Vista SP1, on your shift or not? - Shift General

Hi everyone, just notice the news is saying Vista SP1 starting appearing on windows update, just wonder if any of you sees that on your Shift? i click check for update many many times already and it just not there.
I know there is a stand alone install file, but i prefer to automatic download through windows update.
So what is going on, is SP1 on for Shift or not?

It's coming on Windows Update but not everyone can see it.
I already downloaded it 2 weeks ago (MSDN) and I can recommand it
It takes a long time to install, but after that it's nice to have it.

Don't know. I did this check for updates several times, and hoppa, once it asked me if I wanted to install the SP1.
That was 18-3 in the evening east european time. In the afternoon I had no luck.
Works great.
Huib

installed, but not very cleanly
Well, after 3 failures, I finally updated to SP1 using Windows Update.
Took a lot longer than an hour I can tell you. Between 2-4 hours per attempt.
In the end, I still had no audio and problems with Shagctrl. Followed instruction on other threads here and they seem to be ok now.
My remaining problem is that he custom buttons on the right side of the screen are no longer mapped. Shagctrl and resolution changer are accessible by running the applications directly, but the buttons don't do anything.
Any ideas?

I tried the beta and notice some great improvements with my videocard. I origianlly scored a 4.5 without it and with it I received a 4.7. The gaming graphics received a much higher score. I uninstalled the SP1 RC1 though in order to aquire the newer release and still have not seen it yet. I do know that MS states they have already started releasing it to the manufactures as of Feb 2008. Who knows.

Yes that's correct. It showed up in the partner site a couple of weeks ago.
Otherwise, use this link to download it

VISTA SP1
The direct download is hidden until next week and they really want you to do it via Windows Update.
But here's the link (no MSDN required!!)
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...6d-5ebb-413b-89c9-cb3d06d12674&DisplayLang=en
DOH!!! Didn't see the full link and thought it was an error.

Thank you for the link. I will be a lot happier now. In your opinion, I have 2gb of ram. Would it be beneficial to buy another 2 gb to have 4gb? The price is right....

You have 2GB RAM on the Shift and wonder whether you should upgrade to 4GB?
First, I don't really believe in the 2 GB - (theoretically possible but hits you with roughly $500 and voids the warranty) and 4Gb is just not possible, that kind of RAM for the Shift does not exist (maybe in some dev labs of RAM manufacturers, ready for release in 2009 ...)

Umm Sorry, I was comfused and was talking about the memory for my PC not PPC since the topic of Vista SP1 was on the board. I would love my phone to even have 1 gig.

I just UNINSTALLED SP1.
There was no problem with screen drivers.
There was no problem with Shift Control Center. (after I uninstalled and re-installed.)
Actualy I was running smoothly but for one thing:
The USB Tool kept disconecting.
I really want the WM to Vista connection to be stable so I can backup my PIM between Vista and WM so... I uninstalled it and everything works fine now.

In this case, let's go off topic for a moment:
If you already have 2GB in your desktop, another 2 GB to get to 4GB will probably not change that much (for "normal use"). On the other hand, RAM is cheap (except for the f***ing microDIMMs) and if you should do things like video editing ...
Just one advice: Consider adding only 1GB on top as Windows Vista 32 can only access a maximum of 3.5GB. Putting in the full 4GB would be more than Vista can handle (unless you should be running the 64bit version) and while it just ignores the additional half GB, this is wasted money.

Vista running on 64mb of RAM? Surely some mistake.... That would be painful to use.
Its a dual boot device... for WM6 it uses 64mb of ram.... but for vista its 1 GB.... only thing i cant figure out is how to run WM6 if the Intel A110 (dothan) is not a Arm processor.... Emulate WM6???

