hi, i am new to pocket pc in general.
could you guys that's been using your pda's please let me know what applications you guys recommend having on the pocket pc for my day to day usage. I have a Qtec S100 with 64Mb Memory.
For this I mean additional apps to download and install, but also apps that comes with pocket pc 2003 2nd edition that you recommend.
could you also state where you get these apps from.. i.e. download sites.
regards
bushmen
I pray that you days are much better than mine But here are some items.
I use Pocket Breeze to display appts and tasks on my Today screen.
I use PocketInformant to manage my calendar, etc as it find it offers much more than the built-in apps.
PocketZenPhone for different profiles (adjusts the sounds, screen, etc) by selecting an icon, or by Outlook calendar or even just by time.
ListPro. It is a list program on some major steriods. It is more a cross between a list program and a database. It is quite flexible, so I use it to keep track of things from a shopping list, to vehicle maintenance to PPC tips and software keys.
thanks harleyxlc,
this information is really valueble to me since I don't know anything about pda apps.
cheers

My apps on S100
http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=378063
On my S100 (clone of M500):
WisBar (or my preference, SmallMenuPlus) for task management
SpriteBackup for backups. Memaid for memory cleanup
PocketMusic or Mort Player for music
TextMaker for wordprocessing
Games - BustEm2, Flux, MorphGear emulator, SimCity, SprintRG, VectorBlaster, Elite
Films - BetaPlayer and Pocket TV listings
Art - PocketArtist and Resco Picture Viewer
Sound - Resco Sound Explorer (MP3 recording/dictaphone)
Internet - MultiIE (improves Internet Explorer), Newsbreak reader, PTVNCHi for VNC (using desktop over wireless)
Reference - Britanica or Columbia Encylcopedia, iSilo (I find it's the best ebook reader if you make your own - it rips a whole website and packs it down), Repligo (like PDF but more efficient), TomeRaider 3, and WordBook dictionary
Input - Calligrapher, JogButton, TouchKeyboard, Typango, BlimKeys
Systools- CETuner, Kilmist Regedit, Tweaks2k2.net, GSFinder (ESSENTIAL, get this first), Cabinst (likewise essential), PHM Tools (all are useful)
Travel - Rough Guide to London and Visual IT Tube (free at the mo because of bombs)
Phone - unforunately most diallers etc are very poor. the built in Intellidialer is about the best, but not great. See D9 dialler for an alternative. Also, you MUST install mamaich's dialler hack from http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=11120 to get some use out of the built in dialler (see towards the end of that thread for latest version).
I use buttonmax to redfine all my keys. It's not perfect, but best of the button definers. Also, use AE Button Plus to redefine your Volume Up/Down keys to Up/Down).
So set up is
SmallMenuPlus to change StartButton and for task management etc.
ButtonMax allows me to pop this up with the camera button.
AE ButtonPlus allows me to use vol up/down to navigate the menu.
TIP - if you don't have an external SD writer, get one. About £3 from ebuyer or ebay.
Then get a FAST 1gb card - i got mine from Moby Memory. Then you can "backup" 800mb divx films on to your SD card in about a minute; makes music and films very enjoyable on the go.
If you don't have a writer, get one. Then apply the Extended Rom Hack on XDA developers to get a fre 27mb of "storage" space on your phone.
Tip - install all programs onto "Storage Card" or "storage" to keep your phone efficient and fast. Use cabinst for this.
Registry hacks - see XDA developers forum.
PM me if you need any help.

