iPhone-like "picture" app? - Windows Mobile Development and Hacking General

So my AT&T 8525 died around Christmas. I wanted to get a Touch Cruise, but the overseas inflated prices are KILLING me. So for the time being, I've gotten a Blackjack II and I'm waiting for the next big thing.
Yesterday, I went to an Apple store and played with an iPhone for about 15 minutes. The coolest things about it, IMHO...
1) The picture functionality - While turning the phone and watching the pic switch too is nice, and sliding between pics is excellent, what I REALLY like is spreading your fingers to zoom! That's amazing!!! Do any Win programs have that functionality?!?!?!?
2) The weather - Having the city, then the extended forcast is nice. But what I didn't realize before is you can add multiple cities and scroll between them with your figure... just like you can flip screen on a Touch! That was just sweet!
3) Google maps on my Blackjack II is nice, but Google Maps on a touchscreen phone just rules. And it feels so smooth on the iPhone, it's like it was MADE for it. Damn...
And I assume the video is smoother on the iPhone, especially watching YouTube videos... but I must admit I didn't try that.
If anyone knows of an app that lets you look at pictures like an iPhone... I'd LOVE to upgrade my old Sprint 6700 to WM6 and then use that phone to play with images until my figure falls off.

This is a multitouch screen thing, and no I don't believe there are any WM devices out with multitouch.

Uh...the version on the iPhone was made for it. There's a version for WM too that works just the same.

try the s2v program... (slide to view)... almost like the iphone picture app... this program is nice and its free... thanx to A_C for developing another great app... kudos....

there are tons upon tons of new photo viewing apps for WM, ever since the iPhone's release.
1)
S2V (Slide2View)
HTC Camera Album
PocketCM ImageViewer
PictureFlow
PocketCM "Even Nicer Flow Stuff" (no actual name, since it's a test)
2)tons upon tons of applications for weather, and many are skinnable. so although you probably can't get the slide, you can get some really great looking skins for apps like WeatherPanel. There's PhatPhinger, iPhone themes (looks like the iPhone's. no sliding, though), etc etc
3)Google Maps? Really? It's been out for ages for Palm and Windows Mobile. Shockingly to many, even before the iPhone came out.
http://www.google.com/gmm/index.html
There's even a maps application from Microsoft, Live Search, that is actually more fully featured than Google Maps, whether it's on WM or the iPhone. Just ignore that it's from Microsoft, it's actually a great app.

Any links to this app? Did a search here, as well as on Yahoo, but no dice.

i think i know why. it's because you're using yahoo instead of google
only kidding, to each his own. however, with google,
"slide to view" yields the correct result 6th
"slide2view" yields the correct result for the entire first page
and "s2v", yields 4th, 7th, & 8th
i'll give the benefit of the doubt, though, because "slide to view" doesn't show up anywhere when searching with yahoo or the Xda Search. you need that "2" in there, lol.

I really like the .3 version of PocketCM ImageViewer (latest version doesn't run on my device).

WARNING IPHONE HATERS... (semi-clone on board)
Details here.. http://iwindowsmobile.com/vito-mobile-shell.html
Looks like its open season on hacking this now.
If I can only get it to somehow show calendar events on a page, its a hit.
Interesting. The only thing that stil pulls the I-phone ahead in this race is the speed at which it can use thier shell. I still love my PDA more though. Thanks for the link.
Hmmm...can't wait to see some skinning for this.
*update*
DL'd the cab from the website listed. It hasn't asked for an activation code yet...found activation screen, 14-day trial.
It is fairly easy to run, doesn't seem to take a lot of memory. Very similar to iPhone icon UI, not as 'fancy' looking.
looks boring
There is definite room for improvement...not too bad for a 1st version but it's typical of Vito software.
Contacts can be set up with their own icon and can be mixed in with application icons.
I would like to see something along the lines of SPB Mobile Shell though...i.e. Clock page, calendar. Then again, I suppose that will just fatten it up and cause some memory drain like SPB already does.
I'll try it...
I'll try it for a few days.Thanks.
Looks good but why always duplicate the iPhone interface, come up with something better. The new Diamond interface is like a breath of fresh air. It lets us know there are other options out there that is also good.
the most boring thing about vito apps is how cheap they all look. ugly, ugly, ugly.
looks too generic reminds me of samsung gui
something unique would have been more eye catching!

What was the warning for? Another dumb iPhone wan-a-be.
it's actually pretty nice... it just needs some graphical tweaks in my opinion...
Seems ok to me. Granted its similar to the iphone layout; however seems fairly simple and straightforward.
I like the semi black background without it being too black.
Everyone will have a view on this latest interface/gui. What we should remember is that there are people out ther doing an awful lot of development work to give us a better interface/more choice on the WM platform.
Constructive criticism and good points, e.g the request for skinning, is one thing. Simply lambasting the tool is not good enough.
Someone on here the other day was asking for ideas for a new UI for WM. Should we not seize on opportunities like this one presented to us?
Just my dollars worth.

