weird glitches after installing activesync - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro General

installed activesync that came with my xda exec yesterday. it synced once and i was able to browse the files on the pda from my pc.
but now however, it won't sync, just says connecting on the pc end and no syncing logo in the status bar on the xda. upgraded to activesync 4.1, but still the same problem.
also, i can no longer bring up the phone screen, i can make calls from the contacts list and receive calls, but the phone screen no longer pops up (sound still plays after clicking the phone icon thou).
only got the xda yesterday and set it up into personal mode, installed clearview pdf reader from the cd.
no other changes.
any ideas?
does soft reset erase all your documents and contacts?
thanks.

Do a soft reset and the problem will be fixed.
Tip: XDA EXEC runs faster with less glitches in BASIC mode. Thought I mention it !

No, a soft reset will not erase any of your data. I would certainly start there. Do you (or a friend) have another PPC device to connect to your computer to see if A/S will work with that device?
I would think that since you just go it yesterday, today would be a good day to do a Hard Reset (if the above does not fix it). Chances are good you will wind up doing one anyway, so do it now to avoid further frustration and before you have a bunch of programs and data loaded.
Just my .02

Forgot to mention, soft reset doesn't erase anything, its like rebooting your PC.
Hard reset DOES erase, so be careful of this one !

i've just soft reseted it and now the phone screen works.
i changed the size of the icons and after the soft reset, they were back to normal. was this the cause of the phone screen problem?
i don't have another ppc around, but i can connect to my pc via bluetooth and transfer files both ways but not sync.
is there anyway to view/add/change the files on the xda without syncing/bt ie using the cable and windows explorer?
i don't expect to be emailing much from the xda, so is there any benefit to syncing?
i'll be doing a hard reset soon, the xda went into personal mode before i had time to read up waht the different modes did in the manual.
wifi & bt work very quickly thou, which is nice.

Don't know about size of icons thing as I haven't tried it.
The sync functionality doesn't just sync email, it does sync your calendar, notes , tasks and contacts too. It also syncs files for you.
You can set it so it syncs just the stuff you want it to sync including non (during setting up your sync just tick what you want synced or untick everything to sync nothing).

is there anyway to view/add/change the files on the XDA without syncing/bt ie using the cable and windows explorer?
i've had to soft reset the xda again as the phonepad was playing up again.
i'm going to hard reset into corporate mode, what do i need to save beforehand?
reading from another forum, i see that i have to save mms settings (done) and 3g settings (don't know where they are). anything else?
regards,
haroon.

Do you want to never Sync or only when you choose ? If never Sync when you installed ActivSync it gave you wizard to configure what you want syncing, here you could have unticked everything.

I kept getting that in Personal Mode, since changing to Basic mode I don't get the problem anymore. To change to Basic mode , click on your start menu then Programs then Install type.

I have never used corporate mode before so I don't know. I did come across another post on this forum which had all the settings for corporate mode listed. Try doing a forum search for setup.

got it running in corporate mode now, all seems so good so far.
still won't sync thou, doesn't get past the connecting stage.
i'm going to try reinstalling activesync from the cd and uncheck everything from the setup wizard.
i'll post the results a bit later.
thanks for the info linux!

Have you checked your personal Firewall (and/or XP's built in Firewall) as this will prevent ActiveSync making a connection..
These are the entries in mine:
Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Exceptions Tab
1. ActiveSync Application
2. ActiveSync Connection Manager
3. ActiveSync RAPI Manager
4. ActiveSync Service
If you click on the first one > Change Scope
Choose (*) Custom List
Entry: 169.254.2.0/255.255.255.0
This is set the same for 1->3..
The 4th option requires Port 26675 open on TCP
As I understand it, ActiveSync 4.x creates a TCP/IP connection similar to a TCP/IP network connection so a Firewall can screw things up a treat.
Might also be worth checking in your TaskManager list for the following executables when you startup ActiveSync:
1. WCESMgr.exe
2. wcescomm.exe
3. rapimgr.exe
These relate to the executables that are setup in those 1-3 services in Firewall Exceptions.
Hope it helps..

