[Q] Is GPS working for you? (time to get signal) - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

It routinely takes ~5min to get a GPS signal, and sometimes it never happens at all. This severely affects the usefulness of GPS for me.

It pinpoints me perfect to within a couple of feet, but by complaining & adding a poll could pi$$ people off who are working hard on developing android to work on our hd². You've got to consider that less than 2 months ago it wasn't even a thought that it would work on our phones never mind a stable version. I haven't booted into windows for days considering that i would have to soft reset quite often with it. So i say each day is bringing android closer to a full build.

Whats with peoples complaints. What do you accomplish by asking these questions.
Its just like If your parents buy you a brand new dell laptop. You then proceed to complain about the color.
They didnt have to buy you jack crap but instead they took what hard earned money they made while working and bought you this computer.
I'm just saying

Maybe you're just not standing in a good area?
Mine seems to lock on fine. Maybe not instantly like it used to with QuickGPS on WinMO but certainly within a minute or so. I wouldn't go back to WinMo because of it put it that way.
I've been a happy daily user of Android ever since it first became available. Just keeps getting better.

Wow, talk about a smack in the face. Are you satisfied with GPS?
Are you kidding me? Satisfaction at this point in the game is almost irrelevant. You didnt buy the HD2 with Android running on it, did you forget that? Do you know what ALPHA's and BETA's are? Do you know that you dont even have to run Android at all? Go back to winmo or sell your phone and buy a real Android phone. Until things are out of BETA or the not working stage...even then, I am not sure you have grounds to complain about work that SOMEONE else has done and GIVEN to YOU free of charge hoping to make YOUR experienced on YOUR phone BETTER.
Learn to develop and fix the issues yourself if your unhappy with the current state of things otherwise put your bottle back in your mouth and stop whining.

I managed to get a gps fix indoors by a window in well under 5 minutes. This fix was also not aided by data networks as those were disabled purposely for this test. Overall the gps works at least as well on android as it did on windows. I am using IGO Motonav because it utilizes the 480x800 resolution.
Maybe you can try enabling location services via data networks to get a fix sooner.

I used the GPS a few times.
What I noticed is that sometimes it takes too much time to initialize.
I believe it fails somehow but doesn't give a message that says so
So I just close and re-launch Navigation.
Sometimes 2 or 3 times and it usually works at that point.
Everytime I used the GPS I have been amazed by how accurate it is.
Imagine that 2 months ago I had a crappy cell phone and I've never used a GPS before so everything my HD2 can do I think is cool now LOL

give this guy a break..
I had the problem myself. His goal was maybe to receive information from other users who ARE satisfied, E.G. setups that DO WORK.
I can't get GPS to work properly, it shows the GPS icon but the road I'm getting is like 30 km's next to where I am.
Though, it works on some builds, I once had a build that worked almost flawless but can't remember which.. The build I'm using now doesn't work for a meter.
Imho, I'm not complaining, I just use winmo for GPS. But please, don't attack every new post. Maybe the op can change the title to 'Working GPS builds'/somthing like that..

Thank God someone else with the same outlook as myself, you cannot expect everything to work but IMO most is considering its fairly new & not native to this phone.

yes, that's a fact, but there is no need to exaggerate 11calcal.
I think everyone here has respect for the devs, it's not like he actually ment to insult anyone with his post. Only answer if it's related to the OP's question.

Admittedly, the question was worded poorly. Rest assured it was in no way meant to be a complaint to the devs (who I have donated to).
I posted a poll because it is the only thing that is really problematic for myself but seems to be regarded as working fine by everyone.
I think that in this whole endeavor its important to not cloud development, testing and user-feedback with flame wars, so I apologize if mine came across that way unintentionally. Text via the interwebs is a poor medium when it comes to emotions, don't you think?
And to clarify, once triangulated the GPS is accurate as ever, its just the time it takes to triangulate thats bad. It takes seconds in WinMo for me.

ok it was worded in a manner that sounded ungrateful. All i was stating is as its still developing things will become better through builds/zimages etc, it wasn't meant as a flame. As i said mine is quite good so we'll leave things said in the past.