I've got a 1gb card, and the extended rom hack.
Day to day I've got about 200mb of program files installed on the Card, 1 film ("Primer") and 2 episodes of Futarama.
My Storage (extended rom) is used to hold any apps that will use the internet. I can spop out my 1gb card and put in the ebuyer Wifi card when i want to go online, and still have access to those apps. I shrink my "storage" space down to about 9mb to give my PocketPC as much memory as possible "control > system >memory"
On my 1gb card I've got about 20mb of free space. Every so often I use sprite backup to do a backup of my PPC and Storage space. I make this an executable file, so that God forbid I hard reset, the whole thing can be restored on the go without any additional software.
Every so often I make a backup of my 1gb card onto my PC desktop, so God forbid I lose my phone, I've still got everything backed up.
This routine is very easy, and works for me (takes 3minutes per backup). I won't preach, but man it took a long time to get my PPC working to my taste. I haven't had a PPC since the original IPAQ (which the GF still uses for bubblets!). Since then I've had SPV, SPV E100, Sony P900 and finally the Magician. I like the magician, but it needs to be more 1 handed.
I tried sooo many programs before settling on this set; I've hacked the registry and written my own Today plugin for measuring temperature, day/date, count audio notes and notes saved on Storage Card and PPC.
I use SmallMenu Plus to replace my start menu and task manager, and I use ProgramMenu assigned to my contacts button to bring up essential phone apps - so I can use the phone with one thumb comfortably to do essential stuff (programmenu) , and one hand slightly less comfortably to bring up smallmenu/taskmanagement etc. It sounds complicated but it's near perfect in operation, finally.
Hence - I backup regularly! It took so long to get the PPC working spiffy, I don't want to FUBAR it!
V
PS I also use 1-pass to lock my PPC every 15 minutes. I've resource edited the program to use my own background, so everything works with my very simple theme. I'll post screenshots some time...
How did you make your backup and exeacutable?
Sprite Backup > Options > General Backup Options > Create Self-restoring backup files.
V
duh lol i looked over that thankz alot for pointing that out
day to day apps
hi,
thanks for all the people that have posted what they're using. I will definately look through the lists and see what i can come up with.
i am currently struggeling with my latest 2gb sd card from ADATA. I can not get my pocket pc to recognise the card.... getting sooo frustrated.
as soon as i can get that working, i can upgrade the rom.. install apps and run the hacks....
if anyone else has more to post on these topics, please do so.
take care

Hi Guys,
This post is a little overdue in that I lost my password to login here, but have been reading the forum religiously daily.
Anyways, after waiting and waiting, I still feel like the fool with the new device that can't run one single Medical app.
I'm talking about Skyscape and the like.
None of the WM2003 Apps are upward compatible.
Styletap doesn't install the .pdbs of my older Apps.
Essentially I saw one post earlier touting Epocrates may work, but thats just one app.
So at times, I miss my 6315 Ipaq for this functionality, but am stalling on downgrading to using 2 PDAs for this purpose.
Anyone care to share misery some company on this topic,
OR
have any insight into a possible solution?
Thanks
hi
though some of the apps dont run (not wm5 compatible) but i have 4 products off skyscape that work perfectly... these are 5mcc 2006, oxford handbook of emergency medicine, oxford handbook of acute medicine , and ferri clinical advisor...
ive also tried the following that work on universal:
1)abc's lab application
2)cecil
3)harrison
4)washington manual 31
5)davis drugs

What is your definition of "it works"? Any slow downs? How about when switching from lanscape to portrait or vice versa? Any problems with screen refreshing on the Universal?
I guess those guys didnt email anyone.
I just checked sometime back and 90% of their products are NOW WM5 compatible. Go and get them
im very interested in medical apps for my pda, please can you guys let me know how they run on the exec. I had some skyscape apps on my ipaq 4150 and it took quite a while to load, im thinkin it would take even longer on the exec.
They are fast and support both landscape and portrait mode. Pretty good in my opinions.
How come skyscape site only list their programs to be compatible with Pocket PC 2003 and not Windows Mobile 5? This is what maybe causing hesitation on our part, at least now we know skyscape programs work even though they did not specify full Windows Mobile 5 support.
Frank Shanns Drug Doses works in both landscape and portrait.
www.drugdoses.net
I think maybe skyscape has updated their site recently, since it seems they are now very specific about which apps are WM5 compatible.
Universaldoc, could you say which apps you have working well on your device?
Hi Shiva,
Most of them are working. When you click on the title, it will show you a list of device requirements in which it will now state WM 5 also. 99% of the apps have been upgraded to WM 5 now.
I mainly use 5mcc and Stedmans They both work very well.
skyscape success
I took the plunge and installed 5 min CC, DrDrugs, and the Medical Letter Drug interactions programs. All seem to work just fine.
One thing that might be disconcerting to some is that in the install routine, if you are installing to storage card, you get a message that install was NOT successful. But you just find the cab files that were successfully copied over, run them, and no problem.
Now my external brain is healthier again.
In Australia
If anyone is in Australia and use MIMS (the local pharmacy information)- then you're out of luck.
Any iSilo stuff works as iSilo itself works
Why would anyone need iSilo when vast databases like Skyscape are available?
Anyone tried ER Suite by Medical Wizards yet?
http://www.medicalwizards.com/client/productdesc.aspx?productid=47
Update: I tried their apps 4 months ago. Their apps worked on the Universal, but it is not WM5 compatible yet. I would not recommend their software for the Universal at the moment.
DrugDoses has been updated
Hi!
Just to let you know that DrugDoses, a PDA version of Frank Shann's Drug Database, has just been updated. I really like its new features, such as the medical formulas and scores (Apgar, Glasgow Coma Scale, QTc, FeNa, etc).

