Best settings for CorePlayer? - Mogul, XV6800 General

I am trying to get the best video using CorePlayer, mostly for YouTube now. I will start watching DVD's in the near future as well.
What are people seeing as good settings?

after installing coreplayer set the buffer size to 2400 and the preload underrun to 70 and that should give you perfect playback

Where are these settings? I just bought and installed the latest CorePlayer for Windows Mobile (1.2.5 build 4506 for ARM) and I don't see these settings anywhere under Options or Preferences.

Menu, Tools, Preferenfes - then click Select Page and pick what you want to adjust. There are some other pages that people recommend settings, but I haven't found one that really sticks out yet.

Thanks, Ryan; I never would have found it--"Select Page"--that's a new one on me.
"Preload at underrun" is located on the Buffering page. Interestingly, both the buffer and the preload at underrun came preset to the values that Dominican706 recommended.

i to would like to know if there are any optimal settings for watching .avi on my mogul in TCMP. i looks very nice with stock settings and for the most part plays well but it does tend to skip every now and then. i was watching a file on my SD card if that makes a differnce

Please, anybody knows what Microdrive mode does from the Buffering page in CorePlayer?

Video Settings on HTC HD

I see several other threads on this subject, but all go into conversations on the use of third-party conversion software. I use a Sony Vegas Pro 8 video editing software which can convert to any format/settings (and incidentally costs more than the HTC device itself).
What I am looking for is the best video settings as for:
1: type (wmv, mp4, etc)
2: codec
3: bitrate
4: size
5: framerate
I’m trying differing settings at random, but as of yet haven’t resulting in a better video than was on my 2003 Palm T3. If I find a good fit I’ll post it, but would be interested to see if anyone has found the best settings mix. HTC tech support are no help and have little to no understanding of video formats.

It's what I use and it works great!
Willy1973 that works much better, thanks. Still some intermittent stuttering, but I suppose thats down to so much overhead in WM6.
1500 is too much. Set 1000 and it wont lag ever.
^ I've used "super" for a long time, once you get the settings right, it's very good. However, my Touch HD wont play the videos i converted to my atom life.
Also even with the video bitrate set to 600 there is still some stuttering. (when using the default "video player". As of yet I've not been able to make WMP find any of the mp4 videos on my memory card, and the TF3D album only finds videos stored on the actual device itself.
The Blackstone video encoding GUI ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=467112 ) is neat and handy - especially if you just want to dump a few videos in and leave it running overnight - i've found it to be a bit slower than super, but there isnt much in it tbh.
I've not installed coreplayer yet -going to give that a try now, and see if that helps with the playback issues I'm having. But even so it would be nice to have the option of using WMP - if ayone has any ideas as to why it isnt finding the videos on my memory card? I've tried putting the vids in the main directory, and also tried creating a folder on the memory card called "video". Neither has worked yet.

WMP has a "open file.." menu item, for single files, in the library.
Album should find your memcard, press the left dialog-button, while in album..

Thanks for that, I'm now able to locate the memory card and videos located on it via the "album"... i was only seeing the previews in the photo and video tab. Can now locate all!
With WMP I can locate single files... but cant understand why they're not showing up in the library. Even after being played via WMP. (I should add, it has no problem locating music files, just video)
Both these solutions seems to have eliminated the stuttering I was getting before.
The reason i like WMP so much is that when one video is finnished it moves to the next rather than stopping completely.

I'm experimenting with Catalyst DVD Converter which I found in another thread and am unable to completely eliminate that pesky frame dropping every few seconds on my HD. Here's what's working best so far
1: .avi
2: DIVX5
3: 500
4: 400x240 (autocropped by catalyst dvd to fill the screen, which I really like!)
5: 30
Note: I use CorePlayer to play the videos. One thing I've noticed is that although the mpeg4 and h.264 files do play ok on win media player mobile, mpeg4 files are much larger that divx, and h.264 (also .mp4 extension) take 2-3 time longer to encode to the device. I've not had good luck playing 800x480 files as they shudder so badly because there's 4 times as much info for the HD to process, and the 400x240 files play really nicely. I use Dutty's 1.5 rom with tnyynt's sd card tuneup cab, which I think is already incorporated into the rom???
Hope this helps... --Jesse
I've now disovered that WMP is finding my MP4 files, but for some reason it's adding them to my music library rather than to my video library?
Is there an option somewhere to tell it that .mp4 extentions are video?