Sorry for jumping to conclusions, and honestly its not my work to defend so I suppose I was just as wrong.

You need to edit the gps config file in system /etc to your local sever it will then find signal as quickly as winmo. There is a thread somewhere I think its called quick gps or something like that with further details. Basically you need to unmount the system and edit the file, making sure it stays, (CHMOD 777) I think its defaults to US.pool.org.
My only wish is that it didn't drain battery so fast I need to use a charger now, and no TomTom, but I have not used winmo since.

moving on then and sticking with the original question...
I think a fair amount depends on which particular sat nav program you're trying to use...I've so far loaded Co-Pilot,Navigon,N-Drive and Sygic McGuider and the time to first fix, purely using GPS and not AGPS, varies depending on which I choose to use (obviously environmental factors will influence this as well). If your particular program isn't upto scratch, either try another one of find one that someone with a similar set up recommends. (and NO...I haven't got time to run a series of tests and publish best first fix results ) You also need to bear in mind that while another type of sat nav may have a better ttff, it might not work in a manner you like or have features you feel you need! My only complaint is aimed at TomTom for not releasing an Android version of their software yet
p.s. Please don't ask me for info on getting GPS software..Nearly been banned for that before

Stay FAR away from Vibrant/Captivate or any other Galaxy S variant

For those thinking about getting the Vibrant/Captivate or pretty much any variant of the Galaxy S DO NOT.
I contacted them via FB and this is the only answer they sent me
"We are working on it. We're sorry about this issue. Please be patient as we know how important this is. Thanks for reaching out!"
I have just received and activated my phone with dum, dum, dum... AT&T and this phone has nothing but GPS issues while I have to admit everything else works fine and is definitely fast.
There is absolutely no way of it accurately doing a turn by turn Navigation with Google Maps.
Ive even resorted to doing a supposed fix and nothing if anything it made the major problem worse.
Same has been reported with the T-Mobile version of the phone.
I highly regret leaving T-Mobile now because the reception was a lot better with them as well.
No wonder tons of people bad mouth AT&T, LOL.
Proof below, stick to the other manufacturers guys... Samsung is testing the waters and these phones should have NEVER been released prior to having it 100% functional.

Why didnt you wait for g2?
Hey OP!
Have you EVER tried the Vibrant or Captivate? I have the Vibrant and I have had no problems with the GPS. I use the turn by turn directions daily!
You need to know what you are talking about! Yes, there is a documented problem, but that doesn't mean that the GPS is unusable, and NO I haven't applied the GPS fix.

The G2 would definitely be a better option.
Thinking Im going to jump to the Sony X10, I hear that they are going to have the CyanogenMod on it pretty soon.

You're trying to come at me like everyone is going to have a working unit Barnes.
Just because YOU got lucky doesn't mean anyone else that buys it will.
There is already a "fix" in the works for units that have faulty GPS but whether it works or if its actually able to fix the issue is another story.
Read this and please don't post again if YOU don't know what you are talking about.

Maybe you are also confused, bring up an address and press the option that says navigation.
See that big blue area around your position THAT is not true GPS and it is only guessing where you are from cell towers.
Like others have said it will not accurately tell you where you are, you can not trust the voice directions at all.
That is faulty and yes Samsung, AT&T, T-Mobile and any other service provider should not be selling these units until it is fixed.

That Little blue arrow that tells me EXACTLY where I am on the map as I'm zooming down the freeway and accurately tells me every exit as I'm passing them? I know what I am talking about! And the turn by turn instructions work for me and it re-routes when I miss a street.
OK!!!! You all! You know EVERYTHING and I know NOTHING!
That is all! Sorry for putting in my 2 cents!
By the way, I've been on Android since the G1 in November of 2008. Rooted with the first Jesus Freke roms thru Haykuru and Dudes roms to Cyan and have been doing the same with my Vibrant.

