WARNING IPHONE HATERS... (semi-clone on board)
Details here.. http://iwindowsmobile.com/vito-mobile-shell.html
Looks like its open season on hacking this now.
If I can only get it to somehow show calendar events on a page, its a hit.
Interesting. The only thing that stil pulls the I-phone ahead in this race is the speed at which it can use thier shell. I still love my PDA more though. Thanks for the link.
Hmmm...can't wait to see some skinning for this.
*update*
DL'd the cab from the website listed. It hasn't asked for an activation code yet...found activation screen, 14-day trial.
It is fairly easy to run, doesn't seem to take a lot of memory. Very similar to iPhone icon UI, not as 'fancy' looking.
looks boring
There is definite room for improvement...not too bad for a 1st version but it's typical of Vito software.
Contacts can be set up with their own icon and can be mixed in with application icons.
I would like to see something along the lines of SPB Mobile Shell though...i.e. Clock page, calendar. Then again, I suppose that will just fatten it up and cause some memory drain like SPB already does.
I'll try it...
I'll try it for a few days.Thanks.
Looks good but why always duplicate the iPhone interface, come up with something better. The new Diamond interface is like a breath of fresh air. It lets us know there are other options out there that is also good.
the most boring thing about vito apps is how cheap they all look. ugly, ugly, ugly.
looks too generic reminds me of samsung gui
something unique would have been more eye catching!
Nice one
Cool feature, but why use it when I have this baby..

NM, I found this thread you were in...Is it WAD or WAD2 you're mostly using?

What was the warning for? Another dumb iPhone wan-a-be.
it's actually pretty nice... it just needs some graphical tweaks in my opinion...
Seems ok to me. Granted its similar to the iphone layout; however seems fairly simple and straightforward.
I like the semi black background without it being too black.
Everyone will have a view on this latest interface/gui. What we should remember is that there are people out ther doing an awful lot of development work to give us a better interface/more choice on the WM platform.
Constructive criticism and good points, e.g the request for skinning, is one thing. Simply lambasting the tool is not good enough.
Someone on here the other day was asking for ideas for a new UI for WM. Should we not seize on opportunities like this one presented to us?
Just my dollars worth.
WB
Winterface
I like the iPhone-like interface, and the customizeability. Aside from that, I agree that the overall apearance of SBP Mobile Shell is better.
amen! If I wanted an iPhone, I'd get a damned iPhone!!

I second WackyBanana.
It'd be great to have skinning sometime soon.
just my 2 cents worth, but iphone bashing is getting a bit droll, since we're all here on WM platforms anyways. You have to admit, Apple's UI's are pretty good, just really short on apps and customization.
So lets congratulate Vito and see if we can get some more customization options.
I would LOVE an option to turn off the Vito 'slide to unlock' option since I'm already using Slide2Unlock Pro 1.05...
like another person stated it looks boring! i wonder how well it will work? will it be speedy or sluggish?

hi everyone,
i mean, there are a few interesting themes out there, including iphone clones, wm7 leak concepts, etc... but: the only design i am really in love with is the design a_c uses in his apps. i simply love the greyish and minimalistic design of S2P and the options menu design of S2U. i love the small taskbar and i think though it is so small it seems very powerful to me as of functionality. i beg you, a_c, please hear my wish of an app that works like the ones you already made (an app that overlays the today-screen) that is so smooth, fast and simply amazing! i offer my help in developing the gfx needed for this project.
replies appreciated
hmm...if you have ever had a look at an iPhone you would know that all the A_C's work is based on iPhone's programs. S2P and S2U2 atleast, S2V not that much but still. So if A_C would make a theme I bet it would look a lot like iPhone themes we have seen already (iFonz etc)
well ok i know that, but:
i hate the iphones "desktop"...i hate those glassy icons which look like crap (to me).well i would think in the minimalistic way...like a bar at the top with a few tabs which drop down when u open them (like messaging-->new sms, new email, etc and multimedia-->audio, video, player etc)
i hate overloaded today screens and thats why i thought it would be so extremely cool if there was an application like that.
Have you had a look at PointUI? I think it could be something worth trying if you're looking for a minimalistic and nice looking UI to replace the today screen. www.pointui.com is the address. Have a look.
I know exactly what you mean! I've used alot themes and things like ultimate launch, WAD themes and spb mobile shell. But when i first opened the menu in customisation menu in S2U2 I always think "WOW"!! It has a sort of mac feel to it.
But I also dont like the crappy icons for the iphone themes either! I think a theme similar A_C's menus would be amazing!
Same here the S2U2 settings are very nice! I to would like to see an app request like this! All who are into this leave a feedback. Don't know what we're talking about? go get S2U2, from A_C. I feel this would be a cool addition to the whole iphone theme!