Hi guys
After a long time (since the very first TyTN in the UK - which I managed to secure from Vodafone before their sales organisation even realised they were supposed to be selling it) and a lot of fun ...
I went through 7 exchanges with Vodafone (who were very good at that side of things). I never experienced the display issues or problems with keys on the keyboard - my problems were trapped keyboard ribbon, large gap between the two sliding bits, stylus issues, SD corruption etc.
Following the 7th one, I finally said to customer services that I can't keep going on swapping devices. This happened around March time. At that point, the Nokia N95 was expected. I decided I would have one of those as an exchange and they were happy with that. Although the N95 didn't have many of the benefits of the TyTN (keyboard and touchscreen and the huge base of WM software) it did at least offer some new toys and a proper phone keypad - I got fed up with the lack of a tactile keyboard for the phone (this was the first phone edition device I'd had).
As regard the software this was a worry. I had a huge up to date library of WM5 software.
I decided to rebuild my old iPAQ 2750 (already upgraded to WM5). This would let me have a powerful WM tool with a separate phone that offered the HSDPA transport. The iPAQ wan't as sexy but it was a far better workhorse that the TyTN because of the extra RAM and the massive flash storage potential.
I built the 2750 as below with all the s/w I had. It's absolutely rock solid now (early builds were unstable) with 35mg of free storage flash and 95mg of RAM following a reset. I have backed up the whole lot with Sprite and tested the restore.
Current iPAQ 2750 build - 4GB SD, 4GB CF, 128M RAM, 128M Flash. WM5.
PocketInformant 2005, FlexMail 2007, FlexWallet 2006, VoiceMinder, PhatNotes, Cash Organiser 2007, PIEPlus, 40iPlay, Memory Map v5, CoPilot 6, 1-Calc v3, SoftMaker Office 2006 (Textmaker and Planmaker), Skype, Imov Messenger, Avantgo, Newsbreak, 4Winds Mahjong, Gamebox Classics, Galaga, Invaders, BubbleShooter, Bejeweled 2, Broken Sword, Billiard Master 3, Flux Challenge, Guardians, Resco Photoviewer, Resco Explorer, Microsoft Reader, PDF Viewer, Sprite 5.1, SKTools, Tweaks2k2, Pocket Breeze, ILauncher, Contact Breeze 2, Pocket Weather, Journal Bar, BatteryPack Plus.
I have 2.5GB of AAC music and 3GB of memory map maps (all the UK ordinance survey).
For data entry and spreadsheets etc - SoftMaker Office with the BT Keyboard and Mouse gives a lot more flexibility than the same install on the TyTN - the keyboard and mouse live in my briefcase.
The only missing thing really is the all in one device (which I would still miss a little) - I need to carry two devices (three if you include the keyboard).
In April ... I found out Vodafone were going to be stocking the Nokia E90. I begged that they let me have that instead of the N95 because of the lack of a keyboard on the N95. They agreed. I should be getting this sometime in May. It's actually thinner than the TyTN and the same width ... but it is a couple of cm longer.
It's going to seem odd going back to Symbian after all these years.
I'll have a proper phone keypad, better normal keyboard, very wide screen for data entry and film watching, decent camera with good video .... the E90 weakness being the availability of third party s/w.
So - two devices again .... but way more power and flexibility than any WM unit on it's own.
I'll let you know how it goes.
Paul.