buy whatever you want
ive gone thru so many phones since 09, from the g1(when it first came out), hd2, n900, x10 and finally the vibrant. the hd2, n900 and x10 in a matter of 4 months. didnt like windows mobile from being used to android. n900 wasnt what i expected it to be. loved the x10 but only running 1.6. i didnt root it because I eventually bought the vibrant.
only issues i had were facebook syncing and contacts being tripled and gps in searching for a location while in house, but GPS worked FINE when I was on the road. wish i had a car dock for it at the time but will eventually get one.
OP, if you knew of these reasons, such as lag or because of the gps not working properly, then why did you buy it in the first place? i dont think barnes was getting at you, but damn dude, someone's sensitive. no one told you to buy it despite some of the imperfections the phone has. its like people saying sony shouldnt have released the x10 with 1.6 but rather have froyo but they still buy it. and if your response is to root it to get 2.1 or 2.2, i dont think the avg. customer for phones would have any idea of what you are talking about.
you cant please everyone on here. alot of people on xda either want to be a mod or just bump stupid posts because they didnt get an answer within 3 hours.
Returned my Samsung Captivate and is officially back to the HTC Dream/G1 until further notice.
Feeling better already, I can always get that phone when and if the GPS issue is worked out.
That was pretty much the only flaw it has at least on the phone I returned.

In that respect I did mess up.
Was expecting the Captivate to rock my socks off but all it did was make me mad due to the GPS issue.
I didn't know of these problems until after my phone arrived.
Its stupid for Samsung to not get those fixes out asap as that is their flagship phone.
I heard the X10 is very close to getting Cyanogen on there.. definitely a major advantage there vs. the Samsung development that's going on
if cyanogen is working on the x10, then the x10 will have alot of potential.
did you switch back to tmobile since you're back to using the g1?
btw, how often were you using the gps on the road? give the vibrant a chance, im sure the kinks will be worked out.

The X10 does seem like a better choice for now mainly in part to the CyanogenMod potential.
Im still on AT&T, Ive closed my account with T-Mobile.
I was using the gps on a regular basis thats why it had to be refunded as a replacement was more than likely to have the same issue.
Samsung has always had a bad track record with updating thier phones and I didnt want to be stuck waiting for an update that may take too long to be relevant.
I've just gotta jump in with my $.02 right quick here...
Not trying to piss anyone off, but damn you all cry too much! IT's A PHONE!
And on top of all that, it has an Operating System on it! So essentially, it's a COMPUTER! And what do computers have????? ISSUES!
So, quit *****ing. Flagship phone or not...It's going to have issues. It's a new device. Duh. haha
Basically, when it comes down to it, if a device were PERFECT in every standard, then EVERYONE would have one. And sense there is no such thing as PERFECT, good luck.

legend, so you're using the g1 on at&t's network?
the captivate is using bing, correct? there's no google maps on there? maybe that was the problem.
i guess im fortunate to have my gps on point when i'm driving, but once i eventually root, etc, then maybe the gps will lock in almost my exact point, and not off 1 or 2 blocks.

AT&T network, Yes I am.
The captivate is using Google Maps but has the option in using AT&T's version of it and they both were not working.
I tested how many GPS satellites it picked up through the LBSTestMode menu and it got me no where even if there were 1 or 7 available.
Once rooted it was the same story unfortunately even with all these workarounds on xda and other sites.
Further proof that the Samsung GPS issues continue....

Swapping my SGS with a new one.

So I've got one of the many Vibrants with the flaky GPS, and none of the fixes out there seem to improve the problem. My local T-Mo store is understanding and quite willing to swap it with a new one since I'm still within the 14 day policy. The only catch is I want to put the phone as close to stock as possible before I do the trade so they can't say it was something I did to it. Right now I've rooted deodexed, and I've got clockwork ROM manager going. I've also deleted almost all the stock cruft and swapped the calendar / camera apps. Because I was so eager to make it "mine", I also failed to make any backups BUT my wife happens to have a totally stock SGS from which I can scavange from but I'd like to do it without having to root it or anything. Is this possible? If not would thread 739091 ("True Stock 2.1 firmware for vibrant"; sorry I can't post links since my account here is still new) get me there?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475&highlight=stock is what you're looking for. Just flash this with Odin and you'll be fully unrooted.
Awesome, I really appreciate that. I'm not timid when it comes to making the phone my own (I was an early adopter of CyanogenMod for my old G1) but I just returned from a deployment and the whole 'scene' has changed a lot more than I expected lol.
Hehe. you might want to give the new T-Mobile Vibrant firmware that was leaked, it fixes the GPS problem (result may vary). Returning your SGS for a new one isn't going to fix your problem. It's not hardware related, its firmware.
An exchange won't fix your GPS issues anyway so you mine as well keep the one you have. Trust me, we try to swap them out customers all the time at my store.... It's a known issue and Samsung is SUPPOSED to be sending us an OTA soon

