For about a year I have looked for a way to read and write NAM data from HTC CDMA phones.
Today I finished my search and have put together a kit for doing the above stuff, at least for the Apache/6700. It includes all the drivers and a very nice program to hack around with your phone (CDMA Workshop).
You guys have helped me out SO much in the past, so I'd like to give something back.
So without further ado, here are the instructions.
1. Remove all drivers from previous attempts to get it working (if any) then download the attachment and uncompress to an empty folder.
2. In ActiveSync, go File -> Connection Settings and uncheck the box labelled "Allow USB connections".
3. On your phone, go Start -> Programs -> File Explorer and browse to the Windows folder.
4. Scroll down until you find a program called DMrouter. Open it and click start.
5. Plug your Apache into cradle/cable.
6. The add new hardware wizard will come up. Do not allow it to connect to windows update. Click next and select "Install the drivers from a specific location" and browse to the drivers folder inside wherever you put the ESNkit.
7. If all goes well, another add new hardware wizard will come up. Repeat the exact same process as step 6.
8. On your computer, go Start -> Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager -> View -> Devices by Connection. Then play around until you see under a USB Root hub a USB composite device with two devices in its sub-tree. One of them will have a COM port number e.g. COM6. Write this down.
9. Go into the ESNkit folder and run cdma_wshop_loader. The password is ogmisthebest
10. CDMA workshop should load. Select port you wrote down e.g. COM6, click Connect, click Read, and you're in!
How to read SPC (Greetz to rafaelc, this is for you )
After step 10, go to the Security tab, and under the SPC section, select Universal, EFS Method in the listbox.
Click read.
Click OK in the dialog.
There will be a dialog pop up with a whole lot of dots and numbers. The first 6 Numbers after the dots end are your SPC.
If you want to change NAM data with this SPC, type it into the box and click SPC then click Send and go to the NAM tab, click read, and hack away!
How to change ESN (Proof of concept , changing to an actual ESN is illegal pretty much everywhere)
After step 10, go to the Security tab, and under the ESN section, select Universal, EFS Method in the listbox.
MAKE SURE YOU WRITE DOWN YOUR CURRENT ESN JUST IN CASE.
Click Read.
It will show your ESN!
To change, type in your new ESN and click write.
Done!
Have fun guys!!

Avast found it too!
There is no backdoor trojan, I suspect Avast may be picking up the loader for the program as a trojan. Avast is a hypochondriac program that sucks anyway
My NOD32 doesn't pick up anything.

Wowee...
I think it may be detecting the loader as a virus because of the way it fiddles with the RAM. Just a guess though. Note the _probably_ a variant. It does honestly work fine.
What just happened!!!
I did everything that you said, and it restarted my computer when i opened the program!

Program is probably buggy, does some stuff with memory pointers to make the CDMA workshop think its registered and may have thrown something out of balance. I give you my word that to the best of my knowledge your computer will not be broken in any way.

ALSO, update:
I'm looking for a full version of CDMA workshop that doesn't throw everybody's antivirus programs into paranoid spasms, will post back later with results.
I tried it again and it worked this time, but i still have the drivers from last time, how do i uninstall them? thx
went into antivirus spasm mode.
both copies i tried to download.
did you ever find a solution??
sounds like a handy piece of software i'd like to add.
Great! It looks like i'm gonna try it on my Apache..

Well the file only contains the drivers for the Apache and the ESN change program, but if you can find the Hero drivers, the program in the rar should work fine.

Version 1.6
- Full compliance with USB Mass Storage Bootability Specification. Now booting PC from smartphone as USB stick should always properly work, provided your computer's BIOS is modern enough to properly USB-drive-boot. Checked it via booting FreeDOS and PuppyLinux from my 8310 - seem to work ok.
- Improved general compliance with USB Mass Storage protocol. Still not 100% compliant though, due to the built-in hardware driver limitations & bugs.
- Added command line switches to control utility "remotely", via scripting utils or batch files & shortcuts:
-a Activate mass storage mode
-d Deactivate mass storage mode
-q Quit
Switches can be combined, they will be executed in order. For example, "WM5torage -a -q" will launch utility, activate mass storage mode (if not active already), and quit after activation is completed.
more details see: http://www.modaco.com/WM5torage-t238545.html
Thanks zoki for the info. I use wm5torage alot - great program
For those who don't have a modaco login find attached below.
Thank you, meschle!!!
I really appreciate your help.
Awsome Utility! Thx!
When I run the link that came with this program, it will not let me activate and it says "Status: Can't open card."
My card is working just fine. What is the problem?
BTW, I have a Cingular 8125 running the origonal ROM.
isnt there a wm5 storage that is 1.7 thats what mine says. unless im worng. wait....no im right it says 1.7 here it is.
Latest version of the excellent Wm5torage 1.72 device to usb stick convertor - i have modified installer so that its suitable for PPC installation rather than smartphone.
mods are:
1. No setup.dll so no request to restart device (not required anyhow)
2. Installs shortcut to start menu\program files rather than start menu\accessories (thats a smartphone directory)
3. Installs straight to \program files\wm5torage rather than having a destination dialog.
excellent. does exactly as you say it should.
This program is one of those must haves. The USB-like storage was want enough, but with the boot facility it is godlike. As long as I have my cable with me I can boot to my puppylinux install wherever I am without the need to carry an extra USB key around.
Gotta love getting updates to EXCELLANT apps.
I agree, this is one of those absolutely-why-didn't-microsoft-include-this-awesome apps.
sry this may b a stupid question but what does he mean by full application unlock? does he mean the prog or the ppc?
This is some wicked software, now if I go anywhere who hasn't got activesync I can use my Vario as a USB stick!!!
Thanks Guys.