Active sync problem

My xda2 is stuck as a guest on my computer. it won't detect it anymore. it just logs on as guest. i've done everything i know, including reinstalling active sync, restarting computer, disconnecting cradle, deleted the previous partnership.
i opened the active sync program on the xda, it has 2 pc partnerships but both have the same computer id. anyone know a way out of this short of doing a hard reset which worked but onced i restored the back up, it went back to guest hence no synchronization with outlook.
tia.
Same problem
I'm having exactly the same problem.
When I uninstall ActiveSync and reinstall it, it synchronizes only once, then, again, I'm stuck as a guest.
can anyone help me with this? please
Unfortunately, no one seems to have an idea.
What I did (after I read your first message) is to make a hard reset then manually install the other programs.
Now, everything is fine (but still no idea about the problem)
if you dont want stay guest rename your ppc with a other name
I already tried this. Didn't work
This happens to me regularly. It seems to be a quirk of using my XDA II with 2 pcs.
Try deleting the partnership from the PC and recreating it. Should work fine. A hard reset is a bit drastic!
SMW1
If stuck on guest settings:
Kill ActiveSync on the PC using task manager
Take the XDA out of the cradle
Open ActiveSync on PC
Delete all partnerships
On the XDA go to Start -> Settings, System tab, tap ‘About’, Device ID tab and change the name to something else
Soft-reset the XDA
Place it in the cradle
Create a NEW partnership
That's it

Activesync....keeps running...(NOW CURED 30-12-05..sort of)

For some strange reason, Activesync keeps running on my XDA Mini S, I have no idea why can anyone help?
Basically after a soft reset if I check the memory no programs are running, but after sometime if I have done nothing with the phone, and check, it is running again, I close it down and then again after a while it is there.
This is not whilst or after connecting to my PC it is strange...
Is it because u have a wifi connection over which is constantly trying to sync with your pc?
Believe this is a known bug (sure I've seen something mentioned on here before)
try a search over this forum
Can't find anything in previous posts...
I mean the only thing my phone syncs is my desktop...it is not set up for any other sync, except for USB..no schedule nothing, so why activsync keeps launching is a mystery to me...
Any further help will be much appreciated...
Are you using any weather plugins etc? Anything that might request a remote sync? Use something like memmaid to check your services to see if you've got anything hidden like this.
V
Nothing at all...
Will try to see what is going on with memmaid
I also have the same thing happening. It only syncs over usb but as someone said must be when I connect over wifi its kicking in.
Thing is when I shut it down my wizard seems to show a better turn of speed. Wish I could get it to stop trying to connect only when hooked with usb to be honest. The less programs running the speedier the wizard will be.
Creat a dummy server sync in activesync. Put anything as server address and that shd be fine. Ignore unresolved .... message after syncing.
victor
MemMaid has done it...I think...
Thanks to Vijay555 for suggesting using MemMaid.
Checking the running PROCESSES on MemMaid I found something called repllog.exe which I deleted and it stopped the ActiveSync running.
Then I did a soft reset and synced. The file is back where it should be but no unexpected incidences of ActiveSync running. I guess the repllog.exe file had become corrupted.
Be warned that the unit might seem to run a little slower after the soft reset, but within a few clicks it is back to normal.
Thanks for your time & help guys
Create a fake new ActiveSync connection. I say fake because you just need to make up the server name... put anything you want there. After you have created the connection, look at the scheduling options and make sure that it is not set to automatically synch. Once you have disabled automatic synching, you can remove that fake connection and your problem will be solved. I found this on www.pdaphonehome.com .
Sunnychad
replog should know what it's doing. Glad it sorted your problem out though!
V
Not so cured...
OK it now only kicks in every 4-5 hours so I will try the fake server route...

Just tried that and hopefully it works. Active really does seem to be one of the main reasons the Wizard slows up.
When you have synced with a pc ie to install a program ( only reason I use AS ) will I then have to close the app down on my wizard in running programs or will it dissapear itself and not return ?
The fake server technique works by not starting ActiveSync on its own. However, if you start it in order to sync via bluetooth/usb, you will still have to manually end task it in order to close it again. The good thing is that you won't have to worry about it starting by itself, which will save you both memory and processing power, as well as the fact that you don't have to install any third-party tools for this solution.
Good stuff. I could always tell when it was running by the speed of my Wizard. Another gr8 tip.

