Hey all, Just updated my sig to show my current setup. Got myself a used MDA for free. Lil fix me up. Couple scratches, no stylus and so but was a 1.08 version =D So after reading up the guides here. I got to unlocking the cid and mda itself fine. Did the upgrade after I did the secure stuff to try out that XDA Mobile 6 R3 http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=324632
Im wondering which one is better tho... Kinda confused when it comes to that.. just know WM6 is the way to go and least I have the above installed and working. =D
So just learning all I can here. I saw something about Kitchen and I am guessing its like a custom build or so with things I want?
Anyways thought I would say hi and if someone knows a better WM6 I should go after. Ill look at it. Just so much to take in at once atm. Was used to playing with my Zodiac Palm. Heh.
All the chef's here are great, so the rom you want is truly dependant upon what you like. I run NTS's Jaguar 3.1...for me it is fast enough, really stable and comes with only a a small amount of stuff, so that I can customize it the way I like. Some roms have all the bells and whistles, some have pretty much OS only. As for a kitchen...before you attempt to cook your own rom, I would strongly urge you to READ READ READ all the tut's and stickies and wiki, learn as much as you can about your device first before doing any major customizing. Think of it like dating...you want to find out as much as you can about the other person, really get to know the other person and that person's quirks, before committing to a long-term relationship...or you can get sloppy drunk, jump in the sack and wake up the next morning going...what the hell did I just do!!! Your choice.
**edit**
BTW, Welcome to xda!!
Well here is my experiance. I mod and work with Symbian 60 phones as my primary. Write the guides on how to stream live TV or MP3 to the cell phone via winamp or real audio.
I have modded and flash/flexed Motorola phones, have experiance in unlocking Nokia and Motorola GSM phones. Not to mention tweaking.
So I am a sage when it comes to STUDY 1st. Its annoying.. but yea I do it.
(Oh yea, I also am with www.pspupdates.com so I mod PSPs too hehe)
So I studied enough here to least get my MDA sim/cid unlocked for modding. Thats safe. So far I went with that XDA Mobile 6 R3, I am not sure but it seemed stable enough to start with. I have not updated the IPL yet, but I prob will in a few, Rapid share sucks with its delay, no?
Well as for kitchen.. I figure its ALOT of data to take in at once. Abit too much... I understand its a make your own with what you want.. My issue isnt that.. my problem is.. WHAT do it I want??
I mean I have alot of experiance with my Zodiac II palm.. which is another for the homebrew community and tricks for working it... mean getting it to use my cell phone to connect was fun. (Still gotta with the PPC)
So my issue is trying to get to know the PPC OS. I played with it on my old bosses Ipaq 3135? (The T-Mobile PPC that failed)
But I did some interesting things with that too.
I know Ill 100% want VNC, Divx (Is there the web plugin for it yet to use stage6.com or so? What about Youtube REAL version?)
Not to mention easy to do emulators. =p
I just dont know fully what I want or what I SHOULD be after with this thing. I know I need to do some reg hacks to tweak.. but then im stummped.. if I am using custom mod versions... are these tweaks built in?? Would I mess something up? (You get my worries)
Another thing I noticed after I installed this version is VoIP... my wonder is.. I never used that before. I DO know I can flash my Linksys WRT54G with the DD-WRT voip firmware instead of the standard ddwrt build I am using now. Question is... is it worth it? If so, whats the deal? Use Skype?
As you can see alone from the questions above... Its just a scratch of questions and areas I am looking at and trying to get answers on... so yea.. kinda hard to know when to "stop" and say "IM HAPPY" with what I installed lol. Just need to know what I should go after... =/
Hello all,
i've scoured this webpage for the past few days to try and make some sense of this phone!
i've just upgraded to the HD2 after nearly 2 years of iphone and finding the transition very hard!
i did read the "Questions & Answers" section but the obvious questions weren't there...probably as they're obvious and it's just me...
i know some of you will take offense from me asking questions, and if you do, please don't reply i'm after help, not a laugh
Why is the phone refered to as Leo? Is this the actual model of the phone rather than the HD2?
Why would you upgrade your ROM? What can these upgrades do?
The current ROM on my phone shows as 1.43.206.4 (70315) WWE and on the HTC website it shows as there is an available upgrade but upon entering my serial number it says this isnt applicable!
A few other things the facebook app doesnt work? Just stays on "Getting User ID.." and doesnt go past that and the Messenger application doesnt allow (or doesnt seem to) none hotmail or msn addresses!? for example, my email address is from a domain i own that is already set up on .passport and works fine on msn through the PC but not on the phone?!
Any help would much be appreciated and thanks in advance

