Buzzing/Squelling Screen - iPAQ rw6828, XDA Atom General

My Atom Pure screen is buzzing when the screen is turned on.
I know its a common problem and many ppl having this problem.
I've googled many forums about this problem. As they said, its some voltage regulator problem or whatsoever...
But one thing, all the posts are very old, eg: last year.
So now still anyone having the problem? Can O2 fix this problem now?
I read many forum and they said they get the screen and gasket replaced, after a few weeks or immediately, they get the buzzing sound back.
Should i take to RMA? Its hard for me to RMA cause the service centre in Malaysia no longer provide phone service. They asked me to send to Singapore.
So I need to confirm that after RMA, my device will be fine or will be even worse.
And i more problem, did u guys have problem when charging? Mine when charging, normally the red led will light up right? My red led will light up, but the camera led will also glowing some light. Just a little bit. Only visible in a completely dark room when i charge.
I usually charged my phone before i sleep, eg: 12.00am, but today i woke up at 10.00am, i see the red led still charging. The battery indicator shows 99%.
I received 1 sms. Is this normal?
Hope all the pros can answer all my questions yea... Still don't know should i take for RMA.
Btw, RMA = Send back warranty.

This LCD squeal is very common and it does subside, eventually. I have had one Atom replaced then sent the new one back 2x and the noise is still there after 2 yrs but the squeal is almost inaudible.
If pressure is applied to the screen from being in my pocket for long periods the noise returns.
I have also returned an Atom Exec twice and finally persuaded seller to give money back.
Take my word it is a waste of time to sent back to O2 I can guarantee they wont fix it and you will be without your Atom for weeks and maybe months.

I just worried about any side effect... I can just ignore the sound.
Since our service centre no longer provide phone servicing, I need to send to Singapore for the fix...

What fix might that be?
I have not heard of one successfully fixed Atom.

And 1 more problem. The camera led lights up dimly when charging.

Screen Alignment

Oh dear.
After thinking that software was causing an alignment problem (pretty sure MultiIE DID make it worse), I reset the device to factory settings and it still happened. Each day I needed to recalibrate the machine several times, making it unusable.
So it is in the post to HTC Europe for repair and I am without my MDA Compact!
Let's hope they fix it and send it back soon.
I am having the same problem with my O2 mini on which I have to realign the screen every hour or so. I have done many hard resets but there was no improvement. I have tried many ROMs as well. So I suspect its a hardware problem. Any suggestions apart from sending it to the service centre?
I'm having the same problem, I think our only solution is to take our JAMs to a service center
me too... but already pass my warranty period~!!!! da*n :!: some1 can tell me how much to fix this problem?? oh, again,
I think it's better
Maybe a little to early to say but I just got my Magician back from the HTC Europe centre.
They have simply re-flashed the Rom back to 1.12 (May 2005). When I first unpacked it I thught the screen was out of alignment again and rang to complain.
The thing is, I have since set it, played around with it for a few hours and it seems absolutely fine.
Since all my testing previously was with the November ROM (1.13), and the problem started around December time, I wonder if it's a problem with the new November Rom?
I'll keep you posted on what happens over the next few days.
Yes it was too early
Seems to be a problem still. What happens is it loses alignment after being switched off for more than a couple of minutes.
HTC are ringing me back soon.
It's going back again!!
HTC are taking it back for another look.
Observations
I have been living with the problem, and over the period have noticed that sometimes problem is not at all there, and sometimes its pretty bad.
Interestingly, when the problem crops up, if I press the screen a little harder with my finger, the screen just returns to normal alignment. So now I just press the screen instead of doing a screen alignment - takes only 1 second.
yeah~! same exacly here... just pressed it hard then it will back to normal but sometimes not, and still, im not happy with the quality of xda mini... for such an expensive toy, this \things should not happen to too many ppl.
thx,... waiting for your update... and pls let us know the cost...
Yippeee - it's fixed
Just got it back again from HTC Europe.
They have replaced the LCD and I now have perfect screen alignment again. I can even turn it off and the problem doesn't come back!
Very, very happy.
Repair was under warranty so it didn't cost me anything.
HTC have provided very good service to me on this. I am very impressed that they continued to listen and fixed the problem for me.
mini screen misalign
just started experiencing this about a week now, very iritating, and a bright dot appeared on my mini at the lower left edge, its especially obvious wen playing a video with dark or black scenes coz the dot is really bright
i still have warranty til may16 i hope i dnt have to bring it to the service cnter

Screen fading to white ongoing issue- MONEY AHEAD!

