PROBLEM SOLVED, APPEARS TO BE A NETWORK ISSUE
New question posted in second post.
I've searched the forums and the internet extensively without any help so here I am, asking for the community's help.
I can activesync just fine (ActiveSync 4.2) and am able to connect to the internet just as well from my Wizard via WiFi however I am unable to access the internet from my Wizard via ActiveSync passthrough.
I have selected "This computer is connected to the internet" in ActiveSync and, when viewing my network connections, I see the ActiveSync connection is in working order (IP address: 169.254.2.2).
I am unable to connect to the internet as well as my LAN because I tried pulling up my router's web interface in PIE only to receive this error:
"Unable to connect due to an unknown error [some crazy error number]."
I'm unable to connect to the internet with any application (tried sending email, updating pocket weather, egress, etc).
I've also uninstalled and reinstalled ActiveSync.
I haven't always had this problem and I can only think of two things I've done in the interim: I'm at a different house thus my desktop connects to a different network and I've installed (and subsiquently uninstalled) HitchHiker b.41.
Anyone have any ideas?

EDIT: I'm ridiculous.
After trying it out at work, I'm left to assume that the problem is a network issue (I'm able to connect at work).
This, however, brings me to a different question. I currently have four network connections set up: Blank, MEdia Net, My Work Network, My ISP. I have "Blank" set as the connection to use for both programs that connect automatically to the inernet as well as for those that connect automatically to my work network EDIT: this is my problem ... I had to set up "programs that connect to my work network ..." to use the work network connection (obvious?) I always assumed this meant programs that would only be accessing my work (I.E. a VPN client).. My question is that in order for me to connect to the internet from work, I have to add my proxy settings to the "Blank" connection. Adding them to the "My Work Network" connection does nothing. This leads me to believe that setting the "This computer connects to ..." dialog in ActiveSync accomplishes nothing. Can anyone help me with this? I'd like to connect using my work proxy while I'm at work and no proxy while I'm at home (is that too much to ask) but, apparently, selecting the appropriate value in the "This computer connects to" dialog in ActiveSync isn't enough.
Hi, I recently got my first WM device with Wi-fi (T-Mobile Vario III). I've been trying to get Wi-fi working with my network, but it doesn't seem to want to play!
I'm using WPA with AES, and using 802.1X authentication (my access point connects to my FreeRADIUS server). The same Linux box that runs the RADIUS server also runs the DHCP server for the network.
I'm using EAP-TLS authentication for the network (I based the setup for the network on this http://wiki.freeradius.org/WPA_HOWTO).
I've installed my root CA cert and intermediate CA cert (not covered in the howto, but I prefer to use and intermediate 'working' CA "just in case" ) on the Vario III. I also generated a client certificate/key for the Vario and installed it successfully on the device.
I then went on to Settings->Connections->Wi-fi and chose to add a new connection and did the following:
1) Entered the network name (SSID) and selected the "This is a hidden network" checkbox (also set it to be connecting to "The Internet" - I had to go to the network adapters tab as well and set the wi-fi adapter to be "The Internet" from "Work")
2) Selected authentication to be WPA and Data Encryption to be AES.
3) Selected the EAP type to be "Smart Card or Certificate" and went to properties. In the properties box I was shown the only personal certificate I have (i.e. the client certificate that I just installed for network authentication)
I then connect to the network, and get a User Name/Domain dialog (I don't really understand why). This is pre-populated with my name, but I've tried the following in this box (the only way to get it back after having entered something appears to be a hard reset - but there must be another way?):
1) The default provided (i.e. my name)
2) The CN for the personal certificate
3) Nothing
In each case I leave the 'Domain' field empty. With all three of the above the FreeRADIUS server reports successful authentication and the Vario III appears to be connected to the network. If I go to Settings->Connections->Wireless LAN, on the Advanced tab it says that it is 'Associated to network'
The problem is that even though I'm connected to the network and have been allocated an IP address (I have my DHCP server assign a specific IP address to specific MAC addresses), I cannot connect to any websites - I don't have anything over than Pocket IE installed on the device yet. I can't even connect to the management page for the AP that the Vario III is connected to.
This setup works perfectly from a WinXP box.
Has anyone got any ideas on what could be going wrong, or advise on how I can troubleshoot? Anyone know if there are logs stored on the device for wireless connectivity (either a log file or something like the event viewer in XP)?