Hi mate, and welcome to the forum. I hope we can help your transition from your iPhone to a windows phone easier for you - they're very different beasts aren't they?
First off, the name Leo is the "codename" for the HD2. The original HD was called the "Blackstone" as well. We refer to it as the HD2, as that's what it's really called, but you can call it Leo if you like. I call mine Gemma, but that's a different story
The ROM is basically the core of the phone's software. Upgrading this is usually done to make a lot of small changes happen at once, rather than installing lots of niggly little hotfixes. ROMs are made available for different phone types at different times. By this, I mean that the ones currently on the HTC site are for unbranded phones. They may later include ROM upgrades from service providers. If your phone is T-Mobile, for example, then you can only use T-Mobile ROMs. (That's the official line, anyway. There is something called HSPL which allows you to put any ROM on your phone, regardless).
As far as your problems with Facebook and Windows Live go, I can't really comment as they've worked flawlessly for me. I do have a hotmail.com account though, which may well explain why Live worked so easily for me.
I'm sure others will come by to say hello and, hopefully, answer your questions some more.
If you've got any questions, do search first, and don't give up just because you haven't found results in the first 5 posts listed. This is a MASSIVE forum, and stuff does get lost easily. After that, ask away, and just ignore anyone (like me) who tells you to search first. Just tell us you already have in the original post and we won't have a leg to stand on
Good luck mate - I hope you enjoy it
I use googlemail and Live worked for me too with no problems....
Have you played with any of the settings on the phone since you got it?
Have you tried turning it off then back on? Maybe that will fix it.
spot on! cleared the majority of things up for me there!
yeah, they certainly are totally different phones! the iphone feels and looks dated after using the "leo" . The camera is the thing that stands out for me by far, i'm used to using dslr's and after getting the iphone, having to carry a normal compact due to the camera being so sh*t! hopefully i'll be able to get away with using just the phone!
my contract is with O2 and after speaking with their technical department about the little issues i have, i must say, they do not have a clue! the first person hadn't even heard of the phone!
i'll have a look into upgrading the ROM as the version i have seems to be quite out of date compared to the ones available now!
thanks again for the help, much appreciated!
hi pkchips,
i've deleted it and reinstalled it, but still not working - its been sat next to me for the past 20mins saying "Getting User ID.." but for some reason i can sync my contacts with phonebook from my address book but not log on to the application....strange!?

You're welcome mate.
I'd definitely recommend the ROM upgrade as 1.66 is really smooth and fast compared to 1.43 and 1.48, despite them being fast anyway! Just make sure to spend some time reading the stickied threads in the ROM forum. They've got all the information you need from noob to expert in there, so it's highly recommended reading before you do any flashing.
As far as the camera goes, there's a lot of differing opinions about that on here. Personally, I think it's great, but I don't expect to take shots that are as good as something like a DSLR. There's been some really good example and some really bad ones. I guess it's a taste thing, and how you take pics too, so good luck with that
Welcome,

