Opera Mobile: tweaks needed

Opera Mobile is a great browser, but I don't think it does so well on the X1.
In landscape mode, the software keyboard should be completely disabled. This would be much less annoying and would also allow interaction with embedded Flash / Flash websites.
Opera also often makes the L and R buttons activate the start menu, rather than their assignments.
EDIT: And if you're typing into Opera's own search box with the hardware keyboard, it doesn't recognise that you are typing and times out - taking the search dialogue away.
Does anyone know if these things can be fixed? I wouldn't mind disabling the keyboard in landscape mode at the OS level (to affect everything), but it's too useful in portrait to disable altogether.

Yes i agree about the software keyboard. That is the most annoying thing on the planet it comes up even when ur not in a text input area. I would love to see a tweak to stop this.

"Disabling" the on screen keyboard...
Try this SIP.
It is an onscreenkeyboard but in fact it displays NO keyboard.
You can change it back to a "normal" keyboard via the normal SIP menü in the bottom middle of the screen.
Better than nothing, I guess..

Has anyone noticed that the opera that comes on the xperia only lets you go to mobile sites no matter what the setting in the settings tab indicates?

I don't think so because these webpages have full verisons and its determined by the browser u are using. For instance if i switch to the build from the touch hd i can go to the same webpages and view them as full pages but the one on the xperia will automatically go to the mobile versions. I started up a new thread to discuss this

The webpage you visit is informed of the user agent. Most websites use useragent checks to determine which version to show you. I should know I design websites.
Most likely (but unconfirmed without a test) is that the Xperia build has "Sony Ericsson" in it useragent.

I had the same problem, i was trying to view the full desktop version of youtube.com but it kept redeirecting me to the mobile version, even when i clicked the link at the bottom of the mobile site that said 'View desktop version'. I tried everything to stop it from happening i.e changing user agent settings in registry and opera, but it kept on occuring.
For a reason not connected with my problem I got a new Xperia X1 and now I dont have that problem anymore!

So most likely it has to do with an opera setting. Can anyone post there opera.ini file. I tried to change the user agent based on opera's definitions.

I'm starting to think you were right. When i go to like facebook it goes into full desktop version but utube and myspace go into mobile view. I wish i knew more sites with a mobile view lol..

He is right. Go to a site like IPChicken.com and look at the Browser string under the 'Advanced' section and you'll see what Opera is reporting to each site you visit. Opera has a way to 'spoof' the User Agent to be like Firefox or IE 6 for example. Type in: about:config in the address bar, and scroll all the way down to User Agent and try 2 and 3 (Firefox & IE, respectively).

Thank You!!!! That fixed my problem. I'm going to post in the thread i made for this problem. If you don't mind that is

zooming by dpad is a good thing.
for scrolling, the finger cam is perfect.
and scrolling by g-sensor would be a good thing
(i hope the x1 will have one, like ohter htc devs)

Zooming with the dpad is what I miss most from my touch pro. It's scroll wheel works very well for dynamic zoom but it would be nice to try something similar with the xperia optical stick.

one thing that i would like to change in opera is that new tabs open up in the background, is there a way to do this?

i've updated the user agent in opera but i'm still being directed to mobile versions of sites. anyone else having this problem ? any ideas ?

are you surfing over Wifi or your mobile networks connect. Website use a series of tricks to workout which version of their site they think is best for your device.
Almost all of these sites however should provide a link which allows you to visit the full site, which you may need to bookmark to aviod repeating the steps each time.

i'm surfing over my provider's network. this wasn't an issue when i was using the non-bundled version of opera. most of the websites i have gone to either don't do browser sniffing or have used the user agent rather which has meant that i've been browsing the full sites.
since switching to the bundled version of opera i'm not constantly getting the mobile versions ...

Well you know the volume buttons do zoom in and out, right?
It's not as convenient as on the Diamond/Touch Pro, but does the trick.

Make Opera stop loading mobile pages?

Any idea how to stop Opera from loading "stupid" iphone/mobile versions of webpages?
If I use Internet Explorer on the HD2, I get the "real" webpage, while in Opera, I only get a strange mobile-version.

Load Opera... go into settings->display... untick mobile view.

I also suffer with this problem and mobile view is unchecked. Opera randomly opens mobile versions of pages...

