Use wifi without suscribing to data package?

its been posted before, but i wanted to clarify, so dont yell at me... (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=325973)
I dont suscribe to data, but want to use wi fi. so if i use that no data thing, is it possible?

at times i would just airplane mode at times and just use wifi, even for calls. So yeah you can do that...

so wifi on the verizon mogul is free and nothing will be charged to me for using it. (I dont have the data plan)

If you don't have a data block, you run the risk of of connecting to EvDo and getting charged 'pay as you go'.
But then there was a change to the data plan about a month ago and I hear it is now nearly impossible to NOT have a real data plan.

yeah thats what ive heard. It seems like if you want a ppc or smartphone that your have to get the data package to even get the phone. thanks for the quick response.

I just switched from Qwest to Verizon and got upgraded to the 6800 from the 6700. To get around the data plan you can use the pay as you go just change the dial up number to anything but #777 and you never connect to the network and don't get charged.

I dont have a data plan either. I use the wifi all the time. the main reason I got this phone was for the wifi capability. I am curious how to use it uner flight mode because it never lets me..

This is my first contribution to xda-forums! I'm glad I can help at all when I've benefitted so much... Thanks to all!
NOTE: After the following steps, Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably will want to use Nodata, and NOT the following solution. You just might have to open Nodata and disable the data connection every time you soft-reset.
I was finally able to completely 100% block the 3g data connection on my Verizon XV6800 (aka Mogul aka Titan) was the following three steps:
1. The key culprit is HTC_CM_Guardian.exe in the windows directory. I couldn't edit it or delete it via Total Commander file explorer, but I was able to rename it! This makes the OS unable to find the program when it tries to re-set the Data connection settings.
2. Under Settings > Connections > Connections > Advanced > "Select which networks are automatically used," hit "Select Networks."
3. Under "Programs that automatically connect to the Internet should connect using:" hit "New...".
4. Enter any name you want (mine's "nodata!") and leave all the other settings blank.
5. To be safe, you may have to delete the Verizon Or "Internet" Connection on the Tasks Tab of Settings > Connections > Connections. Save and exit.
Voila! Wifi, yes; 3g, no! No more nasty billing surprises.
Modaco's Nodata program is awesome, but the problem was that HTC_CM_Guardian.exe re-enabled the data connection every time I reset the phone. Plus, HTC_CM_Guardian.exe would also thwart any effort to block data via the "Connection Settings." By renaming HTC_CM_Guardian.exe and creating a "nodata!" connection that programs auto-connecting to the internet would try to use (and fail), we get three results:
1. Modaco's Nodata doesn't even register that a data connection exists! For this reason, if you occasionally use 3g, you probably won't to use this solution.
2. When you reboot, the OS is unable to mess-up your "Connection Settings", so
3. Unless you have an active wifi connection, programs will try to connect to the Internet using the "nodata!" settings, which, being empty, will fail, exactly as planned.

simple solution
It's a lot easier to check the "use dialing rules" box. I had a HTC Touch that I used this on and when I lost that, went to a Mogul. I love the wifi on it! I worked as a ATS rep for Sprint for 5 years and half the time when a windows phone would not connect to vision, it was the checked dialing rules box or a wrong number like the customer's own number instead of the dialing string. I tried just deleting the dialing string but even a soft reset caused the phone to recreate the #777 as well as the phone as modem #777. I hated the phone connecting on it's own, bumping the wrong button in my pocket, and I know this will work every time. EVDO data transfer charges without a plan will cap at $75 now but still why take the chance? If you absolutely have to get on the web and there's no wifi around, break down, call *2 and add a $15 vision plan, do what you need to like find a location with Live search then cancel it the next day. The plan will be prorated from when you added it to when it was cancelled. The only hitch is you have to allow your device to IOTA successfully while in a Sprint service area once to get the data settings in the phone which entails the data transfer again. Ahhh, I'm liking the wifi more and more......

How to Disable Modem Tracking

I once read how to disable the tracking as your phone as a modem. I used pdanet and got caught by Sprint for an extra 35 dollars. Did not download any huge files just email and surfing for a couple of weeks while out of town. UI read that their is a registry edit that you can change so your carrier can't tell that you are using the phone as a modem. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I used the service fine on my treo 700wx but when I switched to the mogul I got caught.

You should double-check that you have a data plan on your account. Sprint can't detect tethering via PDANet.

I do have the unlimited data plan

I believe that there is a post in PPCGeeks about deleting a registry link for IS and that getting rid of at least the old connection error. Not so sure about tracking just yet... I haven't kept up with it as I haven't needed to tether just yet.

try this:
go to
\\\registry\HKLM\SOFTWARE\OEM\WModem\
and change these all to a value of zero. They will probably each be set to 1.