I've heard that mentioned before, but there is no mention of it in the description on the Expansys website.
Key Features
- 7-inch widescreen display
- 30-gigabyte hard drive
- QWERTY keyboard
- Microsoft Vista Business OS
- Windows Media Player 11

etc...
Let's watch this space...
If this thing doesn't come with Athena specs on the PPC side of things it'll be a waste of time for die hard PPC users!
It should have at least 128 if not 256MB RAM, and as for the CPU..we'll just have to wait and see...HTC haven't released anything of late or ever that wasn't fit for purpose.

it can be true?
as long asThis UMPC-like device will run Windows Vista Business and come with Microsoft Office.
It will have 64 MB of RAM plus 1 GB DDR2 microDIMM, 128 MB of ROM, and a 30 GB hard drive.
specs found dont know if totally factual
If the vista bit can access the internet and is reasonably quick cpu wise its gonna be hard to ignore

I'm hoping the final specs are impressive. I have my credit card ready for this one. Since I have two pockets I figured Athena in one and Shift in the other. LOL
I can't wait for the final specs. I really hope it comes with built in GPS, etc.
I knew about the Shift before i got my Athena.
Its funny but I thought at the time I bet i end up getting that phone/mini laptop thingy.
If this can do what the Athena can and is more powerful to boot, i cant see my self NOT getting it!
If it can play Proevo 6 Online over HSPDA that would be perfection !!!

well i saw the specs on a video on youtube when the were showing a demo of it.... seems that it is using a intel processor as shift was announced on IDF.... using A110 ( dothan @ 800Mhz ) and intel 945GMC....
i doubt the specs for the pda side will match Athena as it only uses 64mb of ram and i think it should be an emulated WM6 as A110 is built on the X86 architechture..... Ha vista for a phone...... i wouldnt want
that.... For all you knoe it hangs the very moment someone calls..... =D....

as you can see its 7" i dont think anyone will remotely think of using that as a phone
well it does come with the feature... doesnt it??? anyway 800mhz for vista.... wouldnt that make performance very slow...?
probably... but if u run it slim im sure it would be fine ...
besides im pretty sure u can use a dif os on it like linux
i thought it was supposed to be a 1.2 processor
as for not using as a phone the Athena is pretty much unusable as one as well unless u use bluetooth headset which u would have to do with the shift
Shift and Shangri-la are NOT one and the same phone.
Shift only runs vista. Shangri-la runs both Vista and WM6. They also look different visually.

The Unlockr.com rooting guide infected my computer. (Warning!)

ok, i know this sounds absurd. But hear me out.
When going through the unlocking guide for the HTC legend on unlockr.com.
The guide offers a download for the version of HTC Sync required during the downgrading procedure. The provided website even includes the download link for the file.
So, I install it and go about my attempts at rooting. (I ultimately fail and still have yet to figure it out, but that's not the issue here.)
After trying it and failing, i try another computer. (XP) as mine is Win7.
A few hours later, My fathers World of Warcraft account gets stolen. Curious.
After going through all the steps to lock, restore, and re-active the account. The password to it and his e-mail have been changed.
Next night. same thing happens. I try to scan the computer for malware, nothing shows up. So, I'm looking through the processes, and i come across 'logger.exe' and 'generic.exe'
After doing some research and tests, guess what? It was installed with that supplied version of HTC Sync. It was stealing WoW accounts and clearing them out.
It couldn't do it on my Win 7 machine because i didn't have wow installed, or due to Win7 security measures, I don't know. But it only worked on the XP machine. However, it was also present on the win7 machine.
The loggers are located in
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Teleca Shared\Generic.exe and
C:\Program Files\Common Files\Teleca Shared\logger.exe
Both of these processes are malware and were installed on my computers from that Unlockr HTC Sync installation file.
I just wanted to inform everybody here if they've used that version of HTC sync from unlockr that they may want to check their computers for this keylogger.
I've googled it, and i'm not the only one.
I've sent an e-mail about this to unlockr last week and they have yet to get back to me, or remove the file.
are you sure about that?
i have a stock legend and htc sync downloaded directly from the htc website... i just checked and coincidentally it is also the version 2.0.33 and also have the 2 suspicious logger and generic in my tasks... are you saying that these 2 processes are malwares from the official htc source?
i'm gonna google it and i hope you're wrong ...
I did a search and found the following links... which seems to say they are legit processes from htc sync software... its just a bad choice of name i agree...
http://systemexplorer.net/filereviews.php?fid=6587
http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/211133;jsessionid=B08E85EE9B11C593AD3FD93DD4B0036F.app3jive1
Well, this could very well be true. But personally, too many things don't add up.
This process (for me) only activated when i booted WoW. Otherwise it wasn't running.
After doing some online research, i found three other people who's linked this process to stolen wow accounts.
My fathers wow account was repeatedly broken in to until i removed this process.
As for it being in the legit HTC Sync. I agree, and i'm not disputing that. But that doesn't mean that the version supplied by unlockr from a file download site (not directly from HTC) may be infected and pretending to be the legit processes.
Too many coincidences for me to believe that this is 100% a coincidence.
Coincidence that it only actives when wow starts.
Coincidence that the wow account stopped being stolen only right after that process was removed.
Coincidence that multiple other people have had the exact same problem. (Though the place they acquired htc sync is not known).
I fully admit i don't have all the proof and could very well be wrong and making myself look like an idiot. But, I don't think i am. Too much of this doesn't add up to it being completely safe and some other thing is the cause for us who's been effected.
Again, just thought i'd put that out there.
I might have to look into this, however you said the logger only starts up when using WoW... there has to be a process running that activates logger.exe when starting WoW.
Submit the files to Symantec/Trend and see if they find it suspicious.
Have you used Process Explorer to track down where the file actually resides?
Right click the process and choose properties, you can see where on the hard drive the file exists.
Or.. simply stop playing WoW..

