I woke up one morning last week and my phone was acting like it had a mind of its own. It was activating the navigation buttons over and over again even though it was sitting on the table untouched. This made the phone pretty much useless since every time I opened an app the phone immediately closed it.
To try to fix this I completely wiped the phone and went back to stock. After that I update the touch firmware. This did nothing to fix the problem.
Fast forward about five days later. The phone stopped the behavior as quickly as it has started. Everything was fine with it for about 3 days. I could use every function just like the day I bought it.
BUT now this morning it was back to doing the same exact behavior where it acts like someone is touching the nav buttons constantly. They even light up like someone is pressing them.
Can anyone help me out with this? I am going to end up having to sell it for parts if I can't figure out what is going on.

Looks like your screen is on its way out. Replace it under warranty if u can. My first phone did that after some snow fell in the earpiece area last winter.
After that the top part of the screen was no longer responsive. Before that occured, the phone acted possessed like you're describing

That's what I was afraid of. I am out of warranty which means I am out of luck I think. I was really hoping it was a software issue since it stopped for a few days.
What else do you expect? It called "smartphone" for a reason, right? and your phone happens to be the first one with that kind of intelligence. More like the transformer robot blending into your device heheheheh
Anyway, something wrong with your screen, loose end somewhere?

Lol, it seems like it has some kind of intelligence and it is setting it's mind on making my life difficult!
There doesn't seem like there is anything loose. It wasn't dropped and it started overnight while it was just sitting on a table.

Thats the thing. Some of these screens go bad by defect. I hear its not hard to swap in a replacement. Look into the full assembly with frame so its quicker and easier.
I may buy one as a spare and store it safe in case my screen goes bad after the warranty expires

Same is happening on my old phone, to be specific the digitizer is going out.
Would you believe I woke up this morning and it stopped again?!?! I decided I am going to just sell it for parts. I can't deal with having a phone that is unreliable. Sad day BC I really do like this phone.

Hi all,
Well, it seems my phone has given up the ghost and died on me. The phone boots up, and the screen comes on, but it is completely unresponsive to touch. THe hardware buttons are working though. Has this happened to anyone else? I've taken good care of my phone - always in the case - originally pouch then HTC flip case, never dropped, and kept well away from water. I never had a serious problem with the phone before, now this happens. It's so frustrating - only had it for 6 weeks! Now have to send it all the way back to Singapore and wait for them to sort it out and send it back. Any recommendations?
Thanks,
David
Try a HardReset, see if that fixes it. Had this issue 2 times when I had my HTC TyTN II.
Soft-Reset or HardReset.... First try the soft tho.
And on what ROM are you?
I've done a soft and a hard reset - no go, still down. Using official 1.66 ROM. Any ideas?
You're not operating in an extremely-cold environment are you? The digitizer drops in performance when it's cold.
Nor are you wearing gloves? With it being a capacitive device it relies on the natural electronic flow of your body to disrupt the electro-magnetic field the digitizer produces. Unless you're wearing very thin gloves, then gloves will stop the screen 'seeing' your finger.
Can't really think of anything else that may help.
If it's not environmental and you can't find any software causes, then your digitizer most likely has kicked the dust.
Definitely not in a cold environment - live in Durban in the tropics... And so no gloves either. If it is the digitiser, would it be covered by the warranty?
Yes it should be covered by the warranty.

it has also happened to me! I have had to send him/it in guarantee because it deals with problem hrdware (recognized in many models by the htc). They will handle the substitution of the display and other parts hardware.
P.S.: to me you/he/she has begun not to work in days with high damp and cold
Well, we've had a long spell of very hot weather and evening thunderstorms. Could being in a cool airconditioned environment and then going out into the humid outdoors have been the cause of the problems?

wtf.. mine just did this today also?...
I worked just fine a few hours ago here in my office. But now... nothing.
I also take really good care of my phone, had it for ~3 months now and not even a small nick or anything on it.
just did a hardreset on mine also. And still no life.
touch screen is totally dead - gonna send mine in for repairs then.
Maybe it's a conspiracy by HTC... What environmental conditions were you under?

well its ~1c outside rigth now but it has been in a nice warm office all day, for like 3 hours or so before it broke
Maybe it's the transition from warm to cold and back that broke our phones. If it is, what can be done to prevent it happening again?

nothing i guess. Its not like mine has been that cold...
my trip this morning
6.30 am - locked my door and walked like 10 meters to my car, got in turned the heater on and had it running a podcast
7.45 am - arrived at work and walked like 50 meters to the front door
~11 am - phone display stopped working
So its not like i have been outside that much for it to get really cold. I always carry it in my front pocket.
Oh great, yet another potential problem I'll have to look out for.