I have WiFi setup and running on my device, XDA Orbit, using WPA and AES.
First of all, whilst inside the Network Adapters tab, make sure that:
'My network card connects to': WORK
Secondly, in 'tap adapter to modify settings' you'll need to click on a particular network adapter card inorder to configure it.
In my case, I chose the SDIO WLAN Wireless Adapter. I then clicked the radio button 'Use specific IP address' and configured the IP address of my device, exactly as it is assigned in my Netgear wireless router.
If you haven't assigned a specific IP address to your device, just click the radio button next to 'Use server-assigned IP address'.
On the 'Advanced' tab of Wireless LAN, mine also reads 'Associated to network' as the status. It also has the MAC address of my device, followed by its IP address. The three fields were all filled up automatically, by the router. I never filled this up. However, I configured the router with the necessary details.
Troubleshooting:
1. Ping your device from your PC or notebook.
The idea is to be able to see if there is communication between your router and the device.
Example: at c:\>ping ......... (.....being the name or IP address of your device as entered in the router)
2. If you have a firewall, disable it now and ping again. This step is necessary because the firewall could be stopping your device from connecting to the router if it is not configured in the firewall's access list.
3. Go to your PC/notebook and type: ipconfig /all at the command prompt.
Hopefully, you should see the device's name come up as well as other parameters, including its MAC address.
4. Ensure that the device is allowed access to your internal network and configured as such, inside the router, using MAC address filtering. This means that you MUST ensure that the correct MAC address of the device has been entered.
Summary:
1. Configure your device inside the router - name/mac address or name/IP address
2. Configure your firewall to accept connections from the device
3. Ping the device as well as the router
4. If you have another computer, try and see if you can connect to the router from there.
5. Ensure that the router, PC or PPC are all on the same subnet. This is crucially important for communication amongst the devices.
By typing ipconfig /all, you will be able to determine as to whether all the computers as well as the PPC on your network are on the same subnet.
Many a network have failed through this problem.

Hello... Got a Touch recently, and doing research found this forum. One of the best findings lately for me: already flashed the phone with a WM6.1 ROM and updated my radio successfully. But I have a problem (even before the flashing):
I can't connect to my wifi. I have a belkin N router. Have tested almost everything: updated the router's ROM, updated the phone's radio, turned off security, assigned manual IP's, etc, but with no success... so I'm running out of ideas. I can connect to another people's wifi's tho.
Anything I have missed? Just an incompatibility? (which means I'm screwed)

I tried to connect my Touch to my old netgear 802.11b router at home without any success. I did a lot of "googling" on the subject, and only found that many concluded that it wasn't possible to do so.
Also, I have AT&T, and they are offering free hotspot WIFI connectivity to their customers (which is intended for laptops). My touch detects the WIFI signals, but I have yet to find out how to make a connection.
It seems like there should be a way to do it somehow though!

pl, when you go into your Settings -> Connections -> Wi-Fi, can you see your wireless network being detected?
The only things that spring to mind at the moment, are the basics for normal connection ...
1. Network type (B/G/N)
2. Authentication (password)
3. MAC Filtering
Here's what I would do ...
1. Reset router (usually has default button at the back).
2. Set it up for DHCP (sometimes cures a lot of problems).
3. Set simple WEP with password.
4. Obviously a network name (make sure it is not hidden, also make sure AP is enabled)
5. Set channel
6. Set mode (Network type) to mixed.
7. Save and reboot.
8. Soft reset Touch
9. Go to Settings -> Connections -> Wireless LAN
10. Activate Wireless and see if your SSID (network name) pops up. From here you can see signal quality and IP (to make sure you got it from DHCP).
Give it a shot and let us know what happens.

Strange, I have never had problems with mine (had it connected to a couple AP's already). In fact, it's easier than connecting my laptop to a WLAN.
You have anything else that can connect to your Router? pc or something.
My Touch can connect to other routers, and I have 2 PCs at home which connect to my Belkin N router, I just can't connect my Touch to it.

