I posted this in another forum, but thought I'd give it a try here.
I'm using Verizon's Wireless Sync for my work email and contacts. The bad part is, by using that it's enabled the Lock feature after a timeout/standby/power cycle. I know the registry keys that disable the PIN requirement, but whenever I sync, it resets them.
I tried the Zenyee StayUnlock program, but it's not working for me. Nothing I can find has been able to keep those entries from being reset
Any ideas?
Bump for some help
Oh, and the registry settings reset when I soft reset also...
I have the same problem except when I change the reg keys it disables the lock until the next day. I don't think there is a way around it. I have done some searching but not a lot and it doesn't seem like there is any other way.

I can get it to stay..... as long as I don't sync or reset (soft or power cycle).
I had found some people were able to use the StayUnlock program to help keep those entries from reverting back, but I couldn't get it to function.
It is QUITE annoying...
Hi used this StayUnlock program and it worked really well for me never have to enter a password to unlock.
Also, you don't have to use Wireless Sync if your server is Exchange, then you can configure ActiveSync to sync over the air, and this StayUnlock works really well. it just gives me a reminder when my server push the security policy, but it reverse it.
Unzip this, create a shortcut to it and dump it into the \Windows\Startup folder.
Hope this helps.

Use ActiveSync OTA? Never heard of this...
I tried the StayUnlock. It didn't work for me. The reg settings would reset as soon as I ran Wireless Sync or reset the phone.
I installed the program, made a link to it from the Startup folder, but still no go. Do you change the settings BEFORE installing, or AFTER.
Ok, I got it to sync to the webmail server for my Outlook. But it's not a push service.
That's what I like about Wireless Sync. It's a push.

I was having constant sync problems. I was not able to get a connection with the usb cable, but was able to connect with bluetooth. I finally found out that I needed to have these files allowed full access in zone alarm: raipmgr.exe, wcescomm.exe, wcesmgr.exe. These are all located in the program files/microsoft activesync folder. I found many suggestions that firewalls could cause problems, but I tried with zone alarm off and still had the connection problem. It started working immediatly when I added those files to the allowed list in zone alarm.
Also, after fixing that problem I was getting errors syncing. Basically it would show that it was working until it got to the notes. Then it would give an error. Nothing actually synced. I found out this was happening because I did not have outlook set as my default mail program. I use thunderbird for email and outlook for contacts and calender etc. Once I changed outlook to the default mail program it has worked perfectly.
I hope this helps some people as I was looking all over the place for a fix.

