Connect your device with USB cable in Active Sync (XP) or Windows Mobile Device Center (Vista 32).
Open the Hard-SPL-V2 folder (thanks to Olipro) and run ROMUpdateUtility.exe.
Follow the instructions on the screen, check the boxes in step 2 + 3 and proceed with next & update.
In step 7 when you see the message Replug USB cable! in your device (8), unlug & replug the cable on the PDA.
When you see picture 11 press Finish and unplug the USB cable. Device restarts.
Οk, test it. First press & hold camera button, simultaneously do a soft reset. Don't release the camera button until a four colors screen presented in your device. If you can see this screen, you are ready to flash your favorite ROM.

pano, I need your help.
My TC didn't go through hard spl process, it stucked at 0% and failed.
Is it because I am using an official chinese ROM?
Is there any way that I can change to a English ROM instead?
thanks!

Pano from your screenshots i can assume that you have done this process on Windows Vista. Am i correct? I guess that you didn't face any mysterious problem, right? (Are you using vista 32-bit or 64-bit? ...and do you know if that matters?)
Thanks for this guide, but I'm not sure that works with HardSPL update. This guide is to update one ROM, but not for the HardSPL...
To update the HardSPL, you must connect the phone with normal Windows Mobile, not with Bootloader mode.
The HardSPL process started a WM application to enter in a special mode.

Nope! If you look at the attached image with number 5 on it, it says HardSPL OliNex-2.20.
You can do it either in Normal Window or in bootloader mode as long as you got active sync connection.

Your tutorial works for you because you're ALREADY RUNNING THE HARD-SPL.
If someone has a stock SPL, the signature check fails and it refuses to flash; this is the EXACT reason you have to run my updater with the device connected via activesync so the RUU can push an SPL that gets loaded to memory onto the device... a side-effect is that the GPIOs aren't set properly after boot and you need to replug.
What you guys mean if I decide to do SPL for the FIRST time, I have to do it through Windows activesync rather than in bootloader mode?
Sorry for my dumb questions as I am desperate to SPL my mobile for the first time.
Thanks!

YES THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT I MEAN.
CAN'T YOU FOLLOW MY INSTRUCTIONS?

I really hope someone can help.
I followed the Hard Spl unlock instructions and all seemed to work well.
I then tried to install the original HTC WWE ROM and it froze at 24% reporting an error. I followed the recovery steps but noticed to my horror that the original SPL -1.25.0000 has reappeared.
I am unable to do anything and have the coloured bootloader screen. Attempts to run the Hard SPL unlock freeze at 0% can anyone help please........
What did you do?
Step by step from the beginning!
Step by step to destruction!
I ran the HardSpl unlock utility as per the detailed instructions. It worked well and I saw the new SPL screen. I unplugged the USB as per the instructions and ran the HTC original ROM Rom updater. All went well until IT REACHED 24% on the screen and on the PC - then it froze.
I waited 30 minutes hoping it would unfreeze but sadly............
I then removed the USB cable and attempted a hard reset. This brought me back to the Bootloader screen with the original SPL displayed.
Further attempts to load the HTC ROM produce an error telling me it cannot be installed on this device. I now have a very expensive paper weight.
Any help much appreciated.

Maybe here was the problem...
If you have hard-spl on your machine (in bootloader you see Olinex) after you do not have to replug the usb cable.
Just run the romupdateutility.
Now it seems you have original spl...
In this case you can not install not offical rom. You sould try the offical Orbit 2 rom.
I THINK U HAVE TO TRY HARD-SPL, are u shure u,ve done allready?
Resurrection!
In desperation and believing I had nothing to lose I attempted to flash an O2 Artemis
ROM to the Polaris. It got to 2% failed but rebooted the device to the original ROM.
I had previously tried hard and soft restes and could get no further than bootloader screen.
I don't know or understand what happened but my phone is alive again.
I would wan anybody abut the Hard Spl Unlock.....it caused me major hasslr.
Thanks to those who tried to help me.
clearly you didn't get Hard-SPL, you got the soft-spl
congratulations for your massive fail.

No, it not is the problem of hard-spl.
You did something wrong, according to your step by step guide.
The correct steps:
Download hard-spl.
Plug your pda to pc.
On Pc run RomUpdateUtiliy (from Hard-spl folder)
Now you will see on PDA replug your usb cable. DO IT.
After Few minutes pda will reboot, hard-spl is installed.
Download the rom.
Now, STEP MANUALLY to bootlader. (press and hold camera, and press reset)
You will see a tricolor screen with OLINEX.
On the pc run the RomUpdateUtiliy (from the offical rom folder)
After Few minutes pda will reboot, new rom is installed.