stopping activesync
is there a way to stop activesync from running in background on my 8525? my pda freezes every once in awhile and have problems with connecting to pc. to connect to pc i have to go to memory and shut off activesync before plugging in usb. i've tried to delete repllog.exe in the notification queue with no luck. help LuXx
Reducing lock-ups and freezing:
A key consideration here is the active sync application that is linked with many lock up problems - particularly overnight or during active syncs auto scheduling process.
A quick way to temporarily shut Active Sync down (as well as any other programmes running in the background) would be say Magic Button or HTC X Button which are quicker than using the running programmes in the memory menu to do this.
However Active Sync can start again by itself via various scheduling routines. There is a way to prevent this known as the "Fake Server Trick":
This 'server trick' was discovered by an Aximsite forum member known as Invid
This post originally created by IamNotMe fourpages.co.uk (Adapted)
"1. Turn on your Device
2. Go to Start > Programs > Activesync. This will open the Activesync program.
3. Tap Menu at the bottom right hand corner of the screen. This will bring up the Options Menu. Notice the option Schedule... is greyed out? This is the all-critical option we need to get access to. But as it's disabled we can't change Activesync's default synchronisation schedule.
Ok, so how do we enable the Schedule option? Easy!!! Fool Activesync into thinking there is an Exchange Server to sync with:
1. From Activesync's Menu tap on Add Server Source.
2. In the following screens you can enter any old garbage. It does not matter, but just in case your unsure, just type the following in the indicated boxes:
Server Address: fake
Tap Next
User name: fake
Password: fake
Domain: fake
(Ticking save password or going into the Advanced menu makes no difference, so no need to bother).
Tap Next
Untick all of the 'Data you want to synchronise' options
Tap Finish
3. Ok, we're done creating the server. You should now see in Activesync's main screen your normal Activesync connection(s), and a new connection called Exchange Server.
4. Go back into the Menu, and lo and behold the Schedule option is now enabled! Go ahead and tap it!
5. You will see that both options in the Schedule screen may be set to Every 5 Minutes
6. Using the drop downs, change both the Peak times and Off-peak times boxes to Manually.
7. Press the OK button at the top right of the screen.
Congratulations! Activesync is now gagged from opening on it's own and ruining your life! Your work is not done just yet though - time to clean up and get rid of the now unwanted fake Exchange Server.
1. Go back into Activesync's Menu, then Tap Options.
2. Highlight Exchange Server, then tap Delete. A warning message will appear about removing files etc, but as you have no files associated with the fake Exchange Server, it's nothing to worry about - just tap Ok.
Edit: Some people have reported that settings "stick" better if you Do Not delete the fake server just leave it, it does not actually do anything anyway - it was just a way to set active sync to manual operation not automatic. Item 3 below, if you leave it in place will therefore show two Sync Connections i.e. the real and the fake.
3. The list will now only show your remaining PC Sync connection(s). Obviously do not delete these!"
You should also:
A
ensure Active sync is turned off fully after use. Use the likes of Magic Button say or HTC X Button to do this.
B
consider using a scheduler to perform a soft reset automatically say before any alarms go off in the morning. This ensures unwanted programmes like active sync and others do not crash the system when the alarms go off or crash the device when you try to switch on. SKSchema or xbar would fit the bill for this.
C
Avoid leaving device on charge overnight.
D
Running only one or two Today Plugins and avoiding some apps that like to synchronise automatically with internet sources push mail / weather etc. (although with a good neat set up these can operate ok)
E
ensure any applications required on wake up are installed to Main memory (today plug ins, wallpapers etc), with all others installed to SD Card
F
Do not overfill main memory Hermes performs better with a good bit of spare space.
G
Do NOT let your device go to sleep by itself! Always use the on/off button to put it in sleep mode. In fact I would go further and suggest you go to:
Start>settings>system>power>advanced and remove the ticks in the two little boxes.
Just remember to use that on off button. Of course the device should be able to sleep by itself BUT this XDA does not perform well and often crashes if you let it sleep automatically.
H
Always use a task manager to close running applications. You can go into settings, running programmes to do this but it is far easier to have running programmes shown in your task bar and an easy way to fully close them. (That is what a task manager does).
I
Regularly clear out the PIE cache or better still move your Internet Cache to the SD Card. Use a Registry Editor (PHM Registry Editor http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/)
PocketIE Cache in storage card
Create these folders:
\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Temporary Internet Files\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Cookies\Storage Card\Pocket IE\HistoryAdd the following registry keys, string data type:
[HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Shell Folders]"Cache"="\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Temporary Internet Files""Cookies"="\Storage Card\Pocket IE\Cookies""History"="\Storage Card\Pocket IE\History"

