hi, i am new to pocket pc in general.
could you guys that's been using your pda's please let me know what applications you guys recommend having on the pocket pc for my day to day usage. I have a Qtec S100 with 64Mb Memory.
For this I mean additional apps to download and install, but also apps that comes with pocket pc 2003 2nd edition that you recommend.
could you also state where you get these apps from.. i.e. download sites.
regards
bushmen
I pray that you days are much better than mine But here are some items.
I use Pocket Breeze to display appts and tasks on my Today screen.
I use PocketInformant to manage my calendar, etc as it find it offers much more than the built-in apps.
PocketZenPhone for different profiles (adjusts the sounds, screen, etc) by selecting an icon, or by Outlook calendar or even just by time.
ListPro. It is a list program on some major steriods. It is more a cross between a list program and a database. It is quite flexible, so I use it to keep track of things from a shopping list, to vehicle maintenance to PPC tips and software keys.
thanks harleyxlc,
this information is really valueble to me since I don't know anything about pda apps.

My apps on S100
http://www.thedvdforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=378063
On my S100 (clone of M500):
WisBar (or my preference, SmallMenuPlus) for task management
SpriteBackup for backups. Memaid for memory cleanup
PocketMusic or Mort Player for music
TextMaker for wordprocessing
Games - BustEm2, Flux, MorphGear emulator, SimCity, SprintRG, VectorBlaster, Elite
Films - BetaPlayer and Pocket TV listings
Art - PocketArtist and Resco Picture Viewer
Sound - Resco Sound Explorer (MP3 recording/dictaphone)
Internet - MultiIE (improves Internet Explorer), Newsbreak reader, PTVNCHi for VNC (using desktop over wireless)
Reference - Britanica or Columbia Encylcopedia, iSilo (I find it's the best ebook reader if you make your own - it rips a whole website and packs it down), Repligo (like PDF but more efficient), TomeRaider 3, and WordBook dictionary
Input - Calligrapher, JogButton, TouchKeyboard, Typango, BlimKeys
Systools- CETuner, Kilmist Regedit, Tweaks2k2.net, GSFinder (ESSENTIAL, get this first), Cabinst (likewise essential), PHM Tools (all are useful)
Travel - Rough Guide to London and Visual IT Tube (free at the mo because of bombs)
Phone - unforunately most diallers etc are very poor. the built in Intellidialer is about the best, but not great. See D9 dialler for an alternative. Also, you MUST install mamaich's dialler hack from http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=11120 to get some use out of the built in dialler (see towards the end of that thread for latest version).
I use buttonmax to redfine all my keys. It's not perfect, but best of the button definers. Also, use AE Button Plus to redefine your Volume Up/Down keys to Up/Down).
So set up is
SmallMenuPlus to change StartButton and for task management etc.
ButtonMax allows me to pop this up with the camera button.
AE ButtonPlus allows me to use vol up/down to navigate the menu.
TIP - if you don't have an external SD writer, get one. About £3 from ebuyer or ebay.
Then get a FAST 1gb card - i got mine from Moby Memory. Then you can "backup" 800mb divx films on to your SD card in about a minute; makes music and films very enjoyable on the go.
If you don't have a writer, get one. Then apply the Extended Rom Hack on XDA developers to get a fre 27mb of "storage" space on your phone.
Tip - install all programs onto "Storage Card" or "storage" to keep your phone efficient and fast. Use cabinst for this.
Registry hacks - see XDA developers forum.
PM me if you need any help.