I did try to put back a french ROM. I don't know if it was the original because unfortunately when I first flashed it I was kind of beginner in flashing HTC's, but I tried with the only original french ROM that I found on this forum. The process goes through, but yet the result is the same. Is there any kind of command to fully erase (format) the memory (beside the bootloader) and then try to load a ROM ?
Same for me with restoring SPL ...it doesn't work.
And my device is almost at the same state of damage as yours. See my thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402765
Also the mtty and task8 just restarts my device. Nothing more, nothing less!
So there is no way of restoring SPL with entering the bootloader manually? Not even a mSD-Card Trick out there? I need to get it done because of warranty ;/
You stucked in Olipro hard-spl, this is why restore spl not works...
And unfortunatelly you can not flash spl with micros-sd.
But you can try to flash rom with micro-sd card.

Or ask Olipro, maybe he can help you.
Well I am able to flash my Rom the usual way with USB connection.
But no way of restoring the SPL ;(
"So there is no way of restoring SPL with entering the bootloader manually? Not even a mSD-Card Trick out there? I need to get it done because of warranty ;/"
I do not understand exactly...
Did you try restore original spl with manual bootloader?
you run SSPL from Windows Mobile, then flash a stock SPL NBH, job done.
the whole *point* of Hard-SPL is that it can't be overwritten when it performs a flash so that if anything screws up you don't end up locked out of reflashing in the event something screws up.

So...
You have hard-spl on your machine
You can not restore spl followed the guide in post 2 (WITHOUT manual bootloader)
You can not access your windows mobile (WM does not boot)
You freeze on startup screen
You can not start you phone with steps in post 6
Am I right?
If yes, you stucked in bootloader. And unfortunatelly I can not help you...Maybe Olipro.

Well seems like something like this.
See I have no error because of invalid flashing. I had slight water damage. But some days later my device was working again for a whole day.
Next day it didn't work anymore.
When i startup my device and the WM-Splash shows up it makes "bring" and device turns off.
When i plug in the AC charger i can't even get beyond the O2-Splash.
But I can enter the bootloader and flash what I want, it works ;/
I am also able to connect with MTTY, maybe there is a way with repairing it through MTTY?
Full description of my problems here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=402765
But if i cant get rid of the problems i have to send it to warranty by tomorrow or monday and i think they will notice that i don't have the original SPL on it. So they will screw me ;(((
So, as I am not a noob to computers I would try ANYTHING to get it back on my own!
Is there also no way of restoring it by using the microSD-Card? So is there no way without Windows Mobile? Not even the holy MTTY? Or any way of debugging it by MTTY to see whats going wrong?
I'm screwed!
P.s. I have also tried another battery in the o² shop....didn't fix it ;(

Yes but on "task 8" my device doesn't behave as it should be. It just restarts doing nothing.
Seems like i just have to hope the guys at the service center will not recognize my "not original" SPL. 1% chance ;(
Well thanks for now fktsndr.
Seems like there is really no way of restoring it without Windows Mobile ;(
I thought there would maybe be a "Low Level"-Method of accessing the device and restoring SPL.
Can't think of that there is no way of formatting the device on its lowest level (mtty) or transferring the original SPL per MTTY. Hmm...there should always be a way
Olipro, no way? ;(
if I remember right, the polaris hardSPL is based on an MFG bootloader.
this means you can use mtty commands (mw) to unpatch the write protection then flash the stock SPL.
if I don't remember right, and it is not MFG, then you can still use another mtty command with a special file, but this is more complicated and was not fully tested. you can contact me in PM and we can see.
(you could transfer SPL via mtty, but that is also blocked in hardspl because the mtty transfer uses same code to flash the SPL in this SPL common base)
by the way task 8 is exactly designed to just do a soft reset. nothing wrong with that command.
they really meant task 28. this does a hard reset. you can try that. I guess you already did, but just in case!
edit: I just remembered another way if task 28 doesn't help. ifyou don't mind that the device will stop booting SPL, then you can just do task 2a command in mtty. this will erase SPL, and because of hardSPL overwrite protection it will fail to flash it back from the temporary RAM backup.
the result is that the device will not even boot SPL, it will be black screen. it will boot to the radio bootloader only and O2 won't know what SPL was on it before erase.

You must flash HardSPL first to be able to flash any rom and hardspl will work for blac100 and blac120
More info and instruction about HardSPL
Tips about flashing the rom
Use fully charged device
* Switch off your device by holding the Power button untill a menu pops up
* Go to bootloader by holding Volume down + Power button at the same time
* Connect your device to your PC
* Start BlackStoneCustomRUU.exe and follow the onscreen instruction's
There are countless ROM's out there and everyone has different tastes so there is no point asking any questions on which is better etc etc etc.
I am curretnly using Duttys 2.3 rom and would recommned it or Laurentius26 V9.0
Hope this helps!