I have an HTC Touch that can connect to other hotspots, but not to my home Belkin router. Sometimes, if there is another connection available, it can see the router, and says that it is Available, but cannot connect; other times it won't even see it. Please follow the steps given below to update the firmware and configure the router:
We recommend that you update the firmware from a computer that is connected to the router with an ethernet cable.
Please download the latest firmware on the router from the link given below. Download the file "3.01.29":

and save it to the computer.
- To update the firmware, log on to the router`s web interface by typing in http://192.168.2.1 in the address bar of the browser. The computer should be
connected to the router with an ethernet cable.

- By default, the password is blank. Click the "Submit" button.
- Click on "Firmware Upgrade" under the option "Utilities".

3. Version number of the router. You would find the version number on the bottom of the device. It would be a number in a series of thousands with a prefix “ver.”.
4. If the internet connection is stable on the computers using the router?
5. If the HTC Touch detects and connects to other networks in the neighborhood?

That really is strange. The way I see it, WLAN is a standard. It's like BT, any headset should work with any BT phone, as would any wireless device work with any wireless device
Maybe force the router to only broadcast in G (or even B) and see what happens? (I know, I'm reaching now )

Same problem here, N1 Vision router and XDA Orbit, both running on latest firmware. Wrote to Belkin support describing the issue. Here's their reply:

I just got my Touch Diamond from Sprint and am having the same issue. I have a Belkin N+ Router that is in g/b/n wireless setting.
The phone just simply will not see the SSID even if you put the settings in there manually. What it does see however is the guest SSID my router emits and connected to it without any issues. The guest account is a feature of my router gives friends access to the web but denies access to internal network.
Out of curiosity changed my routers wireless bands to only G/B and all of a sudden my phone can see the network. Unfortunately for me I rely on the N part of my network to connect my laptops and do streaming HD so leaving it on G/B is not acceptable.
I just connect via the guest account, anyways its not like my phone would have been able to see the internal home network anyways.

I have the same issue.
Used to use a D_Link G router, but recently upgraded to a belkin N-draft one.
My laptop connects on G, and my desktop on N, so I can't switch N off and just use G.
Anyone found a solution yet? It's bugging the hell out of me!
I posted a fix on page one that should work. You have to update your firmware.

have you enabled easypairing, (WiFi easypairing : Enabled) if so turn it off or press the required button sequence on the router to connect.
hi there , i can see that my Polaris is connected to my router via wpa2-psk
as it's MAC and ip are showed in router
I also see that an IP is assigned to my Polaris , but i cannot surf the internet

so i have to manualy set ip's and gateway and dsn to my
pda to match the computer which is the gateway and what
dns it have
you can get that in windows in a console by ipconfig /all
and manualy set my ip within the same subnet as the computer
which is gateway

you'd better check your router's DHCP settings as your provider might wish to change his DNS server addresses in the future and your device will keep using old, static ones

this thread title describes my problem, but have to admit that I'm not certain the fix described above would apply to me (or perhaps I just didn't understand the answer??)
My setup:
HTC Advantage x7501 (freshly done a "hard reset") running WM6.
I DO NOT have a SIM card installed, nor do I plan (at this time) to use on a 3G network, just wish to use as a mini-computer on wifi. i've set the "wireless lan" Power Save Mode to "best performance" and am sitting close to wifi. Other windows and mac laptops have successfully used this router for years.

The HTC has been connected several times to the router with the 40/64 - bit encryption. The little arrows move during connection, then stop and status is reported as "connected". The Wireless Lan "Advanced" tab shows "connected to network", reports the MAC, and the right IP address, and allows me to 'renew' it (and it always renews to the same #).
I do notice under the "configure network adapters" part of the wi-fi control settings that there are no "name servers" filled in, but the router is doing DHCP so maybe this is not a problem??? (checking my mac powerbook, I don't fill them in there either)
If I check (from another computer) the router I can see the HTC advantage shows up in the DHCP list of active clients.
Now: when I go to surf the internet, I get NOTHING with either IE or Opera 8.65.
when I put an address in the browser bar (or click a link on the Opera homepage) I see a status bar report at the bottom of the screen that says: "Images 0/0KB Looking up host..." after sometime this process times out. sometimes then I get a message to the effect of "unable to locate host" or just a time out.
Any suggestions?