My XP laptop and my i7 beast running Win7 Pro do just fine with MSSE, I got fed up of Linux dependency problems, went to FreeBSD and never looked back and now only use Windowz on all my machines 'cos that's where most of the money is in the business world

That doesn't mean your requirements resemble his in any way, does it?
You like Linux. We get it.
That's not the point... the point is I don't like bloatware and stuff running on my comp just because. If you are running stuff just because, you need better comp to be able to do your job besides that. Coz you need an anti-virus you need bigger comp and bigger stronger comp draws more power so you are at loss 2x in a row for nothing and you are getting grey hair 2x faster again all for nothing... installing drivers, removing drivers, reinstalling them again... repeating it 10x and you are still at point zero meaning you haven't yet began to do your job, which comp was primarily ment for.
Ahh, sorry for the OT rant but just think about what is your comp doing most of its lifetime...
Sent from my HTC Legend
I haven't removed and reinstalled drivers in months, and MSSE takes an extremely small amount of CPU time to do its thing. The power draw between the two is absolutely minimal, if at all measurable. Sure, Norton and McAfee retail AV sucks donkey balls, but there are very capable and lightweight alternatives to those hilarious sacks of crap, pardon my french.
Windows has moved on since the '98 days, and you only have bloatware if you buy a PC from a manufacturer and don't uninstall it. You should try Windows 7 some time; when properly set up it's extremely good. Much better than the atrocity that was Fis... er... Vista.
You know and understand Linux. I know and understand Windows, because it's my job and because the vast majority of the business desktop world runs on Windows, if not OS X. You no doubt have preconceived notions about how bad Windows is, I have preconceived notions about Linux. That doesn't mean each OS doesn't have its own place, and it doesn't necessarily follow that they are intrinsically bad or useless.
I've checked those two files that the author mentioned with Malware Bytes and NOD32 - harmless.
Still a bad choice naming *.exe files this way.
I'm going to get round to installing a VM in my spare time and test the theory that those files are bad, just because MBAM and NOD32 don't pick them up as being bad, doesn't mean they aren't.
OT:
Calm down I used Linux and Windows in the late 90's through to about 2003, some friends using FreeBSD converted me and it's much better in terms of stability and package management (ports tree rocks!), and no dependency issues at all. I use Linux occasionally and it's come along way, but Windows has come even further imo, since Win9x - Vista was a stepping stone and you need a bad apple even now and then huh?
I have to use Windows because it's what my job requires, I tried Ubuntu and open source office alternatives but nothing touched MS Office, imo. There is no bloatware on my PC because I installed Win7 from scratch after arriving from Dell, it found all my drivers and installed them for me and they all work without any problems. I didn't have to pay for it because the company I work for does, same as Office. The majority of office worker use MS products for a reason, they're good and if they weren't people would be changing to alternatives far quicker than what they are.
PS: I regularly have 2 x XP, 2-3x Win7, 2-3 Linux/BSD and 2-3 Windows 2003/2008 VM's running all at once. Practising migrations needs a lot of machines running and it's cheaper doing it on a beast than have 10 stand alone machines.