well tbh i dont think its a hot/cold problem. It has been even colder for the last few months and it has never missed a beat. I agree that the coincidence is almost off the charts. But it may just be a manufacturing problem with some of them and CloneboyZA and i just have bad luck.
I thought I'd been lucky enough to get a decent one, but guess it was not to be...
Same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago.
Sent it to repair and they swapped the screen.

k thx good to know. Gonna send mine in for RMA on monday, unless i can make it tomorrow.
Well, I've got to ship mine all the way to Singapore from South Africa... Most frustrating!
Splodge, was the only way I could describe it...take a look at the attached photo.
I'm certain I have seen someone else post this before.
It just happened randomly! Was fine all day yesterday, then picked my phone up to answer it last night, and after the phone call had ended I saw this on the screen...
Touch screen still works, and you can still see underneath it, its less visible when the back light is on. Of course when it's off, you can see the effect it has!
So...what is it? Easily fixed or what?
Like I said, I'm sure I have seen this posted by someone else before...
Hehe... nice one. It will most likely disappear if you gently pull the glass with a suction cup.
Brgds... /Tubgirl
Suction cup thing works but then it comes back.
HTC said it would be out of warrenty :S and they would have to look at it first.
O2 however, said if its in warrenty (which it is) then they will get it repaired and supply a courtesy handset while they have it.
i had one the same size it has slowly gone to half the size 5 pence piece but o2 said its not under warrenty and i work for a major phone retailer and my repairs guy said it may so im very unsure wuld have re flash it as its hspl grrr

interesting, well I'm taking it to the O2 store next week, so will see what they say, will keep the email i had off them saying they will as backup!
It has reduced in size, but still has the rainbow pattern in the middle.
I had a similar screen problem however it didnt look anywhere near as bad as yours. Mine had slight discolouration mostly noticable on white backgrounds. Pressing the screen a little bit harder than normal created the sort of effect you get when pressing the screen of a calculator (dont know what to call it) I took mine to the o2 shop with a different fault and also mentioned this fault. I got it back 6 days later but they hadnt fixed the screen problem. I sent it off again then and there and 6 days later i got a new phone.
O2 now have my HD2
Been given a nasty old Nokia phone as a temp...forgot how small some screens are...lol
should take 7-10 days they said...so fingers crossed...
Any way of fixing this problem without sending it back as this has happened to my cousins HTC HD2, kind of glad it didn't happen to mine lol, any quick fixes to know about?
I've had the same with my HD2.
They fixed it for me (new screen)

LOL!
Well anyway! For me it was very random. The phone was fine all day at work, I had a phone call in the evening, after the phone call I just looked at my phone, and there it was...
Some people have said its caused my the heat of the battery and signal, dunno.
Its a very thin space between the battery and the back of the screen, so maybe thats true.
I can't see how over pressure can cause it as its a glass screen, and glass doesn't bend like plastic.
I had a smaller of these newton rings at the center. Much smaller than yours.
Suddenly one day it disappeared.
It was during summer and I thought it was probably because of the heat.

Interesting, he did always complain about his battery overheating or when on a phone call, the phone temperature increases rapidly, guess that was the cause, at least I get to tell him some good news, he can go to spearmint rhino as much as he wants lol

Hope its fixed soon for you, its interesting about the battery and heat, my hd2 gets warm below the battery and that is also below the main area your problem is on, I suspect its down to a screen fault myself.

Hopefully because I know how it feels like to be without the beloved HD2, I had to last two weeks, no matter what phone you use as a substitute, for some reason, it just cannot compare!
Ok, so i picked up the Nexus S early today, and well I'm in LOVE with the dam phone. BUT i've been through 2 Nexus S's already: 1 because of a dead pixel right dead center of the screen, and the other because of real bad touch screen issues. The touch screen works, but it would become unresponsive frequently and randomly. It works fine then randomly stops responding to input. Took it back and got another 1; same touchscreen issues however not half as bad as the second nexus but still there. I didn't bother replacing for another as the store was about to close and didn't wanna bother but I will go back on sunday if the issues don't go away. Pressing the hardware keys seems to always fix the stalling issue so maybe it's software? idk but it's VERY annoying -_- Has anyone on here experienced these unfortunate issues?? Sound off below!
How did you even get a replacement one? I stood in line, was the fourth person at my best buy and almost didn't get one. I was the last person. They had a total of 4 phones. Every BB in my area for that matter (orange county, ca). I have a ring shaped "watermark" in my screen and I need to get it replaced. Other than that I love this thing. The plastic is not as scratch prone as the vibrant by the way. Also, crazy that this phone was literally manufactured one week ago and got shipped to best buy. That's a crazy turn over time. No wonder they only had 4 at launch.
My screen seems to sometimes not respond very well either, but it doesnt bother me enoigh to exchange.