May I suggest to enter manually the DNS and alternate DNS. I had the same problem and done that and worked.

I have a HTC Wizard (Cingular version). Last week, I discovered this forum and upgraded my phone from WM5 to WM6.1.... and the exact same thing happened to me! Before the upgrade (on WM5), my phone was surfing the internet thru Wifi just fine... and 30 minutes later, after the upgrade -- it didn't work.
Like you, I searched thru these forums and found various "tricks"... none of them worked for me either.
Luckily, I didn't give up on my phone. A couple days later I got the idea "let's see if I can connect to other networks". I stood out on the back porch and my phone found 3 or 4 other Wifi networks..... I tried to connect to each, with no luck. I came back into the house, and on a whim tried my own home network again --- IT WORKED! Since then, I have been able to connect to various-and-sundry Wifi networks just fine. The problem "just went away" (which some others on the forum have reported... "just keep trying", they say).
I have no conclusive evidence, but my theory is that there are some default (or residual) registry settings for Wifi that need to get "pushed out" or overwritten. By attaching to several different networks, the new/default settings in the registry gets overwritten, and once all the "bad" data is gone -- your phone will be fine.

I went to my router config page and got the DNS, then I checked the DNS from a laptop (that is successfully connecting) and both report the same:
domain net
nameserver 71.252.0.12
nameserver 71.250.0.12
Note that neither show / report a "WINS".
entering these into the SETTINGS>CONNNECTIONS>WIFI>NETWORK ADAPTERS>NAME SERVERS helped...and I did a soft reset after entering them, and the entry did hold in the setting after the soft reset.
if anyone has any ideas I'd be thrilled. Happy to do a hard reset again and start from scratch if need be. TY.

I've read online that for the Computer dialog box i input my computers IP address... now, is that the IPV4 address that i get from the CMD box after typing IPCONFIG... or is it the address that i get when i browse over to the website www.whatismyipaddress.com ??
what do i put for my user name and password? is it my PC's password and user name? also... my ISP (internet service provider) is Verizon. i currently have their built in wireless modem up and running. i've seen the tutorial on youtube of how to set up remote desktop by going in to my router and port forwarding numbers... but thats also something i am having trouble with.... ive been cracking my head at this for over 3 hours. can someone please help

For username and password, don't bother with them. You MUST have user logins setup on your PC for this to work. When you eventually do connect to your PC, you'll be presented with the login screen, so you can enter authentication information there instead. Yes, it's your login and password for your PC, but you don't need to worry about that to actually connect.
Without seeing your specific router setup, it's difficult to help with the next part. Go to start, run and type cmd. Type IPCONFIG - this will give you the IP address that your computer has. You need to allow all traffic on port 3389 to go to that IP address. There will be something about port forwarding in your router setup (which I have to assume you know how to access).
If you have trouble, google for the model number of your router and "port forwarding" and you're bound to find a how-to page.
Incidentally, that IP address is your "internal" IP address - the one that your router assigns to your PC so you can communicate with it. When you go to whatismyipaddress it tells you the IP address of your router. You need to connect to that from outside, and the port forwarding says "someone's connecting to me on port 3389 via my external IP address. I've got port forwarding set up to allow traffic on that port to go to an internal IP address." (You may not hear it say that )

Looks fine. So did you try logging in?
These instructions won't work if you have more than one device in your house using that router and each device will get its own IP from the router, so when a request comes in from the outside network, it won't know which IP to send the request to.
**UNLESS** you're doing it over WIFI from your phone, which would already put you on the inside network so you don't need to worry about that.
Tell us, are you trying to connect using 3G, or are you trying to connect using your in-house WiFi using the router?