Then you can choose Phone as Modem as your default connection. This will also enable to to use Internet Sharing with your laptop or desktop.
One caveat however, and I am not sure why this happens, but sometimes you can get the error 67 registration failure message from sprint when using this to connect to a laptop. I would HIGHLY suggest getting a good backup software such as Sprite Backup or another one someone could suggest before using this with your laptop. I have found that if that situation does occur, you'll either have to restore your backup, or (if you didn't back up) hard reset your phone if you ever want to have an internet connection again. Something seems to lock up for good when that happens.
So, that aside, I get faster speeds than before using PAM as my normal everyday connection. I rarely connect my phone to my laptop, so I rarely have to restore a backup. I have noticed that I can connect to my laptop without ANY third party software (unless you count the internet sharing app as 3rd party.)
Here's how it works for me, I usually follow this routine when connecting to my laptop:
1) make a backup
2) connect my phone to the pc (ENSURE THE PC HAS NO INTERNET ACCESS)
3) activesync, or WMDC if you have Vista
4) start Pocket Internet Explorer on your Mogul so your connection to Sprint occurs.
5) Once the home page loads (mine's XDA ) you can then open the Internet Sharing application.
6) Once in the Internet Sharing application, choose USB for the PC Connection in the drop down box
7) Choose Phone as Modem as the Network Connection from the drop down box.
8) Hit Connect in the bottom left hand corner (or hit the left softkey)
9) Your laptop will do the rest and you will have the Internet at your fingertips in no time. Enjoy!

under connection settings, and manage exisiting connections there are 2 options, "Sprint PCS" and "Phone As A Modem" i changed mine from auto pick to always use Sprint PCS (not sure what they has to do with anything as they both dial the same number)
regardless, i dont think sprint even lets you use PAM if you dont have the tethering plan (unless you use something like pdanet) and if they did decide to charge you for it im sure theyd hit you for more than 35 dollars, considering the tethering plan is additional 40 a month in the first place

I have used PDANet for several months and have not been charged. I surf the web, stream videos, all day while at work. No charges yet.

If you're referring to me posting crap I don't know about, I DONT have a tethering plan, and have used this method since I got the mogul a long time ago. I have yet to be charged by sprint. Have you tried this yourself to see if it's 'crap?'
Please if you know the single step to allow internet sharing to work, please post it. Also, being a D!CK doesn't get you very far here.

pdanet is NOT necessary.
tethering (via Internet Sharing, NOT MODEM) works (with a small hack), straight out of the box,..

you could delete the whole 'wmodem' key and see no difference (to all, i do NOT suggest doing this unless you know what you're doing)
the two connections in the 'Sprint' profile..
'Sprint PCS' and 'Phone as Modem' differ only in the name. they both accomplish the EXACT same thing, specifically, dial #777, enter blank username/pword/domain.
you could delete them and create your own connection that dials #777 and see no difference at all (to all, i do NOT suggest doing this unless you know what you're doing)

First time I tethered I got the error 67, and it didn't go away. Apparently the system Sprint uses to assing your device/connection a username and password doesn't always sync right.
I created a vision username/password on the Sprint website and use that for my connection, and removed the "guardian" application to prevent it from messing up the connection. Since then all has been fine.

Sorry for any confusion. Thanks for posting that link, I'll check it out.
my 'FIX' works to a T when I follow it correctly. It allows me to tether without any charges and without PDANet. That's the reason I posted it.

It's all so simple.... You must have Activesync installed on the PC for the needed drivers, then just plug the usb into PC/laptop and not the phone yet.
1. Simply Open IE on Titan to start Data link (Or to eliminate this step Do luv2chill's Reg Edit)
2. Open Internet sharing and hit connect
3. Plug usb into Titan
Always hit disconnect on Titan Before unplugging (unless you did Luv2chill's edit, recommended)
Leave settings in IS to Sprint PCS not PAM or they can tell.

It is as simple as burrito is saying. Delete that registry entry and it will work. I plug my phone into the pc, cancel Activesync connection, hit Internet Sharing and wa-la tethered Mogul. Make sure you don't spike your usage as some have said this may tip Sprint off. You also might want an unlimited data plan, SERO is great.

this is INCORRECT

I could be mistaken but I swear the latest version of WMwifirouter fixes the reg for you so that wont happen.

Changing some settings on the 6800 won't stick.

Hey all. I've searched posts and can't find anything but what other people used for a quick backyard fix to get them past. Here's the deal. My phone connects to the Verizon Data Network all the time, even when I'm connected to WiFi. On my Apache, I could go into Settings, Connections, Connections and set the advanced settings so programs needing to connect automatically would use My Work Network instead of Verizon Wireless. However, on my 6800, I change the same setting for the same effect and as soon as I hit ok, it reverts back so it tries connecting to the net via cellular again instead of via WiFi. This isn't the only setting I've found that won't stick, but I can't remember what those ones are. Has anyone found the cause to this and the solution? Possibly a file that's write-protected and shouldn't be or something. I don't have a data plan and can't afford one so I really need this to change and still be able to get MMS when I need to (don't want to disable data completely on Verizon's end). Help!

