How does it work? - Wing, P4350 General

I was trying this past weekend to sell something on Craigslist. I remembered a while back that I could take a couple pics of my things to sell on my MDA and post it right from the phone. Now it doesn't work. I get this error saying that it can't process my request. I did a little homework and found out that the site has somehow blocked people from posting ads from their phones. How does the site know I'm posting from my phone?

from what i know by default your browser of choice has a name it uses to identify itself to a website. using schap's advance config 2.02.1.0.0 there is a feature u can check the broswer name, by default it is set to HTC_P4350 Mozilla/4.0 (for my wing) which i am sure website pick up as a mobile browser maybe set it to what the default IE on your computer shows.

maybe you can try using Opera Mobile and masking it as a desktop??
can Netfront do that? i have no idea....

With the Advance config version i mentioned above u can rename the browser agent and yes most websites dont pick up that opera mini is mobile ie myspace from pocket IE will display lame text groups for checking things... just based on the broswer where as opera mini 4 it picks up the normal myspace page if that makes sense.

alright. i'll give it a shot

Yes, netfront can do that.
steps..
1)go to its options>misc tab
2)edit/make a user agent as following..
Code:
title:IE
user-agent:Mozilla/4.08 (compatible; Windows NT/5.1) 6.0
appName:MSIE
appVersion:6.0
appCodeName:Mozilla
language/platform: en / Windows NT 5.1

Opera Mobile: tweaks needed

Opera Mobile is a great browser, but I don't think it does so well on the X1.
In landscape mode, the software keyboard should be completely disabled. This would be much less annoying and would also allow interaction with embedded Flash / Flash websites.
Opera also often makes the L and R buttons activate the start menu, rather than their assignments.
EDIT: And if you're typing into Opera's own search box with the hardware keyboard, it doesn't recognise that you are typing and times out - taking the search dialogue away.
Does anyone know if these things can be fixed? I wouldn't mind disabling the keyboard in landscape mode at the OS level (to affect everything), but it's too useful in portrait to disable altogether.
Thanks
Yes i agree about the software keyboard. That is the most annoying thing on the planet it comes up even when ur not in a text input area. I would love to see a tweak to stop this.
"Disabling" the on screen keyboard...
Try this SIP.
It is an onscreenkeyboard but in fact it displays NO keyboard.
You can change it back to a "normal" keyboard via the normal SIP menü in the bottom middle of the screen.
Better than nothing, I guess..
Greets !
PS: I found this cab in an Opera 9.5 thread around here.
there is a registry tweak somewhere on here, ill try search for it now
Has anyone noticed that the opera that comes on the xperia only lets you go to mobile sites no matter what the setting in the settings tab indicates?
that not opera but the websites you are visiting.
I don't think so because these webpages have full verisons and its determined by the browser u are using. For instance if i switch to the build from the touch hd i can go to the same webpages and view them as full pages but the one on the xperia will automatically go to the mobile versions. I started up a new thread to discuss this

The webpage you visit is informed of the user agent. Most websites use useragent checks to determine which version to show you. I should know I design websites.
Most likely (but unconfirmed without a test) is that the Xperia build has "Sony Ericsson" in it useragent.
I had the same problem, i was trying to view the full desktop version of youtube.com but it kept redeirecting me to the mobile version, even when i clicked the link at the bottom of the mobile site that said 'View desktop version'. I tried everything to stop it from happening i.e changing user agent settings in registry and opera, but it kept on occuring.
For a reason not connected with my problem I got a new Xperia X1 and now I dont have that problem anymore!

So most likely it has to do with an opera setting. Can anyone post there opera.ini file. I tried to change the user agent based on opera's definitions.

He is right. Go to a site like IPChicken.com and look at the Browser string under the 'Advanced' section and you'll see what Opera is reporting to each site you visit. Opera has a way to 'spoof' the User Agent to be like Firefox or IE 6 for example. Type in: about:config in the address bar, and scroll all the way down to User Agent and try 2 and 3 (Firefox & IE, respectively).

Zooming with the dpad is what I miss most from my touch pro. It's scroll wheel works very well for dynamic zoom but it would be nice to try something similar with the xperia optical stick.
one thing that i would like to change in opera is that new tabs open up in the background, is there a way to do this?

are you surfing over Wifi or your mobile networks connect. Website use a series of tricks to workout which version of their site they think is best for your device.
Almost all of these sites however should provide a link which allows you to visit the full site, which you may need to bookmark to aviod repeating the steps each time.

i'm surfing over my provider's network. this wasn't an issue when i was using the non-bundled version of opera. most of the websites i have gone to either don't do browser sniffing or have used the user agent rather which has meant that i've been browsing the full sites.
since switching to the bundled version of opera i'm not constantly getting the mobile versions ...