Hmmm, quite a few people I'd talked with locally that have the vibrant said swapping worked for them. Is it possible that newer firmware has been released for phones with a newer "birth" date than mine? Then again who should I trust more, people who hardly utilize their phones, or the people who drool over the prospect of new mods and hacks? hehe. I guess I'll just call T-Mo back and let them know I wont be bothering with a swap after all.

Hey, my pleasure. If nothing else, I have the Army to thank for bringing me out to Hawai'i and giving me the chance to meet my now wife hehe.
ALL out of the box Vibrant's have the same firmware. You need to update to the newest firmware version, it works really well. GPS is better than it is on my CLIQ.
I dunno, i've heard reports of GPS working perfect out of the box for some, and the new firmware doesn't seem to do much for my GPS,
10m accuracy at most unless I leave gps on for about an hour and maybe i'll get 6-7m accuracy, but driving, it SKIPS, (still at 10m) instead of gliding along like my G1 did.
So i'm considering perhaps swapping mine.

10M of accuracy is not bad and if you want to get technical, GMaps interprets the data differently. What shows in GMaps as 10 meters will show up as 7 under GPS test. I've got my Vibrant here at 6 Meters under GPSTest and 10 under GMaps. Get a grip people.

I wont speak for Qwerty, but in my case I was LUCKY to get 10m accuracy; usually the best I could get was 40m; usually after 5-10 minutes of 'searching' and when you're driving an unfamiliar city such as Washington DC Like I was this past week, 40m is far too inaccurate for navigation. Your 'get a grip' is completely tasteless and uncalled for in this thread.
That said, I took zephiK's advice and just flashed the new 2.1 (thread 780935), and I must say its a lot better. I can get a 10m fix indoors in less than 5 seconds from a cold start (EG without GMaps knowing where I am at all); before being indoors I would never get less than a 1000m 'fix'. As soon as I get mine fully tweaked, I'll be sure to flash my wifes phone as well since she's got the same issue.

Yeah, i'm still considering doing the swap, sometime this week, perhaps even today, got up this morning, and phone was off, (Charging Battery Symbol on the screen),
I'm not running any of the custom roms nor am i OCing. Just worried if I do the swap I may end up with even more problems. I don't know what it is with the Samsung phones, if perhaps a lot of the phones have hardware problems or what. I have only used the original stock rom, and the leaked samsung rom.
I don't mean to be picky with my phone, but I remember my 2 year old G1 getting easily 3m lock as soon as i open up the maps inside my room, and navigating with it, was extremely accurate as well. I also never had restart issues with the phone, till after dropping the thing really hard, and then even the restart thing went away.
Today, I'm lucky to get even 40m lock again, on that same leaked updated firmware. My gripe with the samsung vibrant is that there seems to be some sort of hardware problem with the phone and samsung is not saying a thing about it.
I'm telling you guys... don't bother with a swap... I work in a very high volume store and have seen almost every customer come back with GPS issues. We won't even swap them anymore for customers because TMO has listed it as a known issue, and Samsung has announced the firmware update soon... A swap WILL NOT fix the issue, but if you decide to swap it, don't go whining to us our TMO about how you "keep exchanging it and none of them work..." They know this, and YOU know it.

