Vista running on 64mb of RAM? Surely some mistake.... That would be painful to use.
Its a dual boot device... for WM6 it uses 64mb of ram.... but for vista its 1 GB.... only thing i cant figure out is how to run WM6 if the Intel A110 (dothan) is not a Arm processor.... Emulate WM6???

I've heard that mentioned before, but there is no mention of it in the description on the Expansys website.
Key Features
- 7-inch widescreen display
- 30-gigabyte hard drive
- QWERTY keyboard
- Microsoft Vista Business OS
- Windows Media Player 11
- Tri-Band UMTS/HSDPA
- WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0
etc...
Let's watch this space...
If this thing doesn't come with Athena specs on the PPC side of things it'll be a waste of time for die hard PPC users!
It should have at least 128 if not 256MB RAM, and as for the CPU..we'll just have to wait and see...HTC haven't released anything of late or ever that wasn't fit for purpose.

it can be true?
as long asThis UMPC-like device will run Windows Vista Business and come with Microsoft Office.
It will have 64 MB of RAM plus 1 GB DDR2 microDIMM, 128 MB of ROM, and a 30 GB hard drive.
specs found dont know if totally factual
If the vista bit can access the internet and is reasonably quick cpu wise its gonna be hard to ignore

I'm hoping the final specs are impressive. I have my credit card ready for this one. Since I have two pockets I figured Athena in one and Shift in the other. LOL
I can't wait for the final specs. I really hope it comes with built in GPS, etc.
I knew about the Shift before i got my Athena.
Its funny but I thought at the time I bet i end up getting that phone/mini laptop thingy.
If this can do what the Athena can and is more powerful to boot, i cant see my self NOT getting it!
If it can play Proevo 6 Online over HSPDA that would be perfection !!!

head of america HTC talking about the shift
well i saw the specs on a video on youtube when the were showing a demo of it.... seems that it is using a intel processor as shift was announced on IDF.... using A110 ( dothan @ 800Mhz ) and intel 945GMC....
i doubt the specs for the pda side will match Athena as it only uses 64mb of ram and i think it should be an emulated WM6 as A110 is built on the X86 architechture..... Ha vista for a phone...... i wouldnt want
that.... For all you knoe it hangs the very moment someone calls..... =D....

its not a phone its designed to be ultraportable laptop...
as you can see its 7" i dont think anyone will remotely think of using that as a phone
well it does come with the feature... doesnt it??? anyway 800mhz for vista.... wouldnt that make performance very slow...?
probably... but if u run it slim im sure it would be fine ...
besides im pretty sure u can use a dif os on it like linux
i thought it was supposed to be a 1.2 processor
as for not using as a phone the Athena is pretty much unusable as one as well unless u use bluetooth headset which u would have to do with the shift
Shift and Shangri-la are NOT one and the same phone.
Shift only runs vista. Shangri-la runs both Vista and WM6. They also look different visually.

What type of processor is it exactly? Doeas anyone know if Xscale based applications are compatible with the hermes or standard ARM? Any help would be appreciated.
I'm pretty sure it will be compatible with ARM not sure about xscale though

Thanks Rob.
It's an old (obselete) ARMv4 platform .... Intel have been using v5 since 2003 .... bit of a disappointment, particularly as it means iplay won't operate as it utilises ARMv5 specifics.
Paul.
Hermes is an ARM4 CPU.

Damn. I mean thanks all the same. Just when it seems HTC decide to give us something better, they give us something a little better but also not cutting edge.
Anyway thanks for the info pgamble but the Hermes performs just dandy considering the point just made.
This is really a moot point, as even Intel got out of the mobile device processor game (sold the XScale division earlier this summer).
Think of it this way: the Samsung is a Samsung... Chances are if you're using old software that is processor dependent, you probably should be looking for a new alternative...

They've been out for a while now, other names are T-Mobile Ameo/HTC Athena/HTC Advantage/Dopod U1000. They're selling like hotcakes on ebay and I couldn't resist, so I ordered 3
It's a LOT better than an Athena ST
I am hooked...

Nope its different to the Athena, its 19cm long, so a bit big for even the biggest pocket.
the shift looks awesome!
i want to see some spec though. i wonder how you hold it to your face
when you';re ,making a call.. since it's the size of two stacked dvd cases.
imagine it was smaller than the universal.. with all the same features.
i'd crap in every pair of pants i had.

The Athena is the replacement for the Universal, i.e. it uses Windows Mobile.
This one uses Windows Vista!!!
What a dream-machine...
Would be interesting to know:
a) price
b) how long the battery lasts
Cheers,
vma
Yet again, I didn't read the thread properly... apologies! Man that's a bit of hardware!!!
Hi Guys
Been reading various threads on your wonderful site now for a few months, finaly got around to registering. Just wanted to say "wow" with regard to the HTC "Shift". I know what I want for Chistmas.
In the meantime, got myself an Ameo last week - so far so good, although only managing to get about 24hrs battery life on light usage! Stil, the HSDPA rocks, providing you can slap t-mob into giving it to you for free as their t+c's stink!
Cheers
IMO, it will be running 2 OSes, namely, WM and Vista(yep, a dual boot device). Its specs says that it has 64MB RAM(probably for WM)+1GB RAM(for Vista).
Also, it has 128MB ROM(again, probably for WM)+30GB(for vista)

dual boot wouldn't be practical.
i'm sure the wmobile aspect is integrated. hopefully you can use a mouse with it, if it's as powerful as a computer at that size this thing's amazing.
and... PUNJABI!!!!

