----------

if you have 4 bars in 2G mode, then nothing is wrong with your reception level. 3G mode is completely different from 2G mode all together. having 2-3 bars in 3G mode is perfectly normal. 3G coverage is week in general. You have nothing to be concerned about really.
In my situation I was having 1-2 bars in 2G mode and 1-2 bars in 3G mode. (Polaris). Also, in 3G mode signal frequently was degrated to the level where radio would automatically fallback to 2G mode and stay there. We have practicaly entire HTC range at our disposal. Every single HTC phone that has been manufactured Himalaya inclusive. As soon as I have noticed week GSM signal on Polaris, I have checked few others for the same issue, namely:
Kaiser, Wings, Niki, Excalibur, Cavalier, Himalaya, Pharos, Hermes, Trinity, VOX, Herald and few others.
Also, please note: Kaiser, Wings, Niki and Polaris were running indentical radio: stock standard 1.58.21.23. we keep our handsets consistent accross the board as much as we can.
Kaiser, Niki and Wings produced excellent reception quality results with full 3-4 bars in 2G and 3+ bars in 3G mode.(UMTS 2100 and HSDPA).
I have tested on 3 GSM networks in total.
At the same time, Polaris demonstrated very concerning results in both 2G and 3G mode. (see above).
That is why I have decided to further investigate this issue.
After flashing Murata PPAS radio, Polaris receives 3-4 bars in GSM mode indoors, full 4 bars outdoors, 3 bars indoors and 3-4 bars outdoors. This is perfectly in line with other phones based on the same hardware platform: Kaiser, Niki and Wings.
I hope it helps.
P.S. At this stage I come to conclusion that there are Polaris handsets that have issue and others that have not. No matter what radio they being flashed to. This is perfectly possible if manufacturer replaced some electronic chip in newer batches of phones. This is common practice for mass production. Therefore we have conflicting reports in both polls.
bottom line is: if your Polaris has no issues with GSM reception after non-Murta radio upgrade, then it will likely to keep good reception level with any radio.
Murata radio seems to address the issue with support for specific chip only in handset and will not improve reception level for every single Polaris out there.
Please accept my appologies for such a long winded post.

Hi guys,
I stumbled across this thread... and it seems that there are already a few people who tried to flash the Russian ROM and after that flushing a WWE ROM without radio and they reported that their Polaris was working again after that...
I am currently a little too anxious to try out myself with my Orbit 2 but I thought it would be an idea to point this possible solution in a separate thread and for those who have tried it, please vote so we have a better overview if this is a fix or not...
[edit]
I tried the Radio-only first (after I did the HardSPL flash) but I still get only 2 bars 3G signal strength. Only outdoors it's 4 bars and when walking it's changing between 3 and 4 bars. 2G (GSM) is always at 4 bars inside and outside.
After that I flashed the complete Russian ROM but everything stays the same. Also after hardresetting the device. Even after flashing it again and again :|
Now I think I tried every option which I found on this xda forums several times... maybe any1 has another idea?

No need for apologies well it gives me a better feeling that my Orbit2 is not really that bad, though I remember I had better reception in original state. Currently I'm trying to figure out why TomTom does not get any satellites. I have updated latest data with QuickGPS and chose Built-In GPS...
[edit]
took about half an hour to get the initial first gps fix... but from then on, it gets the first fix within 3-5 seconds... nice

its working again
Hi guys, i flashed the radio "Radio_Murata_PPAS_1.58.21.23.rar" and since its back to full strength!
i also lost all my data cuz updating the radio also hard resets ur device;-)good luck folks and dont throw ur polaris away!

Works greaaat ! Thank you so much guys!!
Ok here is my story... I bought a Cruise but the first thing I did was to unlock it (without testing it before!). So when I tried it I thought "what this piece of ****... the reception is so bad!!" but thought it was normal so I was already thinking about selling it on eBay Then I found this forum....
I've just flashed it with Radio_Murata_PPAS_1.58.21.23 and it works like a charm now, so thank you very much!
ps: before finding this post I tried each rom radio I found! thx again!

