Well, I woke up this morning with an unpleasant surprise.
I kept touching the screen to unlock my phone and nothing was happening.
Keys all respond fine.
But the touch screen does not.
I've found a few pages of people with the same problem, but no real solutions. I've tried soft resets, I've tried running paper under the edge of the screen..
I haven't done a hard reset yet, because the accounts I have read of this happening all say they get stuck on the align screen.
The phone was working fine when I went to bed last night. This is very bizarre
New LCD
Yeah, the best thing is to order new screen on eBay, you should pay $60 and it's like new again.
Or try refalshing the device. If that doesn't works.. Try Danjus' answer.
'Like New'
A new screen for 60 bucks?
This screen is new. I just bought this phone not even 2 months ago.
This is ridiculous.
Now it is just as mysteriously working again.
How can they sell this garbage?
It's not necessarily garbage just because you have an issue with one. Plenty of people use the same device for months and years without an issue. You never know what happens to a phone in transit from manufacturer to store. If you just bought it two months ago, take it back to the store you bought it and demand a replacement. Tell them that the touch screen is not working.
Also (and please do not take this as an insult but working in IT I see a lot of boneheaded blunders) make sure you did not have the screen locked. It's obvious when it is since it generally has the word UNLOCK on the bottom corner.
Worked when I woke up..
Not working again.
And this problem is obviously pretty common. What's not is a reason or reasonable fix for it.
I had my MDA for 2 years. It had been used so much the plastic was worn clear. I dropped it down stairs onto concrete.. still worked.
This junk hasn't been dropped ocne and it's been nothing but problems.

Sounds like you have a defective wing. It could be a loose connection where the touchscreen connects to the board. I would definitely return it though. It doesn't seem to be a common problem though. Oh, and I had a MDA too. Man, that thing was a tank. I even dropped mine in water, dried it, and it still worked!

Hi all, its been a long time since Ive posted, but I recently killed my almost 3 yr old TyTN by leaving it in my pocket while sand blasting, Ive since replaced it with a TyTN II, but was hoping maybe I could refurb it, and give it to a family member.
Initially about 6 months ago it got a light blue tint, after I tossed it onto the floor irritated from a lagging pocket IE, but when the sand got to it, it was gritty sliding it open the first time to clean it, and even after cleaning, a few days later the screen started randomly turning white, and then finally stayed that way.
Im unsure if its the ribbon cable or what, it looks pretty good still, and Ive taken the phone apart and tried to get it to work with just a board, cable, and screen, but no luck. When I plug the phone in to a pc, AS still comes up, and it would even white screen while I was talking on it, and still worked, so I think the main board is still ok.
I was just curious of anyone happened to have an old bricked unit laying around, or a bulk of parts for a decent price, it looks like buying the parts individually would cost more than just a new refurb.
The phone has actually been a pretty rugged, took lots of abuse over the yrs, and kept ticking.
Thanks,
Dru
Edit: Hopefully I havent stuck this in the wrong spot, I just noticed the marketplace section. Its been a long week, move it if need be.

hi.i sent you private message.i have a bricked hermes.
Hi all,
Well, it seems my phone has given up the ghost and died on me. The phone boots up, and the screen comes on, but it is completely unresponsive to touch. THe hardware buttons are working though. Has this happened to anyone else? I've taken good care of my phone - always in the case - originally pouch then HTC flip case, never dropped, and kept well away from water. I never had a serious problem with the phone before, now this happens. It's so frustrating - only had it for 6 weeks! Now have to send it all the way back to Singapore and wait for them to sort it out and send it back. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
David
Try a HardReset, see if that fixes it. Had this issue 2 times when I had my HTC TyTN II.
Soft-Reset or HardReset.... First try the soft tho.
And on what ROM are you?
I've done a soft and a hard reset - no go, still down. Using official 1.66 ROM. Any ideas?
You're not operating in an extremely-cold environment are you? The digitizer drops in performance when it's cold.
Nor are you wearing gloves? With it being a capacitive device it relies on the natural electronic flow of your body to disrupt the electro-magnetic field the digitizer produces. Unless you're wearing very thin gloves, then gloves will stop the screen 'seeing' your finger.
Can't really think of anything else that may help.
If it's not environmental and you can't find any software causes, then your digitizer most likely has kicked the dust.
Definitely not in a cold environment - live in Durban in the tropics... And so no gloves either. If it is the digitiser, would it be covered by the warranty?
Yes it should be covered by the warranty.