Use Wifi for Internet instead of data

Is there anyway to make the phone connect to the internet using wifi before it will use alltel?
I know how to set my wifi adapter to access the internet.. But alltel data is always active and I cannot even utilize the wifi feature.
The only way i have been able to get it to use Wifi for internet is if I delete the alltel data settings. But i need them inthere incase I am not bear an open access point.
Ive searched the forum and found no relavent information. If I have missed it, please direct me to it... Thanks!

Just delete the connection. If you have a stock rom the connection will come back on its own after a restart. If on custom rom then just install an alltel carrier cab if you want it back.

So there isnt any way to keep the data and make it secondary? I go in and out of wifi coverage all day and it would be nice to have it connect to data if needed. thanks for the reply.

nodata utility. Lets you disable your data and just use wifi. Then when you want it back you just toggle it to enable. Worked good for me

Lol, thanks for the info, i havent been here in a couple days, but I will try it out...
I had my internet setup to use wifi before i flashed my phone the last time, but when I deleted the data connection this time, it did not work..
I obviously did something else and I cant remember what it was. I found where I could "delete settings" for alltel even after I deleted the main connection. I think that did it..
Now after that I could connect to facebook app via wifi, but IE would not work.. For that I had to go in and change the way apps that need to connect to a private network to My ISP as well.
It just seems to me that there is an easy way to do this... Would also be nice to be able to tell and change whether a program is connecting automatically to the internet or private network. I wonder if that is a registry setting that can be changed..

I also just have removed the password from the data connection. Rarely, I mean rare, when I use data as I enabled WiFi first. If I really want to use data, I punch in the password.
There was also a real cool app I saw that I forgot to tag the thread. But it would do things based on the cell tower you were using. I thought it might have had controls for WiFi as well, it definitely did for ring setting.

[Q] TETHERING v ERROR CODE 619

I have not been successful tethering. I have been assured that my data plan remains unchanged from my successful tethering of my TP2 - unlimited domestic data and tethering. I get the following message:
"Error 619: A connection to the remote computer could not be established, so the port used for this connection was closed. For further assistance, click More Info or search Help and Support Center for this error number."
Are other AT&T folks able to tether? Any suggestions?

Has anyone tethered their Focus?

Have you installed the proper USB drivers?

I get that error very occasionally. I usually just replug the USB cable and I'm good to go. Make sure you download and install the Samsung USB drivers from the tethering thread.

sounds like a drivers problem. I had the same issue for a while. Couldnt get the right drivers to install. Once you do get the drivers installed properly, your focus will tether

Thanks for your replies. Here’s what I’ve tried so far.
I printed and carefully followed the instructions here:

I suspect that the drivers loaded successfully when I initially paired the Focus, but just in case, I removed and reinstalled the driver from the link on the Mobility Digest article. No change.
Because the drivers appear to be working correctly in that I am able to enter the suggested settings and they appear to be attempting to dial, I have begun to suspect that the problem is with AT&T.
I have checked my account. It reflected the change of devices from the Tilt 2 to the Focus. I am on the following plan:
PDA Personal Max /w Unl M2M Messaging - $74.99/month
“Access and manage your personal e-mail from up to 3 accounts with a PDA wireless handheld. Send, receive forward and reply to messages while on the go. Plans include text, IM or video messages with Unlimited M2M Messaging and/or tethering options*.
*Tethering enables you to connect your wireless device to your laptop via Bluetooth or a connection cable. Certain usage restrictions may apply. See Explanation of Rates and Charges for details.”
I do not understand the “and/or tethering options” and I could not locate the “Explanation of Rates and Charges” I called AT&T. They were unable to explain my “and/or tethering”, but tried to get me to switch from my unlimited data plan and stated that the plan I am on is no longer available. I hate to give up my data plan, but hate not being able to tether worse. They also advised me that the Focus will not tether.
Because I never had issues tethering the Tilts, I told them that I would be switching back to the tilt in the hope that this would get tethering reactivated. They made me give them the IMEI of my tilt and test my voice and data connections. After the call, I put my sim card back in the Focus and tried to tether. Voice and data work fine, but as for tethering - No Change.
I still have absolutely no idea why I can’t tether. I would very much appreciate any other suggestions. For those of you who have been successful, please – Which data plan are you on?

AT&T makes you pay $20 ON TOP of your $20-30 for your data plan for tethering. I'm guessing thats what the "tethering options" is referring to.