Me too. I've unchecked mobile view, and yet it still loads the mobile versions of pages if i visit the url directly. If i visit the page via a google search (or a fave of the full desktop version) it's all ok.

They could be cached. Clear Opera of all history... that should do the trick.

hello, i got a solution for you go in opera and type in the adress bar: opera:config it opens the preferences editor then go to: user prefs and change under: custom user-agent the string to: Opera/10 Windows NT 6.1; U; en) and instead of en you could type in your locale code i.e. de for germany or any country else. then press the save button unter the whole user agent setting page restart the opera ant have fun hope this helps you.

The current value of that preference is:
HTC_HD2_T8585 Opera/9.7 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en)
So we're deleting the bit at the beginning about the HD2? I'm assuming the brackets around the windows bit are unimportant, but we're changing the NT version to 6.1 too?
Also, I'm assuming that if we're still using opera 9.7, then we stick with a value of 9.7 rather than 10?

By default, Opera will only occasionally open mobile pages and when it does, IE is there on your handset to use instead. I found that when I tried the iPlayer tweak in the tweaks thread, Opera then opened every page as the mobile version. I hard to hard reset to get it working properly again.

I'm certain that adjusting the opera config page will solve this problem, since it determines how the browser identifies itself to web servers. It's just a question of making sure you set the right value. I've had to adjust these config pages on desktop firefox before to control preferences. They all use a similar system to get at core preferences.
EDIT: I have no interest in switching to IE to view certain pages. Interestingly though, I'm having the same issue with IE anyway. As i say, I'm pretty sure this fix will work.
EDIT2: If i had to guess, i'd assume that the reason setting the option in the settings page doesn't work all the time, is that it causes the browser to identify itself in a "hi, i'm a phone but i'd like a desktop page please" instead of just "hi, i'd like a desktop page please". Again, i'd speculate that not all webservers differentiate between "mobile phone" and "mobile phone that wants a full desktop page"

I hate having to configure a browser to work, as I test a lot of software and hard-reset the phone quite often.
I'll be using IE instead, untill they release a fix for this.

I suspect you will be waiting a while as there is nothing to 'fix'. This is a mobile browser on a mobile device doing what it is supposed to do and doing what a proportion of users will want it to do.
It can be configured to behave differently for those than want it but you are going to have to actively make that choice. Don't forget that some people will be charged by the byte downloaded and will want their pages as skinny as possible.

My Opera loads desktop pages I would say approx 90% of the time, the ones it won't load properly IE will. So I'm perfectly happy with the browsing capabilities of the HD2. In fact it's just about all I am happy about with! The HD2 is a fantastic web browsing device, far better than any mobile handset I have ever used.

Well, i tried changing it to
Opera/9.7 (Windows NT 6.1; U; en)
without all the "HTC" stuff at the beginning, and it still loads the mobile version of the bbc page, when i visit www.bbc.co.uk
Any ideas?

Can't guarantee this will work, but you could try going into opera:config - User Agent and set Spoof Useragent ID to 3 (for IE). I have had some success with this in the past.

Not sure if you guys have found an answer to this, but for me, the following works.
In opera go to "opera:config"
Scroll down to "User prefs" and open this
Scroll down to "UAProf URL Enabled" and uncheck this (remove the tick)
Restart opera, and that should do it.

Tried it here on the 1.66 ROM, made no difference? still getting directed to mobile websites

Actually, this change to opera:config does work on the 1.66 ROM, but remember to save the change to preferences by hitting Save at the bottom of the page!
Well, when I say it works: it made Opera stop loading the mobile version of Google News, but CNBC still insists on displaying its dumb mobile page when I type cnbc.com. So it's not a 100% fix, but maybe this is down to some websites detecting that a phone is accessing them and so showing their mobile page no matter what?
Any tips appreciated as the HD2 is too good to view mere mobile pages on!

Opera uses google mobile not google classic

I have been search this forum for an answer to this problem but none have worked.
When i search using the google search option under the address bar in opera it redirects me to google mobile. If i search using the search option when I start opera, the standard homepage search, it uses classic google, in the same spot and using the same search term.
With such a large screen I prefer using classic google rather than mobile.
Is there a way to stop opera from using mobile google?
I have tried changing the UAprofurl enabled to 0
and changing the spoof to 2 and 3.
if i search using the search bar in the internet tab it also seds me to google mobile.
ROM is vodafone UK 1.41
Opera is the standard 9.7 out of the box.

