Hide/Prevent changes to the phone? - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

Hi
I am an administrator of a couple of phones that "ordinary" people uses. Some of these people just can't leave settings alone, installes his own application and then comes down and complain about the phone not working. I've had it.
Is there any way to lock down the hermes so that he just can read settings, transfer his activesync info and change that but not changing ANYTHING that is system related??
any product free or charged doesn't really matter, just curios to know if any software like that exists.

This looks like it might do what you're after:
http://www.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/kioskengine/?en

My best advice would be to install a backup application such as SPB Backup, complte your desired settings and then take a backup. Later when the person returns with junked device, hard-reset and restore the previously taken backup! That should be easy right?

I have actually tried that, but it doesn't quite do it. It doesn't always restore everything and so on...it is almost more work restoring than reinstall everything again!
The kiosk application might be what I am looking for

okay so what rom shall i look into for a beginner?
Well, that depends on what you want from your device. Since you asked about WM5 I'm guessing you don't want to go with WM6. If I was flashing I'd personnally go with the newest ROM available. There's lots of choices, you just need to read up on each of them. Some are plain vanilla, others have a great deal of customization built in. You may need to try a few to see what works best for you. The main thing is to READ,READ,READ everything you can find about flashing ROM's if you haven't done it before.
Start here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=285435
What you flash is really a personal choice. Are you unhappy with what you have now?
yea i am
it has alot of stuff that i dont want in it like the msn sign on etc etc, plus i know this phone can do alot more than what its currently being asked to do .
Since you say your just starting out I'd suggest you install you backup program of choice and spend some time dorking up your phone with all kinds of software. Some of it will work well, some won't. Some won't work at all and some won't play nice with each other. After you get comfortable killing and restoring your phone like its a casual occurrance you'll be ready for flashing. The main thing is you'll want to figure out what programs you really want to keep no matter what. You'll get to be a master of the hard reset. After about fifty of these you'll be glad you have everything you love saved and backed up to your storage card. Reinstalling a large number of your favorite programs and reregistering each and every one of them gets to be tedious after a while. Thats the beauty and ease behind the backup software. Back up alot. Then backup some more......
Just be aware that a backup will not restore a ROM, only reflashing will. You can generally get the stock ROM from the HTC website or various other linked sites.

Cannot Start Sprite Backup!

I am a paid registered user of the best backup program for WM, Sprite Backup.
I installed the latest version on my HD2. It installed fine.
But every time I try to run it, I get an error message--" a problem has occurred with sprite backup.exe"
Happens every time, even right after rebooting, with nothing else running.
(One time I made the mistake of clicking the "Send" button to report the mistake to Microsoft, and there was a never-ending hourglass, finally had to reboot. )
Has anyone here used Sprite Backup with the HD2?
Consider yourself lucky and use this chance to seek other backup applications. After using this program, and having it tell me my Daily backups were done properly, I tried a restore and found it could not read it's own data file, and the remote backups never took place.
So I am basically fuxored...
Thank you Sprite Mobile.
My email to tech support has gone unanswered, nor do I expect them to answer me. I pretty much just want a refund.

I agree completely. I purchased Sprite Backup a couple of months ago, having read reviews that praised it. Was already using Microsoft MyPhone to backup some stuff, but wanted a more complete solution (eg., ability to backup installed applications).
Backed up religiously (to PC and to phone's storage card), no errors reported while doing so. Tried three weeks ago to restore a backup file, received message saying something like "device doesn't recognize certificates". No phone number available to call Sprite, so I sent email to their "24/7 HelpDesk." That was my first rude awakening, because it took them five days to reply. We then went back and forth for a week. No resolution, was told in a final email that I should try reinstalling the program and that, other than that, there was nothing they would or could do. I'm investigating SPB Backup and other options -- whoever I choose next will be in the U.S., and they will at least have a phone number so I can talk to human! But you can bet that everyone I know with a Windows mobile phone is now aware that Sprite isn't a viable option.....