I like the iPhone-like interface, and the customizeability. Aside from that, I agree that the overall apearance of SBP Mobile Shell is better.

I second WackyBanana.
It'd be great to have skinning sometime soon.
just my 2 cents worth, but iphone bashing is getting a bit droll, since we're all here on WM platforms anyways. You have to admit, Apple's UI's are pretty good, just really short on apps and customization.
So lets congratulate Vito and see if we can get some more customization options.
I would LOVE an option to turn off the Vito 'slide to unlock' option since I'm already using Slide2Unlock Pro 1.05...
like another person stated it looks boring! i wonder how well it will work? will it be speedy or sluggish?

That's just a task manager. There's a skinable one for WM whose name I can't remember right now, but it's been discussed on this forum recently. Since it's skinable, you can make it look however you wish.
but
I look at mobile reviw thats part of new sense for android
The new version of HTC Sense features several nice touches - a more detailed screen with contact's personal information and his activities, plus the new Sense's main attraction, new screen transition system.
I don't know how it's implemented on Windows Mobile phones yet, but on Android it works like this. What you are at the home screen, pressing the Home button calls the Screen menu allowing you to pick the one you need, which is pretty convenient, but there is one flaw to it. The phones that were featured at HTC's MWC booth made that window pop-up only when we pressed the button while staring at the Home screen. If we happened to be looking at Music, Weather or any other section of the phone, punching the Home key got us back to the Home Screen and that was it. I feel like this feature must work in any place around the UI, and I hope that it will.
from mobile review MWC2010. HTC
taskfacade
Android home screens are customizable and can only be switched one by one which is why the helicopter view might be more important. You can fly with the slider bar on WM Sense so it makes it less useful - plus it'll be difficult to get all our tabs in that Expose-esque view

But that's such a massive downgrade.
Lose 0.6" off your screen size, lose WinMo6.5.3 (which is better than Android imo), and lose your NA 3G coverage (assuming you're rocking a T9193).
I will say that at least HTC finally smartened up and started putting flashes in their phones. My buddy has an HTC Hero and the only complaint he has about it is no flash.
To be honest, I ordered one and will sell my HD2. I lose 0.6" screen size and one camera LED, but I gain Android.
Since I'm in Europe, I don't lose 3G.
I've used Android on an old Samsung phone for some time, and I discovered that I simply enjoy using it.
Despite that this phone is awfully slow and has a very small 3.2" screen, I find the experience to be much better than the one I have with my HD2.
Thus, I'm getting a Desire.
(I'd buy a Samsung Galaxy S with 4" screen, but I want at least one LED for the camera: http://www.engadget.com/2010/03/23/samsung-announces-galaxy-s-android-smartphone/)

Ugly apps

This is probably a bit of a stupid question with probably a very obvious answer. But why are all the apps for windows mobile all ugly?
We have HTC sense and that looks great why can't other apps keep the htc sense feel like from menus or anything instead of reverting to windows mobile style.
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Some people for example even love ginger children.
Many WinMo apps have been written to look the way they are so that they fitted in with a standard WinMo look and feel. Others were simply designed by talentless and tasteless folk (like Steve Jobs).
Believe it or not the apps have actually got better looking recently.
ETA: If you go to the link in my sig and check my recommended apps, you'll see that a lot of apps do look nice. Slacker, Bing, etc.
I think it should be compulsory to use the Sense SDK Look 'n' Feel now for every app developed for Windows Mobile
Partly because developers != designers.
At the same time, HTC Sense is but a few years old, while Windows Mobile and its associated 'ugly' interface have been around for 10. It's a bit unreasonable to expect all the applications to reflect the updated design of a single manufacturer.

It's because WM doesn't have a unified screen size, like the iPhone for example. So the apps/games have to be made in VGA, QVGA, WVGA to name three of many many others. So the games have to be made for each naitive screen size to actually look 'pretty', and the poorer looking apps on the HD2 are made for a screen size that isn't WVGA.
Speaking of ugly apps, is there a starter's guide or someplace to look for skinning stock applications (in particular, I'm interested in Outlook, as email's one of my top use cases, and the default skin looks awful)? I can code, but am at a loss as to where to even start. I did a search on the forums to no avail. To clarify, I'm not simply looking for skins, but am interested in creating my own for specific applications. Any pointers?
Most of the newer apps (< 1-2 years) do look good, and on every screen size, take G-Alarm, Resco Photo Manager, Opera 10, etc...
Most other blunt-looking apps are several years old, and date back from when visual design didn't have any consideration from developers, they were just using the default looks and controls rather than spending as much time and effort redesigning their own UI as needed to actually develop the application's functionality. Pocket Outlook is just the same as it was 5 years ago or even more...
But now pretty much everybody agrees that custom graphics is worth it...
This really is quite a naive question... if it was all about simple, smooth looking apps we would have bought an iPhone...
Having said that, what particular programs are you looking for? Most functions of a WinMo phone can now be utilised using programs with amazing UIs.
Browser: Opera Mobile 10/Mini 5
Email: You have sense... and even when you open an individual email (where it defaults to Outlook) we have pinch-to-zoom brilliance
SMS: You have sense...
Contacts/Phone: You have sense...
Photos/Videos: HTC, or try Resco Photo Manager
File explorer: Standard one is actually fine imo, but there's also the skinnable Resco, Total Commander, Throttle Explorer
Others: Google maps, Facebook, iGO8
There's a plethora of options out there.

