure though if I can connect the problem to my SIM card, or the gsm network in my area (doubt it though since I was using my old TP2 flawlessly), but I do not have the knowledge to even guess if that could be the possible reason of the problem.
HTC will ask you to use the stock rom and try if you still get the problem , if so, then your phone might be a defective one. go to HTC and ask for a replacement.
flash stock spl and rom and go for htc ,if hard reset didnot solve these issues then it is a defective device
thank you,
my leo is SFR branded, so I must go through them and with SFR rom.
to get a replacement, it will be hardly.
i'll try on thursday, when i come back home.
thank you very much.
If you've had it more than 7 days (including the time it took to get to you if you ordered it from the SFR website) they won't give you a new one... They'll send it off to be repaired which can take up to 14 days. I know... I had to do it twice in the first month until they finally fixed my microphone problem...
to see after the repair.
thanks at all!
HI, after 2 repairs,i finally have my hd2 !!
1st time, software uptdate...so nothing
2nd time they changed the motherboard.
Test for 2 days before change the rom lol