Opera shows mobile view only on some sites

i got a problem with the preinstalled opera 9.5. on some sites it show only the mobile view and can`t be convinced to show the full desktop site. in the adress line there is then mobile.....com writen and i can`t change the mobile. youtube or google for example. is there a way to change this? (i unchecked the mobile view box in the settings). i also tried 9.7 beta. this one shows full desktop view but crash very often.

for TP2 (sprint)
did u try to change your settings? in the address field type "about:config" and scroll down to user agent. change it to 2 or 3 (firefox or ie respectively). this should make websites recognize your browser differently. it should work for most sites.
first off, thank you for replying. I changed my user agent settings to both 2 and 3. no luck with either. I have to admit I don't which number coincides with which browser (firefox or ie). Any other suggestions??
nothing has worked for me either. I'm using Opera 9.5
You need to change your "custom user agent" string to something like this:
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3)
It's under "user preferences" in opera's "about:config".
Ok, thanks.
1st here is my string under that exact setting:
Mozilla/4.0 (compatible;MSIE 6.0; windows CE; IEMobile 8.12 MSIEmobile6.0) Sprint T7380.
I'm not sure what to edit.
i changed Mozilla/4.0 to 5.0 but wasnt sure what to leave or take away. thanks for helping.

The part in bold identifies your browser as being a "mobile" browser. See what I mean? There are sites that tell you how to "break down" the agent string.
http://www.zytrax.com/tech/web/browser_ids.htm
Go to this site in your mobile phone and see what it returns (it will show you your agent string):
http://webmaster.info.aol.com/browserjs.html
Then, go to the same site with your desktop and see what it returns (mine is below):
Mozilla/5.0 (Windows; U; Windows NT 5.1; en-US; rv:1.9.1.3) Gecko/20090824 Firefox/3.5.3
The trick is to "spoof" a desktop computer. So, you will want to research "user agent string" for Browsers.
Thanks again, used your string, worked like a charm. However i need flash for some websites. Any suggestions? Sprint TP2
Thanks again man, this was bugging me like crazy.

[APP] RELEASED 100109! — Opera Personality Switcher

Here's my initial release of "Opera Personality Switcher," soon to be found in my custom ROM
It gives you a few options for opera's "Personality" -- user agent, proxy, etc. It's handy if you want to spoof a site (I use it to fool sites into feeding me their iPhone content)
Here's what I have so far:
1) OPS iPhone - No proxy, user agent set to match mobile Safari's
2) OPS Opera Mobile Standard - No proxy, user agent set to Opera's default
3) OPS Opera Mobile Standard 2 - No proxy, user agent set to "HTC-P4600/1.2 Opera/9.50 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en)" -- which is the standard for a Fuze (and for a Touch Pro?)
4) OPS AT&T Fuze- Media Net's proxy (wireless.cingular.com), user agent set like on Standard 2
5) OPS Firefox- No proxy, user agent set like Firefox 3.5 on Windows, for a full desktop experience.
I'm no programmer, so this is all accomplished with registry tweaks done cabs, linked in your start menu, in a folder called "Opera Personality Switcher." It works more or less the way AT&T's Enable/Disable proxy cabs did.
This is tested against a newish build of Opera 9.7 (currently 35432, found here), but may work on more recent versions of 9.5 as well. This first release will only work on versions of Opera Mobile that store preference settings in the registry.
Sounds great. Would you also add a desktop mode that sets the user agent to firefox or opera?

Sure. Expect the practical results to be very similar to the Opera (mobile) standard -- except for on those very few sites that actually recognize opera as a mobile browser (my experience is that most don't.
Actually, I might as well put in an IE mobile variation too, to FORCE it to be recognized as a mobile browser ...
Initial version released!

I haven't tested against the official beta yet, but taking a quick look at the cab available from opera's site, it looks like it still relies on opera.ini (rather than the registry entries OPS changes) -- so it seems like it wouldn't work.
I'll look into it making it work with that release (and older 9.5s that work the same way) when I've got a bit of free time later this week.
Just downloaded it and it works fine for me. I am running the 9.7 version of opera. I installed the OPSiphone file and then opened Opera. I had to open it close it and then opened it again and it worked fine. Great app thanks
Good stuff. Now, I have a way to get cingular video to work and get regular desktop pages WITHOUT having two diff browsers. Thanks much.