Great !
Thanks for that post. Helped me out. I had activesync 4.1 working for everything except contacts. I changed the contacts program within internet explorer from 'microsoft office outlook' to 'address book' and now it works !
Software firewalls (desktop) are more trouble than they're worth. I have basic firewall on my router and no software firewall at all, it's been that way for over 2 years. They are a complete waste of time and system resources.
Zone alarm in particular is lot of trouble, for many online applications.
Gazzrenn, I disagree, but I do know what you're saying, particularly if you use a non-portable PC with only one network...
Yes, I run a decent firewall to protect myself externally (IPCop) and that's fine when you're on a LAN you know and trust, but what if you're using a laptop and connect via WIFI to a hotspot? Or via a client's network?
Sure, you could bring a firewall/router device, but that could be seen as overkill.
Advising people to turn off firewalls to get activesync working is a Bad Idea unless people really know what they're doing, what they're risking, and how to alternatively protect themselves if appropriate, particularly if they use other networks.
Techspy,
Did you uninstall ZoneAlarm? Even when disabled, I wonder if it inserts itself passively into the TCP/IP stack which causes a problem for AS4.
I had pretty much the same problems as techspy. I did the allowing of those files and still no sync. But then I found another file, Application Manager that related to AS 4.1 also. I allowed it also and then I could sync. But dayam! This thing is slow to sync.
Funny thing is, I was syncing ok before I hard resetted after I got rid of the AV and skype. Go figure?
Also, Outlook does need to report that it is the default email client, BUT, after my first sync, I reset OE to be default and have no problems syncing it that way. Again...go figure?
Now, how to speed up the boot?
installed activesync that came with my xda exec yesterday. it synced once and i was able to browse the files on the pda from my pc.
but now however, it won't sync, just says connecting on the pc end and no syncing logo in the status bar on the xda. upgraded to activesync 4.1, but still the same problem.
also, i can no longer bring up the phone screen, i can make calls from the contacts list and receive calls, but the phone screen no longer pops up (sound still plays after clicking the phone icon thou).
only got the xda yesterday and set it up into personal mode, installed clearview pdf reader from the cd.
no other changes.
any ideas?
does soft reset erase all your documents and contacts?
thanks.
Do a soft reset and the problem will be fixed.
Tip: XDA EXEC runs faster with less glitches in BASIC mode. Thought I mention it !
No, a soft reset will not erase any of your data. I would certainly start there. Do you (or a friend) have another PPC device to connect to your computer to see if A/S will work with that device?
I would think that since you just go it yesterday, today would be a good day to do a Hard Reset (if the above does not fix it). Chances are good you will wind up doing one anyway, so do it now to avoid further frustration and before you have a bunch of programs and data loaded.
Just my .02
Forgot to mention, soft reset doesn't erase anything, its like rebooting your PC.
Hard reset DOES erase, so be careful of this one !
i've just soft reseted it and now the phone screen works.
i changed the size of the icons and after the soft reset, they were back to normal. was this the cause of the phone screen problem?
i don't have another ppc around, but i can connect to my pc via bluetooth and transfer files both ways but not sync.
is there anyway to view/add/change the files on the xda without syncing/bt ie using the cable and windows explorer?
i don't expect to be emailing much from the xda, so is there any benefit to syncing?
i'll be doing a hard reset soon, the xda went into personal mode before i had time to read up waht the different modes did in the manual.
wifi & bt work very quickly thou, which is nice.
Don't know about size of icons thing as I haven't tried it.
The sync functionality doesn't just sync email, it does sync your calendar, notes , tasks and contacts too. It also syncs files for you.
You can set it so it syncs just the stuff you want it to sync including non (during setting up your sync just tick what you want synced or untick everything to sync nothing).
is there anyway to view/add/change the files on the XDA without syncing/bt ie using the cable and windows explorer?
i've had to soft reset the xda again as the phonepad was playing up again.
i'm going to hard reset into corporate mode, what do i need to save beforehand?
reading from another forum, i see that i have to save mms settings (done) and 3g settings (don't know where they are). anything else?
regards,
haroon.

Do you want to never Sync or only when you choose ? If never Sync when you installed ActivSync it gave you wizard to configure what you want syncing, here you could have unticked everything.

I kept getting that in Personal Mode, since changing to Basic mode I don't get the problem anymore. To change to Basic mode , click on your start menu then Programs then Install type.

