Caching - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

I've read some thread here in this site that file explorer has been cached so that opening folders won't take too long to open, especially the windows folder. i was just wondering how do you do the caching or is there such a program that does this?

Yup... Opera 8.65 also got cache but we can set the size by editing the input.ini file any size let say 2000KB or 8000KB etc..etc. It will replace new files as more and more items coming but the size remain its maximum.NetFront also got this feature. But how to set limit for the cache size of IE so that it will not grow and grow unless we manually delete those and once delete it will clear all. Then starting a page will have to start all over again.
Any one knows about registry hacks to do this?

i'm proud to be a noob!!
Well, i for sure don't know how to do registry hacks cause i'm just a noob adoring all the incredible work the other guys are doing and it just stuns me and leaves in awe everytime somethin' new comes up. so does anybody how to do the thing i mentioned?, registry hacks? anyone?

Opera Error While Clicking On Links in Pocket Outlook

So I installed Opera.
Then when I get an email with a link on it and I click on it I get the following error:
OperaLauch.exe
The file 'OperaLaunch' cannot be opened. Either it is not signed with a trusted certificate, or one of its components cannot be found. If the problem persists, try reinstalling or restoring the file.
A quick look at the Opera folder shows no file under that name. So out of curiosity I went and did a search on the web. Found only two sites talking about this but they are both in Russian. Great.
So obviously the line in the registry that points towards opening links is pointing to this program. I did a quick search and found a number of registry entries that would normally point to PIE but are not pointing to Opera.
Now I was wondering who here knows the registry entry to open items in Pocket Outlook so it uses PIE. Or even better how to make it work so it opens Opera as the default browser when clicking on items in Pocket Outlook.
Now, don't say to do a hard reset as I won't do it on principle alone, since I am sure someone knows and I am not going to reinstall everything I go just because one line in the registry!
Anyone? Or even so, anyone who had this same issue?

I have had this same problem and the only remedy was to uninstall, I posted this before and no one had any ideas as far as I could tell.
there is similar problem with netfront. U need to set pie as ur default browser, then link will be opened w/o probs in PIE.
btw: opera launch is or should be located in windows folder. try 2 search for file within ur pda
Thanks. But what you have told me I already posted on my original post.
I did a search already with the wildcard word "opera," and nothing called Opera Launcher came up. Then I checked the obvious Opera folder and nothing was there either. Hence why I know the issue could be fixed within the registry. That is what I was asking.
You can't set IE as your default browser because as I am sure you already know, there is no option within PIE to set it back to the default browser.
If I did a search on google I am found the registry entries to change back to PIE but there are a number of registry entries. So it could be fixed without a hard reset. But I wanted to see if anyone had figured out a way to use Opera as the Tab browsing is so much more useful and it is just better.
I have not found a fix for Opera, but as an alternative to having to do a hard-reset and reinstall everything again which is of course a hassle... I found the registry entries to switch back IE as the default.
Beats doing a hard-reset.

Anybody figured out the Opera problem?
Okay, after an in depth search I found the entry regarding OperaLauncher.
There is a stupid key at,
HKEY_local_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\efBROWSER
Now I do not know the format to tell it to perhaps use Opera.exe.
Anyone can help?
Bump?.......
Shot, I didnt see this thread until I posted another one that is similar.
But yes, I am interested with finding this too..
Okay, I can see that NO ONE even tried to fix the issue. So I decided to do it myself. I mean, it is not the ultimate fix since I would like for Opera to open as default.
Logic dictates that Opera screwed up somewhere, so what I did was setup PIE to be the default browser by deleting and replacement two specific registry entries.
After that, PIE will still be the main browser when opening links in Outlook, and for everything else I can still use Opera. Since having to copy paste links from Outlook to IE or Opera was annoying enough to delete the browser altogether.
Cheers,
Which key is that?
Check the entry posted on my first post. Delete the Opera entries.
Take a look, type exactly as posted on value 0 and 1 an PIE will start and avoid that silly OperaLauncher problem.