Opera uses google mobile not google classic

I have been search this forum for an answer to this problem but none have worked.
When i search using the google search option under the address bar in opera it redirects me to google mobile. If i search using the search option when I start opera, the standard homepage search, it uses classic google, in the same spot and using the same search term.
With such a large screen I prefer using classic google rather than mobile.
Is there a way to stop opera from using mobile google?
I have tried changing the UAprofurl enabled to 0
and changing the spoof to 2 and 3.
if i search using the search bar in the internet tab it also seds me to google mobile.
ROM is vodafone UK 1.41
Opera is the standard 9.7 out of the box.
any one else have this problem?
Set Google as your homepage and it will be the classic version. I don't search from the address bar but I suppose the mobile version could come in handy from time to time.

It is functioning correctly - there's nothing wrong with your app or settings. It is a bit strange though. You'd expect all 3 searches to use the same.
Anyway, there's a "sort of" fix for it. It still uses google mobile, but it opens pages properly, not mobile versions.
Do a search, from the search on the internet tab, and when you get the results page scroll to the bottom and click on settings. If you set "Format web pages for your phone" to "Off" and click Save, it stores a cookie on your phone so all links from google mobile open full websites.
I think it's the best of both worlds, but still think it's strange that it doesn't just use google classic in the first place.
Ah well
I have the same issue. I have set Google as my home page, but I would like the google search option to return results in google classic. Would love to know if there is a way of doing this.

Maybe the Sun website has a mobile version and that's where the redirection occurs. Does it happen if you search for the sun newspaper from google classic?

It's probably down to the useragent identifier of the browser. Maybe the IE useragent just identifies it as IE, whereas the Opera mobile one identifies it as a mobile browser. That's just a thought though, as I've not looked into that at all.

One of the ways (may be others I don't know) websites use what's called the UserAgent to determine what type the browser is, and if the site doesn't recognize the UserAgent as a mobile device then it assumes it's not.
UserAgent:
Opera: HTC_HD2_T8585 Opera/9.7 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en)
IE: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; HTC_HD2_T8585; Windows Phone 6.5) UP.Link/6.3.1.20.0
So your guess is as good as mine why the site does what it does.
Same here.
Boring.
For instance, the famous French newspaper Le Monde.
If you search "lemonde" on Google it will show you the mobile version of www.lemonde.fr
How to change this?

Use IE.
Change Opera's UserAgent. Don't know how, maybe it's in the registry somewhere.
The user agent can be changed by opening opera and navigating to opera:config and then under user prefs, there's a setting "custom user agent".
I've changed it to the useragent of my PCs current version of IE, by going to http://whatsmyuseragent.com/ but it doesn't make any difference.
There's also a user agent setting (not under user prefs), but it's just a number so I don't know what it relates to. There's probably a settings file somewhere that specifies a list of useragent strings. (Maybe in windows\opera9 somewhere).

Opera10 Help

Sorry I have to ask this, but I am no where near as savvy with a Windows Mobile device as most of you guys are, but maybe you can help? Just installed Opera10 on my HD2 "T-Mobile US," and for some reason it always defaults to "mobile' sites. Example, I type in youtube.com, but I go to m.youtube.com is there anyway to get to the actual youtube, I know it's possible I've seen it video. Please any help would be greatly appreciated.

I don't use Opera 10, but I know the m.youtube problem is also present in Opera 9.7. In the m.youtube homepage, you should see a "Show Full Version" (something like that) at the very bottom of the page.
Just a thought: Do you have anything in the Opera 10 Settings/Menu page that says "View Mobile pages"? If so, make sure that is unchecked.
I have both Opera browsers on the HD2. Not sure what opera version is the default, but I have no issues with getting the mobile sites. The default Opera will go to the real sites "non-mobile." I decided to get Opera 10 because a saw a video of it installed and you could enable flash, show I can watch "real' youtube videos. I really want flash so I can watch TV from fancast.com. I didn't see and full version option, but there is a check box for "mobile view;" checked off or on there is no difference.
At rhe bottom of the page there are two options Mobile and Desktop, chose the Desktop and bookmark it.

opera 10 doesn't play flash any better than opera 9.7. Youtube and a select few other videos can be watched, but something like fancast will probably require skyfire.
Opera 10 issue
I have recently had a problem with Opera 10. I no always get an error message stating 'could not find proxy server' or 'the url address is busy' etc. Reverting to opera mobile 9.7 removed this problem. Something to consider.