Problem Solved. Running CM7 Build 40 (or later).
Do you have a condensed version of this post?
PS. My name is HondaCop and I approve this message.
Sounds like you've experienced a mix of software, firmware, and hardware issues and blamed them all on the ROM.
I use Fresh and can do everything that I read (didn't read the entire wall though, you may want to put in some Cliff notes for the lazy.)
I also run launcher pro.
So make one yourself, nothings stopping you, all the pieces and knowledge are free. Your post on here doesn't really serve a purpose.
Tried Calk's EViO 2, Myn's RLS5, Azrael X 2.1-3.1 over the 1st 3 months after I rooted, all had their various issues. Been on Vaelpak for over a month, love it! Dev is quick to respond to problems, even when they're caused by something in my setup. Currently on v 3.1 RC1 (update 2), v3.2 is right around the corner. Gets better every day!
Swyped on my VaelPak'd Supersonic EVO 4G...
It sounds like you want a rom that does what you want and the good news is...you can get it by making it yourself.
Expecting the devs to make something specifically to your tastes especially when most of it is done free of charge is a bit much to be asking.
If you can't make the rom you like on your own then you had better get cracking at fixing the rom with most of your wants working. You said so yourself you are too lazy to fix even a simple font issue yet you want the devs to make all your "i wants" possible. You should at least put in the effort to try to fix the little stuff (font for example) on your own before expecting the devs to do everything for you.

This is in no way a report on disatisfaction from efforts from chefs. They are all sharing there time and effort typically on something they want for themselves.
But it seems you have to give up something to get something else.
I'm hoping someone can shed some light on my issues. Like use ROM X but apply this fix or patch.
I know everybody has different criteria for a "Working ROM" some may feel it's critical that Music plays over bluetooth with the phone going half asleep. Another user may want it to look like an iPhone etc.
But I don't need much (IMHO) but I just can't seem to get there.
Keep in mind I could easily live with most of these ROMs. But when you see something working right on one ROM but want it on another you keep hoping you can find a ROM that does everything the way you want or you can make it do so.
What I say I need may be incomplete because some things I take for granted. Like the phone needs to work, LED's for pending messages need to work etc.
1) ASOP Contacts. Why? So I can Click on Navigate to Address with that contact open. If anyone knows how to make HTC Sense Contacts do this I'd love to know. It can only go to stupid Google Maps.
2) Voice and Google Search to Include Contacts (ideally near the top of the list). I think I may have found a reason why it varies. If you shut off "Search As I Type" it behaves much more the way I prefer and Contacts will come right to the top and if you hit search it will then do a google search.
3) BlueTooth. All I use is simple headset that has worked on TP2 and 5 phones before that. It randomly disconnects after a Voice Search. Then leaves Voice Search prompt stuck on screen. Many (All?) sense based ROMs do this. But CM7 ROMs do not.
3a) Bluetooth Volume Resetting. Some ROM's it gets stuck at a low volume. That I can increase each time but it keeps reverting.
4) Solid 100% GPS. All Sense based ROMs work great. CM7 based ones are crap.
5) Battery as good as Stock or better.
6) ESPT (is a very nice to have but not critical).
7) Don't care about 4G or Eye Candy. But I don't want it to be an Eye sore either.
8) As a poor mans confirmation on Voice Search. I noticed on some Rom if you just say Call Fred Smith (WITHOUT saying on mobile) it will prompt Fred Smith on Mobile or Home. This is great !! So at least you know you got the right person. Then you say Mobile (which it rarely gets wrong). It makes the call. This doesn't work on all ROM's.
9) Good support thread. Some ROMs have very little interaction with chef to help get answers and plugs for some things you'd like to see. Some have very good Chef support but and pounded with stupid chatter and you'd have to live in the thread full time to keep up. It's seems the better support a Chef does pulls in more folks that just want to chat about anything.
10) If Click Send Message from a Contact that could actually FILL the To: Phone Number. A lot of ROM's this doesn't work on. Some depend on a Cache that you have an ongoing thread.
I have not tried alternate kernels with Sense Based ROM's perhaps that would solve some bluetooth issues.
CM7 Build 38 looked promising at first glance. But it fell on its face with GPS. Yes I did all the silly tricks. It always finds location and locks quick. But it just refuses to update while navigating. Will occasionally get an update.
NonSense ROM was very close and I may end up going back to it and perhaps with different Kernels because it suffered from Bluetooth issues. Might be time to upgrade BT headset. It's worked so well for so long I hate to give it up.
These are all stock #15 Kernel with lastest Radio and PRL.
Myn - Over themed (Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder I guess) poor contrasts on Fonts. Yes fixable. But I'm too lazy.
NonSense - Bluetooth is really only issue. Battery about same as Stock.
CM7 BLD 38 - Missed calls GPS will lock but not update.
VP3.70 - This really looks quite good but I just didn't have the time to learn which freaken updates to apply. He leans on theming which is low priority for me.
Rainfreak - Not actually installed, he says he addressed bluetooth issues. But he removed EPST and some other critical Sense based things. Might be easy to put back. But he abandoned support
OMJ - I misspoke in other threads this is a pretty nice stock based ROM and I like his thinking. Fine tune the stock stuff. Currently running. Several of the issues listed above (3,3a, 8).
Sprintlovers - Too close to stock, why bother.
Calkulin - Had stability issues with 1.7.7 (even with undervolt removed). 1.8 seems to have fixed that but still has some of my common issues with Sense Based ROM's with none of the pluses of the Hybrid Sense/ASOP ROMs.
MiekFroyo - Too many ROM's I forget what issues I had but I'm sure in the list above.

