HTC TyTN II Navigation Upgrade Kit (CU S120) - Tilt, TyTN II, MDA Vario III Accessories

Has anyone tried the HTC TyTN II Navigation Upgrade Kit (CU S120)
Was thinking about getting it as i no longer trust my Brodit active holder due to my USB port blowing while using it and having to send the phone away to HTC for repair
http://www.expansys.com/htc/p_htc_item.aspx?i=159378
Only £23.95 so an even cheaper solution than the Brodit

Does this include only the cradle and charger, or also the external GPS-antenna as shown in the picture?

I assume as it's the navigation kit it will include the GPS antenna as shown, i've ordered one as very cheap for an original HTC cradle. says they should have stock in 8 days so i'll let you know when i receive it

Although the external antenna is pictured, the description reads-
The GPS Navigation Upgrade Kit contains:
HTC TyTN II Car Charger
HTC TyTN II Gooseneck Device Holder
I take that to mean NO antenna. You really don't need it anyway. This looks like a nice rig. I wish they had a better description. I wonder if it is fixed or if it can rotate 90 degrees.
Good find, though. Thanks.

I was assuming as it's a navigation kit it would include the antenna as if it doesn't it's just a straight forward car kit.
just hoping i can take the mount off and somehow fix it to my proclip which is already in place, i'll let you know when it turns up and take a picture as the one shown is for a different model

Be carefully
In this picture is show an upgrade kit for P3600

Hi All
The picture for this kit has been updated
http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=159378
As shown, it doesn't include the GPS antenna.

Well the GPS antenna is lying next to it in that picture, you have the cradle, the car charger and the object on the right is the GPS antenna.
Had one ordered since December and now due in 5th FEB, if it ever turns up i'll let you know what the kit comes with

That kit looks pretty nice. I went the cheap route and got a universal one from ebay. It also comes with a charger.

What? If you mean this the thing on the right from the cradle is the windshield mount.
Or what did you mean?

Anyone that has this care to review it?

I've had one on order since december and the due date keeps getting moved back, it's saying now it's 5 days although i won't hold my breath.
I'll post some pictures etc when i receive it

That's because expansys have changed the picture since i posted that comment, it used to have the gooseneck mount and then a GPS antenna lying by the side like this one
http://www.expansys.com/p.aspx?i=151392

This kit was supplied with my TyTN II when I got my phone through Three Australia (without the GPS antenna). It's a good quality mount, and I have had no problems with the car charger (glows blue matching my dash colour ;p).
It's a really snug fit and easy to adjust from portrait to landscape depending on your preference, and the windscreen mount is very secure.
You can't slide the phone in with a case (although I don't have one, the slimline rubber cases *may* at a real pinch, but I wouldn't bet on it).
I'm happy with it - especially as it was thrown in by the dealer.

My kit turned up this morning, it's basically the herbert richter cradle with gooseneck mount and a HTC car charger which has a blue glowing HTC on it
The phone fits really nice in the cradle but you cannot slide it open to use the keyboard. All in all quite pleased as don't use the keyboard while driving anyway.

I got one of these from my carrier (3 australia) well. the charger is good & the mount sems to stick quite well to he windshield. i've gone through a few not so smooth stretches of road with out a problem. i am quite concerned about scratching the device though. as others have already mentioned, it's quite a tight snug fit, which is good for obvious reasons... the inside of the holder however is just naked plastic, no soft lining... is this going to cause scratches on the front of the phone with extended use? anyone wh has had one of these for a while care to comment?
also what are the chances of getting a seidio protected tytn ii into that holder? is there an alternative holder which will snap into the goose neck??

Brodit Active Car Mount-modded with audio/charging

Here's the short tutorial on how to modify a Brodit/Proclips active car mount to work with an HTC y-cable. This allows you to slide your Kaiser into the device holder, and have audio out capabilities while charging.
First, you need to use a knife to separate the top plate from the charging plug. Slide your knife gently between both sides to completely separate it. If you look carefully there is a thin line between the top plate and the bottom mount.