With DVD Catalyst 3 (which I presume is the same) I use the default settings
1: .mp4
2: h264_ipod_hq
3: 600
4: 800 x 480
5: 30
I play them back with the Album player, (if you just use your file explorer to find the file and click on it, it will play in Album player by default) and get totally stutter free video. I was particularly impressed by the action seens in Tropic Thunder and Star Wars, where I was expecting to see frames dropped. But there weren't any!!
I have converted at least 10 movies, some from DVD, and some from .avi's. It auto scans from either start up or insertion in your player then finds the correct file from all the .vobs etc. With .avi's, you can just drag and drop.
When using the autoscan for DVD's, it's worth checking preview within Catalyst to make sure it has picked the correct language version, or indeed if it needs subtitiles for a foriegn movie.
I have tried about 5 different programs now for conversion and have found this to be far and away the best. I have now put my money where my mouth is and purchased it. (For those that haven't tried, it is available on a 7 day trial)
Top notch Video on the HD that is well worth comparing with your mates' IPod at last.

CorePlayer stutters on video playback - HTC Album not?

Hello, I'm new @ xda-developers and got my touch hd last week.
While playing around with different video-encoding-settings to get optimal results I found the "HTC Touch HD Video Converter" in this forum.
I used it (v. 1.18) to encode a video from a 1080p source file.
I chose "HD input" and maximum resolution "WVGA 800x480".
My "problem" now as follows:
Using CorePlayer 1.30 results in heavy-stuttering video-playback whereas the HTC Album plays it very smooth, even in fast-motion scenes.
I already played around with some settings in the CorePlayer preferences menu but I can't make the video run as smooth as it runs in HTC album.
The "tnyynt SD TuneUP.cab" is already installed by the way.
I want to make CorePlayer work as intended Does anybody have an idea what I could do in order to solve this video-playback-stuttering?
Thank you for possible answers
This is already known. WMP (or HTC album) have some hardware acceleration, whereas CorePlayer doesn't provide this yet. Future releases of CorePlayer are supposed to have the hardware acceleration as well.
Okay, thanks a lot
Reduce buffer size
i've solve this problem via reducing buffer size:
Menu --> Tools -->Preferences --> Select Page -->Buffering
my new settings are:
~ Normal Buffer size 1184 KB
~ Preload at underrun 70.0 %
~ Preload for audio 0 KB
but this aajustment is for an internet radio, let me know if it has helped to solve your problem please!
Is there still no hardware support in CorePlayer ?

Nothing of this value change speed of video
I experience a constant lag (every 5 minutes) when listening to MP3, do you think change the settings of buffering can help?
Those settigns worked perfectly for my Diamond 2! First time a full .avi worked smoothly! thanks!

I've had this when the built in equaliser is enabled. I solved it by not using the built in equaliser but instead using Audio Booster.
I have no improvements with those settings :S Its the same but it isn't bad.
But if i see the benchmark the video is much smoother than playing it.
Edit: maybe a bit faster after opening a new video

Do you know the REG setting for this so that i dont have to set this over and over again when I flash a new rom?
No REG, settings is located in the config.xml in the Application Data folder...
//Nik
no difference
Hi, I see no difference or at least no discernable one, however I am using stock latest rom, i reencode all video and use wmp as hardware encoding is enabled through wmp api.The way you can play a decent quality with a decent bit rate 500 and above whereas coreplayer will struggle to play anything smoothly above 150.
An example. download any recent 350 lost episode and load and play it in coreplayer, this will be around 620x352 at a bitrate of 60-120 depending on the download. It will play and not too badly but will skip and freeze now and again. Reenode it using Mp4ForHD v2.6 using a higher bit rate and 800x640 res (phone standard res) and it will play perfectly in WMP even though you are using a higher res and bitrate as the hardware encoding is ised. There is no real need for coreplayer as long as you can be bothered re-enocding, if you cannot then you will have to put up skipping video.
coreplayer is greate for music and low res video as it has a lot of codec support however, A good purchase with this in mind.
WOW!!! It works on my Raphael..