I've got a 1gb card, and the extended rom hack.
Day to day I've got about 200mb of program files installed on the Card, 1 film ("Primer") and 2 episodes of Futarama.
My Storage (extended rom) is used to hold any apps that will use the internet. I can spop out my 1gb card and put in the ebuyer Wifi card when i want to go online, and still have access to those apps. I shrink my "storage" space down to about 9mb to give my PocketPC as much memory as possible "control > system >memory"
On my 1gb card I've got about 20mb of free space. Every so often I use sprite backup to do a backup of my PPC and Storage space. I make this an executable file, so that God forbid I hard reset, the whole thing can be restored on the go without any additional software.
Every so often I make a backup of my 1gb card onto my PC desktop, so God forbid I lose my phone, I've still got everything backed up.
This routine is very easy, and works for me (takes 3minutes per backup). I won't preach, but man it took a long time to get my PPC working to my taste. I haven't had a PPC since the original IPAQ (which the GF still uses for bubblets!). Since then I've had SPV, SPV E100, Sony P900 and finally the Magician. I like the magician, but it needs to be more 1 handed.
I tried sooo many programs before settling on this set; I've hacked the registry and written my own Today plugin for measuring temperature, day/date, count audio notes and notes saved on Storage Card and PPC.
I use SmallMenu Plus to replace my start menu and task manager, and I use ProgramMenu assigned to my contacts button to bring up essential phone apps - so I can use the phone with one thumb comfortably to do essential stuff (programmenu) , and one hand slightly less comfortably to bring up smallmenu/taskmanagement etc. It sounds complicated but it's near perfect in operation, finally.
Hence - I backup regularly! It took so long to get the PPC working spiffy, I don't want to FUBAR it!
V
PS I also use 1-pass to lock my PPC every 15 minutes. I've resource edited the program to use my own background, so everything works with my very simple theme. I'll post screenshots some time...
How did you make your backup and exeacutable?
Sprite Backup > Options > General Backup Options > Create Self-restoring backup files.
V
duh lol i looked over that thankz alot for pointing that out
day to day apps
hi,
thanks for all the people that have posted what they're using. I will definately look through the lists and see what i can come up with.
i am currently struggeling with my latest 2gb sd card from ADATA. I can not get my pocket pc to recognise the card.... getting sooo frustrated.
as soon as i can get that working, i can upgrade the rom.. install apps and run the hacks....
if anyone else has more to post on these topics, please do so.
take care

What do you guys think is essential / nice to have ?
Spare battery is good. Also I couldnt live without my San Disk SD WLAN and 512mb SD cards.
Any of you recommend a replacement launcher?
I use Magic Button. Nice prog to view open apps in the background and is freeware. Allows quick swithing to today screen.
Also nice is Task Manager. Shows all processes and is also freeware.
And for single hand phone operation: Finger Clix
Can be downloaded here, 7 days trial for free: http://www.pocketgear.com/ppcw/software_detail.asp?id=10595
FINGERCLIX
FingerClix is the best phone dialer for the XDA (I and II). The whole concept of one hand dialing has changed, and using the XDA became even easier than standard mobile phones.
a hack to move around installed programs
Anyone know a way to organise installed programs so that you can decide what folders they appear in ?
Using the File Explorer, open Windows, then Start Menu.
You will see a list of shortcuts of the same programs that you get when you click on Start.
Open the folder named Programs.
Here, you have the shortcuts to all your programs
Now, you can create new folders, cut and paste shortcuts from one folder to another...
The fastest way is to access all this through your PC via ActiveSync. It is faster to move the icons, and you can create shortcuts to programs that you had to copy directly to your XDA, and put the shortcut in the Programs menu...
THANK YOU
Thank you very much,

Another program that I find essential for internet browsing, is PIEPlus:

It has many features, mainly it skweezes the web page to fit perfectly in the screen of the XDA. You can open many windows (with possibility of open in a new window for a link), full screen mode, Identify PIE as IE5.5 or IE6.0, ...much much better thant any other software (Skweezer, PocketPlus, FtxPBrowser,...)
Unfortunately it is not free ($15)

thank you
sorry im new to this and searching and reading as much as poss.any help or tips wlecome

i think a lot would agree with me when i say the ultimate must have app is Spb Pocket Plus 3.0
I would add Resco explorer with reg.& ftp plugin, Sprite back-up, PHM mechanic, PHM powertoys & VGS mail (runs imap on your magician, found on this forum). Running airscanner firewall & Trend micro mobile security as well. Testing magic button for really closing apps. I belief spb leaks too much memory. That's personal ofcourse.