I have never used corporate mode before so I don't know. I did come across another post on this forum which had all the settings for corporate mode listed. Try doing a forum search for setup.
got it running in corporate mode now, all seems so good so far.
still won't sync thou, doesn't get past the connecting stage.
i'm going to try reinstalling activesync from the cd and uncheck everything from the setup wizard.
i'll post the results a bit later.
thanks for the info linux!
Have you checked your personal Firewall (and/or XP's built in Firewall) as this will prevent ActiveSync making a connection..
These are the entries in mine:
Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions Tab
1. ActiveSync Application
2. ActiveSync Connection Manager
3. ActiveSync RAPI Manager
4. ActiveSync Service
If you click on the first one > Change Scope
Choose (*) Custom List
Entry: 169.254.2.0/255.255.255.0
This is set the same for 1->3..
The 4th option requires Port 26675 open on TCP
As I understand it, ActiveSync 4.x creates a TCP/IP connection similar to a TCP/IP network connection so a Firewall can screw things up a treat.
Might also be worth checking in your TaskManager list for the following executables when you startup ActiveSync:
1. WCESMgr.exe
2. wcescomm.exe
3. rapimgr.exe
These relate to the executables that are setup in those 1-3 services in Firewall Exceptions.
Hope it helps..
For some strange reason, Activesync keeps running on my XDA Mini S, I have no idea why can anyone help?
Basically after a soft reset if I check the memory no programs are running, but after sometime if I have done nothing with the phone, and check, it is running again, I close it down and then again after a while it is there.
This is not whilst or after connecting to my PC it is strange...
Is it because u have a wifi connection over which is constantly trying to sync with your pc?
Believe this is a known bug (sure I've seen something mentioned on here before)
try a search over this forum
Can't find anything in previous posts...
I mean the only thing my phone syncs is my desktop...it is not set up for any other sync, except for USB..no schedule nothing, so why activsync keeps launching is a mystery to me...
Any further help will be much appreciated...
Are you using any weather plugins etc? Anything that might request a remote sync? Use something like memmaid to check your services to see if you've got anything hidden like this.
V
Nothing at all...
Will try to see what is going on with memmaid
I also have the same thing happening. It only syncs over usb but as someone said must be when I connect over wifi its kicking in.
Thing is when I shut it down my wizard seems to show a better turn of speed. Wish I could get it to stop trying to connect only when hooked with usb to be honest. The less programs running the speedier the wizard will be.
Creat a dummy server sync in activesync. Put anything as server address and that shd be fine. Ignore unresolved .... message after syncing.
victor
MemMaid has done it...I think...
Thanks to Vijay555 for suggesting using MemMaid.
Checking the running PROCESSES on MemMaid I found something called repllog.exe which I deleted and it stopped the ActiveSync running.
Then I did a soft reset and synced. The file is back where it should be but no unexpected incidences of ActiveSync running. I guess the repllog.exe file had become corrupted.
Be warned that the unit might seem to run a little slower after the soft reset, but within a few clicks it is back to normal.
Thanks for your time & help guys
Create a fake new ActiveSync connection. I say fake because you just need to make up the server name... put anything you want there. After you have created the connection, look at the scheduling options and make sure that it is not set to automatically synch. Once you have disabled automatic synching, you can remove that fake connection and your problem will be solved. I found this on www.pdaphonehome.com .
Sunnychad
replog should know what it's doing. Glad it sorted your problem out though!
V
Not so cured...
OK it now only kicks in every 4-5 hours so I will try the fake server route...

Just tried that and hopefully it works. Active really does seem to be one of the main reasons the Wizard slows up.
When you have synced with a pc ie to install a program ( only reason I use AS ) will I then have to close the app down on my wizard in running programs or will it dissapear itself and not return ?
The fake server technique works by not starting ActiveSync on its own. However, if you start it in order to sync via bluetooth/usb, you will still have to manually end task it in order to close it again. The good thing is that you won't have to worry about it starting by itself, which will save you both memory and processing power, as well as the fact that you don't have to install any third-party tools for this solution.
Good stuff. I could always tell when it was running by the speed of my Wizard. Another gr8 tip.
My Vario II is set to automatically do a send/receive to check my pop3 email account every 15 mins. This was working fine but suddenly has stopped and no longer checks automatically. I have checked all the settings and they all seem to be correct. It may or may not be linked but I have also been having difficulty getting active sync to work recently. Any ideas?
Thanks
Michael
P.S. I should add that if I manually select send/receive then it works fine, it just won't do it automatically.
I take it you're running WM5. There is an option to do it, but it sounds like you already have it set.
Oh, check your roaming settings. The phone may think you're roaming, on WM6, there's a checkbox under the mailbox settings to download mail even when roaming. I don't have a WM5 to refer to in order to tell you exactly where the setting is.
I must add my related problem to yours, I hope you don't mind. The option doesn't seem to exist at all with WM6. Has anyone been able to set the pop mail to download automatically?
Yes it's WM5. I checked and can't find that anywhere in the menus. All I can think off is that i've installed something then removed the programme and somehow it's changed a setting. Looks like a hard reset is on the cards unless anyone else can help.

You didn't do the "Fake server trick" did you? That sets your Active sync connection to manual. What kind of problems were you having with AS?
Mike
I don't think so, or at least I haven't done that intentionally. Basically active sync won't connect at all anymore to my PC. It's all very frustrating!