You guys are great! I flashed the radio only Murata, and it fixed everything.
I'm an US expat working in China. The entire import industry for the Polaris shutdown these few weeks because of this problem. There will be many happy Chinese HTC dealers tomorrow. Wooohooo!
Hearty, hearty thanks!!!!!

Yeah I extensively tested my Orbit 2 this weekend. I think I have no more problems now with it. So my vote to my own poll is actually wrong now... should be "... my 3G reception is back to normal and at full strength"
Thanks to everyone involved on Xda Dev!

At home with original rom I had 2 bars, after to Raramomo SFR and 1.64.08.21
still 2/1 bars in 3G, I have tested Murata and always 2/1 bars, so I have decided to keep 1.64.02.21 because I known its battery's drain and I known nothing about Murata.
Thanks a lot for you works

Murata radio is a life saver for wm6.1..awesome full 4 bars reception...highly recemmended for anyone have reception problems after updated their radio ..awesome

Just to clarify on this issue with low reception for some Polaris handsets:
Manufacturer has replaced some micro electronic components in some batches of Polaris.
Stock standard radio 1.58.21.23 and others has no support for those new components and therefore new handsets suffer low reception level issue.
1.58.21.23 radio Murata has support for new components included and maintains backward compatibility to earlier shipped handsets.
this radio will not affect ( improve or otherwise) reception quality for phones in older batches.
P.S. Radio is genuine.

Heyyooooo
Thank you VERY VERY VERY MUCH guys

Great news, but too bad my dealer hadn't heard about it when I picked mine up. Can you please point to where you downloaded that rom and what you used to flash it? I tried the first of the two links above and the RUU is unreadable (??????)...
Thanks.

My question is, why my (I got it early, I guess I have an old model) Polaris came shipped with 1.58.23.21 where the Murata Radio reads version number 1.58.21.23 which is lower and thus I assume older?

I think you are incorrect, I had other radio work on my polaris for little while in 3g before they dont work, I think it is got something to do with mty

Thank you for the great discovery. This Murata thing is working! I wanted to go with this device to the warranty, but i said to give this a shot, because my TC had the same simptoms discribed (only that i tested in GSM, i use 3g only for net).
Where i had signal between 70-80% (2-3 lines) now i have 100% (i use this percentage because i have batterystatus program that tells me in percentage). Where one hour ago my TC didn't discover any signal now it has 70% (2-3 lines).
I tested with dslreports.com/mspeed before and after:
GSM/GPRS: 29kbits before - 40kbits after
3g: 141kbits before - 200kbits after
My device information:
ROM VERSION: 1.25.405.1 WWE
ROM dare: 12/11/07
Radio Version: 1.58.21.23 (it writes the SAME version i had before, no murata no nothing)
Protocol version: 25.65.30.04W
I have to mention one thing: on my box (the box with the htc touch cruise in it), where it has the bar code, it writes Rev. A (from Revision A). I think maybe all devices with revision A will benefit from this radio and other revision not... please specify what it writes on your package.
Thanks again! Now I can say I am sattisfied with my investment (If you look in my posts I baught a s-h htc tytn I with battery drain problems... now is for sale for just 180 Euro in Romania... i can ship it if someone wants it)

thanks you for your help.
I had a bad reception in GSM mode.
I downloaded this rom.
Now in my room my reception is full (after 2-3 lines).
And my touch cruise detect a 3g area (no before this radio rom).
I try in my office this morning (no signal with the original rom).
I'am enjoy and this Rom resolve my problem.

Hello, im also expiriencing same reception problems, but in my system alredy says that i have radio rom 1.58.21.23, the phone never got flashed, can be alredy the murato radio rom ?!

did you buy "second-hand" so it might have been already used with a rom and been restored to "original" state before sold to you?
you can overwrite the rom even if it has the same version number.
i have no battery issues with the murata radio only rom.

