Possible new GPS fix - Vibrant General

Ok I hope I dont get flamed for this but it worked for me maybe it will for others. I just got my GPS working after getting off the phone with Tmobile support. I had it working on eclair and it stopped after froyo. I kind of hinted to them as to what I needed done and they did it! Now I know exactly what to ask for if this ever happens again. BTW Tmobile is the best hope we dont lose them to ATT.
Ok so whoever performed the gps script that is out there, the gps restore app or anything else on pretty much any rom and didnt get it to work can try calling Tmobile and asking them to restart your network connection. You will have to use a phone other than the vibrant. They will ask you to do a battery pull while the phone is on, they will do something on their end then ask you to turn your phone back on. When it turns back on the GPS should work, It did for me. If it doesnt work please dont flame me, it was worth a shot. If it helped then your welcome!

Thanks, any info for better performance is welcomed in my book!
ROM: Trigger v2.8.2
Kernel: Overstock v2.2
GPS: S.gps2

There are great fixes out there for GPS adding this is just another worth a shot.

The reason I thought to share this was because like many people on many threads I noticed that the fixed didnt work and many dont want to open their phones and perform the hardware fix. But with this simple method maybe I can save a few people from prying open their phones and causing havoc. But it worked for me, now I get good gps reception, enough to use to get places with.

I've had great success with bionix v and the gingerbread gps fix. Stock bionix v will have gps loosing signal every few minutes. With the gingerbread gps fix, there are less locked birds but they have much higher snr and I don't loose signal. Using waze now with those mods I don't jump around the map like I did with stock bionix v

On this rom im running, i get a lock in less than a second and a stunning accuracy.

I've never been able to speak to anyone at Tmo who would halfway even understand me trying to explain to them the technique you just used. Not to say it wouldn't work but I don't think most of their reps would be capable of doing what you are suggesting even if they were 'able' to do it! Last guy I dealt with was a complete joke, kept putting me on hold and then would come back and say something like he was talking to someone else! I swear he was talking to 3 different people at once, putting people on hold, and not being able to remember who was on what line! Nightmare. Ugh. But hey, if you got a couple hours to waste trying and it works for ya then by all means go right ahead!

Actually you tell them your gps doesnt work and that it did before the froyo update. When it didnt work on eclair tell them that they had you pull the battery while the phone was on and then they sent something to your phone or reset the network. Idk who you talk to but I did this yesterday and it took less than a half hour. Worse comes to worst you get the android "experts" to do it.

Actually my GPS NEVER worked until i spent an hour on the phone *****ing and another hour on live chat until they swapped my phone with what i believe is a brand new one and now the GPS works perfectly! It's definitely a hardware problem. People do the hardware fix, it works, I swapped mine for a new one, it works. I didn't feel like popping my phone open and I'm no good with a soldering gun so why should I have to do the hardware fix myself?

My GPS works respectably well, maybe it just depends on manufacturing date.

It routinely takes ~5min to get a GPS signal, and sometimes it never happens at all. This severely affects the usefulness of GPS for me.

It pinpoints me perfect to within a couple of feet, but by complaining & adding a poll could pi$$ people off who are working hard on developing android to work on our hd². You've got to consider that less than 2 months ago it wasn't even a thought that it would work on our phones never mind a stable version. I haven't booted into windows for days considering that i would have to soft reset quite often with it. So i say each day is bringing android closer to a full build.