Hi all,
I need help, suggestions, anything with an issue I've had for a while. Since the time I started loading WM6 the screen has been randomly fading to white. I have LSVW latest rom 22/4 SE and 1.40.10 radio and 1.40oli although it doesn't matter what rom you load. I tried going back to WM5 and its better but now still fades to white as well.
on advise from oli and legolas I purchased a new battery but still have the same issue.
I have dropped my phone once which resulted in a crack to the right of the DEL/CR keys so could it be a HW issue and if you think so is it one I could open up the phone and fix?
Any and all help appreciated
IN FACT IF SOMEONE CAN RESOLVE THE ISSUE I WILL DONATE SOME CASH TO THEM!
test
Im updating to
LVSW 4-23 Full, Radio 1.40.30.00, SPL 2.10.Oli, IPL 1.04
seeing if any difference comes out.
This is not the first time this issue has been reported:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-301003.html
The conclusion is that it's hardware related. It may be as simple as one of the internal ribbon connectors having a less than firm connection. It may be brought on my anything from physical movement or pressure to internal pressure if the device gats warm. However, it is possible that there is a failing component. IMHO, a case of take it for replacement/repair or first check connectors if your brave and not worried about a warranty.

HHmmm interesting thread .. the only issue i have out of that is the fade to white one.
Maybe Hardware .. i got the phone off ebay and now it has a crack in it .. so i dare say it isnt under warranty any more. (even though its a max of 6 months old).
It may also be software. I experienced the WSOD on my JASJAM when playing with the GPS-related DLL's. Once this problem appeared when switching on the camera. The screen would turn white and soft reset would not fix this, only power off/on would sort it out. Seems that the drivers do not reset (some of) the hardware to a known state on boot.
Had EXACTLY the same problem. Hoped it would be a software problem. Hard-reset a few times to no avail. Upgraded to a couple of the WM6 ROMs. No change. I did notice that when it was cool it tended not to happen, but after being on the phone a couple minutes or using the PDA for a while, it would do it AGAIN.
One weird thing I noticed was that if I did a Soft-reset and held down the Left Soft-key, I could "force" it to fade to white on start-up! VERY WEIRD.
I finally bit the bullet, and sent it back to Telstra to get it sorted. Didn't want to void warranty myself.
It has been just over 2 weeks since I sent it off, and They have sent this reply...

Hi
This phone is currently waiting on a part which was ordered yesterday. Some parts have already been issued but needs further repair.

Subject: RE: Imate JASJAM Problem
Hello, I am emailing about an I-Mate JASJAM phone I sent for repairs early last week (tel # xxx ).
Can you please update me as to status of this repair, as the Telstra shop did not provide me with a second phone while I await return/repair/replacement of the phone.
Thanks,

So, I guess it IS a hardware problem. But then again, that kind of reply, sounds a bit "dodgy" as it doesn't seem to "technical" does it?
Hope this helps.

Their reply was not very technical - does not surprise me however. The people who repair these devices are usually faced with some component/connection/screen or a m/board that needs replaced. They often fail to take account of something as basic as the case pressing on the screen or other components - particularly when device is warm. So they replace the component they think is faulty and then discover the problem is still there. With this issue in particular I think that there are no faulty components just the case is a fraction of a millimetre too tight for the internal components and hence swapping out parts can have no effect. With this fault I advise people to go for a replacement not a repair if possible.
NB: This issue should not be confused with white screen that may appear after installing particular software or when an application crashes, or when the flashing of a new ROM goes wrong! The hardware issue arises most commonly when the device gets warm or put another way goes white after maybe 10 minutes of use and will continue to go white even after hard reset.
Mike
I have this same problem! =(
My phone screen recently (4-5 days ago) started to go white. I never saw this happen with my own eyes but when i picked up my phone and its sleeping i push the power button to get to an all white screen. I can hear noises when i touch the screen but no image other than white. I can solve this by removing the battery and putting it back in, then my scren works fine....its not verry often just like 1-3 times a day.
I want to try a hard reset but have a question first: My phone is unlocked by the ebay guy i got it from, will a hard reset lock my phone back to Cingular?
Next i want to try upgrading my ROM and Radio and anything else...im looking in the wiki for instructions on how to do this. Any help? What else shouls i upgrade?
Ive only had my Hermes for around 2 months so im new to much of this.
THanks!
I recently purchased a Used Imate Jasjam (Ex Telstra Australia) with this issue.
I pulled the unit apart, and reseated and pressed the Power and LCD Display Data Cables... attempting to ensure they were firmly fastened.
I then upgraded to LVSW's Latest WM6 Release.
I have had the Phone go to White once in that timeframe since. I brought it back by pressing the power button of, then one again.
I don't feel that it's really a "100%" Faulty Part... Because it works fine othertimes. It almost seems as if connections or a Data Cable has an Issue.
I'm intending tonight and using the Phone over the weekend to see if the issue continues to occur.
BAD NEWS!!
Well, got my phone back after a bit over 3 weeks I think? I kept ringing the repair center and emailing. Finally they said it was ready, and was sent back to the shop I bought it from. Rang the shop "no it's not here yet, we will ring you"... now the repair centre to the shop is a 20 min drive... on the 3rd, I rang again at 1pm and "no it's not here yet, we will ring you when it arrives." At this point I was really getting p*ed off. So I went to the shop, and demanded, and guess what was AT the Shop?!?!?!
Anyway, after 1 friggin day, I have lost the Red & Green phone buttons! As of tonight the whole bottom section no longer work, and the screen has gone white again.
The repair report listed 3 things replaced...one was a "bezel" another was a "poly" something. I will get the report a list the replaced bits if anyone likes, but their descriptions are kind of strange if ya ask me.
Anyway, I have to send the phone back for repairs again, which could take another 3 weeks +, which I think is completely PATHETIC OF TELSTRA, especially for the fact they dont give the same phone or even similar to "loan" while I wait for my defective $1300 phone to get "repaired"... (more like 'fiddled with' & "yeah, she'll be right mate"...
GRRRRR!!!!
My girlfriends phone was having the same problem. Try popping out your SD card and putting the phone into/out of sleep and see if that brings back a visible screen. Thats how we determined her situation was a hardware problem and not a problem with the rom.