ROM updated, now weaker signal - Please Help with Stack Q

Hello, first the details:
T-Mobile-branded unit, (PW10B1) running on Roger Wireless in Ontario, Canada. I got this unit over the weekend, and a few people reported calls that i had completely missed. after preliminary reading here i found a 'safe' looking ROM (RUUv2.07_CEv4.01.16) update to this:
ROM: 4.01.16 ENG
date: 02/04/04
Radio: 6.25.02
Protocol: 324e4
My issue:
The phone now displays a signal strength that was even weaker than before! please help with -
1. I've tried to look back at the posts with no luck on finding details about the radio stack options - are there any RSU updates that have proven to improve this issue?
2. I see people with a slightly different ROM titles (ROM 4.00.16 / Radio 6.25.2) are you having signal strength issues?
3. where would i find past versions of ROMs? like the 4.00.16 i mentioned above?
4. would it be better to try to update the radio stack separately?
thanks very much! sorry for the long post
Be very careful with radio stacks, if you mess up you could end up with a pda and no phone, are you sure that you have a bad signal, it might be an idea to experiment as I dont think the signal meter is terribly accurate in reality.
You should know that the signal strength display in WM2003 shows fewer bars for the same signal. It doesn't mean that your received signal is weaker. With WM2003 I've had great reception with one (tiny) bar, and usually acceptable reception with no bars.
thanks for the reply guys - i noticed i noticed the same things in its use yesterday - i carried on a complete conversation with no bars showing... crazy.
anyways, in that case i am pretty well happy with it. I think the test will be when i start using it heavily during my commute into and around Toronto.
again, thanks for the help

TouchCruise signal Solution...

Hi, in my country there is Only GSM 900mhz Signal. So I don't care 3G.
I have recently acquire a HTCTouchCruise. What happens is that the signal strength is very Low. For Example in indoors there is no signal at all where my Blackberry8320 works like a charm.
The original ROM that came was Aserg In Russian. I don't Speak Russian..
What do I do was to upgrade to Sirius uDk R7. The same situation almost no Signal. NO improvement at all. The camera was not working until I change to Radio version 1.59.x.x. Even with 1.59 No signal improvement ....
The solution seems to be a Murata Radio Version. But R7 requires a Radio version 1.59.x.x but all Murata version I found was for 1.58.x.x. Even with Murata 1.58.25.14 or 1.58.21.23 the signal was the same.
What I am asking is some successfully configurations that IMPROVE RADICALLY the signal. My TouchCruise looks like an IPOD with poor signal...
ROM VERSION???
RADIO VERSION????
Some tips and Solution.
THANKS in ADVANCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=470510
Why is this your recommendation to improve signal??????
Sorry, i was in a hurry.. Why does this ROM will be the best for improve my signal. Did you have the same trouble and this one help you???
THANKS!!!!!!!!!!!
You can use any ROM based on 1.31 or 1.60 drivers with 1.58.xx.xx murata Radio ROM.
ROMs based on 3.13, 3.18 or 3.19 drivers only work with 1.59.xx.xx Radio ROMs.
Sascha
I will give it a try and then will post the result....
Posting results....
Hi folks... NEED HELP....
First or all I installed the original rom
* RUU_Polaris_HTC_SPA_3.13.412.0_radio_sign_25.85.30.07_1.59.42.15_Ship.exe
In a short story the same NO signal in my phone where almost any phone catch signal. Cant try 1.58.x.x Radio because they were designed for 1.60 drivers.
then I pass to
* c_shekhar_Pola_16021014aCS_Build21014_Public.rar
I made every step posible. Downgrade the Radio version and then Installed the ROM. No change!!!!
Tried then
* Radio_Murata_PPAS_1.58.21.23 and then * Radio_Murata_1.58.25.14. Nothing change also...
The rom is great but the same signal.
If I try to catch the signal inside my room what i get is "Denied, Searching" but if I go outside I catch the signal and can call and check balance. As soon as I enter in to the House the signal remain the same but the phone is not reachable. If I try to check balance inside Home with the signal that remains from outside is says:
"Waiting......
Session Terminated"
Please could someone indicate me what to do to recover signal I leave in a City so lost signal here is no usual.
Hi, hell.cu
There is No point in updating two threads. Looks like you have a hardware problem. Get in 'touch' with HTC support as there seems to be no solution available at present with software. Good Luck ....!
that is too bad.. I cant get back to HTC. i didnt buy there... So there is no solution????
Hi people. Just to inform you that havent found any solution... Just send the phone back. Too bad it was a really nice phone.
I love my BlackBerry 8320 so I maintain this phone.
For the record I believe that HTC makes good phones, desing, funionality and even software. But I have seen to many problems also in hardware respect HTC phones. First was a Excalibur and know is the Polaris.
No luck over here...
Maybe there is just no witchcraft to do my friend.
Maybe the signal strength is just the way it is and can't be improved.
I have same problem here and noticed that it is very depending on the weather how strong the signal is.
If you have the same trouble you wouldn't have that phone. Just in the House i have no signal. It is like if i doesn't have phone at all.
Only in the middle of the street i have signal.