I'm not sure I agree with you.
I have used Sprite with several other WinMo phones, with no problems. I have only had a problem with the HD2.
I'm surprised you were even able to backup. I could not start the app at all. The only way I was finally able to backup, was to close the Sense UI, and reboot (without Sense). Haven't tried restoring yet on the HD2.
HD2 seems to have a lot of compatibility problems. Today I installed Sk Tools as well, newest version, which I have also paid for. Like Sprite, it installed fine, but will not start up correctly at all!

I hear your point, and I can't argue that the HD2 can be a compatibility-problem magnet. What I did after first experiencing my problem (and during that period where I was waiting for Sprite to respond to my first email to their HelpDesk) was Google the web for a solution to the certificate problem. During that search, I saw a bunch of complaints of the same problem for quite a number of other phones (some HTC, some not), and a consistent theme was that Sprite Support was essentially ignoring them. That fact is what bothers me most.
Also, if I were you, the only way I'd trust that backup that you finally got to work is by successfully restoring it on your device. I typically maintained at least two separate (one for Mondays, one for Fridays) backup files, which the program always characterized as "Backup completely successfully!". However, none of these would Restore.

Just to point out to you, that SPB software compan is not located in the US, but in Russia. (I don't know why, but much mobile software seems to originate in Russia. I think SK software (as in SK Tools) and Resco are also in Russia, others as well.)
Quite unfortunately, reaching a human being in the US (or anywhere) on the telephone, who is actually familiar with a product, and can actually help you, is an extreme rarity these days for any product, hard or soft. "Tech support" for most companies has become a pitiful joke.
----------
By the way, an update on my OP.
I reported that I was not able to start Sprite Backup on the HD, after having successfully installed it.
After removing Sense, and booting into plain Windows Mobile, I was able to start it and do a backup.
Since then, I have reinstalled Sense, and since then, Sprite could do a backup with Sense running as well.
However, nervous from reading reports here that Restore didn't work, although I didn't need a restore, I decided I'd better try restoring. (For if Restore wouldn't work, the backups would be useless.)
So, right after doing a full backup of everything (excluding the storage card, of course), to the storage card, I did a restore of that backup. I didn't do it by starting the Sprite application, but by clicking directly on the .exe file created by the backup. It took a while to start up, and I was getting nervous, after having read the reports here.
But then it did start up, and now the restore is completed, and looks like it went fine.
So, I'll keep using the app.
(I once used the SPB backup app though, years ago. Also a good app, and not as expensive. Not as many options though.)
Glad that things worked out for you. Thanks for the update.
I've never had problems with sprite backup. Ok, I think once, it wouldn't restore. But for the most part it has worked. I have never had problems restoring either.
If I had to go back and order again I would probably use spb backup since so many others recommend it, but I've been using sprite for about 2 years.
You can always try Lookout mobile. Its a security/anti-malware program that also offers data backup. Had it since a week or two after I got my HD2, everythings been great. But on stock ROM it may freeze. Did the first time I installed so I didnt try again until I got a new ROM. Been perfect ever since.

Making better backups

Today I use a combination of Titanium and Mybackup pro to do my backups/restores. It works pretty well, there are just some questions I have:
I would like to backup my phone settings (ringer volumes, vibration settings, security settings, etc.) - Is this backed up using Android settings in Mybackuppro?????
When restoring applications I would like them to restore to their backed up location (Phone vs. SD Card). I tried to select the option in Titanium to do so, but it didn't work. Any tips on getting that to work?
Is there anyway to backup touchwiz settings??? (widget locations, icon locations, etc.)
I think this is it for now.
I am bumping this as these questions are still needing answers please.
Bumping again guys. Please help!
I too originally purchased MyBackup Pro. It does a decent job, but it doesn't work as well as it should. I too have found that it doesn't restore everything you need it to. But, that's because it doesn't give you the kind of control that Titanium Backup does.
I finally bought Titanium Backup and started doing some reading on how to use it properly. As you play in the program, you are going to need to look up terms and read on how to properly use the features. It's just how it is. Remember, Android is running Linux under the hood. They really didn't intend the average person to get in there and get their hands dirty. That's why you have to ROOT your phone to even be able to get access to your Apps data.
I really hope at some point Android will get better about being able to do App Data backups! I would love it if there was an option to not only sync the apps that I have purchased (free or paid), but also the app data. Hopefully Google will include that some day. They're willing to backup all my picture for free to Google Plus, you'd think they would also do my App Data.
Here's some helpful instructions for Titanium backup. Enjoy!
Just type this in to Google Search.