Yes, sadly this is kind of predictable as I said in an earlier post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=1233420&postcount=7
This is why, as I said, get a replacement not a repair if possible. My view is that the individual components are fine but connectors come loose or the heat generated causes pressure to be put on the screen etc So it's a problem with some cases and how the innards in some cases get squeezed. So off course changing the top poly board, connectors, bezel gasket, may by pot luck make a difference but is just as likely to make no difference at all.

Status Report:
After having my phone playing Video's Through the Night (My Way of a "Stress Test" to Generate Heat) I woke up the find the screen to be "almost completely" White.
Usually its gone completely, however in this instance I was able to see the icons through the whitewash.
I put the phone into sleep and back out and the Display is fine again.
Being that these phones are much easier to pull apart and put back together than my old JasJar I might to do some further experimentation.
I think the issue will have something to do with either one of the following
- Heat
- Pressure on the LCD from Parts Around it
- Faulty Ribbon or Power Leads to the LCD
My suggestions
- In the Case of Heat... I'll run the Same Test, with the Phone Directly in front of a small airconditioning unit I have.
- In the Case of Pressure, I'm going to look and see if I can place some extra Insulation Tape or Similar on the Phone to relieve this
- I wish I could find somewhere to buy the Replacement Ribbon Cables but I don't know where I can get them in Australia... any ideas?

We wait to see. Mind you one guy on these boards found he could get half an hour from his device if he put it in the freezer for a while - so I'm not sure that air-con will be strong enough!!!
Mike
Well Results.....
After pulling apart the unit and reconnected, I think I found my cause to simply be excess pressure.
I've removed the "Black Plastic" Micro SD Card from its Blanking Plate.
Since I've done this... not one White Screen Whatsoever.
I don't use an SD Card, so the issue is resolved for me, however it is very interesting.
Could be Pressure or Heat (Small Hole Might Increase Airflow/Allow for Greater Dissapation or something)
Hi folks,
i've also small experience with this "white screen" issue and just wanted to inform you about it.
I got the device from my former boss who did already complain about this "white screen" issue on his O² XDA trion with original ROM. (honestly i did not really believe him due to my experience with couple of other devices so after i got the device i was just wondering - ok back to the facts).
I installed on Friday the Windows Mobile VI Pro - BLACK 2.5 Release and until today it was running (as far as i remember expect one time) nearly perfect w/o white screens. About 45min ago, i flashed the device with BLACK 3.0 Release and got until now about 5-10 times a white screen.
I assume this is not a hardware ONLY issue but indeed very strange.
I'll go back to 2.5 and will look forward if i get again the white screen or it'll be ok.
Cheers so far

