Here's the short tutorial on how to modify a Brodit/Proclips active car mount to work with an HTC y-cable. This allows you to slide your Kaiser into the device holder, and have audio out capabilities while charging.
First, you need to use a knife to separate the top plate from the charging plug. Slide your knife gently between both sides to completely separate it. If you look carefully there is a thin line between the top plate and the bottom mount.

Once you've removed the top plate, you'll see the usb charging cable:
Remove it and get the y-cable ready to install. You need to remove the rubber casing around the end of the y-cable in order for it to fit correctly:
Once installed in the holder, it should look like this:
Use some type of adhesive to reattach the top plate:
Here's the finished product:
Tank you very much for your work. I've got my active car-mount yesterday and will mod it this weekend!
Bye, Peter
Glad to see that you had success, I will mod my active cradle now.
I think I am gonna use the one modded like this on my desk - I still can't see a decent landscape desk cradle on the market, so I think this mod + a bit of lead + some of that polymorph stuff I use in my passive holder version of this mod will make a nice desk cradle. I could link it into the stereo so I can choose songs on the phone while I game on the PC

any expierences with that or simalar units from other brands?
This ruins the 12V cable originally supplied by Brodit/Proclip, correct?
No - I put a little bit of heatshrink tubing on the exposed metal part that doesn't go into the phone, and I'm using it as the charger still.
Hey guys/gals...
I bought a Y cable for my Tilt and when I plug it in to my phone and plug in an audio connector to external speakers and the power charger to the other side of the Y, I get charging, but the audio still comes out of the phones speaker and not to the adapter? Is there a setting I have to change to stop the audio from coming out of the phone and divert it to the audio out adapter?
Thanks for any help!
Congratulations!
You have given me the confidence to get on and do mine. Spookily, yesterday my audio output from IGo started being fed to my car speakers via bluetooth for no apparent reason! Getting the nav instructions is my main purpose here. It wont last Im sure . .
Use the BT Toggle app someone here designed. It works GREAT!!
ANyone know why audio won't come out of the Y splitter for my Tilt? Do I need to switch something on/off in the phone to divert the audio from the phones speaker to the audio jack?
Thanks
Did you verify that it works on another HTC phone? It's just plug and play on all of my HTC phones.
Nice Modding guide...
may do this, but can you tell me if the Brodit/ProClip stuff puts the Kaiser in a good enough position to use it's built in GPS?
Sure, it works just fine where it's mounted.

Just got back from a 650 mile round trip weekend, and YES, the Brodit/Proclip put my Tilt in a perfect place for the satellites/GPS to work wonderfully.

Okay. I've looked at a lot of cases. I want a case that exposes the miniusb port. I need a side case. This is just to plug in my headphones. If I can't find one like that. I think these two should work?:

I would've bought a A2DP bt headset, but it made no sense to me since most of the time my phone is in my pocket.
I am looking for the EXACT SAME THING!
BUMP
I spent about three hours today on the google and ebay looking for the exact same thing. Does anybody have any ideas? All the ones I found completely block the USB port.
I'm a bit particular though. I want a magnetic snap. The OEM velcro case actually has an exposed USB if you put the phone in head-first (assuming you have the case on your right hip), but I don't like the velcro. It's too noisy for in taking the phone in and out in quiet meetings and such. Not to mention that the OEM case is pretty cheap feeling compared to OEM cases for previous HTC devices (such as the Mogul, which had the PERFECT magnetic snap case with exposed USB).
Also, not only do I want exposed USB, but I want to be able to take the phone out without unplugging the USB. I've seen cases with a hole in the middle (but not for the Pro), but this sucks because you have to unplug the USB before taking the phone in and out of the case.
I'm tempted to get another OEM Mogul case and just dealing with the fact that the TP is "loose" in the case (not form fitting) because the USB port is exposed pretty nicely even though the case is not designed for it.

I'm really looking for a side case, but for you if you don't mind, just get a pouch /w belt clip. It can have the end exposed, put in headfirst and that would work. But I want a side case. I was really looking for a side case that fits, this one has elastic on the end so I wouldn't be able to cut it. If it has leather on the sides (instead of form fitting). I'm just looking to be able to connect my headphones through it and this setup will work nicely. I'm probably ordering by next week if I can't find a better solution.
Bah I give up! Too many cases. Now I'll just decide. I'm gonna need the headphone adapter and I don't really want to carry my phone on my belt being a 15 yr old >.> I'm just getting this pouch:
Here's the link: [Link]
Here's a youtube vid of it: [Link]
Note the difference is the case I'm ordering won't have a belt clip
Hi, does anyone know how to hook a ATT Tilt to '05 Mustang Shaker 1000 stereo? I'd prefer to not do the FM transmitter if possible.
I have an '06 Mustang with a shaker 1000 system. I use a media gateway from best buy that hooks into the back of the radio. I has an Ipod usb interface and a 3.5mm headphone jack. All I have to do is press the sat/aux button(AUX is the button on my stereo, some say SAT) When I get Home I will post the part number and brand. What color is your mustang?
reply
Hi, Thanks for the reply. Its Torch Red. Pics of it are here:

I think I found it. Is this what you have? http://www.icarkits.com/product_info.php?products_id=3411
That's it. It easy to install, you just have to take the center console out. It works well.
Nice car!
Check out my pics.