In addition to the fake server trick, I also saw last night something about turning off "advanced network functionality" in Start>Settings>Connections>USB to PC.
I just unchecked it within the last 24 hours, but I'm hoping it will have a positive effect on this kind of problem.
Just to clear this up, this *trick* will also stop activesync from launching even when I'm not connected via USB. I notice through out the day I will close activesync 5 or 6 times (I use magic button) it seems to like to launch on it's own, I suspect this auto scheduling was the cause.
yeah it does work well... the only time active sync pops up is right after a soft-reset (it's not in startup folder so i don't know where it's being lanuched from) and when you plug it into the computer (which is fine). Other than that it stays close and the phone runs a lot faster and has more free RAM when active sync is not running. Again, another no-brainer performance fix the OS and Phone Mfg'rs completely missed!

Something wierd happened. I had to do a hard reset. Since it recovered from that, I cannot use DirectPush anymore. The ActiveSync choices no longer list "As items arrive" as a choice. It only lists the time choices and manual. How do I restore the "As items arrive" option?
After hard-reset the activesync connection wth your pc is erased. Erase all activesync connections both on PC and on device and reconnect them via usb and after "pairing" you will have back your options. Prior that deselect 'advanced network functionality' in connections>USBtoPC

There are one or two applications that you may run that can restart ASync, various mail apps, online time sync apps and yes plugging in the cable to do a manually state ASync. Once started AS contines to run at least until a soft reset or using your task manager, you shut it down again. So routinely after doing an AS it will need shutdown.
Whether you need to do another round of the Active Server Trick has been debated recently. It seems that for some folks if they follow up the procedure with the step that says to delete the Fake Server because its job is done; find later that doing this causes the wanted change to manual ASync not to stick.
As the fake server, if set up correctly, does not actually connect to anything, then those who wish may re run the trick. This time not deleting the fake server at the end.

I did the fake server trick, deleted the fake server, but didn't do a soft reset. I noticed that AS still loads on its own. I respecified the fake server but left it on this time. Hopefully it stays shut off...so annoying.

FIXED: ActiveSync Trouble - won't connect

Today my ActiveSync connection stopped working.
It tries to connect for a while then it comes up with "ActiveSync cannot connect to the Windows Mobile powered device. ..."
WM5torage works, so does pinging the Wizard.
Things I tried:
-Using the repair option from Active Sync setup
-Reverting the Wizard to a 3 day old backup made with SPB
Nothing worked :-(
What else (other than a hard reset) could I try?
See below for solution. And don't touch the notification queue if you don't know what you're doing
check if you firewall is blocking the activesync connection
if this is not the case ... good luck
try reinstalling activesync..
or get the latest one..
Install this cab application and select serial instead of RNDIS, just tap at YES button, and activesync will work perfect
Activesync gone mad
I am having the same problem with activesync not actually syncing my contacts and calender despite making all the noises I usually associate with a successful sync. My contacts are not updated and my calender has none of the appointments from outlook uploaded to it.
I have done a soft reset. a hard reset, gone back to activesync 4.2 and nothing works. I have also tried the usb switch that is mentioned elsewhere and no joy. I have other ppc's running PPC2003 and these are fine and update almost immediately, its only my xda mini s that is being a sod. I never had a problem before activesync 4 and several other machines before the mini s. I should also mention that my outlook files are fine and work on all other machines.
It is bad business that the world is becoming dependant on such bad software as this. It is not progress to make things worse and Mr Gates should be held to task for the problems caused from forcing us onto unreliable software in the name of progress. I was happy enough on activesync 3.8 and WM2003 and never had problems.
Please, Please someone give me an answer before hammer and xda meet in heated discussion.
I have the same problem with my MDA and both my PC and Laptop. I have been trying to resolve this problem for months. It is unbelievable that it is so hard to resolve this issue. I have been posting on this forum and on others and still am looking for a resolution. Maybe someday, someone will resolve this issue. Thanks for your postings and help in trying to resolve this issue. Frustrated beyond belief.
Sorry, this did not work either: Install this cab application and select serial instead of RNDIS, just tap at YES button, and activesync will work perfect
Update to previous
Just an update. I have tried this on another machine using the pst file from my machine and it syncs fine. Clearly, there is some problem on my machine with my software.
I have also removed outlook and reinstalled it. Also removed all profiles on main machine. At present, my calendar will sync but my contacts will not. Outlook tests say there is nothing wrong. Short of a complete software install I can not see another way to cure this other than the big hammer.
Go figure.
p.s.
If I had a hammer and Mr Gates was in front of me I would not be held responsible for my actions.
I found a corporate firewall that was preventing sync, I have to shut down the service and then it worked. Strangly, it would sync over bluetooth without stopping the service. A bit OT, but I can't seem to browse while synced. It asks for proxy info which I type in but it says bad user name/password. I KNOW I'm putting in the right proxy info (it defaulted it from my PC which browses fine) and correct user name/pw/domain. Any ideas?
FIXED
No firewall, no ActiveSync, no connection problems at all.
Fixed it by reverting my database to a backup.
When i had the well known alarm clock troubles i accidentially (= out of ignorance) deleted the whole notification queue.
Word of advice: Don't do that, it'll screw everything up