You are right to ask the question "is it hardware or software".
1
We know a white screens can arise if folk duff up flashing a new ROM.
2
We know there is a hardware caused white screen that comes and goes often when device gets warm.
3
But there maybe white screens caused by some kinds of crashing software or a buggy ROM etc
Crucially in terms of finding a cure will be distiguishing between these.
2 for most people is easy - take it back and get a replacement.
1 is a matter for the ROM upgrading and fixing boards
3 is a case of trying different ROMs testing 3 party software by selective installation until the problem starts or stops.
In your case I am worried that this is a number 2 device as it did sometimes get the problem before you flashed the ROM and now it's worse. It may only be worse because this particular ROM is generating more heat and consequently more white screens. (see explanations elsewhere).
I suppose if it's an occasional problem you might live with it but otherwise it's replacement at best and repair as a rather dodgy alternative.
Mike
Hey Mike,
well, before flashing the device with a custom ROM, in my opinion it was really difficult to use it.
By flashing it with V 2.5, it was very good usable and with V 3.0 it returned to become more unusable. Nevertheless, i upgraded 10min ago with HARD-SPL-V7 and it's running fine now (i've been wating with downgrading to V 2.5. If it returns to become unstable, i will downgrade to V 2.5 again.
I'll keep you informed.
yes for this particular "white screen" issue it will be useful to hear how things go - thanks
Mike
White screen - in my case definitely a hardware issue
Hi folks,
i was testing and playing around with my Hermes and today i found the problem (very funny because now i can't reproduce it anymore but just read ahead).
Today i was playing around and after pressing by accident on the case of the Hermes, the screen appeared disappeared and changed into white.
Please download the video i recorded from the attached link - you'll see that it was able to reproduce it by tapping on the case:
http://asuka.descipe.de/dphome/test/HTC_Hermes_White_Screen_issue.mp4
Please use VLC or MPC (additional codecs required) to watch the movie.
Honestly i'm not sure if this can be reproduced by anyone but this makes the whole situation much more clear.
Any feedback is welcome.
Cheers

Touch HD/Blackstone Backlight Auto Adjust Problem

Firstly let me say this:...... I have a phone that has had to go back once because of a weird problem - so it might be "one of those phones " (the prob WAS fixed by a new board from HTC but thats another story !)
Here's the prob. Today when I was typing a text the back light kept adjusting up and down. This has NOT happened before So I did some tests:
1) Its to do with the autoadjust feature (not a prob when its OFF)
2) All is OK UNTIL you start to type this is how I spotted it typing a text. The backlight was going up and down - I thought my eyes were going!!!
ATTEMPTED RESOLUTION:
Fristly I did a soft reset......(prob still the same)
I down loaded LUMOS, which shows actual numbers for the light sensor,
Here's what I found......
It moves up and down a bit then settles, in a dark area its on say 3 or 0 but when I type on the screen it goes up and down like a yoyo ! ie 3,79,120,3,0 if I stop typing it settles on 3 or 0. AND THAT IN A NUT SHELL IS I "THINK" THE PROB !
"The light sensor seems to be affected by typing."
I never noticed this before so this may be a fault.
LUMOS seems to cope slightly better than win software with this and I can get around this by turning the sensor off, but if its faulty BACK it GOES....(AGAIN)
The last prob did my head in. I love this phone but I'm not sure if I got a touchy one !(pardon the pun)!
ANY HELP/THOUGHTS VERY GRATEFULLY ACCEPTED
Further update - CAUSE !
I have found out the cause !
It happens when screen taps (sound) is turned on and is FINEwhen it is off. I only tuned this on last week !
SO what they heck this is some software bug perhaps - any thoughts ?
Thanks so much !
First my touch hd died suddenly two months before one year is over. So I sent in for repair and paid $20 for some sort of fee on the top of shipping in. When I get it back, I thought everything is doing fine. Then suddenly the screen started acting weir. It turns on sometimes but sometimes it won't. I tried master reset. I tried to contact Htc. And I even try to hit it since I was pretty upset getting this lemon.
I happen to have to travel to Taiwan and I took it to a cell phone store hoping they can fix it since it is a Taiwan phone. I got it back today and they said it will cost $170 to fix. And they said that I got liquid in. I have never let it get close to any water or liquid. Obviously they said the sensor was activated. (I don't even know there is a sensor for water).
Anyway, my phone now can call in but screen turns on when it likes to. While I am now playing with it. I turn all the auto backlight off, including with battery or power connected. And I also turn off the auto backlight sensor. Somehow for almost two hours, I can turn on anytime I want to and off any time. I do not how long it will last. If this is the problem, that means the software of auto backlight off has bugs. I hope this helps those who are like me lost some sleep over this HTC nightmare. I do not expect it is fixed at this point. May be I am just lucky that it stays controllable for the past two hours. Good luch y'all.