For touch HD, just tick "Disable AVC Deblocking" at advanced tab, "soft drop tolerance" to 0.3 sec, and let other settings defaults. Enjoy your hardware-like video player.
P.S: Other settings must be default. I tried with the settings at the first post, just got worse.
512kb of video buffer is pretty enough, and I couldnt understand why no audio buffer and higher video buffer, since I have got even better results wih 256kb video buffer and 64 audio buffer.

Hi, can someone post the default buffer settings, I have mucked about so much with them I have forgotten what they are. Note however that the soft drop change seems to be produce the best overall results in that you get the longest amout of smooth play in between frame drops and minor freezes. This is going to be different though depending on what we are playing. I wonder when discussing issues like this we should all agree on a movie or TV episode we can all download and then we are all reading from the same book. It should also be noted we are all probably using different roms which also adds another layer of complexity to it. I am currently using GRIDEVO 1.7B based on 28011 os, those that claim to have smooth playback, what rom are you on and what are you watching, ie whats the bit rate, size of file, codec used and image size.

feck it
feck it, i'm going to get a HD2, these problems will go away then, my contract is up soon.

Coreplayer 1.3.6 Judder - stock ROM 1.48 (SOLVED)

I've done a search and read many posts about coreplayer performance on the HD2. Most have no problems but some do and i'm one of them.
I have no problem playing the files using these settings from member Shasarak (thanks mate):
Options/Video and activate Dither, then "smooth zoom always" rather than "smooth zoom 50%". You will get substantially better performance if you then go into the DirectDraw settings page, choose "YUY2" as your overlay format, leave "use device stretching" checked, and uncheck the other two boxes.
I have tried all other settings and combinations but i agree the above gives the best performance.
However, i am still experiencing occassional judder and it's annoying me.
1). would upgrading to stock ROM 1.66 make a difference?
2). is there ANYTHING else i can do to stop the judder? i've already tried disabling background tasks, wifi etc
3). The audio is also very slightly out of sync, it's delayed, it's minor but i notice it. It happens on all videos, they are all .avi I've not seen anyone complain of this before.
Thanks
With regards to uadio sync:
Menu --> Tools --> Settings
Select the 'Advanced' page
Manual A/V offset let's you adjust the audio sync
The judder is most likely due to the format the videos are encoded in just eating too much CPU. How do you encode them?

I don't encode them, just downloaded movies in the common divx/xvid format. I played movies on my old N96but re-encoded them to mp4 as it didn't play avi and i never tried coreplayer on it.
Perhaps i should try re-encoding, but don't see why this phone couldn't handle a standard 700mb divx avi.

cheers mate, you are the man! putting a -0.300 has made it much better, not sure why it would be out like that on all movies? I'm very happy with that What do the other 2 settings do - soft drop tolerance & hard drop tolerance?
now just to fix the juddering.
I've found, and i think someone else suggested this in another thread, that if you pause it for a moment it sorts itself out. Would rather not have to do that but i don't see a way around it