Once you've removed the top plate, you'll see the usb charging cable:
Remove it and get the y-cable ready to install. You need to remove the rubber casing around the end of the y-cable in order for it to fit correctly:
Once installed in the holder, it should look like this:
Use some type of adhesive to reattach the top plate:
Here's the finished product:
Tank you very much for your work. I've got my active car-mount yesterday and will mod it this weekend!
Bye, Peter
Glad to see that you had success, I will mod my active cradle now.
I think I am gonna use the one modded like this on my desk - I still can't see a decent landscape desk cradle on the market, so I think this mod + a bit of lead + some of that polymorph stuff I use in my passive holder version of this mod will make a nice desk cradle. I could link it into the stereo so I can choose songs on the phone while I game on the PC

any expierences with that or simalar units from other brands?
This ruins the 12V cable originally supplied by Brodit/Proclip, correct?
No - I put a little bit of heatshrink tubing on the exposed metal part that doesn't go into the phone, and I'm using it as the charger still.
Hey guys/gals...
I bought a Y cable for my Tilt and when I plug it in to my phone and plug in an audio connector to external speakers and the power charger to the other side of the Y, I get charging, but the audio still comes out of the phones speaker and not to the adapter? Is there a setting I have to change to stop the audio from coming out of the phone and divert it to the audio out adapter?
Thanks for any help!
Congratulations!
You have given me the confidence to get on and do mine. Spookily, yesterday my audio output from IGo started being fed to my car speakers via bluetooth for no apparent reason! Getting the nav instructions is my main purpose here. It wont last Im sure . .
Use the BT Toggle app someone here designed. It works GREAT!!
ANyone know why audio won't come out of the Y splitter for my Tilt? Do I need to switch something on/off in the phone to divert the audio from the phones speaker to the audio jack?
Thanks
Did you verify that it works on another HTC phone? It's just plug and play on all of my HTC phones.
Nice Modding guide...
may do this, but can you tell me if the Brodit/ProClip stuff puts the Kaiser in a good enough position to use it's built in GPS?
Sure, it works just fine where it's mounted.

Just got back from a 650 mile round trip weekend, and YES, the Brodit/Proclip put my Tilt in a perfect place for the satellites/GPS to work wonderfully.

Brodit Car Mounts

Anyone had any experience of the Brodit pro mount and device holders?
I am looking to purchase the following items for my car:
- Brodit Active Holder - 968848
- Brodit Pro Clip - 653716
That should hopefully mount and secure my Touch Pro nicely in my Toyota Aygo and charge at the same time. I'm not keen on having the place the device in a holder and then find the cable and plug the connector into the device so this option looks great. Just a one step process!
Anyway, all comments would be appreciated.
Thanks
Regards,
Neil
I got the Brodit active holder for my Touch (Elfin)... Besides the fact that it was a little pricey for the 2 items, they work great, and fit perfectly in my Jeep. I'd recommend this holder to anyone... And I'm considering getting one for my Raph...
Yeh, they are a little pricey but I'd rather spend £54 on a good solid mount which is easy to use and not throw my £500 new phone around the car onto the floor as I am driving and the fact that it only requires 1 step from me to get it mounted in a good viewing position and have it charging at the same time is a bonus!
Thanks
Regards,
Neil
I'm keeping my eye on this one and will probably purchase when it's available:
http://www.easydevices.co.uk/pp/HTC..._PRO_CUSTOM_CAR_MOUNT_WITH_HANDSFREE_KIT.html
Had a very similar one for my Kaiser and it was excellent.
I seem to like the look of the Brodit systems as they fit to the dashboard trim and so should reduce vibrations a lot more and hold the device more securely. I also do not need the hands free part as my Aygo came with inbuilt Bluetooth anyway which works perfectly so am just after a holder with charger which is what i shall purchase a bit later today from Clove Technology.
Thanks
Regards,
Neil
My brother has a Brodit car mount for the Tytn II and it wasn't a perfect fit. You have to specifically angle the phone while inserting it or the USB wont insert and the you cannot seat the phone.
I bought a CarComm holder which although a little chunky was a perfect fit. Now that I have upgraded to a touch pro i have removed the side part of the bracket and it still holds my Touch Pro fine.
That said, as soon as available i will be swapping it for the official TouchPro cradle (which they say is smaller). http://www.carcomm.nl/carcomm/websh...ProductId=0910B5DC-5056-8659-08A2B18B78FC3CA5