Thanks, I was able to this no problems at all and it fixed the issue - at least by defaulting back to PIE without the error.
Hope I read this correctly and following is useful.....
To enable Opera to open links from emails in Pocket Outlook I did the following:
1. Copied 'opera.exe' (not the large dll) from \storage card\progam files\opera to \windows.
2. Found the entry 'operalaunch.exe' in the registry and changed it to 'opera.exe'.
Thats it - Opera launches when clicking hyperlinks in Pocket Outlook.
You only need to make one change:
In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\: DEFBROWSER is a key called "1". Change the string value from "OperaLaunch.exe" to "\Program Files\Opera\OperaLaunch.exe" (or whereever Opera is actually installed). You need to include the quotes around the string. Save and restart your device. Should work (did for me).
John
Registry Keys
I had the same problems after uninstalling Opera.
Error message: OperaLaunch cannot open , blabla
I had to change the following registrykeys:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\wsp\Shell\Open\Command
String Value (Default) = iexplorer.exe %1
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Shell\Rai\ EFBROWSER
String Value 0 = Pocket IE
String Value 1 = :MSPIE
Good Luck
I managed it just.
I copied all the files from the Opera folder to the windows filder, then changed this,

To just opera.exe
And it worked ... It wouldnt work before, when trying to point it to the storage card, it kept saying "Storage cannot be loaded" or something ... I just realised i had forgot the " from the beginning and end of the string

hi my friend ,I am having the exact same problem you've had.The only problem being is that I am a novice and know nothing about computers,in other words I am not computer literate so am finding it difficult to understand. Is it possible to help me through it in easy steps if you have the time.Regards Anthony

msgqueuedatafilemicrosoft files

Hi there.
I'm having some problems with my "Storage" and "Programs" memories. Both are at 96% full right now which make my magician crash every now and then. Looking for files to delete I found several "MsgQueueDataFileMicrosoft" files on my windows directory. Does someone knows what they are used for? Can I delete them? Between them they steal 15MB storage memory!
Thanks.
depro
Searching for that answer too
in other threads i found only, that you can delete that files, but they come back soon automatically.
But i never looked after, if they really stole the amount of memory an explorer told they should?
Maybe they use the same memory-part?

Opera vs PIE -- speed comparison, move Opera cache folder to MicroDrive?

I am interested in views comparing Opera and PIE. Both came pre-loaded on my T-Mobile Ameo, with Opera as the default. MemMaid makes it easy to locate the PIE cache on the MicroDrive, but it does not support this functionality for Opera. I did a quick speed test comparison, and got much faster results with PIE, possibly because my PIE default cache size is 48MB, whereas I increased the Opera cache to 10MB but did not feel comfortable going above that since it is in Main Memory. Does anyone know of a registry edit to locate the Opera cache folder on the MicroDrive?

I used a trial version of Pocket Mechanic to move the cache files. I can't remember if it was for Opera but you can check their website to see if it'll do it. Hope this helps.
Don't need a reg edit, just change a couple of lines in the /application data/opera/opera.ini to where you want it to point.
you have to copy the /app data/opera/ folder across to the microdrive (after you've edited the .ini
Can then delete the original cache4 and most of the other files that still reside in the mainstorage /app data/opera folder. However deleting chartables and one or two others(can't remember which ones) will mess up opera a bit. You can always restore back from the microdrive folder a file at a time if need be

MyFavs Disappeared after multiple hard resets...?

I did about 3 hard reset to the phone (for testing purposes), and all the sudden the myfavs program does not appear after I did the hard reset the 4th time, I did the hard reset about 2 more times and it did not restore the myfavs program (it suppose to back to its factory settings)
Now I keep getting "your myfaves contacts have been restored" text message every time time I turn on the phone (keeps pilling up with this same text message)which your suppose to only get once.
under the memory setting; storage & program seems to have the exactly same file size as when i had myfavs before.
What can I do? all I want is the default factory settings.. help me.
Hah! You survived longer than I did with it. I hard reset once just to clean my phone up before I started messing with anything (messing with the ROM, etc.) and the MyFaves app disappeared completely from the little tray bar at the bottom and the Today Screen.
Interestingly if you dig around with the file browser in the \windows\ directory I can see all the MyFav5 related applications, but nothing launches.
I'm tempted to try the RUU but to be honest the MyFaves program just ate a ton of memory and resulted in me calling people on accident when I had the Today Screen Plug-in active. So as long as the plan still gets accounted correctly (read as: I don't get charged for calling my 5 people),I don't really care.
I thought I'd let you know you aren't the only one out there with the exact same problem. I would like a solution but it isn't mission critical for me.
I found a solution to your problem. I'll do some more testing later. For now:
Could you look in your \Windows\ directory of your phone and tell me what "My*" applications and files are listed there? (You might have to make the basic file explorer show all files by using Menu>Show All Files).
All the "My" files that are in windows directory (revised & no file missing or mistyped). The some files are repeated to I placed the filesize next to them.