Did you get it done yet?
I used a P.I.E. adapter that fits into one of the sockets behind my Shaker 500. Then the car harness just plugs right into the P.I.E. harness... no splicing.
I hooked up the Tilt output on a miniusb-to-3.5mm adapter with built-in mic that I got (originally for T-Mobile G1). That way I can take calls using the stereo. Even on my convertible 'Stang it works very well. Just can't go 90mph with the roof down or your caller won't hear a thing you said ;-)
I mounted the phone to the stereo using a Panavise metal bracket... looks *very* clean and it's very sturdy. No holes drilled, connects to stereo bolts. The phone mounts to the black metal bracket using a generic PDA "vent" holder I found at Target. I ripped the vent clips off and used some small screws to fasten it to the Panavise mount... rock solid.
I have the extra cable wrapped behind the mount so that I can take the phone off the mount, stretch the cord out & place the phone on the passenger sun visor so my kids can watch movies from the back seat using the car stereo for sound. Works like a charm!
Every person who's seen it up close says the same two things: 1) How'd you do that? & 2) I'm gonna do that for my car!
This is a pic of my prototype... the final setup has less wire exposed and the adapter's mic facing the driver.

Don't bother knockin' a 'Stang.
Any car in the same class as the Mustang will be defeated. Mustangs start out with a fun little V6 and end with GT500's & Cobra-Jet editions that can easily POP-A-WHEELIE going down the track. No little-boy honda or corolla-on-crack can match that. Even a regular GT500 will go toe-to-toe with an M3, for about $10k less.
And you Moped & Bow-Tie boys have your days numbered.... the next gen powertrains come out next year! Let the battles begin (in a humane, legal sort of way... of course ;-)
Bah I'll keep my 19 yr old Taurus.
Hey, your Taurus is a very sturdy car! S.H.O. by any chance?
Our next family car will either be a Taurus or a Flex. The Sync system teams up with your Tilt via BT and works well or so I'm told.
If you want to mount your Tilt to your dash, try Pana-Vise for a VERY sturdy mount... it's the backbone of my setup.
Yes SHO FTW.
Today I moved my car stereo lower in the dash and mounted my Samsung Tab car-dock in the original stereo location.
Took me all of about an hour, cost me $10 (in addition to the dock I already had). I am fairly pleased with it.
I was glad to find that I did not have to extend any of the wires going to the original car stereo. They were plenty long enough to put the stereo down in where the little pocket used to be. All I had to do was cut the back of the plastic pocket out, and use the stock bolts to bolt through the plastic in to the body of the stereo. Part one done...
Then I used a piece of 2 inch wide steel bent in to form as a bracket for the Samsung dock. I mounted the new bracket to the original stock stereo mounting bolts. Then I cut a piece of black plastic to entirely close off the double din opening. This was hot glued and epoxied in to place from the rear so it is nice and clean. Part two done.
I then had to cut the last portion of the Samsung Tab mounting arm off. All I needed was the small portion where the dock actually bolts to it. This allowed me to still use the swivel to get the right mounting angle. The ONLY issue I had was that I wanted to mount it close enough to the dash that I had to cut a notch in the stereo bezel to accommodate the power cord to the dock. Not a big issue, and from the driver side its not visible at all.
I then mounted the dock to the bracket through a small hole I cut in the piece of black plastic I had mounted.
Originally, the TAB was mounted via the dock on top of my dash. I like this position much better!!!
Here is the end product.

Sorry, I meant to post this in accessories. Can a mod move it for me?
Does the tab tie into your stereo over bluetooth or a line out? Or do you just use it for navigation?
Works perfectly via bluetooth. I was having some skipping issues, but they were cleared up with the last update of Car Dock. They now turn off wi-fi when in dock, which is what was causing the issues.
Very nice setup. How does the navigation work on the SGT.? i.e. is there any delay or lag. are you on Edge when using the nav.?

Google Navigation works as well on the SGT as any other phone - better in fact due to the higher resolution of the Tab. Just needs a reasonable 3G signal - which isn't hard to find. For me it's the best satnav software out there.
I live in Southern CA, so there is no issue with getting a signal. The Navigation works perfectly for me. A couple years ago I spent $2000 for an indash navigation, DVD player. What a waste that was... Its amazing how technology has changed in just a couple years.
I now have full Internet, navigation, phone and multi-media capabilities in my dash AND its removable!
Very nice work. The scarf is a nice touch too.

Wow, it looks nice on your dashboard. I'll try to replicate this when the dock is available in my country (Thailand)
which car dock is it?

