Before you guys flame me for being a noob, I've really tried searching the forum for my problems and can't find it.
So my issue is that my phone will randomly drop calls - often in the first minute, or just randomly later in the phone call. According to my friends - it's different from a typical dropped call since when they lose me they suddenly get a busy signal, while on my end I get a call ended message. I have full service where I live and am not switching between towers.
It occurred a few times before any upgrades, but soft-resetting it would fix it. So I thought upgrading to WM6 or a cooked ROM or an upgraded radio might get rid of the issues of it permanently. None have, in fact, if anything, it's made it worse.
I originally upgraded to Custel 2.5 (following the mrvanx guide) with the associated upgrades in bootloader and radio seen in the guide. Since then, I've tried VP3G 3.62 and radio 1.54. Finally, after being frustrated, I went back to the ROM posted on the HTC site for AT&T customers and the radio 1.40 that it loaded back with it. Still, having problems.
Do you guys have any ideas of what the problem could be - is it hardware or software? I've only had my phone for 3 months, so should I try reversing the changes and send it in, but I have a feeling AT&T will just send it back saying it's fine or that the scratches on my case indicate a drop that has damaged it in a way that the warranty won't cover.
Well im by no means an expert on these forums or pda's but when i first got my 8525 i would have that very same problem. When I switched to vp3g's rom and radio 1.54.07 i quit having problems at all with it until i dropped the phone in the sink and then after it dried out on the concrete a few times. And actually AT&T/Cingular/whatever-they-wanna-call-themselves is pretty decent with warranty exchanges. If you tell them it wasnt dropped they dont charge u for a new phone if its scratched when they get it. first hand experience because i have sent one back to them that i HAD dropped and it got scratched to hell. no word was said about it. about all they will actually check is the moisture sensitive sticker. what i would suggest though before i went that far is even though you've reinstalled the OEM ROM another hard reset wouldnt hurt. Then if that continues to be a problem it may be a hardware issue. (again im not an expert). it really irritated me because when i called to complain about it i got the "we'll have a technician check out the area" followed by a call saying "the signal there is good" which i already knew because i always have a full signal and even when it dropped a call it had a full signal. hope i helped some.

Hi all,
After spending 2 days with my vario my dreams of a half-decent smartphone are shattered.
I've got a C500 which hasnt really caused me any problems in over a year, now 2 days after having a vario i'm almost pulling my hair out.. can this phone possibly have been released in such a bad state or is it just mine?
For starters it crashes, not now and then, but like it's a hobby of the vario's, i dont think i can leave it for an hour, come back and find it hasn't hung in some form.
Sometimes i have to do a soft reset, sometimes, i can press the power button, get the screen to light up but can't do anything. Sometimes I get icons but when I click them i'm told the shortcut doesnt exist.
Ooh another thing it seems to like doing is randomly going into flight mode, and one really good crash was when i called it and the source phone could hear the ringing but the vario was just sitting there doing nothing.
So is it just mine or is this the most unstable phone the UK has ever seen? Is it worth me asking for a replacement, or just flashing the k-jam/qtek rom over the t-mobile one? Is there a way to backup my t-mobile rom and flash it back should i find the qtek/kjam rom does the same?
I've tried hard-resetting then cancelling all the t-mobile gubbins that loads from extended rom, but that didnt make any diference.
Any advice gratefully appreciated
Thanks
Personally, I'd say get T-Mobile to replace it! Unless you've installed a buggy piece of 3rd party software (but if you did, you wouldn't on here complaining about the phone you'd be complaining about the software, right?).
I also have an MDA Vario. I haven't touched the Extended_ROM (was going to, had a look and decided it was running fine so don't mess with it).
It's solid as a rock. As per a thread on howardforums asking how many times per day have I soft-resetted the phone and my answer was an average of zero.
I hard reset it on the day I bought it (after installing GPRS Monitor which knackers the backlight turning back on after sleep) and took the battery out after T-Mobile decided to disconnect me from their network (at their support line's request).
Anyway, it's on 24/7, never needs a reset of any kind, gets mobile emails via ActiveSync and is generally a wonderful piece of kit!
List what apps you've installed (even if they're T-Mobile supplied ones from CD) since buying the phone as there may be something buggy there. If not, definitely get T-mobile to replace it as it's certainly not a crap model (mine is absolutely fantastic).
Thanks Andy,
I've literally not installed anything, i'm just about to install pocketcommander but that will be the first thing i've actually installed. I've hard reset the phone this morning and it's already hung once on me (
I'll give tmob a call and see if they can send me another out today or something
Yeah, then you've definitely got a knackered phone. They should replace it (how long have you had it) without problems.