My5Service.exe is the key application. I wanted to make sure you had all the bits to the MyFaves program. The reason you see duplicate names with different file sizes is that the File Explorer program that you have on your hand held suppresses extensions of files for whatever idea.
Now then to fix your problem you are going to need to edit the registry of your device (I used total commander, the .CAB is in one of the Useful cab threads).
A key is missing from the registry after hard reset. WOO!!
Go to \\registry\\HKLM\init\ (using total commander's akward directory structure style)
You then have to add a new key, I used "Launch94" as I was noticing most of the T-Mo crapware was using the Launch9# series of keys
Then edit the key's data to be: My5Service.exe (Must be spelled correctly)
Basically what you did was add in a registry key that tells windows to load up the MyFaves service at boot so all the my faves apps will initialize properly. Putting My5Service.exe into the \windows\startup\ folder doesn't work (I tried it initially).
Soft reset and the phone will act wonky for a second as it is refreshing itself, don't panic. A box popped up saying "MyFaves display set to ON" and all was well at that point.
Then, since you want factory default I'd just remove Total Commander using the add/remove programs feature.
Good lookin out!!!
thanks alot, it did it and it worked.
I made an attemp to reformat the phone again, and myfavs appeared. Funny How I never managed to get that total commander for this phone. Lol im an experience user with registries (now gonna experiment with the register editor an tweak the phone to make phone faster and remove useless I don't need)
Thanks lot you have been helpful and gave fast support!!
Ah well no insult to your ability or experience was meant. I try to be as specific in my write ups as possible so others who might have the same problem can understand the solution, regardless of ability. Tends to make my life at work a lot easier when I do that so it's become a bit of a habit.
Glad it worked for ya and I'm actually surprised it survived another format. But hey all it says is there is some glitchy code in the re-install portion T-Mo has built.

By the way, let me know what tweaks you try. I'd be interested in them myself.
Good seeing people help each other out. The speed tweaks are everywhere, but to remove things you have to recook and flash your phone. (Alternatively, you can flash one of the many available ROMs our cooks have already made or made a custom one based on my own through the link on my signature.)
i got a quick Question how about trying to add it to a already cooked rom is that possible ? bc i love the PDAVIET-ROM BUILD 20931.1.5.0.PV(uploaded) rom but the myfaves tab dont work
does anyone have the my faves.cab?

[Q] Task Manager: How To Change The CPU Priorities?

Eg, when using Task Manager on PC, i go to the CPU prosess tab and now im able to change the CPU priority of any program to: very high/high/medium/low/very low.
Can we do this with WM?
Rn
You can set the priority level of a thread, not of a process.
The system scheduler works quite different from desktop Windows. A thread with a priority level above normal can lock the entire system. An application must be designed very well if it want to change the priority level of one of its threads.
...
id like to 'trial and error'.
i understand the risk of locking the system = my own fault if it does.
but id still like to know your info about the system scheduler and changing the priorties please.
even if i cant get it to do what i want, ill still learn something new

ps, thanks for your reply

Here you find to both subjects a very good answer.
Just install dotfred's task manager, and set the priorities with it. If you screw up, it doesn't matter. A soft reset restores them to the stock configuration.
...
cheers dude, ill download and try it now.

i tried dot fred TM, but didnt like it though :/
cant i just add a .reg for each specific program that i want to have a higher cpu priority?
eg, something like this:
Dword="priority256", Value="XXX"
("XXX" = eg: "255" is normal priority)
???