Good point - I didn't pick up on the fact that the port forwarding is not asking for an end IP address.
As zdrux says, if you're connecting your HD2 to your wireless network then you can connect to your PC directly, using the internal IP address, as mentioned in the post above.
Nope not working... im getting really irritated. i dont understand why it isnt working. do i need to be connected through my own wifi? or should i disable it?
You don't need to connect via your own wifi, as long as your router is doing it's job properly. It's easier to connect via wifi though, as you can rule out the router completely and at least get it working.
A few questions...
Do you have to log onto windows with a username and password?
Do you have windows firewall on?
What version of Windows 7 is it?

Nobody will help if you can't answer our questions.
- Are you connecting through 3G, or through you WiFi at home? Where do you get your connection on your phone?! This is important.
- Turn off windows fire-wall completely until you solve this so you know its not getting in the way.
- Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System ..and click on "Remote Settings" in the left pane, once a new window opens up, make sure you check the box where it says "Allow assistance from other computers" and also a little lower where it says "Allow other versions of windows to connect to this computer".
- Go to your router and look for an option where you can set a computer as the DMZ, put in the IP of your computer in that box if you have one of those boxes as an option. This is the IP you see when you type "ipconfig" on your computer.
- Go to www.canyouseeme.org to test if your Remote Desktop port is open. Once you get to that webpage, type in port number 3389 and click "Check", this will confirm if it's an issue with your computer or your phone.
- Like the other person said, if this doesn't work, try connecting your computer without a router. Just get the cable running from the modem straight into your network card, unless you have one of those router/modem all-in-one things.
If you are connecting over the home wifi, then you shouldn't need to go near port forwarding, or indeed your router at all.
the target ip is the PC address you get from cmd - ipconfig (192.168.....) and as johnc said, you can leave user and pass blank and log in directly.
If you are wanting to connect over your phones data, then the target ip is found either by visiting whatismyip or in the router, look for the wan ip address. (Example 82.27.19.187)
and in that case you set up in your router a port forward from external port 3389 to internal address (your pc address from ipconfig) on port 3389.

Not to hijack the thread but, I am having problems using remote desktop also. Maybe you can help.
Host Computer: Notebook
OS: Win xp pro
Connectivity: T-Mobile USA PCM/CIA card gprs/edge/3G
User name has Admin Privileges
In Security Center, Firewall. I made exceptions for Remote Desktop and Remote Assistance.
When I goto www.canyouseeme.org on the notebook on the t-mobile wireless card, Error: I could not see your service on on port 3389 Reason: Connection refused
Client: HD2
Connectivity: T-Mobile USA 3G
On the HD2 I put:
Computer: IP address of the host computer
User name: Name of Admin Privileged User
Password: Password that corresponds to the user name
When I goto www.canyouseeme.org on the HD2, Error: I could not see your service on on port 3389 Reason: Connection refused
1) On the host computer, Must all users be logged off and the computer at the login screen or can I be logged in on an Admin User?
2) If users must be logged off, I can go to Task Manager and disconnect user that will be used to login with remote desktop?
3) T-Mobile USA Blocking ports 3389?
If I log out of the user, I go to the login screen but the wireles connection is terminated.
My Goal:
I have a notebook in my work vehicle on the T-mobile air card (Wireless ) and while I am in a building working, I would like to connect to the notebook in the vehicle with my HD2 instead of walking back and forth or having to carry my notebook with me.
If you need more information, I will do my best to give exact details.

You left out a step on the PC.
On the Remote screen setup on the PC you have to add the Login IDs that will be allowed to login remotely.

I called T-mobile usa, spoke with their PDA/Smartphone Tech Support, They could not give me an answer that A) They are blocking ports 3389 or B) They are not blocking ports 3389.
The tech continued to asked me over and over again " did that application come on the phone or you installed it" I told him repeatedly " Remote desktop come loaded on the factory T-mobile ROM"
He then said, they are working with their network dept and directly with HTC

You have to connect first before you can even think of logging in. We still didn't get to that part.

This is irrelevant, the website checks to see if the port on your PC is open, this has nothing to do with the phone (yet). If your port 3389 is open and accepting connections, the website should say so, nothing to do with the phone at this time.
This basically means your computer has port 3389 shut off/blocking, figure out what's doing that and then you can connect.

windows firewall is on