Hope you enjoy the replacement, they really are a great bit of kit
Well just had my first ever dealings with tmobile supoprt and it's as bad as the phone
They say because my contract/phone is only 3 days old i need to go back to the people i bought the phone off to get a replacement, problem is they'l want me to send the whole boxed thing uip and all the box etc is at home since i work away during the week
That's got to be faulty, like others have said.
WHen I bought mine, (T-Mobile shop in Leeds), I was told that if it was faulty within the first 28 days, there'd be a straight replacement issued immediately.
Don't accept anything less.
For what it's worth, I always try to be exceptionally pleasant when returning things rather than going in "all guns blazing"; it gets results a lot more often than the "I know my rights" approach. Of course, when it all comes down to it, the "i know my rights" approach might be necessary, but hopefully it shouldn't be.
The phone is superb, so stick with it even tho it is a bit of hassle for you.
good luck!
hi there no problems with my vario either. seems to work fine. no soft/ hard resets needed so far. have had it for 10 days. only thing is after the xteended rom instals there is a file called canned text in words which opens up in a crazy language. does not go on hard resets. but does not cause a problem either. any ideas on what this file is. have othar vario users noticed this file. please help.

may not be relevant to your problem, but if skype is installed on yours from the hard reset install, it may be worth removing, on the k-jam as soon as i removed skype, reseting stopped happening
For no apparent reason on Saturday, my touchscreen decided to stop working. I was running the latest WWE iMate ROM, with the .10 Radio installed over the top.
I tried soft reseting a few times, with no luck - so moved onto a hard reset as well. That failed
Having seen someone post a link to a proper T Mobile download for the original ROM for the phone, I thought it best to try that. Unfortunately it doesn't fix the problem, but at least has put my phone back to a state where I can cheerfully give it to T Mobile and claim on the 12 month warranty.
I'm dropping it into my retail store today... but am disappointed it has only lasted 3 months before dying.
It hasn't been dropped, water damaged or anything like that - just simply gave up the ghost.
my touchscreen sporadically stops working (mda pro), but then will start again, if I rub the wider end of the Stylus across the screen quickly a few times.
I'm contemplating taking it back, let us know how you get on with T-Mobile.
Do t-mobile UK give a replacement unit?
Well mine's gone into the store today. Reckon I'll get something back from them by the end of the week. They reckon 5-7 days turnaround, but the phone won't even be sent offsite until tomorrow. (They have collections 2 or 3 times a week I think...)
Its a far cry from Orange where, with Orange Care, having stopped working Saturday, it would have been replaced on Sunday.
Luckily I still have my Orange C500, so I unlocked it, put an iMate ROM on it, and inserted my T Mobile SIM.
No question that it'll be repaired or replaced - but if you rely on the device, a week (or more!) is a long time to be without it...
Had I had the T Mobile equivalent of Orange Care, it wouldn't be sorted any quicker - so at least I can be happy I didn't waste my money with that.
I did try slightly flexing the screen and repeated tapping to try and get it to work again, but no joy. Perhaps the screen IS the weak link afterall, despite me religiously closing it up clamshell before putting in my pocket etc.
I had sent a phone in for repair, which was then said to be unrepairable and so I was given a replacement niki (however the replacement was a refurbished one).
Its only been a week or so but I have had major problems with calls. Most of the time I cant make or receive calls even though the signal bar has two or three bars. The phone says its dialing but it doesnt and ends the call automatically. If I ring my phone it goes straight to voicemail! Note that I said "most of the time" because my phone calls do go through soemtimes but thats like once every 20 or so tries or if I make a phone call immediately after a soft reset or just get lucky!
The other functions of the phone work fine. I have done a hard reset thinking it was something I installed but the problem is still there. Done another 4 hard resets (each time trying something different like taking the battery out before the custom orange stuff is installed) but with no change.
I did a search and came across another thread but it wasnt really solved and blamed it on S2U2. Obviously S2U2 cant be the cause for me since the problem is there even after a hard reset. (http://forum.xda-developers.com/archive/index.php/t-393077.html and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=387615)
Im thinking it could be that the radio version is old (since it is a refurbed version) and also I remember reading about poor signals some time ago which was solved by changing the radio version (and is also probably why I didnt have this problem with my original niki).
Note: I have also tried the sim in another normal phone (samsung e900) and it worked fine so this is definately a problem with the touch dual.
A little bit of info:
Im with orange in the Uk,
the ROM version is 1.31.61.10 with a ROM date 10/30/07
and the Radio version is 1.58.16.27.