Hi there,
as a longtime Brodit car holder user, I would like to bring light into this conversation. I'm using Brodit car-kits since... forever LOL ;o) Been using it with my Symbians (N73, E61, E90) and to be honest, the materials they use, the way it's glued together, isn't that fancy for the price they want. Now I always had in my mind another company, making 3rd party car-kits and I knew they were perfect, seen it in my friends' Chrysler, and the holder really did fit the car with style and looks. I just could not remember the name of the company. Yesterday as I was dreaming, I had a flashback and remembered the company. So if you really want to go for quality and good looks with your HTC, consider looking after Carcomm's holders. Here's a link of one I'm getting, the price is almost the same as the complete kit of Brodit and Proclip. Personally, I do prefer window-mounted holders, so I've got nothing to think of anymore, ordering the piece in the link:

Active Holder for HTC Touch Pro
Keep your PDA in an active holder in your vehicle, and you will always have a freshly charged battery! Active holders are available with a cigarette lighter cable for connection to the vehicle's 12 Volt socket, and for fixed installation for connection inside the dashboard. The device has got the connector for charging on the side of the device. The active holders offer a firm fit, it is easy to put the phone in the holder and then connect the charging cable to it. The device is in a horizontal, open position in the holders.
The holders are equipped with a tilt swivel, this means that you can adjust the angle of your device for easier viewing and avoiding light reflection. Attach onto the ProClip Mounting Platform.
Active holder with cig-plug
Item no. 968853

My Active Brodit holder for the HTc Touch Pro - Vertical mount style (closed) and the pro clip centre for my AYGO were dispatced today so when I get them, maybe Thursday I would expect then I shall post here to let you know what I think of it
Bought one of them and waiting as well for my Integra, I'll keep everyone posted of how it looks like and the feel in the car too.
I think the Brodit holders are really good. But I can verify that the active holder for TyTN II wasn't perfect, but fullt functional, The non-active worked alot better.
So I'm gonna get a Brodit car holder for my Raphael as soon as the horisontal one get out. I want to be able to use the keyboard even in the car.
They have already an horizontal holder for the Touch Pro, reference 848853.
The vertical one has a good fit, but whenever you slide the TP out, the Stylo gets stuck in the holder, so it drops out. Little, but very annoying design faul
I need to get more patience, then I would have waited for the horizontal one
Hmm, I just mounted it so I'm not really sure whether it has flaws yet. Give me two days

Brodit 843848
I bought a Brodit 843848 active holder with 3-in-1-adapter. I totally forgot that the 3-in-1-adapter makes the Touch Pro go into headset mode so the internal speaker is disabled.
Anyone knows if it's possible to modify the adapter so that only USB charging is working? I've sent an e-mail to Brodit, but they cannot (or will not) help me with this (which I can understand in a way).
Thanks!
I've always used brodit mounts way back when i first had a qtek9100. they are great and you can chop the cig adaptor and wire it in directly which makes it more permanent....
I bought the horizontal open mount, and it holds the device really secure. As was mentioned earlier it does take a lot of the vibration out of the whole setup because of the way it wedges in between panels. I used a bracketron grip-it prior to the brodit setup and it was junk because it was universal, huge, and a vent mount which meant it flopped around since the vents move up/down.
I paired it up with a 3 in one cable from ebay, wired in a 2nd cig lighter to the inside of my dash, then plugged the cig charger into the cable so that the result is one cable coming out of my dash near the upper cup holder, then wired the 3 in one into my aux in on my headunit. Now i have music/gps coming out of my speakers and when calls come in it goes to my parrot via BT so i can use the mic mounted to my steering column cowl. I regret having spent the 20 bucks on the bracketron grip-it *facepalm*

hook Tilt to '05 Mustang Shaker 1000

Hi, does anyone know how to hook a ATT Tilt to '05 Mustang Shaker 1000 stereo? I'd prefer to not do the FM transmitter if possible.
I have an '06 Mustang with a shaker 1000 system. I use a media gateway from best buy that hooks into the back of the radio. I has an Ipod usb interface and a 3.5mm headphone jack. All I have to do is press the sat/aux button(AUX is the button on my stereo, some say SAT) When I get Home I will post the part number and brand. What color is your mustang?