I don't think his ROM would solve many of my issues any way. If I see a ROM "Over themed" then tend to have different priorities. And I don't want to spend time customizing it. I want one that starts close. Also if the doesn't see this a serious flaw then I suspect I would see other flaws.
Again, nothing against different chefs. Different strokes for different folks.

I may just go to Vaelpak again (Definitely high on the list). I might just wait for V3.2. His updates are bit confusing. If they are primarily to fix "theme" issues I don't care. Again he has a high priority on Themes. That's fine, lot's folks love that stuff. I don't care about themes.
If VaelPak did some refinements on bluetooth (like Rainfreak said he did). Then it would be high on the list to try again. He spends lot of time on high resolution DPI stuff on themes. Just extra band with I need to sift through. But other threads say it's the Kernel that matters regarding bluetooth. That's not clear.

Also sense based Contacts is one of my major issues.
My favorite ROMs are the Hybrids that have some ASOP Gingerbread components that IMHO do it a little better even though not as Eye Candy-ish in some cases.

Lot of people with broken hardware then because I've seen many of the issues posted by other folks. In fact co-worked has rooted Droid II and he has some very similar issues. Only hardware that may have issues is my headset. But it worked perfect on TP2.
Part of the problems are Froyo 2.2 and some stupid limitation in Google Apps. Which is why I like Hybrid ROMs that have some Gingerbread 2.3 compoents that address some issues.
Full Gingerbread 2.3 ROMs are not ready for prime time yet (for me). I look forward to an official release.

I might, I used Calkulins Kitchen for TP2 and stuck with the same ROM for 7 or so months. But it did take months of F'in around with it to know what works well with what.
Trying to avoid that time sink. By the time I get it "right" Gingerbread 2.3 will probably be out and solve many issues.

Well I was kinda under the stupid assumption when I bought the EVO Android worked !!
Now I have to build my own ROM. Geesh.
Again I don't think my list is too demanding. Some issues are pet-peivish, I admit.
Stock battery life is fine with me.
CM7 battery is looking respectable. But the phone fell flat on it's face before it could make it through one battery cycle to really know. When EVERYONE says GPS works I may give CM7 another go. By then my guess is a leaked GingerBread 2.3 will be out.