Gave me some problems this version. Slow down my system like hell. InClose stopped working. Had to soft reset and then I unistalled it. Ver 1.3 worked fine, even with the extra accessory folder. Any information where I could find it? Thanks.

Incompatibilities with some devices(started in 1.6x) should be fixed at this release.

sorry for the uneducated question: what doed this program do?

Hello to all!
I think, I've finally found the reason why Chevron almost never works. After a few days of struggle, I managed to successfully unlock my HD2 three times in a row, all by the same trick.
The idea is to change the IP which Chevron emulates DURING the process of jailbreak. Here's step-by-step.
1 - Disable LAN card in your PC (Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network Connections\ right click on "Local Area Connection" and choose "disable"). It is very important to disable ALL connections, but you MUST remember which one is used for Internet access (see below, why).
2 - Do all the standard steps of unlock - install certificate, start WPConnect e.t.s. When Chevron fails to unlock - LEAVE IT OPEN.
3. Start Notepad and open hosts. Delete lines added by Chevron (at the bottom). Save. LEAVE NOTEPAD OPEN.
4. Press Win+R and enter IPConfig /flushdns , press "enter". CMD window will blink for a second - that's normal.
5. Press Win+R again (there will be IPConfig /flushdns typed already), but DO NOT PRESS "ENTER", just leave this window open.
6. Now the trick. Start WPConnect. WHILE it connects, continue to repeatedly press "Unlock" button in Chevron, until the black CMD window of WPconnect disappears. Chevron will fail to do its job, but that's in fact is the very thing we need.
7. Now, do not touch Chevron window, just return to Network Connections and ENABLE yor LAN card.
8. Go to Notepad and JUST CLICK "Save", do not alter anything inside.
9. Return to the window with the typed command IPConfig /flushdns . Press Enter.
10. Start WPConnect, WAIT until it disappears, and press "Unlock" button in Chevron. You're done - this time unlock would work.
At least, it worked for me 3 times in a row, while NO other ways worked.
Best regards - Draco.
P.S. If you have firewall - disable it before doing anything.
P.P.S. Win7 from NAND + MDJ Desire HD 4.4 from SD = best phone in the world

I have followed other guides posted here before, but none is as reliable as this one. Flawless. (Note that Zune is not required at all during this process, WPConnect is used)
Extra precautions :
1) Make sure port 443 is not used. You can open command prompt and type netstat -aon. From there, check which ip ends with 443 and check its PID number.
Once you have acquired the PID, go to command prompt and type tskill <PID number>.
2) Close skype.
3) Turn off your antivirus / firewall.
4) Make sure that during executing WPconnect.exe you're phone should NOT in be in sleep-mode/locked.
5) Make sure your host file located in C:\Windows\system32\drivers\etc\ is not read-only.

Thanks for the guide.
I am a noob.. so... what is WPConnect? Sorry for the stupid question.

WPconnect is an executable used to connect your PC to wp7 devices without having to open ZUNE.
You can find out more about it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=10609273#post10609273
I test all solution, why not these one? I will reflash WP7 and test
Thanks for the TIP !
Ok.. now I know.. but the major problem is that I have Windows Xp.. so no chance to try tha trick... :-(
As I click on WPConnect.exe it just blinks for 1 second an closes then. What am I doing wrong?!

Can you read what is says in the window before it closes? Usually WPconnect just opens for 2-3 seconds and after a connection is established it will close back. If it says "Connection is established" or something like that, means you're good to go.
Read the steps carefully.
Ahah, i remove WP7 from my device but i test WPConnect, got the same problem... So i made a quickscreenshot, to see the error message, this is it !!
or this one!
yeah, that's just the same as I get when running WPConnect.
Yes but does it solve your problem?
I post 2 screenshot;
-Compltly close Zune
-Connect the device
Here's what i did, connect the phone to PC via USB, let zune opens and sync. Then close zune. Rune WPconnect.exe. It should say "Trying to establish a connection with blablabal" then "Connection established" and it will close. Try that.

You mean you dont have WP7 on your HD2 and you try WPconnect with it? That wont work. Anyways also make sure you're not in sleep mode or lock mode when you use wpconnect.