Well I have some sympathy for you, you appear to have suffered more than most with both physical and software issues. I don't know whether I have been lucky, more accepting, or found a balance more easily but I cannot conceive of going in the direction you are. My symbian days are over and whilst I agree you can get more stability / more power, if you seperate out the functionality of the all- in -one device, I think I'll put up with a bit of instability rather than get 100% reliability in 2 or 3 seperate devices. Of course it's a matter of what suits you best and anyway in a geeky sort of way I like the problems - puzzles to be solved

can any one please help me...i want to know what biotouch is and where to get it and how to get the touchflo cube thing working.
biotouch requires hardware not present on the mogul.
The cube is part of a software interface HTC wrote for the Touch phones. Some people have made clone of this app for other PPC devices by HTC, but the real one as of yet remains on the Elph or Vogue (GSM and CDMA versions of the touch).
For the imitations, search for cube in the development and hacking section.
Hope that answers your question!
FTouchFLO by efrost works very well on the titan. This will allow you to launch applications by sliding your finger left to right, right to left, up to down and down to up. Make sure to find the FTouchFLO config app which makes it about a billion times easier to configure touchflo.
From there if you want to use one of the many cube clones (Slithers SCLPF works exceedingly well on the mogul, currently available only to donators but rough beta version is available and final version should be released very soon for free) you can simply assign the up down gesture from ftouchflo to launch the cube program of your choice.
All of these, as well as other similar programs can be found in development and hacking. Good Luck.
Hi Everybody!
I am just loving this SHIFT!!! Thanks for the board, and specifically Paul from MoDaCo... I have finally liberated my CDMA-Shift.
Hey,
I found this out by accident ... I use my Shift via VGA out to my flat screen; and, in doing so, while switching between Vista and SnapVue (errr, WinMo, thanks to Paul). I noticed that the VGA - Monitor keeps the Vista side on, while on the Shift itself, the WinMo displays on the device, therefore, I am able to view (and access) both WinMO and Vista at the same time. This comes in handy when you're a multi-tasker like me.
It's pretty nifty to be able to use your Vista side via VGA out all the while having that ability to have access to WinMO simultaneously.
If you haven't tried it, check it out!
Great, so simple. I liked that idea. I don't k now if it is useful, but it looks cool.
just bought a 37 inch tv. i'm viewing some movies via the shift on it but never tried to swich to snapvue to see what does it do. Anyway it's kind of cool, will try. Now the shift should look like a fancy barebone system on my desk.

If you use it simultaneously, Shift's keyboard and mouse are used for WinMo, and external keyboard and mouse work in Vista.
You can have your vista side connected via HSDPA and your vista via WiFi.
- You could have an IM conversation with yourself!
HTC shift is so inventive. It's like computer lego.
One question, where would the WM sound eminate?
when i'm in my office, i start windows vista and switch to snapvue.
then i connect from my desktop to the shift-vista using remote desktop. so i have snapvue on the shift screen and shift-vista on my desktop (using my desktop monitor, keyboard and mouse)...
this is cool.
VERY COOL INDEED! I am so glad to have discovered this on my Shift. I use it with a wireless keyboard/mouse for the Vista side via external Monitor, while the WinMO/SnapVue side stays up on running, syncing the updates from Outlook.
Now if we can get the SD card to work on the WinMO side!!!

Sounds great, I'd like to have both working at the same time... hehe .. still 4 months to wait to get my shift !! grr.
I don't think SD card could be a good thing for WinMO if it is not a shared ressource. Because readyboost is really interesting and we should keep it on Vista side for that.