How did the phone fall flat on its face? GPS issues?
Basically what you're doing is you're "customering" the developers. You're wanting to take the best pieces of all of them and automagically jam pack them into one ROM completely tailored to your needs. The only way this is going to happen is if you dive in and start helping or you build your own ROM. This post would have served much better purposes had you asked if anyone knows of a ROM that does all of these functions instead of going out and slamming each ROM for what it doesn't have. Each dev is going to take their own work their own way and that's the end of the story. If you don't like it, you have a few options, do your own work or quit your *****ing. There are a lot of things that I would LOVE to see in CM but until I bust out my coding chops or start adding to the development table, there's not much I can really do except thank him for his work, donate, and be happy that there are a ton of people out there donating their time to making this **** better.
I've been having the same problem. Calkulin's is the closest I have come

Possible new GPS fix

Ok I hope I dont get flamed for this but it worked for me maybe it will for others. I just got my GPS working after getting off the phone with Tmobile support. I had it working on eclair and it stopped after froyo. I kind of hinted to them as to what I needed done and they did it! Now I know exactly what to ask for if this ever happens again. BTW Tmobile is the best hope we dont lose them to ATT.
Ok so whoever performed the gps script that is out there, the gps restore app or anything else on pretty much any rom and didnt get it to work can try calling Tmobile and asking them to restart your network connection. You will have to use a phone other than the vibrant. They will ask you to do a battery pull while the phone is on, they will do something on their end then ask you to turn your phone back on. When it turns back on the GPS should work, It did for me. If it doesnt work please dont flame me, it was worth a shot. If it helped then your welcome!
Thanks, any info for better performance is welcomed in my book!
ROM: Trigger v2.8.2
Kernel: Overstock v2.2
GPS: S.gps2
Modem: Stock KA7
Launcher: Launcher Pro Plus v0.8.3 w/ Clear LP Widget Mod
MODS: Horizontal Accurate Battery for Trigger v1.0
Theme: Solid Black
Quad Score: 2040
GPS Accuracy: 15-20 Feet
Battery Life: 27 Hours
There are great fixes out there for GPS adding this is just another worth a shot.

The reason I thought to share this was because like many people on many threads I noticed that the fixed didnt work and many dont want to open their phones and perform the hardware fix. But with this simple method maybe I can save a few people from prying open their phones and causing havoc. But it worked for me, now I get good gps reception, enough to use to get places with.
I've had great success with bionix v and the gingerbread gps fix. Stock bionix v will have gps loosing signal every few minutes. With the gingerbread gps fix, there are less locked birds but they have much higher snr and I don't loose signal. Using waze now with those mods I don't jump around the map like I did with stock bionix v
On this rom im running, i get a lock in less than a second and a stunning accuracy.

I've never been able to speak to anyone at Tmo who would halfway even understand me trying to explain to them the technique you just used. Not to say it wouldn't work but I don't think most of their reps would be capable of doing what you are suggesting even if they were 'able' to do it! Last guy I dealt with was a complete joke, kept putting me on hold and then would come back and say something like he was talking to someone else! I swear he was talking to 3 different people at once, putting people on hold, and not being able to remember who was on what line! Nightmare. Ugh. But hey, if you got a couple hours to waste trying and it works for ya then by all means go right ahead!

Actually you tell them your gps doesnt work and that it did before the froyo update. When it didnt work on eclair tell them that they had you pull the battery while the phone was on and then they sent something to your phone or reset the network. Idk who you talk to but I did this yesterday and it took less than a half hour. Worse comes to worst you get the android "experts" to do it.

Actually my GPS NEVER worked until i spent an hour on the phone *****ing and another hour on live chat until they swapped my phone with what i believe is a brand new one and now the GPS works perfectly! It's definitely a hardware problem. People do the hardware fix, it works, I swapped mine for a new one, it works. I didn't feel like popping my phone open and I'm no good with a soldering gun so why should I have to do the hardware fix myself?
My GPS works respectably well, maybe it just depends on manufacturing date.

Why is everyone obsessed with GPS?