it has also happened to me! I have had to send him/it in guarantee because it deals with problem hrdware (recognized in many models by the htc). They will handle the substitution of the display and other parts hardware.
P.S.: to me you/he/she has begun not to work in days with high damp and cold
Well, we've had a long spell of very hot weather and evening thunderstorms. Could being in a cool airconditioned environment and then going out into the humid outdoors have been the cause of the problems?

wtf.. mine just did this today also?...
I worked just fine a few hours ago here in my office. But now... nothing.
I also take really good care of my phone, had it for ~3 months now and not even a small nick or anything on it.
just did a hardreset on mine also. And still no life.
touch screen is totally dead - gonna send mine in for repairs then.
Maybe it's a conspiracy by HTC... What environmental conditions were you under?

well its ~1c outside rigth now but it has been in a nice warm office all day, for like 3 hours or so before it broke
Maybe it's the transition from warm to cold and back that broke our phones. If it is, what can be done to prevent it happening again?

nothing i guess. Its not like mine has been that cold...
my trip this morning
6.30 am - locked my door and walked like 10 meters to my car, got in turned the heater on and had it running a podcast
7.45 am - arrived at work and walked like 50 meters to the front door
~11 am - phone display stopped working
So its not like i have been outside that much for it to get really cold. I always carry it in my front pocket.
Oh great, yet another potential problem I'll have to look out for.

well tbh i dont think its a hot/cold problem. It has been even colder for the last few months and it has never missed a beat. I agree that the coincidence is almost off the charts. But it may just be a manufacturing problem with some of them and CloneboyZA and i just have bad luck.
I thought I'd been lucky enough to get a decent one, but guess it was not to be...
Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago.
Sent it to repair and they swapped the screen.

k thx good to know. Gonna send mine in for RMA on monday, unless i can make it tomorrow.
Well, I've got to ship mine all the way to Singapore from South Africa... Most frustrating!
So, today I dropped my dhd.... literally 3 feet, nothing crazy..... and it has a full body invisible shield and an otterbox case.... it did land on a corner, wood floor.... now, when I go to wake the phone up.... it turns on. It is randomly powering off since the very, gentle fall.....
It does not make a lot of sense, any thoughts or recommendations appreciated.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
try taking out your cards and battery, the drop may have un seated them
first thing I tried.... clips look good, battery looks good, phone looks great.... when I put in my second battery... it seemed to be running well, until 6 minutes ago, when I pressed the power button... silly phone was off again.
I powered down, ejected all 3 items, placed them all back in.... it was such a harmless fall, with a full protected phone....
sounds like something may have become loose, i sense a rma back to htc if a full wipe etc dosnt solve it
not 100% sure, but after pushing the sim card out and in again... has not happened since.... I hope as heck it is ok, such a simple drop, heh!
thx
I'ved dropped my phone like a thousand times but nothing like this has happend too me!
I think HTC will replace on you warranty for this... Ask them!
sim card not making connections properlly will cause the phone to reboot, as i found out when i first got my desire hd, my 15 year old simcard was too worn to make a clean connection. once i went down to the tmobile shop they descovered it was that at fault after i said the phone was knackard.
simcards will compress very slightly over its life causing poorer connections.
if the problem has now dissapeared it may be worth your while getting a new sim if it is of age.