(Also...I havent done a radio update because I am still under warranty but I would like to know if it could be causing the problem or if it is a hardware problem).
Thanks for reading this long post (didnt think it would turn out so long, lol), but ANY help or advice will be appreciated.
well it sounds like a bad signal, so unless you want to unlock yor phone and try the modded sedna radio (best) id just send it back and complain loudly
So back in the days of the HD, i was a proud owner of one with no problems whatsoever. Then i sold it and i bought a HD2. My girlfriends phone broke 2 weeks ago, and a friend of mine had a spare HD that was only used for couple of weeks so i decided to buy it from him. Since that day all hell has broke loose.
The major problem of the phone is the reception. Most of the times you can see that you have 2-3 bars, and if someone tries to call you, he gets the This user's phone is switched off. The weird thing though, is that you get the missed call text almost immidiately. Another problem is it takes 10-15 seconds to connect to someone else, or the call drops after 30 seconds. Its a real pain in the ass, since we cant call her anymore most of the times.
So what i did was to read around about the problem and i discovered i wasnt alone. What i did was to SU the phone and flash the 1.16 xperia radio which supposedly fixed the whole thing, but to my surprise, this wasnt the case. I read the thread on the HD forum, but it was has stopped at the middle of 2009. So is there a possible solution to the problem, or should i give the phone back to my friend ? - Warranty has expired so getting it back to service is out of the plan .-
I would find it rather helpful if someone tried to help me with that, or even pinpoint the solution.
Best Regards,
Sedde
Update the RADIO version 1.17, and instal to the RILphone last version 1.15
This work very well in the blackstone.
I will try that, but i doubt this will change anything, since i had updated the radio to 1.17 a week ago.
I turned on my phone last night, pressed the camera icon in the list of programs and it disappeared and hasn't come back since?????
Then went to the picture and movie tab and pressed the camera tab (both for taking picture and movie) and nothing happens, no camera launches.
I've had the phone sitting in the cupboard for days and it's cold where I live so I wonder if it's possible that the camera hardware has frozen and the icon disappears because the system cannot detect working hardware?
I don't know but my phone is out of warranty and I am worried.
Would flashing a new ROM help do you think?
normally your phone should not be out of warranty yet, since htc offers a 24 months warranty.
and if the camera worked with your rom before, changing the rom should not be necessary, but maybe a radio/rilphone upgrade would help or a hard reset.
Thanks for the reply
I've emailed the local distributor of my phone (bad reputation for replies) who paralell import it from singapore so I might be out of luck.
Done several hard resets and also warmed the phone up to see if the camera hardware was maybe stuck from the cold but no luck.
Tried to burn a new rom (The EnergyRom looked good) and the software keeps complaining that it lost communication with the phone so I can't even do that. Tried 10 times already.
So, I guess I have to wait for the supplier but they said the warranty is only one year.
afaik htc generally offers a 2 year warranty, so they are probably the ones, you'd want to contact about that issue, but before actually sending it to them, make sure to flash back the stock rom, radio and spl.
As I said above, I tried burning a new rom but the software keeps complaining that it loses communication with the phone so I've given up.
Thanks for the suggestions though.
I absolutely agree with Chef_Tony.
You've tried enough to exclude everything. It must be a hardware issue.
I think you can check the production date via the sn below the batt. I would just go ahead with HTC and call them, and NOT your local dealer.
You can also open a ticket online but from my experience that is a waste of time since they will start asking stuff to do and email them again.
HTC provides 24 months of warranty in most areas and the sn will be enough for them to decide if it is warranty or not.
Also do not mention the custom roms as that will void your warranty, even if the issue was there on the stock rom!
So go back to everything stock, everything that you need is in the sticky on the rom page, and give HTC a call.
The ROM is a stock one. I mentioned in my above post that when I tried to burn a new one that the phone lost comms so I never could get a new rom on to test if the camera would come back so I am still stock.
HTC mentioned all the same things you guys did.
Spoke to my supplier, looks like I have to send this back. Damnation!!!!!
Okay, made a few mistakes about trying a new rom but under severe pressure since my father died so I can't comprehend much at the moment.
Will try all the steps later when I am less distressed.
Sellers have gone, phone is worse.
Just to update people, this post can be locked now.
Blue Fly Mobile are gone, nobody can find them. They told me to send the phone back for repairs and when I was just about to, they turned up missing.
Web site is gone, no contact anywhere and I read in many forums about their bad rep.
Camera still gone. Battery may last a day if that. Phone randomly cuts of calls when I make them or when people make them to me.
Looks like I will be waiting for the new Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 when it hits OZ as it's better for my eyes.
Now, how to convince my wife that I absolutely need it???