Well, thats what the specs says ATM. AFA using mouse with it is concerned, you can use a BT mouse with any PPC with BT radio.
And, 'PUNJABI' for what dude?
with a name like kamaldeep singh
i figured you were punjabi.
i am too. PUNJABI! say it loud say it proud!
What is the actual RAM in the device?
The X1 has 384 MB RAM but you'll note that the device information screen says 256MB. This is because the X1 also has an additional 128MB RAM that's only accessible to the CPU/3D chip. There isn't really anyway way to know this apart from taking SE's work although HTC also confirm this but we're looking for a way for end users to verify for themselves

already discussed, this thread is duplicated
and if you read the full answer, you will find:
"There isn't really anyway way to know this apart from taking SE's work although HTC also confirm this but we're looking for a way for end users to verify for themselves."
So, performance seems confirm the presence of 128mb of vram, but for now we cannot be sure of that

uh, how so?
seeing is believing
got to be sceptical,
if it's not stated anywhere than it's not there.....
if one believe it that it has 384 RAM,
might as well assume that the x1 also had swiss knife build in, 2Ghz dual core processor, nuclear powered, what ever one can imagine.....
well, now i see how experia is the ultimate machine,
as it is really up to your imagination.

Are you willing to repeat that in front of [insert famous/important/very important persons name]?
Anyway, fu** this, my notebook has 128mb vram and I play fu****g Tom Clancy first person shooters! WTF is wrong with those fu****s putting 128mb vram in a fu****g cellphone! Geeeez I'm so fu****g male but I think I seriously gonna get my period very soon over that device and what gets speculated about it...!
(is writing fu** ok btw?)
does the gpu of hd2 is powerful enough to handle directx 9 announced as requirement for wp7
I was wondering the same thing the other day and couldn't find any official spec sheets. I asked over in one of the threads in the WP7s forums and I got the idea that OpenGL ES 2.0 was supported, which was 'basically the same.'
does any one know any useful info
http://brew.qualcomm.com/brew_bnry/pdf/brew_2007/Tech-303_Ligon.pdf
See page 15 for the best tech specs I've seen on the snapdragon / z430 / ATI LT. Still very light on details but claims direct3d sm3 support.
For that specific chipset (MSM7850) they claim DX9 support on page 31.
Their old chip (7500) supports DX7.
Since that was 2007, we can presume they've maintained similar compatibility in their newer (8250) chipset, yes?
Missed that bit, now all we need is a driver </sarcasm> for the humour impaired.
[sarcasm]obviously MS is aiming really high this time..
DX9 compatible portable devices, that use huge amounts of power so they can do what?
render a load of bloody text!
whoopppeee !
[/sarcasm]
so tje final answer is that hd2 gpu is enough for directx 9 or what?
The only correct answer to anything around here is, that noone knows nothing at all!
We can't run DX9 on WMPS7 so what ever?!
Before everyone freaks out, about fckn WMPS7, why not wait until you really see something?
Actually all the previews by microsoft were pretty ****ty! The phones worked pretty slow, I dont like that "hub" thing, and they are limited to the ground!
Thats what I would call "YaI" -> Yet another Iphone...
I'm loving WM6 and the only OS I'll be switching to, if WM6 dies (what i dont think, cuz there are more programmers who like WM6) will be android, but not another limited bull**** os

Is there any other operating systems that we can run on the HTC Hero beside Android as would really like to try somthing diffrent on it.

I also tried, but most other OS are either close source or built for another CPU type. Widows phone for example is closed source, while Meego is built for Intel chips
sent with love from me to you
awesome very nice

wouldnt be a very feasible solution now would it?
Every OS has layer over layers of code and to run it you have to go with a better phone, because you need power...and some OS's have closed source code... so no access to what we need to develop...
And sincer the hero is to damn old...phone are evolving to fast...damn why have a quad core phone (i read htc has one in plans) if you have a max of 5 inch display????? I understand power to a tablet BUT TO A PHONE?... Most of the cases are market strategy...
So in this case, to run a OS on a single phone it's getting kind of hard...so a phone for every os is the best option. I would like to run WM on my phone but since no source code...

I may go fr a quad but I'd still use this fone simply Cos it opened my world at xda

quadcore... AMAZING
I would love to have a quad core phone imagin what you could do with it.
It would be great to run a virtual host on it an have 2, lets say androids on it one for business with all the restrictions activated from exchange or anything and one private where you can have your social media apps.
Just have two (or more) phone in one phone.
maybe also different platforms,... who knows.

imagine how big the battery must be to get enough power in the CPU then
also dualcore is almost to much for a phone.. you never really need it
quad core on a phone....NEAH...buy a tablet...i already have one and i'm pleased with it, so i was asking myself these days? why buy a big 4.7 inch phone and spend a lot of money when you can buy a tablet and do more stuff with it since it has a 10 inch screen...
PS: asus transformers is on sale for BF @ 250 $...so it's good to buy if you don't need to play the new tegra games

i would like wm 6.1 to my Hero )))