Set Google as your homepage and it will be the classic version. I don't search from the address bar but I suppose the mobile version could come in handy from time to time.

Anyway, there's a "sort of" fix for it. It still uses google mobile, but it opens pages properly, not mobile versions.
Do a search, from the search on the internet tab, and when you get the results page scroll to the bottom and click on settings. If you set "Format web pages for your phone" to "Off" and click Save, it stores a cookie on your phone so all links from google mobile open full websites.
I think it's the best of both worlds, but still think it's strange that it doesn't just use google classic in the first place.

I have the same issue. I have set Google as my home page, but I would like the google search option to return results in google classic. Would love to know if there is a way of doing this.

I don't know what to say to that - it works on mine. I always do this as I agree with the OP and prefer Google classic.
Maybe the Sun website has a mobile version and that's where the redirection occurs. Does it happen if you search for the sun newspaper from google classic?
Did you try it on any other sites, or just that one?

Yeah - I just tried The Sun and it does it no matter how you get there.
The above advice does work for making google mobile search open standard versions of sites, and not the google reformatted versions.

The Sun website works perfectly when navigated there via IE though, from a mobile device. What does IE do that Opera can't manage?

It's probably down to the useragent identifier of the browser. Maybe the IE useragent just identifies it as IE, whereas the Opera mobile one identifies it as a mobile browser. That's just a thought though, as I've not looked into that at all.

One of the ways (may be others I don't know) websites use what's called the UserAgent to determine what type the browser is, and if the site doesn't recognize the UserAgent as a mobile device then it assumes it's not.
UserAgent:
Opera: HTC_HD2_T8585 Opera/9.7 (Windows NT 5.1; U; en)
IE: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; HTC_HD2_T8585; Windows Phone 6.5) UP.Link/6.3.1.20.0
So your guess is as good as mine why the site does what it does.

Use IE.
Change Opera's UserAgent. Don't know how, maybe it's in the registry somewhere.

The user agent can be changed by opening opera and navigating to opera:config and then under user prefs, there's a setting "custom user agent".
I've changed it to the useragent of my PCs current version of IE, by going to http://whatsmyuseragent.com/ but it doesn't make any difference.
There's also a user agent setting (not under user prefs), but it's just a number so I don't know what it relates to. There's probably a settings file somewhere that specifies a list of useragent strings. (Maybe in windows\opera9 somewhere).

I found this which is what the user agent relates to, i've set mine to 2 and this makes no difference, might try all of them and get back to you.
The numbers under user agent =
There are 5 options where you can choose from:
1 = Identify as Opera
2 = Identify as Firefox
3 = Identify as Internet Explorer
4 = Mask as Firefox (Opera not mentioned in user agent string)
5 = Mask as Internet Explorer (Opera not mentioned in user agent string)

opera mobile websites

im facing problems with the new opera.
if I open google.com for example it shows me a mobile version. I know that you can enable the classic view when I use a given link. when visiting the website the next time its 'mobile' again!
is there a way to disable the mobile websites in general? I know that my blackstone with old opera don't opens mobile websites.

Hi i recommend you download skyfire 1.5 just google it for the htc hd2 just run the cab once done you'll be able to surf the net like a pc with flash 10.1&silverlight .Yes great as well as having 720p blueray movies&dvds on my htc hd2 i've now got playstation gms tekken 3&crash bandicoot workin on top of the open gl's recommended links given by xda developers thank great site

Unticking Mobile view does nothing (espesically if its already unticked )
I've tried changing the settings in opera:config for UA (changed 1 to 2 and 3) but no luck, so I would like to know this too

In opera:config go to user prefs. Look for one called UAProf URL Enabled. Untick that.
That should make you browse as a non-mobile device.