Still looking for some help on this.
check this solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=271174&highlight=activesync
Is this related to the inability to pass-through browse while on activesync? I am able to sync fine, but when I try to browse I get an error saying bad proxy info (which I've check 1000 times). Or sometimes when I'm messing around with the settings I get a "lost connection" message rather than the invalid login/password. So frustrating! Will switching to the serial type of connection help me?
ActiveSync must be one of the most frustrating applications out there. I have tried all recommended fixes and still cannot get ActiveSync to recognize my MDA. The last time I did a sync was 9/06. Too much BS using this application. I have searched all over the web and cannot find any application that will allow me to update my PIM file without ActiveSync. So, I guess I will finally give up on this. Thanks to all of you who have tried to help me. Thank You!!

Activesync not working suddenly

Hi,
Need some help. Computer does not detect the phone anymore when connected. When i tried to launch activesync on the phone itself, It will start and shutdown immediately.
This is the second time it happened... First time, called up the service centre they told me the only option is to do a hard reset. Which I did... I really dun wish to do that again.
Anyone encountered the same problem?
I had the same problem, after some searching I discovered that if you open up the active sync on your HD2 (tools folder), click on menu, then on option, at this point you have a list of all the items you can sync with your windows outlook. As odd as this seems unclick the "task" and/or "notes", reset your HD2 and try to sync. That was the problem with mine and hopefully it's the same with yours. Hand it over to M$ for yet another glitch in there OS.
Hope it works out.
nope.. i can't even launch activesync from my phone...
Well that is beyond my knowledge a this point, if you can't even access the activesync prompt from the phone even when it's not plugged in, then I think you might have bigger problem than just a glitch. May I suggest flashing the phone... only other option I can think of besides a hard reset; which you say you've already done. Have you tried using a different pc?
Had same problem, had to disable fast usb on phone!!
just try a soft reset? has happened a couple of times to me and the soft reset fixed it.
Mike
soft reset doesnt help... its not with the " enable faster data sync " also.. other computers does not activate active sync too..
Seems like the activesync software on the phone is busted... it will start halfway and terminate itself before the program is fully loaded.
I have the same problem. I had to change outlook profiles on my computer (different issue) and when I tried to sync them, error. So deleted the PC set up on both PCs, and active sync would hang. So tried to remove the PIM file (rename it actually) and now AS will flash briefly and disappear, won't start. Woudl LOVE if someone had an answer...
try creating a new windows account with administrator access that's what do it for me
OK, figured this out, and now that I did I remember going through something previously with my TYTN II just like this. If you need to (bad program exit, Outlook locked, etc) reboot your PC. Also soft reset your phone. Use some file explorer to go to your root directory and rename PIM.VOL to something else. DONT RESET, Pim will reconstitute somehow...
Delete your autosync profile on your PC.
Connect the USB
You will have to go through all the stuff of a new sync, but at least it gets things reconnected. And it beats a hard reset.
PS, as other mentioned, notes can be problematic, best if you can delete all pwi files in your phone\my docs and resync. If some HAVE to be kept, move them elsewhere and sync, then move them back.