I got so excited when I found this particular thread. Of all the hacks and mods for Chevron out there this one seemed to be the most realistic solution. I have to XP machines. I managed to install Windows Phone Development Tools on one(everything works except emulator and debuger) I downloaded the WPDTOctober2010Update_en.msp, and insured it installed to C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDK's\Windows Phone\v7.0\Tools\WPConnect.exe.(REBOOTED)
After I set up my HD2(again) Followed all the sugested settings, and downloaded Chevron cert via WIFI email. I began the steps on the 1st post.
1) I disabled all connections
2) I plugged in phone and through file explorer double clicked on WPConnect.exe and I got this error
" C:\Program Files\Microsoft SDK's\Windows Phone\v7.0\Tools\WPConnect.exe is not a valid Win32 application."
I bet if I had WINDOWS 7 this would not be the case. Any help, advise solutions would be appreciated. Thanks.

OK start up your mobile. Is the date and time correct (Very important) if all ok then start zune. open up the chevron on c/drive and see if it will connect with ot the Ohno message.
You may have to do this a few times. try the other computer as well.
Some guy's can get the chevron to work, by puting the date a few months forward NOT back.
If you do manage to get the chevron unlocked, then dont lock it.
Make sure to swith off spyware detectors, and put your antivirus into stand by mode until you complete this tasks.

alright, So on my GSM HTC 8x (T-Mobile), I got File Explorer working in QPST. I can read and write various NVram values, change band prefs, etc. One thing interesting I found in the File Explorer (Not Windows OS, but for the Fileexp for the modem) is there is a directory called "Supl". In it is a file called "SuplRootCert". I copied it to my PC, and renamed it to "SuplRootCert.cer". When I opened the file, it presented itself as the "T-Mobile USA Root CA". Trusted Root Certificate.
I wonder what this is doing here? It can't be for Wi-Fi calling because the firmware doesn't support it (although it did at one time)..I wonder if we can put our own root certificate here and if the phone will trust it?

The name of the certificate reminds me something about A-GPS, but I could be wrong....
But there is something very intriguing in your experiments: perhaps that way we could enable LTE on the international ATIV S.

I have something you ca try with your Ativ S, if you want:
Try installing the diagnosticApp_Sprint onto your Ativ via the Microsoft Store (Set OEMID to HTC and CID to "null") Then see if you can toast your way to app://e69a2877-59b8-43ed-898d-554fbc4b8b2b/_default#/EmbeddedTool;component/DMSwitchPage.xaml Once there, you can try toggling one of the switches (both will enable the necessary serial Port). When the phone auto-reboots, you should be able to connect it to the PC. Once Windows Update finds and installs the drivers (I am assuming it will do this for the ATIV S), launch the "QPST Service Programming tool" (QPST can be found on the forum if you search for it) Once that tool loads, pick out your device and click "connect". Once that loads, click "read from phone". now go to the UMTS System tab to set your band preferences. (My 8x had all of them enabled by default) (I have nothing to compare it to, so YMMV). Once you have made changes, just press "write to phone" and wait for it to reset. Hopefully then you will have LTE enabled!

You can do this with samsung diagnosis, open it and enter *#7284#, then select QC RmNetComposite. After doing whatever you want, you can go back setting it to MTP again.

Obviously, the new version of the diagnosis app (the one included in the official GDR3 update) inhibits that code...I think I will decide myself to restart from GDR2 and upgrade with the "polish" hack, in the end. I was too lazy to do it, Now I have at least a good reason to do it....

How did you do that? I mean... I have a GSM HTC 8x as well and I'd like to edit the registry (mainly to change roaming preferences, bands preferences and if it is possible, the accent colors). Is that possible?
I have installed the Sprint Diagnostics app but it only shows the IMEI info and the SIM card info, nothing more. It does absolutely nothing else. Am I missing something?
You need to install @cpuguy's Native Toast Launcher

How did you do that? I mean... I have a GSM HTC 8x as well and I'd like to edit the registry (mainly to change roaming preferences, bands preferences and if it is possible, the accent colors). Is that possible?
I have installed the Sprint Diagnostics app but it only shows the IMEI info and the SIM card info, nothing more. It does absolutely nothing else. Am I missing something?

this only allows you to edit the phone modem at this time. We might be able to reflash the os partition with this.

Oh well, no problem with that. I'd like to know if I can enable the AWS band on my phone (I got the c620e version). By the way, working with the modem, can I set some MCCs to be recognised as "home" network? Because I use a MVO and the whole time it says it is roaming (when it actually isn't).

I tried your method but the tool is unable to write to the phone. Keeps getting a "phone stopped responding to memory" error

I did all of that on my HTC 8x (model c620e) and it did work. However, I'm kind of stuck because Windows doesn't detect the appropriate drivers for the phone and all I got is "HTC Composite device". Do you have any driver that I can use?
@cybermiguel It did that to me at first, too. Make sure the PC you are using has Internet, right-click on the "HTC composite device" in device manager, select "update driver software". Then tell it to search automatically for drivers. They will "magically" appear.

weird. I was using QPST 2.7 Build 402, and it was working fine. I was able to use "EFS Explorer" and "Service Programming" to read/write various info. Try a different USB cable or port on your computer?
Try this driver, for me work (disable driver signature)

The screenshot you posted seems to me unuseful: all is already enabled and activated. Can you please post a screenshot of the NAS tab? There you should find if LTE UE OP classes are enabled, and, first of all, if UE RAT includes LTE or not.