Id say this means you have a provider locked phone, Eg/ O2, TMobile, whatever. These phones are expected to be updated by the provider, so the serial wont work on the HTC website.
Sadly our providers tend to blow, so don't expect any updates all that quickly, however a little trick called HSPL will get around that. (Bit like jailbreaking an iphone, only different)
EDIT - scratch teh T Mobile stuff, since yr on O2!
i think the ability to control the focus from a tap of the finger is what does it for me
i'll do some more research now i've got a weekend in my favour and see how i get on!
ta
Re: camera...cover 3 quaters of the led flash with some electrical tape and it'll be fine...well it'll be slightly less blinding lol
harrow!
i've HSPL and updated my rom, everything seems sweeter and working fine, BUT , once i've taken a picture, the thumbnail in the gallary is ridiculously distorted and appears purple/pink! when i click the picture its absolutely fine though!
i've given up gun! its going back and i'm getting a 3gs!
i didnt want to go back to the iphone after my 3g as the 3gs isnt a big enough of a step up but the HD2 is slow, the keyboard is no where near as good as the iphone, the user interface of the iphone is much neater and simpler and i dont have to mess around with this rom radio hspl flash upgrade shizzle - i just plug my phone in, press a button and its jail broken
thanks for the help guys, just not too sure what you see in the phone besides the nice camera!
sorry, that sounded a bit rude!
i appreciated the help when i asked, many thanks - just a shame it didnt live up to my expectations after the raving reviews i read!
I apologize for the post I know this information is around and believe me I have spent weeks searching and reading around before troubling you, However before I go and drop almost $600 on a phone I was hoping to just double check and get some verification that this should work.
I currently have a AT&T Tilt (aka the Kaiser) and have had it for a few years now. I very much would like to get my hands on a Hero.
Based on everything I have read both here and else where I should be able to take the existing sim card from my Tilt pop it into this phone and be good to go
http://www.negrielectronics.com/hero-usnam-unlocked-black-p-3037.html
Its the HTC Hero US/NAM 3G version that a few sites have been offering. From what I understand it is likely from Canada, I guess that Rogers wireless uses the same bands as AT&T for 3G ? (850/1900 if i recall).
Have we heard of anyone doing this successfully?
Any issues I should know about?
General issues with the phone? (I haven't really heard anything and as I said i've been googlin my butt off for weeks)
My general use other than a phone of course.
GPS - use it on my tilt all the time
Music - Currently have a Motorola Bluetooth FM transmitter, as well as a pair of Motorola bluetooth headphones
Web access, the tilt is great as a phone but the OS is just to clunky, I would rather wait till I get home or to the office most of the time to google something then use any of the browsers I have tried.
Pictures now and then, love having a camera in my phone to take some snaps of friends but the Tilts is horrible as we all know.
Any incite you can provide would be greatly appreciated
Thank you

Looks to be the right model, at least according to the website. It's actually from Telus, which also uses the same 3G bands.

Works great on AT&T, haven't noticed any connectivity issues. As a matter of fact, I actually get better signal with this phone than I did with my old phone (an LG Vu). Also you should have full access to the Market, so no worries about not being able to download apps.

None specific to the North American version or using it with AT&T. Sense UI can be a big laggy at times, but there's plenty of solutions in this forum for that. Other than that, I personally have no complaints. Look through this forum for other people's thoughts. In general, though, most people's experience has been pretty positive and I think the majority of people in this forum would say it's a great device. (again, just my opinion based on following this forum)

The music app is not the most advanced, but it gets the job done, and I don't mind it. The bonus is that if you don't like it, you can replace it.

Browser's pretty good for a stock browser. Includes pinch-to-zoom and basic flash integration (a rarity on a phone). I like it. There's also alternatives for download in the Market, such as Dolphin, which is another great browser.

It's still a cell phone camera, albeit with a bigger sensor. I may be biased as a semi-professional photographer though. For a phone, it takes pretty good pictures, and the 5 megapixels is convenient, as you can usually actually see details in your pictures!

Overall, I'm very happy with my phone. I've had it since around Thanksgiving, and it's worked great. If you're buying it already unlocked, that simplifies things even further.
The one thing you'll have to do to get data and MMS working, though, is enter the proper APN settings so your phone knows how to get online. These come already on phones from AT&T, but not if you buy it elsewhere. They're easy enough to find by searching either this forum or Google for AT&T APN.
Hope you enjoy your Hero!
Thank you, Thank you, and Thank you! for all the info
Sounds like its a great phone, any of the minor issues seem to be things that are already 100x worse on my Tilt anyhow so it wont bother me any.
GOODBYE windows mobile!
Once I get the phone in I'll be sure to post the results for others reference.
I am a former Tilt user converted to the Telus Hero on AT&T and love every minute of it!.
It routinely takes ~5min to get a GPS signal, and sometimes it never happens at all. This severely affects the usefulness of GPS for me.