Here's the list of my must have's and how to's. To start with, installing the Big Storage ROM will make your device way faster, but ONLY IF you install most of the programs in Storage. This way, your free RAM will be 13Mb Prog/9Mb Storage most of the time!
The list of essential programs I don't do without:
1) SBSH Pocket Breeze: gives a lot of information on the Today screen and is not performance hungry. Very very stable. I installed in Storage.
2) Pocket Max PhoneAlarm: Today plug-in that allows you set profiles and assign MP3 tones to SMS as well.
3) Sprite Backup: Simply the best backup tool that also comes with Sprite Space Detective and a Today Plug-in for battery and memory monitoring. Using this plug-in I saved myself from installing SPB Pocket Plus (I don't want to run programs from a today plug-in, most of them are accessible from the Start menu anyway).
4) TKCreator: a theme editor that allows me to modify themes on the PPC and also select themes stored anywhere on the device without modifying the registry. FREE.
5) PSShutXP: a program that lets you soft-reset the PPC without having to fiddle with the stylus. FREE.
6) TCPMP (Beta Player): for those weird formats that WMP10 does not recognise
7) MemMaid: Mostly useful to delete Internet Cache and Mail attachment. You wouldn't need the Bad Installation clean ups if you stick to only the software you use and the only software that works. When I want to fiddle with some new software I just take a backup before I start and restore if I need to.
8) Microsoft Voice Command: ideal in the car, where I just say "Play ..." or "Call ..." at the press of a button.
9) Modified MS BT stack: at least this stack works properly with my wife's Nokia 6230. A2DP is also welcome with this stack.
10) MobiPocket Reader: a very cool RSS/News reader that I snychronise every morning, thus making my favorite daily readings available off-line any time of the day. (I'm subsribed (FREE) to CNN, BBC News, BBC Tech, The Register, Pocket PC Thoughts, MS Windows Mobile Team Blog, The Times of Malta and Soccer Net.)
Finally, with regards to closing apps as opposed to minimising them (one of the most popular features of SPB Pocket Plus), I found that with plenty of RAM available (after installing all progs to Storage), leaving the apps runnning in the background makes the Magician MUCH MORE responsive.
Since I installed the above setup I never ever had to reset the device. It's the best I ever had. Almost flawless.

I have only two apps running. Spb Pocket Plus and tAgenda. Between the two, I have all the information I need. I prefer to keep my memory useage low, so that when I open those two or three applications, they have lots of memory.
kta: I've searched, but can only find onfo on the Bluesoleil BT stack - not a modified MS stack. Can you please direct us to info on how to do this upgrade.

Well having been a member of this forum now for a few months I have learned many valuable things. Extended Roms... new software... accessories... flashing... and the list goes on and on... I thank you all for the education. That being said the time has come to choose the Ultimate setup and flash/setup this device one last time (for a while anyway so I wanted to poll the community and see what others are running on their Universals...
1. What Carrier/Radio Version (QTEK, IMATE, O2, TMOBILE etc...)
2. What's in the Extended Rom...
3. What reg hacks...
4. What software is installed on the device... (today plugins etc...)
5. What software is installed on the SD Card...
If you all like I will post the results in a report and we can see what people are really using on their devices.
Again... I want to thank everybody on the forum who so freely shares his information and hard work. Let's keep donating to this site and keep it humming along.
Cyberslinger
for starters
Yeah this forum is great! From what I've picked up here, I decided to put smallmenu, total commander, and gsplayer in my Extended ROM.
I also like using OzVGA and the Opera browser.
I use Pocket Informant for the PIM stuff, and e-wallet for the more confidential stuff.
I'm in the medical field, and I like the Skyscape medical references.
I also have the core media player and pocket artist. Almost forgot, I use MS Voice Command with my bluetooth headset.
Besides the programs in Extended ROM, pretty much everything else except Voice Command is installed to the SD card.
For games, I mostly play bubble breaker, but I have Doom, Snails, Flux Challenge, and tried the demo for sealball. The Universal is not a great gaming machine IMO, but generally I am VERY happy with my setup.