I got mine from hong Kong when I was there in Feb, it was in chinese too. then I went to the wiki page, downloaded the Hard SPL, once that was done I just picked any ROM on the wiki page, I chose Dutty 1.7 at the time. copied the NBH file to the root of the SD card, made sure the name of the NBH file was BLACIMG.nbh and then used restarted the device with the key presses mentioned in the wiki and flashed it to english. MAKE sure you have at least 50% charge before you start.
the WWE versions are the english roms. I believe its mentioned in the wiki too.
Since then I've maybe flashed like 10 or more times and tried different roms. it doesn't matter which rom you pick. its a matter of personal preference. just take the time to read the wiki in detail and you'll be fine.
if you are getting a retail touch HD it will come with an 8GB SDHC micro SD and the usual accessories.
as of now I'm on dutty's 2.3

Instructions
Download Hard-SPL package from attachment, extract to an empty folder.
Unsigned_HardSPL_for_Blackstone_OliNex.zip
You must Have Phone Sync'd with PC in Windows Mobile!!!
Run HardSPLWrapper_Blackstone.exe on PC,
make sure it's launched from a local drive (not through network drive, etc.).
if you are on vista, launching as Administrator is recommended,
Follow steps in the RUU
check device for prompts after PC shows loading bar
press Yes on phone if asked.
Some notes: When RUU says it will hard reset, do not worry, it is not going to do that. also when it says the flash will take 10 minutes, ignore that, it will only take a minute or so.
Device should go to a tricolour screen now that says 1.07.OliNex, the SSPL version, which is temporary.
In a bit unusual way, it will take a few seconds for the RUU to detect the device, but do not worry, as soon as the "USB" text on the tricolour screen shows up, RUU will see device.
SPL flashes, device automatically reboots, job done.
To confirm you got it installed,
go into bootloader mode (tricolour screen!) (Switch off your device by holding the Power button untill a menu pops up > Go to bootloader by holding Volume down + Power button at the same time)
verify the screen shows 1.14.OliNex, which is the Hard-SPL version.
I just got my Touch HD over the weekend and I used USPL so that I don't void the warranty:

However, you need to have XP. Tried it on Vista but not successful. Luckily I had an old XP laptop stuffed away somewhere

oh really?
when it says
"Execute blac_uspl.exe;" do i just find the file ont he computer and double click it? or do i have to like install it using the phone?
and " If everything goes well, your device will restart and SPL version label should read "1.14.USPL" indicating that USPL was loaded successfully."
once that is done then... am i done?
this next part is when i want to flash a rom right?
("You can then start RUU update to flash RUU_signed.nbh. Once RUU update is completed, device will restart using regular flashed SPL.
If you want to flash from SD card instead, make sure your SD card is not inserted when you enter the bootloader originally.
SPL will try to install it and would fail if blacimg.nbh is not signed by HTC. Insert the card after "USB" label comes up in SPL but before running USPL.
You can run "blac_uspl.exe ?" to get command line parameter help. Only 1 parameter is accepted and that is the name of an SPL file you want to load. You can load an MFG SPL or HSPL. USPL automatically takes care of allowing unsigned/cooked ROM flashing with any SPL you use.")
man. i dont have XP
thers no way on vista?
thanks for the inconvenience.

To confirm you got it installed,
go into bootloader mode (tricolour screen!) (Switch off your device by holding the Power button untill a menu pops up > Go to bootloader by holding Volume down + Power button at the same time)
verify the screen shows 1.14.OliNex, which is the Hard-SPL version.

or a network drive?

Yes, you need phone sync'd to pc using your usb cable before running HardSPLWrapper_Blackstone.exe?
What I mean by local drive is your C:/ drive or local disk and not by using other drives you may have i.e. G:/, H:/, J:/ etc
When you run HardSPLWrapper_Blackstone.exe a screen will appear on your pc and it will have these steps on it for you to follow. i.e. just follow these steps

Yes you need to extract it from zip as it will not run from within zip folder
Personally I ran it just from the desktop, i.e. I put HardSPLWrapper_Blackstone.exe on my desktop
when you have your phone connected and in bootloader mode at the bottom on the screen it should say 'usb'.
then launch HardSPLWrapper_Blackstone.exe, follow steps, then your done.
As I said put phone back into bootloader mode afterwards and verify the screen shows 1.14.OliNex, which is the Hard-SPL version.
Hello. This is my first time when I'm upgrading my Blackstone ROM and I get some problems so I cannot upgrade it
I think the problem is with active sync, but just I think like that maybe I'm wrong. First of all my active sync cannot connect the phone if the box is ticked for "Enable Faster Data Sync" I tried to reinstall active sync, version still not working. When the box is not ticked the active sync connect the phone but when I go into Rom upgrade setup and try to upgrade the ROM the phone restarts ant freezes in 0% of upgrade, then I get a windows with Connection Error. I take the battery out ant turn on my phone normally again.
Do you know how to solve this error? Or can you tell me other ways which I can upgrade my ROM? I know that its possible to upgrade via memory card but I don't know how. Thank you!
dnlaod any ROM, extract the file then u'll see a file named "ruu_signed.nbh"
change its name to "BLACIMG.nbh" then put it into ur storage card.
Go to bootloader mode then press power button n wait.. after ROM upgrade jus Hard reset it..
PS : read the WIKI