It pinpoints me perfect to within a couple of feet, but by complaining & adding a poll could pi$$ people off who are working hard on developing android to work on our hd². You've got to consider that less than 2 months ago it wasn't even a thought that it would work on our phones never mind a stable version. I haven't booted into windows for days considering that i would have to soft reset quite often with it. So i say each day is bringing android closer to a full build.

Whats with peoples complaints. What do you accomplish by asking these questions.
Its just like If your parents buy you a brand new dell laptop. You then proceed to complain about the color.
They didnt have to buy you jack crap but instead they took what hard earned money they made while working and bought you this computer.
I'm just saying
Maybe you're just not standing in a good area?
Mine seems to lock on fine. Maybe not instantly like it used to with QuickGPS on WinMO but certainly within a minute or so. I wouldn't go back to WinMo because of it put it that way.
I've been a happy daily user of Android ever since it first became available. Just keeps getting better.
Wow, talk about a smack in the face. Are you satisfied with GPS?
Are you kidding me? Satisfaction at this point in the game is almost irrelevant. You didnt buy the HD2 with Android running on it, did you forget that? Do you know what ALPHA's and BETA's are? Do you know that you dont even have to run Android at all? Go back to winmo or sell your phone and buy a real Android phone. Until things are out of BETA or the not working stage...even then, I am not sure you have grounds to complain about work that SOMEONE else has done and GIVEN to YOU free of charge hoping to make YOUR experienced on YOUR phone BETTER.
Learn to develop and fix the issues yourself if your unhappy with the current state of things otherwise put your bottle back in your mouth and stop whining.
I managed to get a gps fix indoors by a window in well under 5 minutes. This fix was also not aided by data networks as those were disabled purposely for this test. Overall the gps works at least as well on android as it did on windows. I am using IGO Motonav because it utilizes the 480x800 resolution.
Maybe you can try enabling location services via data networks to get a fix sooner.
I used the GPS a few times.
What I noticed is that sometimes it takes too much time to initialize.
I believe it fails somehow but doesn't give a message that says so
So I just close and re-launch Navigation.
Sometimes 2 or 3 times and it usually works at that point.
Everytime I used the GPS I have been amazed by how accurate it is.
Imagine that 2 months ago I had a crappy cell phone and I've never used a GPS before so everything my HD2 can do I think is cool now LOL
give this guy a break..
I had the problem myself. His goal was maybe to receive information from other users who ARE satisfied, E.G. setups that DO WORK.
I can't get GPS to work properly, it shows the GPS icon but the road I'm getting is like 30 km's next to where I am.
Though, it works on some builds, I once had a build that worked almost flawless but can't remember which.. The build I'm using now doesn't work for a meter.
Imho, I'm not complaining, I just use winmo for GPS. But please, don't attack every new post. Maybe the op can change the title to 'Working GPS builds'/somthing like that..

yes, that's a fact, but there is no need to exaggerate 11calcal.
I think everyone here has respect for the devs, it's not like he actually ment to insult anyone with his post. Only answer if it's related to the OP's question.
Admittedly, the question was worded poorly. Rest assured it was in no way meant to be a complaint to the devs (who I have donated to).
I posted a poll because it is the only thing that is really problematic for myself but seems to be regarded as working fine by everyone.
I think that in this whole endeavor its important to not cloud development, testing and user-feedback with flame wars, so I apologize if mine came across that way unintentionally. Text via the interwebs is a poor medium when it comes to emotions, don't you think?
And to clarify, once triangulated the GPS is accurate as ever, its just the time it takes to triangulate thats bad. It takes seconds in WinMo for me.