I've had my Vibrant for over a year now and maybe turned my GPS on twice. Here's a hint, turn GPS off and just use wireless networks. It's extremely accurate all the time. It's consistently more accurate than my gf's blackberry with GPS on and just as accurate as my friends droid with GPS on. I always use Google maps and latitude as well so I'm always looking at my location. It's always right where I am.
Even apps the use GPS pick up where I am right away. The only reason I can think of you might need GPS is if you're driving in a new place and you don't know your way around and you wanna use turn by turn navigation. Hell even then, I just use google maps....turn by turn is annoying anyway.
So that's it. I had to say this cause everyone is obsessed with GPS whenever a new ROM drops........that's the first question people ask. Does GPS work??? I've never used GPS and I've never been at a disadvantage.....plus it saves battery life.
XDA answer:
Awesome that you do not use/understand the full functionality of your phone. Thanks for the post. Have a good one.
My Answer:
I actually travel and need turn by turn, nor do I find it annoying.
to each his own. if the phone has GPS capabilities, why not use it. i mean, it is a feature that is factored into the price of the device....so if youre going to pay for something, you might as well get everything out of it that you are paying for.
it may not be important to you, but thats you. everyone has different needs/wants for their smartphone. some people are OCD, and prefer to have everything working properly, even if they dont use it often/never use it.
i myself dont use gps often at all, but i occasionally need it while driving somewhere. so i cant really say its important to me...but i sure as hell feel more comfortable knowing its there when i do need it.
this is a major reason why i am still running froyo. gingerbread is not yet stable enough for MY liking. that doesnt mean im going to trash people who use gingerbread, because what they do with their phone is none of my business, nor does it affect my life in any way.
i know where youre coming from though. it does get annoying when the majority of members all start *****ing about the same thing. but hey, if the phone was perfect and there wasnt anything to ***** about or improve, then there would be no reason for this forum

Absolutely...I understand all your points. My whole point was Cellular triangulation is so good these days, you don't need GPS. Except of course for driving purposes sometimes. I was just trying to challenge people in not worrying about the GPS and check cellular networks instead....I guarantee they won't lose a thing. I think data connection and wifi strength and are much more important but GPS gets so much damn attention.
because people want what they can't have. with the vibrant, someone may not even use gps, but still ***** about it not working, just because they know it doesn't.
though, for the record, on cm7 i am getting the best accuracy with gps i have ever got with the vibrant: 3m.

its not about people wanting what they cant have....its about people wanting their phone to work the way it should. the *****ing may be excessive, but there is nothing wrong with what they are *****ing about. people pay a lot of money for their phones, and they have every right to want to work perfectly, not well, perfectly.
HOWEVER, with that said, the lack of gps is the result of a conscious choice that they made to flash a gingerbread rom that they knew, or should have known, has either semi-functioning or non-functioning gps.
bottom line: what difference does it make
I only turn my GPS on when I need it
Google Navigation
Camera Alert
Not sure why else you will need it. Its also a battery killer.

Often. I need it for driving often. That's why.
When you get your driver's license, you'll see how handy a solid GPS signal is.
( Just kidding s666!)
I don't use it...meh. To those that need it, good luck.

You're right on the fact that most of us don't use "turn by turn" everyday. Hell if I know I need directions before I leave my house I go ahead and print them out (old school by now). The fact of the matter is that Navigation is something I want working when I do use it. My family and I drove to Cali about 2 weeks ago for vacation and it was nice that when we spontaneously decided to go someplace (while we were in the car driving) my wife would just input the address in the Navigation and it would take us there with no issues. I probably used the Navigation function those 4 days more than I would use it in the remainder of the year but I was glad that it worked flawlessly thanx to my current ROM (BionixV 1.3.1).
Bottom line??? NO, its not about being obsessed with having a working GPS. It's about having a working GPS when the need arises no matter how infrequently that is.
haha "when you get a drivers license"

i use my garmin but still before i had it i would rely on my phone gps when i needed it even though it was not very often
I use gps to track my running and biking using CardioTrainer and mytracks. That said, d the improvements of cm7 are worth the flakey gps. If it was easier to nandroid between froyo and cm7 I would go back and forth.

I do a lot of cycling and use my GPS to track my stats and locations while riding.

I've had my Vibrant for over a year now and maybe turned my GPS on twice. Here's a hint, turn GPS off and just use wireless networks. It's extremely accurate all the time. .

Here is a question for you... What do you do if you are not connected to a Wifi?
Riddle me that!!!
Cheers!!!
Well written and very insightful. Never shall I use GPS again.
Our 3G network did not cover all areas, so need off-line maps and GPS-assisted navigation