Hope this helps your poll...

2. What's in the Extended Rom...
3. What reg hacks...
4. What software is installed on the device... (today plugins etc...)
5. What software is installed on the SD Card...
1. Imate, standard rom available on the site
2. Dont care, I dont install any of it except the communication carrier (telstra) and the bluetooth patch. This gives me a 31 meg startup RAM excluding today and additional startups installed by choice.
3. Limited, MSVC hack for blue tooth (I have done lots in the past, but no real impact that I found beneficial so didnt bother on the last hard reset last week).
4. SPB Pocket Plus (beta 3.1), SPB Weather, SPB Diary, SPB Backup (beta 1.0), Resco Explorer/ftp/reg, MSVC, KSE True Fax
5. Total Commander, Oxios, FeederReeder, TCPMP, Resco Audio, Resco Radio, Resco Photos, Wisbar Advance and Wisbar Desktop (Wisbar is really just play and fun, I would never load today screen configurations from an SD card), Blue Point Earth and Blue Point World Info, Pocket RAR, Microsoft E Reader, Omega One 1 Calc, and Paint. Only game installed Resco Guardians.
Using the SPB backup beta, when I did a hard reset, I did a perfect backup using SPB for all device software with all my tweaks and adjustments, passwords, settings, configurations, wifi and bluetooth settings and passwords, hit most of my sites and put in my user names and passwords and auto login.
Now, when I restore, everything is perfect. I also then did a second with all my perfect apps installed to the SD card, and registered them all and setup all those tweaks, and did another backup. I now have my "virgin" machine, and my "custom" machine.
I also extracted all of the cab files for all of the software, including the entire extended rom and copied them to my SD card for easier and quicker installation and access without needing activesync.
I can now do a full hard reset and configure in about 5 minutes. Startup RAM is now 28meg, but with SPB PP, Weather, and Diary is about 22meg runs down to 12 meg then soft reset. Screen rotation first time is 3 seconds, then sub 1 second on subsequent rotations depending on the next reset.
So overall, and in essence, I am totally f..kin ecstatic with my setup (taken about 10 attempts to get to this)
great post...
Very Informative Simon. I believe that you have a great system for preserving your setup. I will defintely be incorporating it into my ultimate setup.
Good stuff here guys.. keep it coming.

Yeah the size of pocketplus along with the fact it seemed to slow my universal down.
Re games:
Gamebox Solitaire my favourite, but also have:
Also have Age of Empires
Concentrix (Like Tetris but with circles)
G-Prime (Like Galaxian)
Invasion (Like Space Invaders)
Jewel Hunter (Like Boulderdash)
Personality Pro ( Asks loads of question to reveal your type of personality)
Pocket Sudoku
Shanghai (Mahjongg)
SimCity 2000
SkyForce (ShMUp)
Tower Mogul (Manage an apartment block)
Transport Tycoon Deluxe (Doesnt quite work yet - waiting for the next update)
Warring Nations VGA
Zuma
Have Licences for (But dont work with WM5 or universal):