ok it was worded in a manner that sounded ungrateful. All i was stating is as its still developing things will become better through builds/zimages etc, it wasn't meant as a flame. As i said mine is quite good so we'll leave things said in the past.
Sorry for jumping to conclusions, and honestly its not my work to defend so I suppose I was just as wrong.
You need to edit the gps config file in system /etc to your local sever it will then find signal as quickly as winmo. There is a thread somewhere I think its called quick gps or something like that with further details. Basically you need to unmount the system and edit the file, making sure it stays, (CHMOD 777) I think its defaults to US.pool.org.
My only wish is that it didn't drain battery so fast I need to use a charger now, and no TomTom, but I have not used winmo since.
moving on then and sticking with the original question...
I think a fair amount depends on which particular sat nav program you're trying to use...I've so far loaded Co-Pilot,Navigon,N-Drive and Sygic McGuider and the time to first fix, purely using GPS and not AGPS, varies depending on which I choose to use (obviously environmental factors will influence this as well). If your particular program isn't upto scratch, either try another one of find one that someone with a similar set up recommends. (and NO...I haven't got time to run a series of tests and publish best first fix results ) You also need to bear in mind that while another type of sat nav may have a better ttff, it might not work in a manner you like or have features you feel you need! My only complaint is aimed at TomTom for not releasing an Android version of their software yet
p.s. Please don't ask me for info on getting GPS software..Nearly been banned for that before

Q&A - name of the forum... Should I pretend that I don't have problems just to please developers? That's insane...
Hey guys,
Sorry for this "noob"ish post. I am new to the Fascinate after being with T-Mo for 2 years, which included a G1 (running CyanMod) and a Nexus One (which also ran CyanMod). I am just hoping one of you would mind giving me a quick 2 minute catch up on where things are now with the Fascinate, as there is way too much on these forums to realistically sift through. I have some basic questions...
1)I have noticed root is good and all that. I would assume rooting is all you need to get free wireless tethering? What program do you use to wireless tether once you are rooted?
2)I keep seeing something about "lagfix". What is that? My phone doesn't seem laggy, except for all the bloatware Verizon has put on it. So any info is appreciated.
3)I'm not crazy about the stock 2.1 ROM. Are there any good custom 2.2 ROMs yet? What is generally the best ROM for the Fascinate? On the Nexus, argue as much as you want, CyanMod was far and away the best ROM. But it seems like there is no CyanMod for Fascinates. So what are my best choices?
4)Is there anything else I should know moving to this phone?
I really appreciate anyone taking the time to answer these, as I know these types of threads are not the most popular thing on here. I want to get "in the know" with my new phone, but there is already so much on these forums, it's hard to tell what is still new and relevant and what is not. Thanks guys!