Yep, t-mobile has always been good to me (actually the card was 121 printed on it).
Hello guys,
Funny thing, I gave my dad a DHD to play around with (hoping that he will finally get rid of his BB), just a few days ago in his office he mistakingly dropped it 7 floors down to the parking lot.
Amazing, just amazing, except a few bumps here and there, a cracked Sim cover and a bit broken battery cover, the DHD came back to working without and problem.
I am sure if it did not happen to me I would have been sceptic, but IT REALLY HAPPENED.
Thumbs up htc for a strong unit.
I dropped mine from my pocket and nothing happened, not even a scratch.
I'm gonna report an incident I've reported again in the forums.
When I first got my DHD,about one week if I remember well,I went for a drink with some friends. Before we went to the pub we usually go to,we wanted to eat something,so we went to this fast food. While we were waiting for our food,we were saying the usual bull**** we always say with the guys.Sometimes though we tend to pull the strings, and I told one of them off badly,so he decided to punch my leg.Unfortunately, with his full strength, his fist landed on my new, shiny and unprotected DHD,which was in my pocket. As soon as I realised it,my heart went at the kidney's place, the kidney went at my stomach's place and my stomach went all the way to my head out fear!
Next day?My DHD was like nothing happened and my pal's hand was almost broken.
Yep,thumbs up HTC!
yea, it was pretty weird and once in a while... I hit the power button and it is OFF again, not rebooting... off, hitting the wake button turns it back on.... might be software etc....
but on that day, it was happening every 2o minutes, lol
I love htcs design.
Hey guys, long time lurker, first time poster here...
Two days ago, the touch screen and home row buttons intermittently stopped working. I am not sure what triggers it, but the frequency has increased to where the phone is no longer usable from a practical standpoint . Usually turning off the screen and unlocking the phone remedies the problems for a few minutes.
I saw several posts that this may be related to rooting and dropping the phone. I am running stock ROM (never rooted), and I haven't dropped my phone in over a month. I was wondering if anybody has found a fix for this yet other than buying a new phone. I bought my phone used off of eBay over a year ago, so I do not think that it is under warranty.
I should also mention that I did a factory reset which has not helped.
It probably has ssomething to do with the screen getting grounded or not grounded. Like a loose connection or a short circuit. For a while I was having similar problem and found that messing with the little copper connectors on the back of the top half that are exposed when the keyboard is out fixed it. Unfortunatly it was short lived, one day my touchscreen went out completly and I had to take it to Sprint who replaced the whole top half of the Shift. Of course, I had TEP so it was no charge.
Hmm, assumming its just a error with calibration, in mikshifted-G and SS, there is a option to calibrate your screen, this may fix it. You'll need to be rooted for this though.
If its a hardware issue, then, your pretty screwed without a warrenty.
Sent from my Tapatalk Premium app I got for free thanks to getjar!!!
If you have TEP, it doesn't matter how long ago you bought it. Just take it in, they'll repair it no charge.
Thanks
Thanks for the ideas, but unfortunately tinkering with the copper and screen calibration did not help. I think I am just SOL.
Update: Sprint replaced the phone for $35
So I took the phone to Sprint to see what they could do. They opened the phone and tinkered around with something inside (which actually fixed the touchscreen problem but left the casing jacked up). When I asked what was actually wrong with the phone, they said that they did not know. However, they said that they needed to order a part for $35 to fix the screen. When I came back a couple days later, instead of installing a new part, they gave me a refurbished phone with a 30 day warranty.
Although it only carries a 30 day warranty, a refurbished replacement phone for $35 is a pretty solid deal (especially since I'm on contract without insurance or warranty). I hope this helps anyone with similar screen problems.
Glad to hear you got it sorted out. Especially for so cheap without Insurance. Nice
I woke up one morning last week and my phone was acting like it had a mind of its own. It was activating the navigation buttons over and over again even though it was sitting on the table untouched. This made the phone pretty much useless since every time I opened an app the phone immediately closed it.
To try to fix this I completely wiped the phone and went back to stock. After that I update the touch firmware. This did nothing to fix the problem.
Fast forward about five days later. The phone stopped the behavior as quickly as it has started. Everything was fine with it for about 3 days. I could use every function just like the day I bought it.
BUT now this morning it was back to doing the same exact behavior where it acts like someone is touching the nav buttons constantly. They even light up like someone is pressing them.
Can anyone help me out with this? I am going to end up having to sell it for parts if I can't figure out what is going on.

Looks like your screen is on its way out. Replace it under warranty if u can. My first phone did that after some snow fell in the earpiece area last winter.
After that the top part of the screen was no longer responsive. Before that occured, the phone acted possessed like you're describing

That's what I was afraid of. I am out of warranty which means I am out of luck I think. I was really hoping it was a software issue since it stopped for a few days.
What else do you expect? It called "smartphone" for a reason, right? and your phone happens to be the first one with that kind of intelligence. More like the transformer robot blending into your device heheheheh
Anyway, something wrong with your screen, loose end somewhere?

Lol, it seems like it has some kind of intelligence and it is setting it's mind on making my life difficult!
There doesn't seem like there is anything loose. It wasn't dropped and it started overnight while it was just sitting on a table.

Thats the thing. Some of these screens go bad by defect. I hear its not hard to swap in a replacement. Look into the full assembly with frame so its quicker and easier.
I may buy one as a spare and store it safe in case my screen goes bad after the warranty expires

Same is happening on my old phone, to be specific the digitizer is going out.
Would you believe I woke up this morning and it stopped again?!?! I decided I am going to just sell it for parts. I can't deal with having a phone that is unreliable. Sad day BC I really do like this phone.