[Q] install Windows 7 on TF101

Before all the hardcore Android fans start swearing at me for asking this question.... there is a reason for asking it.
As the title explains...... has anyone been able to install Windows 7 on the TF101 (aka Transformer) ?
I've read a couple of articles online that the tablet was suppose to come with Windows 7 on it, which would mean that somewhere, someone at Asus has already done it.
Any of the developers on here know how to install Windows 7 on the TF101 ?
Article links below :
http://www.technologyrekor.eu/asus-eee-pad-tf101-windows-7-tab-gets-fcc-nod.html

http://topsgadget.info/asus-eee-pad-tf101-comes-to-fcc-tablet-with-windows-7/990
Well, I am a Windows guy and I would love to have it running in the Decepticon but as far as I know there is no Tegra version of Windows 7.
You will have to wait for Windows 8.
It would be cool to have VMWare for Android.
I read here somewhere that there might be a problem with drivers. I would like to see that too!
Sent from my TF101
Yeah its an issue with the CPU type, its the same reason you couldn't virtualize or install windows on Macs before they changed to an x86 architecture. Windows 8 is the first one designed to run both on x86 and ARM processors, its much deeper than drivers though, even the applications will have to behave differently.
check out the links..... someone obviously has a TF101 with windows 7 on it.
Just a matter of finding out how it was done.
Since the TF101 uses a Tegra 2 processor (not an Intel CULV as some early press reports stated), and Windows 7 does not support the Tegra 2 architecture, unfortunately installing Windows 7 on it is not possible.
Windows 8 will have ARM support, so there'll be a chance that works...

forgive me for being dumb...... but check the date release on those articles. They are only 2 weeks old. I dont think it would be humanly possible to swap out the chipset, redesign the boards architecture and have it fully released in stores in just 1 week. These guys must have gotten their info from somewhere.

Its not a matter of switching the chip set and redesigning it. Those articles are just plain wrong and off base. It seems like they were just speculating based on other similar tablets being released at the time. The TF101 has an the Tegra 2 which is clearly a fact. All these articles mention completely different hardware. One of them even mentions a core i5.
It is not possible with the hardware that is in the tablet to run any current version of Windows. I promise there is not a TF101 somewhere running Windows 7, even internally at ASUS.

Someone, somewhere, made a mistake and others ran with the story.
Apparently reading comprehension is low here or many of you didn't actually read the article attached and just assumed by looking at the pictures.
1. Pictures are not of the TF101, look at the placement of the mini HDMI vs the headphone jack. This is obviously a different model
2. CPU is claimed to be an Intel CULV model not a nVidia SOC of any kind.
3. As previously stated there is no current Windows desktop version that will run on any type of ARM device, so the current TF won't/can't run windows.
4. Just because the headline is dated two months ago doesn't mean there is a working version, there seems to be just enough to send to the FCC for certification.
5. Most likely a pre-production tablet used for testing and/or development, so yes they can swap internal parts and test to their hearts content.
Just because we may wish it to be true doesn't make it so.
If you really want an Asus tablet running Windows they already have the ASUS Eee Pad (Eee Slate) EP121-1A011M Intel Core i5.

Why is this thread even here?
Maybe it's cocky of me to even ask, but I find it hard to believe that people in the dev section don't understand that Windows is currently x86 and not ARM. It's been that way forever. You'll never get Windows on an Android tablet until x86 versions of Android become commonplace.
Speculation is that Windows 8 will support ARM but I'm extremely skeptical. It makes no sense. ARM versions of windows wouldn't be able to run x86 executables unless there's some sort of emulation layer, and the performance would be horrible. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft shelves that feature before Windows 8 is released.
I'm hopeful we'll see native Ubuntu on ARM, but even then, who cares. I mean, we're expecting all this from a $399 tablet here. We splurged on this expensive toy; if we can spend that on a toy, we can buy a cheap laptop/netbook and throw or OS(es) of choice on it.
</rant>
It's definitely NOT possible as others have already stated in this thread. Windows does not currently run on the ARM CPU architecture at all. People have gotten older versions of windows working, only Windows 3.1 and early afaik but they did so through a DOS emulator that you launch from within Android and the performance is supposed to be ****ty.
When Windows 8 comes out, that is said to have an ARM compatible version that we might be able to install, but that's not going to be for a while.
Someone lock and move this thread to trash...