Whats with peoples complaints. What do you accomplish by asking these questions.
Its just like If your parents buy you a brand new dell laptop. You then proceed to complain about the color.
They didnt have to buy you jack crap but instead they took what hard earned money they made while working and bought you this computer.
I'm just saying
Maybe you're just not standing in a good area?
Mine seems to lock on fine. Maybe not instantly like it used to with QuickGPS on WinMO but certainly within a minute or so. I wouldn't go back to WinMo because of it put it that way.
I've been a happy daily user of Android ever since it first became available. Just keeps getting better.
Wow, talk about a smack in the face. Are you satisfied with GPS?
Are you kidding me? Satisfaction at this point in the game is almost irrelevant. You didnt buy the HD2 with Android running on it, did you forget that? Do you know what ALPHA's and BETA's are? Do you know that you dont even have to run Android at all? Go back to winmo or sell your phone and buy a real Android phone. Until things are out of BETA or the not working stage...even then, I am not sure you have grounds to complain about work that SOMEONE else has done and GIVEN to YOU free of charge hoping to make YOUR experienced on YOUR phone BETTER.
Learn to develop and fix the issues yourself if your unhappy with the current state of things otherwise put your bottle back in your mouth and stop whining.
I managed to get a gps fix indoors by a window in well under 5 minutes. This fix was also not aided by data networks as those were disabled purposely for this test. Overall the gps works at least as well on android as it did on windows. I am using IGO Motonav because it utilizes the 480x800 resolution.
Maybe you can try enabling location services via data networks to get a fix sooner.
I used the GPS a few times.
What I noticed is that sometimes it takes too much time to initialize.
I believe it fails somehow but doesn't give a message that says so
So I just close and re-launch Navigation.
Sometimes 2 or 3 times and it usually works at that point.
Everytime I used the GPS I have been amazed by how accurate it is.
Imagine that 2 months ago I had a crappy cell phone and I've never used a GPS before so everything my HD2 can do I think is cool now LOL
give this guy a break..
I had the problem myself. His goal was maybe to receive information from other users who ARE satisfied, E.G. setups that DO WORK.
I can't get GPS to work properly, it shows the GPS icon but the road I'm getting is like 30 km's next to where I am.
Though, it works on some builds, I once had a build that worked almost flawless but can't remember which.. The build I'm using now doesn't work for a meter.
Imho, I'm not complaining, I just use winmo for GPS. But please, don't attack every new post. Maybe the op can change the title to 'Working GPS builds'/somthing like that..

yes, that's a fact, but there is no need to exaggerate 11calcal.
I think everyone here has respect for the devs, it's not like he actually ment to insult anyone with his post. Only answer if it's related to the OP's question.
Admittedly, the question was worded poorly. Rest assured it was in no way meant to be a complaint to the devs (who I have donated to).
I posted a poll because it is the only thing that is really problematic for myself but seems to be regarded as working fine by everyone.
I think that in this whole endeavor its important to not cloud development, testing and user-feedback with flame wars, so I apologize if mine came across that way unintentionally. Text via the interwebs is a poor medium when it comes to emotions, don't you think?
And to clarify, once triangulated the GPS is accurate as ever, its just the time it takes to triangulate thats bad. It takes seconds in WinMo for me.

ok it was worded in a manner that sounded ungrateful. All i was stating is as its still developing things will become better through builds/zimages etc, it wasn't meant as a flame. As i said mine is quite good so we'll leave things said in the past.
Sorry for jumping to conclusions, and honestly its not my work to defend so I suppose I was just as wrong.
You need to edit the gps config file in system /etc to your local sever it will then find signal as quickly as winmo. There is a thread somewhere I think its called quick gps or something like that with further details. Basically you need to unmount the system and edit the file, making sure it stays, (CHMOD 777) I think its defaults to US.pool.org.
My only wish is that it didn't drain battery so fast I need to use a charger now, and no TomTom, but I have not used winmo since.
moving on then and sticking with the original question...
I think a fair amount depends on which particular sat nav program you're trying to use...I've so far loaded Co-Pilot,Navigon,N-Drive and Sygic McGuider and the time to first fix, purely using GPS and not AGPS, varies depending on which I choose to use (obviously environmental factors will influence this as well). If your particular program isn't upto scratch, either try another one of find one that someone with a similar set up recommends. (and NO...I haven't got time to run a series of tests and publish best first fix results ) You also need to bear in mind that while another type of sat nav may have a better ttff, it might not work in a manner you like or have features you feel you need! My only complaint is aimed at TomTom for not releasing an Android version of their software yet
p.s. Please don't ask me for info on getting GPS software..Nearly been banned for that before

Q&A - name of the forum... Should I pretend that I don't have problems just to please developers? That's insane...