iplayer website not working fully with Opera 10 beta

I've trawled other thread on both Opera and iplayer, without success, hence opening this one.
Don’t ask me how, but I’ve ‘lost’ the version of Opera which was preloaded on my Vodafone UK HD2, probably by having moved the shortcut via which the browser used to open.
I have since installed Opera 10 beta, and changed the custom user agent to ‘HTC_Touch_HD_T8282’ as per other thread, which is fine, and gets me on to the iplayer site as a recognised/supported device.
BUT, when I click on the ‘play’ icon on the TV show I’ve selected, I get a message from iplayer saying they don’t allow overseas users to view the content. The same can be said for any radio content, live or catch=up.
I’m very much in the UK, and get the same issue whether I use the home or office wireless networks, or over the data connection which was auto-configured for me when I first started on my stock Vodafone UK HD2.
I can get the stream working on Skyfire, but not view it at all well, as it doesn’t open within the application which I used to use with the older version of Opera for streaming media such as that from iplayer.
I looked for an Opera support forum, but the ones I founds aren’t that enlightening. Posters on the slightly better Skyfire forums seem to think that it’s down to the server via which the request to the iplayer server is routed is non-UK, and they start talking about proxy server settings and the like, which means zilch to me I’m afraid.
I’d like to watch via my Opera browser, but I’m at a loss to what to do next. Has anyone any ideas? Do I need to tweak some Opera settings in opera:config, change some settings elsewhere on my device, or find a way of making the iplayer server think (as I indeed am) in the UK? Any help or suggestions anyone can give me would be greatly appreciated, please.
Oh, and the great looking iplayer app isn’t working, as I get consistent error code, which I’ve posted about on the thread for that app.

I remember reading some where that if you downloaded a US version of opera then it won't work. Try downloading a UK version (I could be talking rubbish though).

HD2 iplayer working in Opera 10 beta2
Hi I had a similar problem with my installed opera 9.7 on my vodafone hd2 which stopped working, & rather than factory reset the phone I installed Opera 10 beta 2 which is much better than 9.7 & i dont really miss the pinch zooming much. Anyway I got the same message that said iplayer only available to uk, and as i had recently checked the turbo option in the settings I decided to uninstal 10 beta2 & reinstal it but didnt check the turbo setting & went into the user pref & entered the ‘HTC_Touch_HD_T8282’ as per other thread, & also set the user agent to 2 instead of 1. I then saved & exited went into iplayer mobile & it works the only little niggle is the "download file - iplayer_streaming_n95_wifi.sdp" box which appears each time you want to use it. you have to click save & its only 4kb (THEN PRESS open to play the file) but it is annoying as opera 9.7 didnt bring it up. Im sure there is a setting somewhere that will do the streaming automatically but i havent found it as yet.

Re: Overseas user problem
In some situations (opera mini, new opera turbo mode, etc) opera route the traffic through their own proxy servers, so the bbc website sees their home as the connection country, which in the case of opera is norway,.

keith43 - You may be wrong, as I've searched and searched, and found nothing about a UK-specific version of the Opera 10 beta, or any other version in fact.
Samsamuel – Thanks for that. How would I route the traffic through a UK IP address, or fool the iplayer site into thinking that’s what I’m doing?
Shasarak – I did start to use myplayer, but to be honest didn’t find it the easiest to get on with, particularly when searching for programs. The iplayer app was better, but is no longer supported, apparently.
Rabidrat – Followed your tips, and now have iplayer working just fine. Brilliant! As you say, a little bit of a annoyance having to download a file for each program I want to view, but if it gets me to what I want to be doing, not a huge hassle I suppose. Am I right in thinking the site thinks I’m an N95? Isn’t that a Nokia device?

I suspect Keith was remembering something about Skyfire rather than Opera; it is possible to get Skyfire to use a UK-based proxy server which makes it compatible with iPlayer (although the result isn't that watchable - good resolution, but poor frame rate).

Well, whatever works for you.
Personally I find the video quality you get when using the Opera user-agent hack is so atrocious that I'd really rather not bother; myplayer downloads are still pretty bad quality, but at least they don't actually make my eyeballs bleed.
The latest version of myplayer (1.96) supports iPlayer categories, which helps a little with searches.

I am using Latest Opera 10 Beta 3, I get download "iplayer_streaming_n95_wifi.ram" message, then when i click open nothing happens. Any ideas?

I am on beta 2, and get offered the option to 'save'. If I then open it, I get the stream okay.
I have disabled the 'opera turbo' option and changed the user agent from '1' to '2' (as per rabidrat's post above).
i also have the custom user agent altered to 'HTC_Touch_HD_T8282’ as per the Leo hint and tricks thread.

Thanks, I tried doing the opera:config setting made no difference, still get same problem.