[Q] GS4 Multi Window don't work.

At&t GS4 32GB version.
Multi Window not working.
It is checked (lit up green) in the setting (notifications area).
DID a long press of the back button.
Rebooted.
Tried everything, it don't work.
Could root have broken it?
Titanium Backup Broke it?
All I did was root my device to be able to use Titanium backup to restore all ym data from my GS3.
That data was...
My call log, SMS / MMS History.
A few Games and the data from them.
Wifi Settings
Call History.
That was it.
Andorid 4.2.2 that came with the phone.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Restoring that type of system data can cause many odd issues. This why it is never advised to restore any system data at all. Only user apps
W.T Nexus 4
Is there a better way to restore call logs, MMS/SMS messages, contacts and all the WIFI hotspots (passwords) I have saved?
That stuff is pretty important to me. I use the phone for business so to have every SMS message is super important. My call logs are important an d obviously my contacts are important. The few games I play on a regular basis are important too (but there are only 3 of them).
Can something like restoring that kind of data KILL multi window?
Contacts are backed up with your google account so those are not a worry. There are a few sms backup programs out there that when restored work properly but non that do mms that I remember. Your games are fine as that is user data and nothing system related. The call logs can be backed up with some 3rd party apps as well. As for the Wi-Fi spots I don't know of any that backup those. Yes it could cause these issues as each device and OS version can handle how these are stored very differently.

Possible solution to getting multi window working?
Your not gonna like the sound of this but most likely a factory reset and start from scratch. Make sure it is working and then go from there.

First of all, as far as I can remember all Call history, SMS/MMS and Wifi Settings, can be passed to the S4 via Kies, if I'm wrong, then just use the Samsung Smart Switcher, you can get this from the Samsung Apps, or at least in my case, inside the S4 box there were some instructions and a URL to go to do this. http://www.samsungsmartswitch.com
Second, once you get any annoying error on your phone, you don't have to many options to fix it, other than going the factory route, but for your information, if you use ODIN and the OEM Factory Rom that is on this site, you will install everything back to factory, but doing this won't affect any of your settings or Apps, it will just refresh all rest to factory all your system Apps, SO, just do this first (you can even do it on Kies, just use the Firmware Upgrade and Initialization option) and then Check for the Early Month Update, update your phone, then do the Smart Switch thing and you will be almost completely covered.
Just leave your re-root for the end, just in case. Good Luck.

Well I guess it came to that.....
Kies is a really cool app - I had no clue it was better than titanium backup.
No need to root I guess.
Kies would not restore official rom IT kept locking up after download.
I ended up using ODIN.
Took Two times then a DATA WIPE.
Then Kies to restore everything but my Multi Window is working.
Thanks...
But now I am wondering if a data wipe was really all I needed instead of redoing the ROM?

Glad that at least is working and you have your data restored on your S4. but just FYI, I use Titanium Backup PRO in all my devices, is great for backup all your apps, and then you can restore all of them with even the data, BUT when you are moving from a device to another, or even with teh same device, when you change Roms, it's not recommended to restore all data and system apps, next time just do the restore your apps option. I have successfully restored all System and Apps before, when only when I had a good backup of all o fit, and then screwed something up, so I just reinstalled same Rom or do a factory reset, then do the full restore, it can definitely save you a lot of work and time.

Just FYI, Google Account also backs up WiFi information (SSID + Passwords). I found this out surprisingly when I upgraded from an HTC EVO 3D to the GS 4. When I added my Google Account, it proceeded to restore my home screen wallpaper, my apps, my contacts, and my Wifi info.

Best Way to Back Up All Data and Apps Nexus 6P

I about to redo my phone completely and I still own Titanium Backup Pro, is that still the best way to backup everything or can I simply backups my files (photos, videos, PDF's etc...) and use Google's basic restore apps when I reboot my phone from stock?
I know TB is great but last time I used it, I felt there were some bugs and it couldnt restore some apps which was disturbing. Then in the end, I have no idea what is actually did and did not restore, a real PITA.
It also took forever and felt like it got stuck in some parts.
Are there any downsides to using Google apps restore feature? Not sure if that will also maintain all my game/app data.
I also read some good things about TunesGo Android Backup.