Stay FAR away from Vibrant/Captivate or any other Galaxy S variant

For those thinking about getting the Vibrant/Captivate or pretty much any variant of the Galaxy S DO NOT.
I contacted them via FB and this is the only answer they sent me
"We are working on it. We're sorry about this issue. Please be patient as we know how important this is. Thanks for reaching out!"
I have just received and activated my phone with dum, dum, dum... AT&T and this phone has nothing but GPS issues while I have to admit everything else works fine and is definitely fast.
There is absolutely no way of it accurately doing a turn by turn Navigation with Google Maps.
Ive even resorted to doing a supposed fix and nothing if anything it made the major problem worse.
Same has been reported with the T-Mobile version of the phone.
I highly regret leaving T-Mobile now because the reception was a lot better with them as well.
No wonder tons of people bad mouth AT&T, LOL.
Proof below, stick to the other manufacturers guys... Samsung is testing the waters and these phones should have NEVER been released prior to having it 100% functional.

Why didnt you wait for g2?
Hey OP!
Have you EVER tried the Vibrant or Captivate? I have the Vibrant and I have had no problems with the GPS. I use the turn by turn directions daily!
You need to know what you are talking about! Yes, there is a documented problem, but that doesn't mean that the GPS is unusable, and NO I haven't applied the GPS fix.

The G2 would definitely be a better option.
Thinking Im going to jump to the Sony X10, I hear that they are going to have the CyanogenMod on it pretty soon.

You're trying to come at me like everyone is going to have a working unit Barnes.
Just because YOU got lucky doesn't mean anyone else that buys it will.
There is already a "fix" in the works for units that have faulty GPS but whether it works or if its actually able to fix the issue is another story.
Read this and please don't post again if YOU don't know what you are talking about.

Maybe you are also confused, bring up an address and press the option that says navigation.
See that big blue area around your position THAT is not true GPS and it is only guessing where you are from cell towers.
Like others have said it will not accurately tell you where you are, you can not trust the voice directions at all.
That is faulty and yes Samsung, AT&T, T-Mobile and any other service provider should not be selling these units until it is fixed.

That Little blue arrow that tells me EXACTLY where I am on the map as I'm zooming down the freeway and accurately tells me every exit as I'm passing them? I know what I am talking about! And the turn by turn instructions work for me and it re-routes when I miss a street.
OK!!!! You all! You know EVERYTHING and I know NOTHING!
That is all! Sorry for putting in my 2 cents!
By the way, I've been on Android since the G1 in November of 2008. Rooted with the first Jesus Freke roms thru Haykuru and Dudes roms to Cyan and have been doing the same with my Vibrant.

I only own G1 & Mytouch Slide, not interested in the Vibrant like my KB's.
buy whatever you want
ive gone thru so many phones since 09, from the g1(when it first came out), hd2, n900, x10 and finally the vibrant. the hd2, n900 and x10 in a matter of 4 months. didnt like windows mobile from being used to android. n900 wasnt what i expected it to be. loved the x10 but only running 1.6. i didnt root it because I eventually bought the vibrant.
only issues i had were facebook syncing and contacts being tripled and gps in searching for a location while in house, but GPS worked FINE when I was on the road. wish i had a car dock for it at the time but will eventually get one.
OP, if you knew of these reasons, such as lag or because of the gps not working properly, then why did you buy it in the first place? i dont think barnes was getting at you, but damn dude, someone's sensitive. no one told you to buy it despite some of the imperfections the phone has. its like people saying sony shouldnt have released the x10 with 1.6 but rather have froyo but they still buy it. and if your response is to root it to get 2.1 or 2.2, i dont think the avg. customer for phones would have any idea of what you are talking about.
you cant please everyone on here. alot of people on xda either want to be a mod or just bump stupid posts because they didnt get an answer within 3 hours.
Returned my Samsung Captivate and is officially back to the HTC Dream/G1 until further notice.
Feeling better already, I can always get that phone when and if the GPS issue is worked out.
That was pretty much the only flaw it has at least on the phone I returned.