Hi, Thanks for the reply. Its Torch Red. Pics of it are here:

I think I found it. Is this what you have? http://www.icarkits.com/product_info.php?products_id=3411
That's it. It easy to install, you just have to take the center console out. It works well.
Nice car!

Did you get it done yet?
I used a P.I.E. adapter that fits into one of the sockets behind my Shaker 500. Then the car harness just plugs right into the P.I.E. harness... no splicing.
I hooked up the Tilt output on a miniusb-to-3.5mm adapter with built-in mic that I got (originally for T-Mobile G1). That way I can take calls using the stereo. Even on my convertible 'Stang it works very well. Just can't go 90mph with the roof down or your caller won't hear a thing you said ;-)
I mounted the phone to the stereo using a Panavise metal bracket... looks *very* clean and it's very sturdy. No holes drilled, connects to stereo bolts. The phone mounts to the black metal bracket using a generic PDA "vent" holder I found at Target. I ripped the vent clips off and used some small screws to fasten it to the Panavise mount... rock solid.
I have the extra cable wrapped behind the mount so that I can take the phone off the mount, stretch the cord out & place the phone on the passenger sun visor so my kids can watch movies from the back seat using the car stereo for sound. Works like a charm!
Every person who's seen it up close says the same two things: 1) How'd you do that? & 2) I'm gonna do that for my car!
This is a pic of my prototype... the final setup has less wire exposed and the adapter's mic facing the driver.

Don't bother knockin' a 'Stang.
Any car in the same class as the Mustang will be defeated. Mustangs start out with a fun little V6 and end with GT500's & Cobra-Jet editions that can easily POP-A-WHEELIE going down the track. No little-boy honda or corolla-on-crack can match that. Even a regular GT500 will go toe-to-toe with an M3, for about $10k less.
And you Moped & Bow-Tie boys have your days numbered.... the next gen powertrains come out next year! Let the battles begin (in a humane, legal sort of way... of course ;-)
Bah I'll keep my 19 yr old Taurus.
Hey, your Taurus is a very sturdy car! S.H.O. by any chance?
Our next family car will either be a Taurus or a Flex. The Sync system teams up with your Tilt via BT and works well or so I'm told.
If you want to mount your Tilt to your dash, try Pana-Vise for a VERY sturdy mount... it's the backbone of my setup.
Yes SHO FTW.

New use for Samsung Car Dock

Today I moved my car stereo lower in the dash and mounted my Samsung Tab car-dock in the original stereo location.
Took me all of about an hour, cost me $10 (in addition to the dock I already had). I am fairly pleased with it.
I was glad to find that I did not have to extend any of the wires going to the original car stereo. They were plenty long enough to put the stereo down in where the little pocket used to be. All I had to do was cut the back of the plastic pocket out, and use the stock bolts to bolt through the plastic in to the body of the stereo. Part one done...
Then I used a piece of 2 inch wide steel bent in to form as a bracket for the Samsung dock. I mounted the new bracket to the original stock stereo mounting bolts. Then I cut a piece of black plastic to entirely close off the double din opening. This was hot glued and epoxied in to place from the rear so it is nice and clean. Part two done.
I then had to cut the last portion of the Samsung Tab mounting arm off. All I needed was the small portion where the dock actually bolts to it. This allowed me to still use the swivel to get the right mounting angle. The ONLY issue I had was that I wanted to mount it close enough to the dash that I had to cut a notch in the stereo bezel to accommodate the power cord to the dock. Not a big issue, and from the driver side its not visible at all.
I then mounted the dock to the bracket through a small hole I cut in the piece of black plastic I had mounted.
Originally, the TAB was mounted via the dock on top of my dash. I like this position much better!!!
Here is the end product.

Sorry, I meant to post this in accessories. Can a mod move it for me?
Does the tab tie into your stereo over bluetooth or a line out? Or do you just use it for navigation?
Works perfectly via bluetooth. I was having some skipping issues, but they were cleared up with the last update of Car Dock. They now turn off wi-fi when in dock, which is what was causing the issues.
Very nice setup. How does the navigation work on the SGT.? i.e. is there any delay or lag. are you on Edge when using the nav.?