-widgets
-flexible engine (open development of widgets?)
-hardware accelaration support (will my mogul run faster?)
-facebook integrated into contacts!
-multiple home pages
-professional and lifestyle (huh?) layout
-kinetic scrolling
-fully customizable (themes supported?)
This can tide everyone over until 6.5! Way better than TouchFlo (IMO).
Amazing

Not if SPB hasn't really done away with the standard Today screen. One of the reasons I didn't switch over to 2.0 was the fact that the Mobile Shell home screen did not replace the today screen. I know there's an XDA hack for that functionality, but MS 3.0 should take lesson from PointUI and replace today completely.
this looks awesome.
their standard/default themes always sucked. and somehow 3.0 looks just like 2.0 just with a little tune up..hmm...after all this announcements im a little bit disappointed.
was it announced when this would be available?
Uffff I think i would use this for sure!!! need a release date...
I am a little dissapointed. When I heard about Facebook integration, for some reason I was thinking of the ability to use chat, change status, etc... instead it is just a way to get the profile photo to the contact in your address book. Bummer.
I agree. Not much better than the current version. Should've integrated a few apps would've made it more useful. new version of mobile shell might make current skin invalid too.
So this is basically the same, but a little "upgraded." By not changing the overall idea at all, the same reasons I dont use 2 will be the same reasons I dont use 3. I was expecting so much more with the hype. PointUI kills this. Kills. When will they learn, keep it simple, make it customizable. Oh well.
It looks ok but PointUI didn't do anything for me either so I'll stick with my TF3D till either is truely better.
Glad to see they're trying something new since TouchFLO pretty much made me stop using Mobile Shell as it did what I needed, and it came with my OS, rather than having to install something on top.

Since when is PointUI customizable? I have used it and there is not customization built into it.
Any idea on when the beta of SPB3 will be out?

JukEboXAuDiO, you seriously must be joking right! Pointui Home not customizable? Is being able to replace every graphic in the app, being the only UI with scripting support to allow you to build all sorts of applets and things, and being able to customize the background through the entire app not quite enough customization for you? Or are you referring to the old version released 12 mths ago?
I read that Palm makes a legal war against the palm pre theme, so to avoid copyright issues and waiting news to take off the skin

It looks fantastic. Great job. Are you going to make a VGA-Version?
I don't think it would be that complicated. The PalmPre's homescreen is basically a big TaskManager. We already have "similar" apps on Windows Mobile like that on the Xperia. Just make a homescreen plugin with a large task manager like interface with the same touch gestures as the Pre. The complicated part I would imagine would be the menu.
I like your skins, but it would be best as a simple homescreen plugin. Using WAD and the likes eats up memory and the way it overlays sucks.
I'm not a programmer but there are lots of open-source projects that, if combined, could provide roughly the same effect. I think someone with some know-how could come up with it pretty quick by reusing code that is already available out there.

Before starting this project I tried a lot but none of the programmers built an interface palm webos like for WM. There are iphone, android, and other but webos not so I decided to build it yourself.
I hope very much that any programmer to engage in this project and does a better job of mine!