This is all explained in the wiki. Before you do anything, best advice I can give you is to read up on SPL, USPL first!!!
Also, if you follow cRaCKwHoRe's guide (see my signature) you cannot go wrong.

Ok. I will read it later. Thanks!
I'm still having a problem I have have read a wiki and I follow Dummies guide steps but I'm still having a same problem ( Stuck at 0% )
HSPL1 - Downloads
* (HSPL1a) HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.zip
* (HSPL1b) A 1.56+ based rom- Dutty's XT 3.7 linked here
* (HSPL1c) BlackstoneRUUWrapper.zip
* (HSPL1d) Extract each item to its own folder
HSPL2 - Flash new SPL (1.56.OliNex)
* (HSPL2a) Place your phone into its bootloader.
* (HSPL2b) Run HSPLWrapper_Blackstone_156OliNex.exe from the download in step (HSPL1a) and follow it as normal.
I follow these steps but at the last one my phones just freezes at 0% of update, so I can update to 1.56.OliNex SPL
Is me here doing something wrong or is it something wrong with my phone?
Does any one know whats wrong?
never mind. fixed by my self

how?? i have same problems..
I tried flashing the following to my HD2. Other ROMs have worked fine.
Duttys_Leo_Sense_2.5_5.2.23540.5.5.0_2.10_HG_V1_Radio_2.08.50.08_2_WWE
This time, when resetting it's hanging on the O2 screen. This means I can't get into the phone to try reflashing. How do I fix this please?!!!

You should take a look at the mtty thread if you want to recover from a bad flash...
Grtz,
Degake
Crap. I know nothing about this. noob!
This is going to be long and difficult isn't it?

If you post your problem in that thread, the experts over there will give you all the detailed steps and it won't be so bad after all
And I think that anything would be better than to buy a new HD2?
Grtz,
Degake
No, but you shoulda read the n00b flashing guide before flashing...do you have HSPL on your phone? Do you have it SIM-unlocked? Did you flash using activesync or sd card?

I did. I have most rcent HSPL, flashing using activesync and have done 4 "successfull" ROM upgrades.
This one appeared to be fine but when it did auto-reset it's now hanging and not booting into anything useful.
Thanks degake.
If a hard reset doesn't help then MTTY might be the only way out
Problem FIXED
Solution: Followed these steps
"This will remove the need for users, x64 in particular, to use “Unsigned Drivers.” Also since in Vista SP2 (x64 & x86) they removed the “F8” options Completely!
Files Needed:
Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider
Remove Watermark V0.8
1: Run the Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider and select “ENABLE TEST MODE” and Press Next
2: There will be a warning to REBOOT, Press “OK”
3: Go Back to Driver Signature Enforcement Overrider Select “Exit” then Click “Next”
4: REBOOT
5: Run the “Remove Watermark V0.8” for you OS type (x64 or x84)
6: In the Command Window type “Y” and wait for the process to complete
7: Once complete REBOOT your system and begin the driver install"
listed in post 2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=623356
Then
*Bring device into bootloader (Reset + Hold Vol Down), This will show the Red, Blue, Green screen showing "Serial"
From here I was able to re-run the customRRU file to flash the ROM again. (this may have been jumping the gun a little!)
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction guys.
that'll be MTTY!! Only had to use it once myself but it's a god send

Hi folks,
Had the same problem today with a bad flash, phone wouldnt boot up past o2 welcome screen etc etc.
I fixed it by just going into bootloader (hold volume down button on the side of the device while holding the power button down for 3 seconds) and installing the o2 stock (1.43) rom from my pc.
Edit: Cant seem to post the link as im a new user but "Football" posted it on this forum on 23rd of December if you need to search for it.
Sorry if this seems like a double post of the OPs solution but some people could be confused by the MTTY thread (I was) when in reality theres no need to even look at it.
Hope this helps someone.
Greg
Thanks for posting that comment. I did wonder if MTTY had anything to do with the solution (I dont even understand properly what MTTY is!) so I posted everything I did.
I had a feeling that I could have avoided those steps and just gone straight to the bootloader and you've proved me right. it's a quick and easy solution to a slightly scary problem!