Google Navigation works as well on the SGT as any other phone - better in fact due to the higher resolution of the Tab. Just needs a reasonable 3G signal - which isn't hard to find. For me it's the best satnav software out there.
I live in Southern CA, so there is no issue with getting a signal. The Navigation works perfectly for me. A couple years ago I spent $2000 for an indash navigation, DVD player. What a waste that was... Its amazing how technology has changed in just a couple years.
I now have full Internet, navigation, phone and multi-media capabilities in my dash AND its removable!
Very nice work. The scarf is a nice touch too.

A real 1 DIN Android unit

Hi,
I'm looking for a head unit that would actually be 1 DIN, including the screen (so no pop-up screen, no tablet-ish on a stick). I wish I had more space but I have to make do with this:
{

If the screen doesn't fill the whole slot (because that's a weird form factor), that's ok. I'm semi-tempted to buy a used Parrot Asteroid Classic but it's sooooo outdated that I'm think I'd prefer my tape player.
Alternatively, just a screen (which would be plugged to a Raspberry Pi or whatever) could be a step forward.
I'd be grateful for any piece of information.
I'm hoping to be able to achieve something like that:
I had a pyle slide out touchscreen in my ranger. I just had to adjust the screen so it didn't hit the vent above it similar to your setup. What I did instead though was remove the vent and block it off above the single din. that made a nice slot for the screen to fit when extended. Wish I had pictures but I switched trucks and haven't swapped stereo decks yet. Used the back up camera input to plug in whatever I wanted, bypassed the e brake safety, and wired the control for the camera to a switch. You could do something similar

I'm looking for a head unit that would actually be 1 DIN, including the screen (so no pop-up screen, no tablet-ish on a stick). I wish I had more space but I have to make do with this:
If the screen doesn't fill the whole slot (because that's a weird form factor), that's ok. I'm semi-tempted to buy a used Parrot Asteroid Classic but it's sooooo outdated that I'm think I'd prefer my tape player.
Alternatively, just a screen (which would be plugged to a Raspberry Pi or whatever) could be a step forward.
I'd be grateful for any piece of information.

I've searched high and low and have never found any.

Something like this i think may fit ..... See the exact dimensions.
Removing the air vents is an idea but I don't wand to hack the dashboard, the car is becoming something of a collectible.
I've checked all the Joying's website, the smaller they have is like 95mm in height, that's still much taller than 1 DIN (50 mm).
I just installed the Joying 95mm one in my BMW Z3 some days ago. It still needs some work, but should fit pretty well in the end without hacking the dashboard. I'll post some pictures tomorrow.

Excellent, can't wait to see them!
I didn't hack it, its removable just like yours. If you consider it collectible I wouldn't change the deck then either way.

As promised, here's some pictures. As you can see, the unit has snap-in connectors to mount the panel on the base unit. On the panel, the position of the connectors can be changed to set it higher or lower:
Here I used the highest position possible. This way, it sits right below the vents but does not block them.
Currently there are two problems: There is too much distance from the dashboard and the sides are uncovered.
I already modified the original connectors to shorten the distance (initially it was like 5mm more), but that's the maximum possible with the modification. Additonally, in this position the connection cable will bump into the dashboard with shorter distance because it sits above the radio bay:
So I put the panel one step lower. This way it does cover the heating controls about 1-2 mm, but I think that's fine.
This way, the connection cable is just in front of the radio bay so it would be possible to shorten the distance between radio and panel:
I'm just constructing new mounting connectors with shorter distance. If this works out, I'll also construct 3d-printed side covers to have it perfect.
Many thanks for the pics! Not a fan of the look but maybe I can live with it...
Is that the 6.2"?
Yes, it's the 6.2" one. I've now finished the new mounts and put it a little lower because it looks better that way. The air vent controls are partly covered by the screen, but still useable without problems.
My first set of 3D-printed mounts melted when the car was in the sun, now I made a new set with a more temperature-stable material (ABS instead of PLA). Hope this one will work
@WhiteTitane did you find a solution (nice S54 by the way, clownshoe or roadster?)
I've the same desire for my roadster, did you find a solution that didn't crowd the dash quite as much as the 6.2"?
Hope you did the fan mod on the 1-din chassis ? Older cars tend to have heater air leaks that could cause this install to overheat. Probably best to have the fan blowing into the head unit, and exhausting via the front cable hole.