Looking good. Here's my little take on it. Using a modded PointUi
Slightly off-topic tip: I suggest Omnia users should use PointUi 2.0.28e if they want their phone/clock to function poperly. Any other higher version causes the clock to stick and (possibly) corrupt the green button.

hopefully vga support soon

I just rooted my atrix last night with "gladroot". http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12540398
Before you root, install Motorola driver first. Nobody didn't mention about it until later and it took me for a while to troubleshoot. As long as you read and follow the instructions, it's not difficult.

I just made the same switch last week (3GS -> Atrix). Agree that MotoBlur sux and it's also been painful syncing contacts and calendar from my work's Outlook (going through Google isn't an option)
One reason I made the switch was for the less restrictive Android OS. However if you're on version 1.57, it looks like you have to take a few steps backwards to get ahead (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=12540398). Looks like I'll have to set aside some time to play...

Get adw launcher and use titanium backup to freeze blur. Fixes that problem right up. On the other hand, try running gingerblur which has a clean UI and runs quite smooth. It also removes a ton of other bloatware on the phone. Everything except adw launcher requires root of course.

Blur USED to suck, past tense. It doesn't suck too badly anymore. And I can't see why a new user would say it sucks when they have no experience. This is just a blind statement.
I'm very picky with my launchers and if I could tweak Blur to look better and purge a few things I don't use, it actually wouldn't be very bad at all. But I like that with the other launchers I can personally tweak them precisely to my preference.

BLUR sucks.
Exchange 2003 notifications are broken.
Unified Inbox doesn't include GMail. (that's a hurr durr right there)
Duplicate functionality of what already exists (Social Networking, Accounts, Corporate Sync)
I don't mind the homescreen/launcher.
My biggest complaint with blur is simply the lag when switching home screens and bringing up the full list of apps. And that you can't change anything on the dock. And the widgets are ugly. Oh wait...that's pretty much everything that blur does I hate...

I am saying it sucks because I am comparing it to my iphone. I can't express how much cleaner, simplier and user friendly the 3GS is compared to blur.
I certainly hope that other Android phones are not this bad.
If I can't find a better OS that works for me, I will simply get an iphone 4. I guess I was spoiled.

You mean the interface that is the exact same for everyone? The iPhone was made to be simpler. It's so everyone can use it. If you like being coddled by Apple, return the Atrix and get your i4.
It's up to you. WebOS is rising, WP7, BBOS (not as popular). Your pick, dude. Like I said, the iOS devices are made so that even a monkey could pick one up and work it like a pro.
If you're not going to take the time to tweak your device to your liking, go with iOS.

Have you ever tried TouchWiz? the iPhone wanna-be? Sense is decent, but Blur is one of the closest manufacture's skins to Vanilla Android.
Also, your opinion on Blur is your own. Many people love and use Blur, and many people do not. Just because you say it's the worst, does not make it so.
I advise you to try out all the other different interfaces, and tell me Blur is the complete and total worst you have ever tried.
What about the newer blur on the droid x?

Lol. It was obviously an opinion. I did not in any way said im representing the whole android community duh.
I have tried touchwiz, sense and the LG UI already. And of course i've also tried the original android stock UI.
I kinda want to know what people doesn't like on motoblur. The panels? You can empty all of them and end up with 7 panels on witch you can put whatever icons, shorcuts, widgets (and so on) you like. I'm coming from sense but I can customize the motoblur to look just as good. Don't feel like using launcher pro and already uninstalled regina 3D and adw. I woulg probably give a spb a try if they would have a trial.