In that respect I did mess up.
Was expecting the Captivate to rock my socks off but all it did was make me mad due to the GPS issue.
I didn't know of these problems until after my phone arrived.
Its stupid for Samsung to not get those fixes out asap as that is their flagship phone.
I heard the X10 is very close to getting Cyanogen on there.. definitely a major advantage there vs. the Samsung development that's going on
if cyanogen is working on the x10, then the x10 will have alot of potential.
did you switch back to tmobile since you're back to using the g1?
btw, how often were you using the gps on the road? give the vibrant a chance, im sure the kinks will be worked out.

The X10 does seem like a better choice for now mainly in part to the CyanogenMod potential.
Im still on AT&T, Ive closed my account with T-Mobile.
I was using the gps on a regular basis thats why it had to be refunded as a replacement was more than likely to have the same issue.
Samsung has always had a bad track record with updating thier phones and I didnt want to be stuck waiting for an update that may take too long to be relevant.
I've just gotta jump in with my $.02 right quick here...

Basically, when it comes down to it, if a device were PERFECT in every standard, then EVERYONE would have one. And sense there is no such thing as PERFECT, good luck.

the captivate is using bing, correct? there's no google maps on there? maybe that was the problem.
i guess im fortunate to have my gps on point when i'm driving, but once i eventually root, etc, then maybe the gps will lock in almost my exact point, and not off 1 or 2 blocks.

AT&T network, Yes I am.
The captivate is using Google Maps but has the option in using AT&T's version of it and they both were not working.
I tested how many GPS satellites it picked up through the LBSTestMode menu and it got me no where even if there were 1 or 7 available.
Once rooted it was the same story unfortunately even with all these workarounds on xda and other sites.
Further proof that the Samsung GPS issues continue....

Swapping my SGS with a new one.

So I've got one of the many Vibrants with the flaky GPS, and none of the fixes out there seem to improve the problem. My local T-Mo store is understanding and quite willing to swap it with a new one since I'm still within the 14 day policy. The only catch is I want to put the phone as close to stock as possible before I do the trade so they can't say it was something I did to it. Right now I've rooted deodexed, and I've got clockwork ROM manager going. I've also deleted almost all the stock cruft and swapped the calendar / camera apps. Because I was so eager to make it "mine", I also failed to make any backups BUT my wife happens to have a totally stock SGS from which I can scavange from but I'd like to do it without having to root it or anything. Is this possible? If not would thread 739091 ("True Stock 2.1 firmware for vibrant"; sorry I can't post links since my account here is still new) get me there?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734475&highlight=stock is what you're looking for. Just flash this with Odin and you'll be fully unrooted.
Awesome, I really appreciate that. I'm not timid when it comes to making the phone my own (I was an early adopter of CyanogenMod for my old G1) but I just returned from a deployment and the whole 'scene' has changed a lot more than I expected lol.
Hehe. you might want to give the new T-Mobile Vibrant firmware that was leaked, it fixes the GPS problem (result may vary). Returning your SGS for a new one isn't going to fix your problem. It's not hardware related, its firmware.
An exchange won't fix your GPS issues anyway so you mine as well keep the one you have. Trust me, we try to swap them out customers all the time at my store.... It's a known issue and Samsung is SUPPOSED to be sending us an OTA soon

Hmmm, quite a few people I'd talked with locally that have the vibrant said swapping worked for them. Is it possible that newer firmware has been released for phones with a newer "birth" date than mine? Then again who should I trust more, people who hardly utilize their phones, or the people who drool over the prospect of new mods and hacks? hehe. I guess I'll just call T-Mo back and let them know I wont be bothering with a swap after all.

Hey, my pleasure. If nothing else, I have the Army to thank for bringing me out to Hawai'i and giving me the chance to meet my now wife hehe.
ALL out of the box Vibrant's have the same firmware. You need to update to the newest firmware version, it works really well. GPS is better than it is on my CLIQ.
I dunno, i've heard reports of GPS working perfect out of the box for some, and the new firmware doesn't seem to do much for my GPS,
10m accuracy at most unless I leave gps on for about an hour and maybe i'll get 6-7m accuracy, but driving, it SKIPS, (still at 10m) instead of gliding along like my G1 did.
So i'm considering perhaps swapping mine.