Windows 8.1 New Version or Big Update?

Hi,
is there something know if Windows Blue will be a new Version you need to buy, or if Microsoft brings Christmas forward and all Win 8 users get the new Update??
For PC it doesn't matter for me, i'll get the new 8.1 but for Surface??
Also it would be nice to know if a complete reinstalle is necessary.
Would be great if someone has some Information about this

Almost surely it won't require a complete reinstall. The are going to bring back the Start Menu in a limited form. It will just be a link to the desktop and not include the full Start Menu. This follows a planned move: a boot to desktop option. Microsoft will add an option to allow users to boot directly to the traditional desktop.

Per MS' new "devices & services" direction, it would've been a paid update in normal circumstances--as also denoted by the "8.1" designation, since only "service packs" were free updates under the old regime. But I agree with others that it'll be a free update, as circumstances are definitely not normal. Win8's foothold is tenuous at best, and the antipathy it has engendered would be nothing compared to the sh!tstorm that would occur if MS decides to charge for this one. I doubt even MS is that oblivious.
As for the "menu or button" thing, it's not cast in stone. We'll see what happens. It may seem a little amusing that such a trivial change is even debated over, but that is how delicately Metro's fate hangs in the balance.
I like the turmoil. Turbulence is good, as it rouses the monopolist and forces it to compete on other than sheer inertia (which there still is plenty of). That usually means a better widget or a better price, and either way the consumer wins.
It's safe to guess that Wintel toys will be cheaper come this holiday season. That would not happen if Win8 was a breakout hit. Thank Apple for its trailblazing, Android for its lowballing, and MS for its usual ineptness. Tomorrow is another fun day.

Hi,
is there something know if Windows Blue will be a new Version you need to buy, or if Microsoft brings Christmas forward and all Win 8 users get the new Update??
For PC it doesn't matter for me, i'll get the new 8.1 but for Surface??
Also it would be nice to know if a complete reinstalle is necessary.

No It's A Big Update.
You can update your windows 8 pro or RT to win 8.1 pro preview by downloading 9 MB from win store then while installing the 9MB pack it will download immediately 1GB or more...
If you are running other vertion of windows (other than pro or RT) you have to download the hole windows 2.5 GB (32bit) / 3.5 GB (64bit)
Hope I helped you

Not just Pro. Also RT.. But if you upgrade to 8.1 on your RT device you will lose your legacy apps meaning you would have to wait for another jailbreak for it.
Thanx

The update is greater than 9mb, the 9mb file from the store is just the installer, the installer then downloads something like a gb or so on top of that.

Htc Shift With Win 8 2GB ram and 128GB SSD!

Hi all, this is my 1st post.
I've just upgraded my HTC shift with Kingspec 128GB sad and 2GB ram. Now the shift feels super fast!
My version is the italian one and liberate with Romeo OS and running win 7 before the upgrade. i got the sad along with an oem version (built 9200) of windows 8.
install was by using the usb tool to boot and install the OS. i was intending to use the acorns true image however, the image was screwed and hence i decided to install the windows 8.
it's not a path for novices but people with a bit of tinkering knowledge will be able to to do it.
Wifi works and SD card works.
Worth of a mention is one seller on Ebay whom sold me the Keyboard. It came with a few broken keys and they offered to send me another at no extra cost!
I got the memory from here ebay.com/itm/251325732211
SSD from here ebay.com/itm/121184667524?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1497.l2649
The sad sure took his time to come. almost 1 month!
For those who are willing to take the gamble to upgrade, Go ahead. It's worth it.
Battery life improved significantly. Now running close to 2 hours with simple email reading and bait of youtube here and there.
Looking to get another battery and leather case.
a pictures say a thousand words.

Did the speed increase alot(with the SSD)? I am wondering that cause we're limited to the slow 800mhz processor =/