You cant see the two pictures in the original post?
Are you asking for a different angle? I dont think I understand...
I'm installing an HTC flyer in my car permanently where the radio would go (2DIN mounting), but kind of sad at the prospect of losing camera functions (video of dashboard interiors are boring).
So, what would be involved in removing the camera module and placing it somewhere else, as the dash for example? Would I just need to unsolder the camera module, solder on a whole bunch of cables, and connect them to the same contacts? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Alternatively, if a device has USB OTG capabilities, is there any way to make it talk to a regular USB webcam?
Discuss
Alot of research could go into what you're trying to do.......
However, I'd recommend just trying it and see what happens. Make sure your wires are all the same length.
So yeah.. In this situation, i think the Leroy Jenkins approach is appropriate.

PRICELESS!! lmao. @OP, awesome idea for the in dash flyer. Please post some completed pics!
have you thought about removing the camera from the back ad making "jumper cables" to put it up front? you might need something to make a housing for it to sit in the dash, but it would be better than writing a driver for it.

The thing is in adding(soldering?) 2 proper connectors to longer flex IMO, hard to do at home, but nothing is impossible. ^^
About OTG connecting - you'd probably use universal WebCam drivers from Ubuntu for eg. though the problem would be in powering that I think, WebCam has to be OTG compliant (with external power connector maybe?) or you'd need some special adapter, the rest is redirecting Android to use your webcam, but don't think it's hard comparing to other things.
I did this with a fascinate in my 87 BMW 325ic
I bought 2 extra cameras ( paid $16ea somewhere, cant remember off hand)
I failed at getting it to work myself as I suck at soldering.
However-
I had a friend take it into work and solder it in for me. We then took a light sensor from a 4th gen camaro , mounted it on my dash, ran the cam there, installed the phone and f-in-a . it was sweet.
this lasted for a full 3 weeks until something came undone and now the cam doesnt work. Ive switched back to the stock deck and just wired a bluetooth receiver into the tape deck, mounted a droid x down by the ashtray and it works. Not as great as what I had, but it works.
Point being, it can be done. and its pretty sweet when done right.
grab fried boards from ebay and start from there.
Wait some more weeks, cotula is developing usb host mode driver, and he has developed a working driver. Its for android. It will be available soon to public when he corrects the errors.
So u can simply plug in an usb cam to ur phone( providing only external power supplay is needed.) So u can do it with out bricking ur phone. Till then use it as a phone..

the xoom size
just need to trim the dash
check if the xoom fit
start with fiberglass
cut the fiberglass
making the front
i still need a lot of work i will add a phone base (defy) inside the tablet , need to wired a lot of stuff to charge and audio from both devices , add a mic for the phone without losing the OEM stereo
reposition the stereo and all the switch´s , buttons i remove from the dash ,
need to bondo the dash and lot lot lot of sanding
Exactly what i will be doing when the new ride arrives.. Will have to use a 7 inch tab though
Time to get PARANOID bout your ANDROID
Any updates? I'm always intrigued by xoom car/truck integration posts. I'd probably attempt something similar if my G8 didn't rely on the stock screen for HVAC control.
interesting post - will subscribe for updates
Today I will post the rest of the pictures I just need to wet sand to finish it

Are you planning to use an OTG adapter mounted in the bezel for USB device hosting? That would be icing on the cake.
Actually I did use the otg also a extra mic, charger, phone base, with charger and audio jack for calls
Apps, tasker, tablet talk, musicpro, waze, and many others
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
Also I forget , I'm gonna use a web cam for a reverse camera, just need to find the correct cable to turn the webcam on/off adding a relay
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk
ok lets continue
this is the modification to add my phone base a defy with a custom rom CM7
adding some fabric to avoid scratch
adding bondo and the charger and ogt and a lot of sanding
almost finish but need more sanding
testing some audio connection
adding the usb extension
taking apart a phone charger
taking apart a phone handsfree and remplazing the mic for one bigger
testing the color of the paint still need a lot of wetsanding
adding the new mic to the dash
im still working on the oem stereo adding the switch i remove from the stereo dash
i will add the pictures in a few hours
continuation
the audio and chargers installation
the audio connection phone/tablet/cd changer
the new stereo place and switch
testing the final mount
this is gonna be the phone place i add this cuz if i dont like to take my xoom one day i still can use my phone as head unit
this isn't finish i still need a lot of sanding the worst part and painting this paint is only cuz i get tired and wanna see how will look finish but is far to finish yet , need to add some extensions for the switch
so far the sound is great thanks to tablet talk i dont even need to see my phone anymore , and tasker allow me to turn on off the tablet when the car start
with tasker i add some profiles to turn wifi tether when the charger and audio jack in place on the phone
on the tablet i did more profiles , for day and for night
like turning the screen on while charging, change cpu , brith auto off etc ...
i still need to find the shell command to unmount a usb to adding to the profile but is not a big deal
all this is thinking to remove the audio jacks after i get a xoom dock right know is to expensive in my country to get one and the shippings are to high if i order in other place so until the price get low.
i will take apart a xoom dock and use the circuit to remove the outside jacks for the xoom
looking good - cant wait to see what it looks like 100% complete