Cropped Out (Match three or more the same to remove shapes)
G-Pod (Collect a pod and traverse caverns to escape with it)(No button remapping - impossible to play)
Odyssey (ShMUp)
Rayman Ultimate (No Button remapping - Gutted as not playable)
Matt
here's mine:
1.Wisbar advance(i like the look)
2.ILauncher (smaller than pocketplus + other featus covered by other programs)
3.pocket breeze ( i can see my appointments and task on the today sceen plus i can add other today utilities)
4.Weather panel (i like the look )
5. gprs monitor
i installed all the above to the extended rom (thanks to buzz)
6.TCPMP
7.Cash Organizer
8.opera (better than pie, builtin tabbed browinsing and better webpage view. could use a little speed upgrade though, and the ability to scroll using stylus and be able to save images.)
9.pocket rar(cant live without it
10. flexi mail formerly webis mail
11. scicalc (standard calculator replacement)
12. total commander
games (i don't have much)
1.arvale 2 & 1 (rpg)
2.hexacto tennis
3.text twist
well it seems like im the only one putting up with pocket plus, i will have to do a full backup and hard reset and try and install the programs you are all using instead of pocket Plus features.
Opera- i have been interested in using this as i think PIE is very feature-less, but i have been worried about the size of the install, do you know how much resouces it takes up installing and running?
1) Pocket Informant - superb
2) Batti - does what it's supposed to do
OT slightly, is there a general consensus on the best Alarm Clock (pref with maximise to full screen option/screen buttons) for the Exec?
Thx.
Here is my list.
VJToggleTodayII alpha0.1.5 (to hide top & bottom bar for real estate for today screen).
PWSLauncher (to see power & ram status without wasting any space)
HandySwitcher (closing task)
HandyMenu (easy access of utilities like reset, today..etc)
filedlgchgs (to allow save/open to folders 2 or 3 levels down)
Caldendar + (calendar plug-in)
Tasks+ Today plug-in (plug-in)
Oxios (to free memory)
Birthdays (to remind important dates)
Jab1a,
I don't know how much memory opera consumes but i think it depends on the website. the merrier the web site the more it consumes memory (i think ).
ok Slaughter, thats good enough for me, i will try it out when i get a chance.
Im still looking for a game that can realy show off the ability of our Universal?
I used to have Batti on but I found my exec crashed every night while it was on charge (I've got the latest exec ROM on which to be honest, I find pretty unstable)
The main thing I would miss about pocket plus would be the close button menu thing - I've got it set so I can tap and hold on a close button a bring up a menu of what's running.
I know magic button does this but it screws up the display slighly and\or uses non-VGA graphics which I don't like.
Is there a way around this as I also find pocket plus to be a bit bloaty and slow...

Hi,
Not sure what you mean by screws the display?
I use magic button, but dont show the task bar (the program icons) unless needing to switch apps quickly - and havent had any issues.
Matt
I believe what LordSmith meant was Magic Button shows a small blank square on the right upper corner where the "x" or close botton appears when you open an application, if you have for example a gray colored menu bar or task bar. My solution for this is just simply stay away from the gray color and use sky blue or the default windows blue color. Aside from that Magic Button is great and shows all my running apps nicely.

All i use for day2day use is SPB, and i think it is too much though.
I use PIE, Email, Sync, Excel, WinWord, Tasks, Calendar,
Basically all the available options, and i don't (IMHO) think i need all these extra stuff.

First -
I want to thank you all for helping me, I have been reading and reading now for going on two days...
That being said I still have a few questions that even wiki can't solve.
My main one is:
If you had to start with a new virgin Cingular 8525, what changes would you make to it?
Voice Dialer
OmegaOne battery Meter
New Skins
There are just a plethora of choices out there and don't want to waste my time on one or the other if there are better choices.
I have read - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=292073 but wanted to get more than one viewpoint
Thanks in advance.
After every hard reset or purchasing a new pocket pc the first programs i install which i see as very essential are:
SPB Pocket Plus
Resco File Explorer
MS Voice Command
Memaid
Then i move on to the aesthetic things like themes and dialer skins.
It all depends on what you use it for, for me its mainly emails, organising my appointments/tasks/projects as well as GPS navigation to some strip clubs ive never been too
These are the apps I run on my hermes:
*bandswitch
*HTweakC 2.0
*Spb weather
*Spb Diary
*Spb Pocket Plus
*Spb backup
*PocketZenPhone
*Mortplayer
*Resco File Explorer
*SKTools
*Batti
*tomtom navigator 6
I have all of the above installed on main memory (and have 33mb free) and use my SD card for tomtom maps, mp3's, documents, and email storage.
I just use an all black theme with black bars. Nice and simple and great contrast.