have you tried playing around with your Settings/Phone? there is a band selection that can be selected either manually or automatically.
Yes I play around like a monkey. But nothing seems to change the Signal strength. I think that some (not all) Polaris has this issues.

Problems with Radio Reception

hey,
i've changed my network provider a few days ago. before the change and also now i'm using the Duttys Topaz WM6.5 Leo R0 WWE rom.
since i've changed the provider, i have problems with my radio reception. when i'm inside a building i mostly do not have any radio reception at all.
i've also tried another radio version and at the moment i've installed the original htc rom. still the situation is unimproved.
do you know why?
thanks for ur answers!
If you have changed provider...and your phone is the same, suddenly your network reception falls down.... then it's obvious what is causing the problem I suppose. Your operator doesn't have a proper coverage.
Yup, It's almost certainly your network
You've done all that you can to diagnose the issue you have; Essentially, you've got poor coverage compared to your old provider.
I'd contact them soon (today, if possible) and make them aware of the situation. If you're not happy, you can either spend money on a range extender (you may not be able to install these in your workplace), or change provider back. Call them sooner rather than later, though. They may have a small time period (in the UK called a "Cooling Off" period) before contracts become binding, allowing you to test services and make up your mind before you're tied in to the contract.

yes I did. my friends, who have the same provider, have a really high reception whereas I have none. so it can't be the coverage of the provider..
I don't know what to do :/
If it is not due to the hardware, HTC could solve the problem with a forthcoming version of radio or Rom.
I hope that this solution will be implemented with the next official ROM WM 6.5!
Hi
If others have good reception and yours is none with the same providers something is wrong somewhere, the HTC Touch Diamond 2 isn't that bad for reception, I've found quite good in very marginal areas.
You need to check your phone isn't set to just 3G, but Auto. It might be you have no 3G coverage but your phone is set not to switch to 2G which other phones you are comparing against are using.
To check this go to settings and click the Communications option, scroll down to Band and then make sure the settings are Auto and Auto. Has that helped.

Phil

Signal is AWFULL! (When Handled)

I've copied this from the Vodafone (UK) forum - but I don't seem to be the only one with a proble... Any help would be greatly appreciated!
I've had my HD2 for just a few days now and I can honestly say that unless something is sorted soon I won't be using it much longer! I have exactly the same problem in both DT1 and BH20 post codes. Singal is good and strong when the device is left on a desk/table etc... I can have FULL signal but lift the device up and it drops to 3, 2, 1 and then no signal...
I can make perfect phone calls using hands free, but can't even send or recieve a text if I pick the phone up. We're talking less than 24" of movement here so it has to be device related!
Comparing this to the HTC Diamond. The Diamond although showing slightly less signal (2-3bars) is much more stable and non-reactive to being handled.
I'm using the very latest updates with HSDPA/HSUPA disabled.
It would seem that HTC has dropped the ball here.
(HSPL - ROM 1.66)
Vodafone thread - http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=48152&st=0
I replied to your post in the Vodafone forum assuming you were still on the stock 1.43 ROM, but if you are on 1.66 then I am not sure what to suggest as you mentioned that it happens in multiple areas which seem to be a fair way apart and therefore would be on different transmitters (unless you are unfortunate enough to be in several areas all suffering from faulty cell-towers).
I know mine drops a bar when I pick it up but not 2 to 3 and then to no signal...
Maybe you should contact HTC about a replacement? Dont bother with Vodafone as they'll offer you a Blackberry 9700 if they cant fix it...
SOunds faulty to me. There is sometimes a small drop in signal for me when the phoe is cupped in my hand, but not more than 1 bar, usually none.
I'd get on to your provider for a warranty replacement.
Nothing such here. And I'm in a low reception place here, seems it even does better than my previous Kaiser.
Seems that Vodafone is a bit of a crappy network in terms of its compatibility with phones! If it's not text messages staying in the outbox it's data disconnecting/not working and no picture messaging NOW rubbish signal....jeez. I've been on T-Mobile with the HD2 since it arrived in november and haven't had one single problem with texts, data, signal....anything. I've had two different handsets in that time too since I sold the first upgrade.
In all seriousness though I do also have a prototype pro.three (pre-release HD2) and that suffers from low signal/signal dropout so in this instance it seems that you have a faulty unit.
I do hear a lot of moaning Voda users on these forums though which makes me quite likely to steer clear when I get my upgrade in a few weeks.