[Q] x10i wont turn on

Hi, need some help my girlfriend through my x10 at me and cracked the touchscreen digitizer which i replaced with a genuine one.The thing is when i went to turn it on nothing happened so i charged it for about a day when eventually the red battery led started flashing sometimes but still the phone wont turn on.with more charging and disconnecting the battery etc i got the green led to come and when i turned the phone on i got a short vibration and green led but nothing else.so tried updating with seus and finally it seen my phone and told me my software was up to date so i tried to re-install but kept getting errors so still phone wont turn on and now green led does nothing.so cut a long story short i took apart the phone again and noticed the lcd had a line down the middle which seems like its cracked also.My question now is if the lcd is cracked would that be why the phone wont turn on i would of thought it would have came on but just had colours splurted all over the screen.Oh and just so you know battery is sitting at 3.7v so is well charged,im thginking the motherboard is gone, please advise me what to do next.
did she throw the phone at you coz you wrote her a letter without paragraphs?
lol,can you help me
lol not really
but it does sound like the motherboard is screwed. not sure how the 2nd screen got cracked tho.
Why haven't you taken the phone in yet? is it not on contract?
O.k., I agonised myself throug you post....
PLEASE make your first post easier to read, as there are several non-native english speakers here. (Like me ).
Can you please write something about what happened to the phone?
- Did it work fine before you repaired the touch module?
- Why was the old module defective (Did the phone fall down or did anybody sit on it).
- Is there some waterdamage?
The more information, the better....

[Q] red led + water vapor after water splash

Hi to everyone. Well, the other day I was in my friends pool, and I left the phone on a table near the pool. The usb and headset connector were closed (double checked).
Ok, In some moment, my friend jumps to the pool, and some water goes to the phone. Because I've sent the phone to RMA when the earpiece got broken, I was thinking the waterproof was ****ed up (also, the a** holes that repaired it, rounded the screws ); and I was right. I've found some water vapor in the top of the screen, and if I press it, some water came out from the earpiece.
Instantainly, I've removed the battery and let the vapor dissapear (I've left the phone inside the house, in room temperature).
After the vapor goes away, I've tested it.
Although its still working, the system doesnt started anymore (boot loop on the cyanogen), also the Red led of the notification RGB led stayed on.
Now, I've flashed the stock Froyo sbf, so tomorrow I can call the RMA (although Personal of Argentina, doesn't pickup any call for tech. service anymore, ) and try to send it.
Because Im a little bit not-optimistic, I just want to ask if someone knows how to turn off the led (I was thinking on "echo 0 /sys/class/leds/red ... etc"), but maybe other solutions may work.
EDIT: Looks like if you charge the phone to 100%, the red led turns off (at least, it didn't turn on again)
EDIT2: The led turned on AGAIN. Im really starting to get angry. My idea to do "echo 0 /sys/class/leds..." failed, because the led its off (at least, that thinks the kernel).
Thanks in advice!
Funny u type the "F" word but ain't type the 2nd part off "ass****".
I wouldn't worry about the red light I sent mine in with it. They sent me a whole new replacement also with red light! U should be fine in my opinion. ¿ good luck!
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
Hi. Well, I've charged it till 100% and the red light dissapeared. Kinda of strange, because the battery indicator says "60%". However, its likely impossible to contact the RMA of my carrier. Theyre always busy.
EDIT: The led turned on again..
Thanks

sorry, i didn't fixed it. also, some part in the LCD is blurred.
now i'm trial with the carrier for that
It's a good idea; I just received (last week) my phone back, they changed the whole "mainpiece". I had a camera "issue" (there were something in the lens).
Just don't tell for your carriers service the whole story and it'll be fine.
Actually, the whole story its true. I never opened the phone, neither modified anything related to the hardware.
Anyway, good luck with that!
I see, but in my carriers warranty the "swimming with phone" is denied; it's only spill-resistant as they wrote. (The phone could resist more of course, but they won't replace that.)

But it was a spill, he didn´t dive with it.
Anyways, i got the same problem, but my luck was a bit worse. Besides the red Led problem, the water screwed my LCD screen.
The technician charged me R$330 (or $175) to fix the phone. So I decided to do it myself and bought a new LCD on ebay ($33 with shipping), will replace it in a week or so.
Did anyone solved the red led problem?
Do i have to replace some hardware part that to fix the LED?
I dropped mine in a muddy puddle over a year ago ( everything was sealed), and the red lights been on ever since then, after that happened there was a tiny bit of vapur visable just to the left of the LED, but apart form the constant red LED which comes on as soon as the battery is inserted regardless of weather the phone is on or off everything seems OK.
The only downside is that i dont think it would survive another drop/spash as the bezel is now cracked ( top plastic part roughly above main earpeice to the headphone port ) does anyone know where i can obtain a Defy outer shell ( chasis) complete with gorilla glass/digitiser ec?