10M of accuracy is not bad and if you want to get technical, GMaps interprets the data differently. What shows in GMaps as 10 meters will show up as 7 under GPS test. I've got my Vibrant here at 6 Meters under GPSTest and 10 under GMaps. Get a grip people.

I wont speak for Qwerty, but in my case I was LUCKY to get 10m accuracy; usually the best I could get was 40m; usually after 5-10 minutes of 'searching' and when you're driving an unfamiliar city such as Washington DC Like I was this past week, 40m is far too inaccurate for navigation. Your 'get a grip' is completely tasteless and uncalled for in this thread.
That said, I took zephiK's advice and just flashed the new 2.1 (thread 780935), and I must say its a lot better. I can get a 10m fix indoors in less than 5 seconds from a cold start (EG without GMaps knowing where I am at all); before being indoors I would never get less than a 1000m 'fix'. As soon as I get mine fully tweaked, I'll be sure to flash my wifes phone as well since she's got the same issue.

Anyways, Qwerty I just hope you get lucky with your swap and get a working gps and hardware recovery.I've been poking around and quite a few people are saying some of thenew vibrants have issues getting into recovery and down load mode

Yeah, i'm still considering doing the swap, sometime this week, perhaps even today, got up this morning, and phone was off, (Charging Battery Symbol on the screen),
I'm not running any of the custom roms nor am i OCing. Just worried if I do the swap I may end up with even more problems. I don't know what it is with the Samsung phones, if perhaps a lot of the phones have hardware problems or what. I have only used the original stock rom, and the leaked samsung rom.
I don't mean to be picky with my phone, but I remember my 2 year old G1 getting easily 3m lock as soon as i open up the maps inside my room, and navigating with it, was extremely accurate as well. I also never had restart issues with the phone, till after dropping the thing really hard, and then even the restart thing went away.
Today, I'm lucky to get even 40m lock again, on that same leaked updated firmware. My gripe with the samsung vibrant is that there seems to be some sort of hardware problem with the phone and samsung is not saying a thing about it.
I'm telling you guys... don't bother with a swap... I work in a very high volume store and have seen almost every customer come back with GPS issues. We won't even swap them anymore for customers because TMO has listed it as a known issue, and Samsung has announced the firmware update soon... A swap WILL NOT fix the issue, but if you decide to swap it, don't go whining to us our TMO about how you "keep exchanging it and none of them work..." They know this, and YOU know it.

Not really. I just trick the gps into catching, and that wool work fine until a fix is pushed. There's not a better phone available atm.

Good lord man!
How many times are you gonna say you want to return this thing?
Your post on september 13th said you were going to return it because "the droid x destroys it"
And considering you said then that you had the fascinate for "a few days" then I think your 30 days have come and gone.
Sorry to flame but this is annoying!

2.2 will be here soon enough. Til then enjoy what is the best phone on the market. Besides the droid x is just ugly!
Sent from my rooted 1.2 voodoo Fascinate
See Ya !
Dx is really not that great of a phone ( except call quality)
Fascinate is exactly what the name implies......
Care to clarify how you "trick the gps into catching?" Thanks
Ummm please read carefully. I never said the DROID X destroys this. I said I owned the Droid X. And yes I said I was going to get rid of it.....but what did i say i was gonna get rid of it for? Windows Mobile 7 Phone.......Since im on verizon that is a few months away.
So Im with android till then. And well I dont want to get stuck with a phone whose GPS doesnt work.
Just asking who else is in the same boat...... The GPS is a huge issue for alot of people
Oh Also I returned and swapped it once for the GPS issue, I thought it was a hardware problem.
Yeah Im in the same boat I love the phone but my 30 days are almost up also .... No fix for the GPS scares me also.
A big selling point of android for me is the Free Navigation...with a ****ty GPS theres no point.
Everyone complains about this gps as if it NEVER works or obtains a fix which isn't true. It does work & it does obtain a fix, it just takes longer to do it. I live in rural northern MI, surrounded by thousands of acres of dense forests and I can say my google nav has never failed me yet. Yes, this phone is not perfect and it has room to improve, just like they all do, but that's where the great dev community comes in. Isn't that what "open source" means? Maybe next time do more research before you take the plunge, we really haven't come across anything new to the galaxy s family.