The standard ~1h30 700MB divx movies I've tried to play all worked nicely. But sorter ones of the same size (meaning more bitrate) could start being too much load. Just try and do a benchmark in coreplayer with a video that causes problems, if you have less than about 150% average playing speed you might start getting drops.
It may help to put the phone in "Airplane Mode"; if it's checking for email messages in the background while playing it will judder like crazy. Use the task manager to kill off any other running applications as well....
I come to the conclusion that this phone just can not handle playing divx/xvid in avi very well, and i'm not sure why it can't.
I have gone back to my old ways of converting the video to mp4 using winavi mp4 converter, this also cures the problem of any files that have ac3 audio as it converts that as well.
On my 8 year old computer it would take 30 mins to convert a 700mb film, i have since bought a quad core Dell running 64 bit windows 7 and it converts in less than 10 mins!!
Smooth as butter now but a shame i have to go back to doing this. But at least the files will play in coreplayer, windows media and htc's player so plenty of choice
If anyone wants the settings i use for winavi mp4 converter then just ask away. It's not free but mine was if you get what i mean
EDIT:
I HAVE FOUND THE REAL PROBLEM, IT'S MY COREPLAYER! IT STARTED STUTTERING THE MP4 FILE THIS MORNING, WHEN I SWITCHED TO WINDOWS MEDIA OR HTC PLAYER IT WAS FINE 9OBVIOUSLY COULDN'T DO THIS BEFORE AS NEITHER OF THOSE PLAYERS SUPPORT AVI)
I JUST TRIED COREPLAYER AGAIN AND IT'S PLAYINNG THE SAME MP4 FILE FINE NOW, MUST BE SOMETHING WRONG WITH MY COREPLAYER, WILL GET ANOTHER VERSION.
WHAT A DRAMA AND SORRY FOR BORING YOU ALL WITH IT LOL

Coreplayer Configuration

Since changing my Rom and upgrading to coreplayer 1.3.6 the video quality has degraded so that now even media player is better.
When watching a video, sometimes the video freezes, but the audio carries on. I usually change from fullscreen to normal mode and back to full screen and the video carries on as normal
I used to be able to read the text in a video, its now degraded and barely legible. I checked the video in media player and it looks better.
I was going to post this query in the coreplayer forums, but I noticed how many of the treads actually had replies.
I've tried googling for configuration settings, but all I found was HD2 config settings, some of those settings arent listed in my configuration.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to improve the quality of coreplayer video?

What was your coreplayer settings before you changed rom? If your settings worked before you changed rom then just set it to what it was before.
Anyways, my coreplayer settings are;
set everything to default then in tools-settings-advanced
tick disable avc deblocking filter
set soft drop tolerance to 1.000
set hard drop tolerance to 1.100
these configurations work best for me
I hope it solves your problem

Thanks for your reply.
My settings were probably default before I had to flash a new rom, it seemed to work fine, so I didnt muck around with them.
Just to confirm I have Coreplayer 1.3.6 build 7427.
I have Tools => Settings => Select Page where I can select VIDEO, BUFFER, etc. I dont have an advanced option.
I couldnt find any of the options you mentioned either.
Is there a way to reset the settings to default? I cant find any options.

The only way i know to set everything back to default is to install it again.
tools-settings-select page-advanced. you have to press select page then go to the advanced page
I have the same version coreplayer as you

Lol, you're right. Sorry.
I didnt realise that I was able to scroll that screen up.
I did some more searching and managed to find this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-481714.html
It had the following setting suggestions:
Htc Touch Hd
Select Page ---
BUFFERING:
Normal buffer size = 992 KB
Preload at underrun = 70.0 %
Preload for audio = 0 KB
Microdrive mode = checked
Microdriver buffer size = 16000 KB
Microdriver starts at 1472 KB
VIDEO:
Video output = QTv Display
Video quality = High
Smooth Zoom = On
Dither = Uncheck
ADVANCE:
Slow video memory = Check
I entered the above settings (except the ADVANCE).
On Testing I found that coreplayer played fullscreen video for 10 mins without a problem.
I havent tested the clarity yet (ie being able to read text), but will do so this evening
Thanks for your help.

If you read further down that thread, you can see that I also participated in that discussion. I believe it was barisahmet that suggested playing with some of the advanced settings. I have since stuck with the current settings that I mentioned above because it works best for me.
Glad to be of help!
I found coreplayer was still having problems. My audio wasnt syncing with video.
Despite mucking about with the settings some more, things didnt improve.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling to wipe the settings, but that didnt help.
I eventually found the settings were stored in Application Data\Coreplayer\Config.xml.
After renaming the file, things went back to default.
EDIT: Just thought I would add that this is also where coreplayer keeps the serial number. Really secure
If you're comfortable editting xml files a better option would be to delete everything between the <CONFIG></CONFIG> tags.