[Q] GingerBread predictions ? ((just for fun))

What do you guys think will be some features of Ginger bread ?
Take 3 guesses...be specific not something like "UI tweak" and lets avoid the known ones (tv like shutdown,web2phone app install, market enhancement).
btw not a wish list..but things you actually think may happen.
1. Google Talk. Along with video calling I think theyll be making this a more prominent app and possibly allowing MMS style media sharing or integration with other com services (yahoo/skype).Perhaps using it as a portal to there GoogleMe service coming soon.
2. Browser. I think copy/paste will be refined skipping the menu buttons and having it initiated by long presses.
3. Browser. I also think theyll be 3Ding it up a bit. Giving tabs very Gallery like look.
i think there will be a very large focus on auto synchronization of music, videos, and images through the cloud (as hinted, goes along with the redesigned media player).
also im pretty sure they will add a competing "find my phone" feature since apple has gone ahead and integrated that into iOS 4.2.
bascially i think the new market web site will let your control every aspect of your phone from the web: images, music, contacts, wipe, applications, and phone finder.
also the browser will probably have a nicer tabbed browsing experience(managing multiple tabs right now sucks).

Thats two for tabs.
That actually would be fantastic. Does that integrate current functions or do you think it will be new methods.
((i.e for pictures will it just incorporate my current Picasa or will it be a seperate image section))
1. I believe that a lot of the core apps (phone, music, message, browser) will have a very 3D gallery like look. Most of the UI revamp rumors probably stem from this.
2. Most of the UI revamp will come from core app redesigns but as we've seen already, Android 2.3 now has a darker look. Expect a Google TV, Voice Command/Actions, Youtube App-like look. Lots of black/grey with bright, light-ish highlights. Also add in a lot of new transition and visual cue effects (Orientation flipping, end of lists, that CRT screen off effect, etc.).
3. Better multi-tasking / app switching, maybe WebOS good but differnet.
I'm sure Andy Rubin said something about Gingerbread having a focus on social communication and gaming. So expect there to be much better social integration in Gingerbread.
Didn't Schmidt say that Google Me won't be a standalone product but more of a social layer on existing Google products.

I wouldn't be so surprised at #1. Remember the IO developer conference? They already had a new 3D gallery like music app up and running on 2.2. You don't think they could have finished a couple of more between now and then? And that's if they hadn't already been partially done back then. I'm almost certain that #1 is a done deal for 2.3.
By end of list, I mean the bounce effect that other OS's like iOS have when you reach the end of a list. I just envision 2.3 having more superficial OS wide effects.
I thing there will be:
1. app to remove scraches
2. Hack iphone users
3. Nexus one front facing camera hack.

i would imagine it would be more of a one way sync of photos from the gallery to the desktop (doesn't picasa autosync already?), while music and video wold mostly go to the phone, maybe from a designated folder (drop box style) or some online interface (letting you access your things from a backed up storage of your phone from google's servers) pretty much doig iTunes job without the ****ty program or cables.
either way i got the feeling that they really wanted to create a simple way to connect your computer and phone through their cloud.

[Q] touchflo style picture widget

I would like to start off by saying that coming from winmo with the touch pro 2, i really hate how flooded the market is with crap. im so glad my disdain for apple kept me away from the iphone.
with that being said, the thing I loved the most about touchflo was the picture tab. it made taking good pictures rewarding because they were always on display essentially right on the homescreen. furthermore, the way you could scroll through all showcasing the great pics you've taken was great. it also only showed the pictures taken with the camera.
unfortunately the gallery app that comes with the phone is lame in comparison, and the widget only shows one picture. all of the market's Apps have been pretty bad...
does anyone know of any Apps that are similar to touchflo's picture tab?
if not, can this be moved to the app section so that someone who would be interested in creating one can see it?
thanks in advance for any input
nothing at all
I have no idea how touchflo works but have you tried this app below? I had it on my evo and it floats the images across the screen very nicely, people are very impressed when they see it.