Not that I'm aware of; this stuff isn't set in the registry, except for a few thread priorities for the file system that are in the boot.rgu, and aren't user accessible. You can get a program called Speedbooster that will automatically watch for specific processes opening, and will then adjust thread priorities to however you want them. Wait, I'll save you the time and money, because it sucks. It changes all thread priorities for a given process, and most of the time makes things worse instead of better. You're better off just doing it with a task manager manually for a while, and then giving up and realizing it's a waste of time. Lol.

Yeah i already found SpeedBooster on google but its not freeware, which cant be cooked into roms
I suppose it would be cool if someone develops an app dedicated to do this = no task manager, no nonsense, no nothing, just a simple small app which lets you select a program and set its priority.. Simples!

I tried increasing the priorities of PIE and UCWEB with sppedbooster, and the problem is that it slows down finger-scrolling dramatically, to the point that the browsers were unusable. You can make a sppedbooster package, but just not distribute it. I cooked it in for a while, when I was determined to convince myself I hadn't blown twenty bucks on a piece of crap.
Why do you need to speed up total commander? I use it all the time, too, and it's pretty snappy. I'd suggest limiting the number of processes and not using manila to optimize speed.

i wanted to speed up total commander because its slow at accessing some folders eg, accessing the windows folder, there is a lag i dont like waiting for and increasing the cpu priorities for TC would reduce this lag
ive deleted the manila package, it eats up way too much storage/ram, so iv made my own skin for a today screen, which is aprox 1mb.
obviously manila is eye candy but im prepared to loose it for the increase in storage/ram.
i also didnt want manila in my rom due to the fact i dont actually like it, ok some stuff is cool eg, album and audio manager the way they rotate and the slide effect but its so gdam popular so most roms look the same, i wanted my rom to be differant. (i didnt want to be a sheep )
you gave me an idea for increasing the touch velocity of the finger scrolling, could anyone tell me whats the highest velocity were able to use?
(both up and down velocities? )
is there one for left and right?
(obviously there must be, but do you know whats it called so i can find it?)
thanks again dude!
Rn
The easiest way to speed up access to the windows folder is just to select 'hide files in rom' in the settings. Then you can get into it quickly. Looking at rom files is pretty useless most of the time, anyway. The downside is that TC then doesn't show the plugins folder in the device root. You can also set shortcuts on the hotlist to folders you might want to access, like startup or the start menu. Finally, you can just limit the number of rom files during cooking to speed things up; the fewer the better, obviously.

id rather have everything viewable in the rom rather than to hide files, useless or not. im sure everyone else would probably do the same, that way you can see exactly what you have got.
i also like to have hidden files always viewable on my pc too. eg, in my kitchen nothing is hidden, ive went through every folder and almost every file has had its hidden properties removed, including the files that dont un-hide when using the hidden files toggle on pc, which was weird
the plugin folder is one of the main functions i use TC for as i dont use regedit.exe or any other registry viewer other than TC. so i wouldnt want to be dissabling that function, if i dissable it i may as well add fexplore.exe back into the rom and use that instead
yeah, thats one of the good things about TC = the ability to create shortcuts with the >>>, however i always make them myself with a good old .txt file with the link wrote inside
agreed, the less files the better, obviously lol
at the moment my rom for blackstone is 103mb ... storage is aprox (18 - 20mb) ... ram is aprox (40 - 50mb) in use after the initial first boot and customisation.
ill search my kitchen for the finger velocity up/down scroll tonight.
if i can improve the scroll ill be nbecause the scroll is really crap!
Rn
btw:
if anyone wants to Alpha test my rom then private message me because i wont be uploading it for public use untill its Beta.
im just finishing the today screen skin but ill start letting people Alpha test it after that.
(basicly to find bugs, recomendations bla bla bla.)
I totally forgot this, but the process manager in sk tools has an option to create shortcuts with a command line that will change priorities. You could create one for total commander, and then use a mortscript that would launch TC, maybe wait a few seconds, then run the shortcut to bump up the priority.