The Google apps restore has improved significantly since MM. I do keep TWRP Nandroid backups offline, but have not used them in ages. I use Google apps restore for all of my Play Store and System apps, and TiBu for the "non market" stuff... maybe ~30 apps? I zip the TiBu folder into a single file (Solid Explorer) and move it offline. When upgrading from 6-7 or 7-8, I just completely wipe the phone, flash a full image, let Google Play restore from the cloud. Then extract and use TiBu zip to restore the remaining apps. Icing is a Nova launcher backup to restore all the shortcuts and widgets, and my setup is 99% there in under one hour from a complete blank slate. I've also been experimenting with FlashFire to make ADB backups offline. Very slick backup tool, in addition to it's primary use of flashing monthly security updates. I have not yet restored a FF backup via ADB yet... I just keep one recent backup as a precaution. As for your other thread on rooting- I only see the upside. I don't see any downside. Android Pay not working irritates many, but I will never use that so not a concern. Why buy a Nexus if you're not going to unlock and root?

Awesome reply, exactly what I was looking for thanks!
So u gave a lot of info and I just want to summarize what I should do to redo my phone as cleanly and quickly as possible, but first can you tell me how you personally differentiate the non-market stuff for TiB? Meaning I have like 200 total apps, so just trying to plan a process here.

Lots of tutorials out there on how to properly wipe and install a fresh stock image onto a blank phone. Probably the best example can be found on the Google webpage where you download the full image. I use Google restore for all system apps plus the apps I have paid for at the Google Play Store. I use TiBu only for those apps from elsewhere that are not backed up or restored by Google restore. It's made easy by TiBu because after Google restore is 100% complete restoring everything it possibly can, I fire up TiBu and use the "Restore Missing Apps" option.
Can't wait to see the day where all the apps (Gapps too) stop asking things you already seen or chosen when you do a factory reset or change your phone.
Android Backup and Restore has improved a lot, but still has a long road to go. Probably in the future, you just change the Phone and everything, not just some things, are restored. All the little checkbox you ticked in each of the apps. (With "Settings" app, this is happening a bit at the moment, some settings are restored).
Examples: "Dark theme enabled in Tapatalk" / "Use" or "Background activity disabled for Facebook Messenger lite".

Ya seems like every app saves differently so thats why I laugh when people are like, whats the big deal, just redo your phone and only takes an hour.... um no. Maybe if you dont do much and use your phone to check email, calls, and texts and a couple of games but for me its an exhaustive process bec even after you think you restored, there are always some things in the subsequent weeks u find that wasnt restored, missing, or settings are all screwed up. Not a life breaker, but ya, someday maybe they will universally code settings the same way so a backup program can do something like what imaging does in Windows, although Android has many more roms and providers to deal with so u may need some additional steps anyways.
Yes it's a lot of work. For me is never an hour. It's like 3 hours after the android welcome assistant and then several days till I open app by app and setup the settings for each one of them.

I still use TiBi pro for backing app all of my apps. It's just quicker in my opinion. Immediately after flashing new images or roms, I just go into batch actions of TiBu and restore all missing apps with data. Takes about ten minutes and all my apps and data are restored.

Currently I have the 6P with open bootloader but just because by bank doesn't support android pay and I don't want to go through this android restore slow process.

You never had it freeze or not restore something properly? That is the one I am most worried about, its a highly frustrating process when an "automated restore" just doesnt finish the job after waiting over an hour, which is what happened last time I used it for my Galaxy S4, tried 3 times too, so I ditched it and used Google restore and dealt with all the settings after manually.

No sir. I've been running TiBu pro on my Nexus 6p since launch. I've flashed almost every factory image/security update after completing a full wipe before each flash, thus removing all of my apps and data along with it. TiBu pulled through every time. I also make sure to do a batch "redo" of all my backups prior to wiping/flashing the device so this way all my apps data are up to date when I restore them. I'd be lost with TiBu!