Or if you got the Black Tie protection you can go in after 30 days, plus it covers accidental handling damage. SOLD.
Is the unresponsiveness caused by lag, like, if you press an icon, does it launch moments later? Because this is a problem that plagues the Vibrant. Gingerbread not living up to what it says it is?
Not sure which would be worse... an issue with Gingerbread lag or with the touch screen not registering.

BB's that don't normally carry and sell Tmobile are limited to 4 phones (my understanding) BB's like the one I went to in my area which sell tmobile had about 80 in stock which they didn't even sell thru half my guess. I was real cool with the staff they just exchanged no problem

NO this isn't lag in gingerbread lol.. This phone FLIESSSS out of the box. its the touchscreen. It becomes unresponsive when i tap anything or swipe. I barely have that issue in this phone than on the last one, but when it happens it's extremely annoying.
same issue here. i can't even unlock the screen now.
My NS is easily the most responsive Android phone I've ever used. Sucks you guys got duds. Luckily if something happens, apparently no one bought them here...
This is also sometimes happen on my HTC Desire. If it does not happen so often, then I think it is OK.
I also found that our finger might contribute with this problem. Too dry or too cold, for example. When that happen, I rub my finger and it works.

well, being as this never happened to me on either of the 2 vibrants and nexus one I owned prior to this phone, it tends to really bug the hell out of me.
Extremely responsive here. As responsive as my Vibrant & G2, if not better.

Screen actually feels more responsive, but that might be attributable to the fact that I cant actually feel my fingers.

I will do that. Early Incredibles and Evos had screen issues where they didnt respond without being "grounded." Quotes because a software update fixed it.
I'm on a couch right now if it matters.
Sent from my Nexus S
Yeah I'm huddling in a corner against the brutal MN cold...o wait....no Im watchin King of the Hill in my hot as hell (damn GF) house. My NS works just fine grounded or not. Responsive as hell.
the issue seems to happen very very little now. I might just keep it. If by sunday it doesn't continue i won't bother takin it back. But man, the last phone I had was unbearable. Literally happened every minute
So, took apart my xplay today because my screen was having issues and I wanted to see if a cable was loose.
Couldn't tell what was wrong, so I put it back together.
After putting it back together, I noticed a few things.
1. The power button that had always been loose was suddenly tight and in one spot. I thought the phone was just made that way. Turns out mine was improperly assembled right from the time I opened it. Gotta say, that button is far less annoying now. Anyone else have a loose power button?
2. My battery. Before taking it apart, my battery was at 19%. After putting it back together, suddenly my battery said 43%!! Suddenly it's got more? The heck is going on here?
3. My screen hasn't glitched again so far. Even though I didn't actually do anything other than unplugging/screwing and replugging/screwing some parts.
4. Originally, the left trigger felt "mushy" now it clicks like the right one.
On a side note, after seeing how the slider works on the inside, I recommend ONLY opening the slider when you're actually about to play a game, and not just fiddling around with the phone. The way it's designed makes it very obvious to me that the ribbon connecting the screen to everything else is easily destroyed. It wouldn't surprise me if my screen was having problems because of that ribbon.
Edit: NOPE. It's totally screwed.
Edit again: When the screen is glitching, moving the slider makes it start working some of the time. I'm becoming more and more convinced the ribbon cable inside the slider is the problem.

Hello,
This is my first post in this part of XDA.
My wife has an s7 Edge and the screen started flickering. I got out of this state messing with the power buttons etc. Mainly getting the touch screen to unlock the phone and it somehow cleared right up.
Is this a software issue? The screen when it came back is working as usual when I restarted the phone it became crap again.
Im think it maybe the lock screen causing this, I never heard of parts being corrupted.
I've attached a little clip of the screen.
Thoughts?
Thanks in advance!

Forgot to mention, it's not rooted completely stock.
So screen is messed up?
I had this issue. My phone fell from less than a foot off the ground and landed on the corner. Barely any force, but after that the screen would flicker intermittently. For a day or two it would come and go, and then it became permanent. It looked exactly like yours. If your bootloader/recovery/download mode flickers then it is a hardware problem, since the ROM isn't even loaded yet. With Verizon, your phone is fully covered from manufacturing defects for one year, so you should be able to get it replaced. Sorry bro. Wish I had better news.

Honestly with a screen issue like that, I really recommend taking it to the Verizon store and asking them about it. It seems like a hardware issue to me but that's just my opinion.
My screen has done some weird things as well fresh out of the box. I would have random areas of the screen pixelize until I smack the back of the phone. Even after root It will randomly do it every other month. My father in law had the same exact issue you're having. He brought it into T-mobile where the screen literally failed and went black in the employees hand. Neither his or my phone has ever been dropped. This is definitely a hardware issue. It's almost like a bad connection between the LCD and main board. Make verizon get you a new one before the screen goes black!
Okay...
Is it okay to say I can get a new screen and do that repair myself?
I wanna make sure that the issue I am having is just "buy a new screen and be good to go".
Thanks for your time!