I'm also coming from an iPhone, and here are some things I think are superior on the Atrix (and Android) to the iPhone (and iOS):
1. Non-intrusive notifications! I hated how on the iPhone, notifications pop up as dialogs that have to be closed. Sometimes you're doing something important, and you get a text message which pops up right in the middle of the screen. Irritating! I like how you can slide down the top bar when you want and it shows you your notifications.
2. Notification LED. It's great to be able to tell that you have messages or a missed call without having to turn on the screen.
3. Four hardware buttons instead of just one. After you've used the phone awhile, you'll realize how useful a back button and a menu button can be. You have to switch back to home less than you do with an iPhone. Also, hold down your home button and shortcuts to your last 8 used apps will appear.
4. Every application must advertise what features of your phone it has access to in the Manage Applications settings pages. So if an app can read and write to your contact data, it says so in the settings. On the iPhone, you have to rely on Apple to make sure all apps are doing what they're supposed to. Worse, if you get apps from Cydia, well then you're completely on your own.
5. You have 15 minutes to get a refund if you buy something from the Android Market. That's a pretty short time if you have to download a big application, but better that than no refunds at all.
6. Having the option to use an external micro-SD card is pretty nice.
7. Unlike the iPhone, the home screen and the app drawer are two separate things. It's nice to have widgets to customize your home screens.
8. For obvious reasons, Android versions of Google applications tend to have more features on Android than on the iPhone. For example, Maps has that cool 3D compass view, instead of the regular "up is North" top-down view. It also has a Street View add-on which is pretty neat and works quite well.
9. GPS seems faster and more precise on my Atrix than on my iPhone (and my friend's iPhone 4). I've heard others say the opposite with respect to the iPhone 4, so maybe it depends on where in the world you are.
10. For Bell users (ATT users have to pay I think?), Mobile wifi hotspot works great. I've tried tethering my Macbook Pro to the phone via wifi, and it works really well.
11. There's a basic data counter built in, which shows you how much data you're using, and by which apps.
12. There's a pretty decent Battery Manager built in, which shows very clearly what percentage of your used battery was used by each phone function, or application.
13. It comes with Swype as an alternate input system to the virtual keyboard, but you're free to install other 3rd party input methods if you like (there are quite a few).
Well, I don't know if I missed anything, but for the most part, these are the things that impressed me the most after using the Atrix for a couple weeks. I'm very happy I moved to the Atrix, but that's not to say that I hate the iPhone. I still like it, it has a very polished feel and the best screen in the business. And after all, it was the breakthrough smart phone when it first came out. There are just a few things that I think they really need to improve (notifications!).

I liked some of the features of Motoblur, like having the Manage Applications settings right in the menu of your homescreens. Very useful. Some of the widgets are nice too. My major complaint is that Motoblur is so choppy when scrolling around! That's unacceptable for a high-end phone, in my opinion.

Does any of you already have TSF Shell? I myself have it and it's probably the greatest launcher ever made. It doesn't lag at all, lots of functions. I was so surprised. It is available for 12.50$. It's definately a must have!
I was also really surprised how good it works on Desire HD.
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.tsf.shell
It is 17.00$/12.50€.
Not really worth it right now in my opinion.
Less fantastic than in the video, few things are missing.
Takes some getting used to since you can't swap between the home screens.
The lasso thing isn't really doing it for me since the 'gather' option isn't available.
Plus, once you have a nice arrangement of your apps and stuff, you better watch out not to accidentally lasso it and press arrange.
Also, re-sizing widgets doesn't work for me? Pretty annoying.
And the video had nicer looking icons but that doesn't really bother me.
they probably just hurried and released the launcher asap, and now just constantly update the launcher with all the missing bits, according to user experience
I wouldn't worry about missing functionality, that will be added quickly. I really like the concept, but it has some flaws in basic functionality - like changing home screens and lasso which is used only rarely until you setup the shell... also, no sounds when you press icons/folders... player widget displays SONGS individualy which is silly - it would be better to display artists or albums... etc etc... Pretty cool and smooth but basic functionality is missing... he better concentrate on basic functionality than on eye-candy....

Did you made it your self ore what?
Just not that grate.. more funktionality before i use it as daily drive...
The launcher is just missing a few features.
What I'm missing most is just a Settings function.
I mean, the lasso is awesome if you're setting up your 4 screens but after that it's annoying.
There should be a mode where lasso is disabled and you can swipe through the home screens.
Also, when I lasso like 15 apps and select Arrange or something, it jumbles them all up in an order I don't like.
It's great that you can turn apps and put them anywhere you like, but for some screens I prefer if they're all neatly lined out, which is a pain to do by hand because it enlarges the icon when you hold it a few seconds.
Kinda sucks, but that's just my opinion though.