If i notice a delay in catching, I just exit navigation to the normal map, and pin point my own current location. When I go back into navigation, I'm connected.
haha it takes longer? Oh please when I use GPS to find my location it sometimes puts me in the ocean!!!!
The GPS on the fascinate is horrible.
Im suprised this doesnt get enough conversation.
my gps is fine, it locks on well... but it takes like 30 minutes to an hour to lock on lol
My last day to return the phone was Saturday and I was going to do it. But on Friday I got really drunk and went on a 3 day bender... By the time I sobered up and remembered I had to take the phone back it was too damn late
Lol. Well apparently I am not having the same problem everyone else seems to be. Like I said, mine locks when I tell it to target me, and after that navigate picks up immediately. Might have something to do with my configuration, or something I've pulled.
Mine takes a few minutes to lock, but it's accurate after that. Not really a deal breaker imo.
Did you really need a thread to tell us this though? If you're not happy, take it back. No need to let us know. We won't hate you.
Maybe I'll make a thread about how my GPS doesn't work, but I'm NOT returning my Fascinate.
Root the thing already and run a good rom like blue breeze. I did and am finally LOVING my fascinate! GPS issues are gone and I get lock in seconds. Camera is vastly improved and lag in the phone itself is gone. Why wait for a fix when it already exists? Enjoy your phone for christs sake.

My GPS works just fine. If I don't use it for a couple days it takes a bit to find me but that's not a real problem.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Same here. I travel by air a lot, so when I fire up the GPSfor the first time in a new city, it takes about 2-3 minutes to lock, but after that it's dead-on accurate. It's faster than some Garmins from a cold start.
Download "GPS Status" from the Market.
Before you go into the navigation software, open "GPS Status" and do the following:
Go to Settings -> "GPS & Sensors" -> "Manage A-GPS state" --> "Reset".
After doing this, the phone usually finds my location within 2 seconds. Works everytime!

Initial Reaction to Froyo

Hey guys, I just wanted to post a rather positive thread for a change. I know it's been a long time coming and there have been a lot of hurdles along the way, but finally we've made it.
And from my point of view, it's goood.
Seriously, nearly all lag has completely disappeared, all applications open and close super fast, and everything just works as it should. NOTE: I haven't tried out GPS yet, but since I don't use GPS, I don't care whether it works or not. So I am a very satisfied customer and can say it was completely worth the wait. Well done Samsung! Now after all this positivity and good will I'm sure the rest of you will find ample reasons not to be satisfied, please have your say and let us know what you think of the new update.
Cheers!!!
The froyo I got from kies is ok (althought it came without market, which had to be installed manually). It was still a bit laggy tho, but much better than eclair.
Unfortunately I can't get the new update because kies states 100% battery is not enough for a firmware update...

Disagree, gps works well as usual on mine.
If yours worked before the upgrade, then it's quite obvious it will act the same once upgraded...
Lucky you!
i dont care that much about the gps, but is the lag still there?
Absolutely...
The lags are still there
is there a fix right now availabal?
Samsung are working on it... behold.
please stop asking GPS. as I've done my research, no method to fix a crappy GPS, there's not gps fix thing in new released froyo. If you got a working GPS, it will always work, if your gps is not working, stop dreaming of getting it fixed by software update. either keep asking the retailer to replace it until you get a working one or, get an external gps instead. alternatively you can choose to return the phone and get a different one.
I'm gonna proceed the final one, return it and get a desire HD, if I'm lucky enough.

Except the retailer refused to replace it although I reported the problem and canceled the contract within 7 days. I still had to pay penalty to change the plan from SGS to iPhone 4. I know I can initiate legal action but it simply isn't worth the effort.

Clearly, you haven't got the froyo yet.
GPS indeed improved alot.
I mean a lot.
It take less than 6 seconds get a lock in now, which i consider more than good enough for a phone.

when will people learn that lock time is completely meaningless when ACCURACY is the main problem with the gps?