1) Wireless tethering is accomplished by myself without issue via Wireless tether app on the market. It's under the radar so to speak, but required an ad hoc connection
2) The correct lagfix is the voodoo lag fix, with the informative posts being found on the first page of this forum. Basically, Samsung used an older file system in their build, and voodoo updates it to ext4, which is alot snappier on the r/w side of things. Without it, you will encounter a slowing of your processes after a period of uptime, and usually a small freeze while the phone does things like install applications. The flip is that voodoo instructions should be read very closely, and adhered to. Failure to do so will result in phone borkage, and while always fixable, takes some time and patience to do so.
If you are unfamiliar with Odin, as I was at first, make damn sure you always use the PDA option. Failure to do so can result in terminal frustration, and possibly a close to true brick of the device.
3) There are no 2.2 ROMs yet. The Froyo OTA should hit between now and Christmas hopefully. I would like to think we will see some custom 2.2 ROMs, and maybe a CM port by the 1st. In the meanwhile there are several ROMs on this board which seem to work for the people who use them. I'm a proponent of stripping and customizing stock to suit your needs, making your ROM your own. I haven't seen enough included hacks in the available ROMs to warrant a need for them personally. We have some excellent kernels available, and some pretty slick themes and mods, which works well for me.
4) The phone has the best processor/gpu out currently. The display is fantastic, and I don't see a better device on the market currently. It does have downsides, most notably the GPS, which isn't a huge issue for me, but which also has a fix on the way, presumably to be included in the 2.2 update. I also have experienced a shortage in the Wifi reception comparative to my N1, having approx. half the range I previously enjoyed. This seems to me to be software related, so I assume it will be addressable.
If you plan to root and mod, especially if you plan to use voodoo, which I highly recommend, be careful in your reading of instructions and applications of procedures outlined in them. As great as this phone is, mistakes are costly in terms of confusion and time to correct.
Thanks for the reply. Im always impatient, and as such, have already rooted before even waiting for a first response I used the one click method though and it worked great, exactly as advertised. Root Explorer works, so I definitely am good there, and I snagged the latest build of wireless tether from the developer's page.
Now I need to get started with actually switching out the ROM. I really want all the VZ bloatware gone and Bing needs to go as well. So now I guess I have some reading to do on installing ROMs for this phone. Process seems a little more complex for this phone that it was for my N1, but that may be just because it was so long ago and I don't remember. Thanks for the response though!
I am in a similar boat I use the Droid 1 and my fascinate is at the post office waiting for me per usps tracking
I think for now I will root remove bloatware and Bing and role with that till 2.2 maybe touchwiz aswell as I hear u can save ram that way and I paid for launcher pro so might aswell use it.
Yea, from what I've read, it sounds like putting a new ROM on is kind of pointless, since it won't be 2.2 anyway. So I think I just need some good instructions for this voodoo/lagfix stuff and some good instructions for removing all the vzn bloatware that comes installed. Once I do those two things, I think I'll be good. I am already running ADW, which I love, so I don't need any customization there, and wireless tether seems great. So I guess I just need to continue searching. There are lots of topics on the voodoo/lagfix thing on here, but I just want to make sure I find the most complete comprehensive set so I dont screw anything up
I'm somewhat of a new member, but have silently read through these forums for months... I used Dirks d02 sv1200kernal and the voodoo lag fix, I have been very happy with my phone since. I have been reading about the roms right now and don't see a point just yet. Freeze the bloatware from verizon and you will love your phone. Also have switched to LPPlus and think my phone operates so smooth!
I just received my fascinate friday, best buy sucked me in, lol, and I have no regrets. This phone is amazing, better than my d1 and d2. I too had a lot of the same questions about the lagfix and what not and would just like to say thanks, this thread def helped me understand. Can't wait until 2.2 roms

I posted on replacing the stock launcher with ADW or LP, as well as a couple lists of what is safe to remove. It's easy enough. I'm mobile our I would link the threads, but the replacement of bing its also covered in a post that includes some zips that will help.

What is LPPlus? Is it worthwhile/simple to do?
To everyone else, I am glad I was not the only other one on the fence. XDA can be a bit scary sometimes, because you don't wanna ask something dumb/"noob"ish, but at the same time, if you haven't been there since the beginning, playing catch up can be hard. I will say everyone in the Fascinate threads has been nice and really helpful so far. I am slowly working through getting my phone the way I want it. Its just a shame that Verizon has to mess up the phone with all this garbage. I dont care much for the iPhone (design or software), but the one thing they do right, which comes at the cost of being "closed", is that they can dictate the user experience right out of the box. Unfortunately a lot of people are just too timid or incapable of doing the things we do to our phones to get them "right". Its a shame too, because people base their opinions on what Android the phone company gives you rather than what it can truly be. Regardless, I appreciate everyone's help and look forward to being a part of this community. I work IT at a school, so I know my way around a PC, but I wish I just knew more about Android coding and how phones work to be a true contributor to ROMs, etc. At least I know I helped a few people by speaking up and creating this thread. Thanks again everyone!!!
Edit: Im putting this in as an edit, but I just realized that LPPlus is probably Launcher Pro Plus. Have you used ADW? Is there a difference? What do you see as its advantages over ADW?
I personally (and i think most of us here would agree) don't have a problem with anyone asking "dumb" questions, if they haven't already been answered. the main issue is that most of the new posts are either "I didn't read the instructions and F*ed up my phone", "hey i heard this crazy rumor it must be true", "Can someone explain the same thing there are already 6 other topics about" and "how can we take X from this other phone and use it on mine". your questions are understandable and asking questions before you jump in saves a lot of headaches from having to fix something you tried without understanding it. and honestly, no need to be afraid to ask anything, worst case scenario someone like me *****es at you over the internet. who cares. =)