Vodafone thread - http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=48152&st=0
It doesn't look like its JUST my phone here...
Outside this problem is not half as bad.
Lots of people across the world are having problems with the SMS thing.
Its also not limited to the HD2 handset as I had it on Kaiser when I updated that handset to WM6.5

signal reception seems better (vodafone) however a few including me have an isue of static noise when someone speaks. I have this on 2.07 and 2.08 radios - not sure if its network related. I'm using a custom rom, and have no choise but to use 2.07 or higher, unless i revert back to a previous rom.

If you can flash ROMs try Leo Lite V2.2 WWE with the 2.08.50.08_2 radio.
I'm in a very patchy area and behind solar glass and the above setup gives me signal strength and stability better than any other ROM/radio combo or phone I have ever had. This includes many other HTC and Nokia phones.
I never seem to miss a call now and the SMS problemis gone although I believe that is partly to do with the cooked ROM setup.
Also I can pull in H and 3G signals that I could not before.

Does the ROM actually play any part in this though or is it just the RADIO upgrade? I've just gone over to 2.08 but using the stock HTC 1.66 ROM
have you checked that the battery cover is on correctly? there are to prongs on the inside of it that make it part of the arial

The Rom affects the sms issue (I believe) and my current LeoLite ROM (now 2.3) shows no sms problem and sits well with the radio I mentioned as it unlocks the extra memory.
Addendum
There is a link with ROM and radio through the rilphone.dll that is cooked in to the ROMs.
e.g. The correct rilphone for T-mobileUK will assist in accessing the T-mobile network with the correct protocols required for the services on that network. And same would go for all other operators (who may or may not have their own rilphone file configured to their requirements). I am unaware of any signature that would differentiate between the files, however, it's safe to assume that a rilphone.dll extracted from a stock T-mobileUK ROM would be the appropriate one for their network access.
I haven't seen a lot of experimentation on this although I have tried out various files on the ROMs I have flashed without any real conclusion emerging.
The combination that I mention is just a solid setup that works well for me on my operators network in my location.

Improve X1 Reception (without flashing rom)

Hey guys, came across this interesting technique the other day....
Been living in an area with poor 3G so tempted to try this but i still have warranty on my phone so i want to void it incase of the cracks, keyboard problems and other known bugs that plague this phone.
Has anyone tried this? Can you guys give us a brief of the results?

probably your reception area. ^^
but higher radio-version doesn't automatically equal better reception. it depends on your provider and your local conditions. for some 1.16 is better, for some 1.14, for some even 1.12 (or is it 1.10?). there's also a hacked 1.17 from *some other htc-device* around. (since it's hacked, the version-number will still show 1.16 after flashing)
you have to try them all out, monitor your reception-quality (cell & gps) as well as the battery-drain it gives you.
using the rilphone according to radio-number is always a good idea, but: 1.16-rilphone breaks messaging and 1.17 doesn't exist for the x1. so you have to use 1.14-rilphone for radios 1.14 and above. (never use radios & rilphones posted in other device-threads!!!)