Have you found a solution? We are having similar problems on the new Kaiser:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=332362
It sounds like an issue I had. If you are pressing the power button to stand-by the device it will not check your emails automatically for you. This is something that has been fixed in WM6.
To get around this add the "device lock" today screen item and use that instead of stand-by-ing your device.
Thanks. The Kaiser is a WM6, so it may not have been fixed....I will try the device-lock-then-let-it-go-into-standby-by-itself trick to see if this works...

I can confirm this works!
All,
I've a problem with the exchange server settings. It looks like my admins had pushed the new exchange policy this afternoon. All of a sudden my phone is asking for a password. I had installed the "Stay Unlock.cab" which worked perfectly so far. Now, I'm getting the password prompt when i unlock the device.
But the actual problem is, when I enter the password it takes me to the password screen and asking me to enter a new password. When I enter a new password it fails saying "An Error occurred saving password settings."
Now, I cannot access my phone. I have so many applications installed and I haven't backed up some of my settings & data. So I am hesitant to do a hard-reset and wipe out 3 weeks worth of my work/customization.
Help please!!
Thanks
Nash (TmoUS HD2 - Stock ROM)
I end up hard resetting.
after, 10 times of invalid password entry in the lock screen, it automatically wiped all my data.
anyway I installed hspl2 and installed energy rom, which is much better and beautiful than the stock rom. I am re installing all my applications now...
Thanks
Hello All,
Now I have a weird problem. I could install all the apps and run it properly, but the moment when I sync my outlook with the corporate exchange account, everything stops working. It looks like the Exchange setup is blocking unsigned apps & I could not install any cab files anymore or start an already installed program like CHT Editor. If I remove the email account, everything works fine again. Has anyone come across this problem?
I'm not sure what was changed in the Exchange server. Can someone please help?
Thanks in advance.
Right now, I have Kumar's ROM & I tried Energy ROM too and it looks like I cannot get around this issue. If I remove the Exchange account everything goes back to normal. I also have "Exchange Stay Unlock.cab" installed which doesn't seem to work anymore. Is there anyone else having the same issue?
Is it possible that the exchange admins put a policy to your telephone that its not possible to install software. ,Maybe that is the problem. Then when you delete email, also delete this policy and then its possible to install progs
It looks like it, before & after deleting the exchange sync it asks me to restart. after deleting the problem goes away. Is there anyway to change exchange's behaviour/policy?
The main problem is not just the installation, even the installed apps don't open anymore. Like the "Arkswtich" task manager which I use all the time or any unsigned apps I think. Opera works fine.
could you tell me, what/how I should ask my admins?
Hello All,
It looks like the policies are being updated and I cannot run or install the any unsigned app. I tried to install the cabs to "Remove app lock, unsigned app, etc..", but I can't seem to install these cabs too. Now, I can't even open the registry and update the policies key manually as I can't open a regsitry editor app.
I tried the registry editor from PC (CeRegEdit) and it won't let me update from that too. I totally stuck with this problem now.
Is there way to sign an app (cab file) or make it trusted?
Thanks
I'll continue to update this thread as no one else seem to have this problem.
I used "msigner.cab" to sign couple of cab files and tried to install and it still failed saying "untrusted...". So, I spoke to my admins, those guys plainly said they don't support windows mobile. Now, I don't have an option.
I wonder, why microsoft would enforce a policy on a wm6.5 devices?
Next step.. I reflashed again, installed all the cabs I needed and setup my device. this time, I'm hoping that I don't have to reboot (I know it's tough ) after syncing up with exchange. I'll sync only the emails (in Exchange) and others through the pc (contacts, tasks, calendar).
Finally, I installed all the reg editors before connecting to exchange. Then I synced only the emails with the exchange server and before rebooting the phone, I used the reg editor to change the key (HKLM\Security\Policies\Policy) values as mentioned in other forums (sdkcerts) to 0. Now it looks like its permanent and not changing even after the reboot!
Thanks

Update I think http://blogs.microsoft.co.il/blogs/...curity-policy-for-windows-mobile-devices.aspx can help in resolving, never tried it though
sorry, it is in the "HKLM\Security\Policies\Policies" folder.
I changed the following keys..
00001005 to 1
00001006 to 1
Let me know if it doesn't work, I can export and email you the policies key from the registry.
