This is not as trivial as you might think. The USB port somehow managed to become loose (maybe because I naturally have to plug and unplug the USB cable at the office and in the car all day long) and so I could not charge or sync the unit. T-Mobile US wouldn't touch it...because it's a T-Mobile UK phone! I took it to a local cell phone repair shop, and the service tech there soldered the port back onto the motherboard (for $50). But the unit still won't charge or sync. He has agreed to seek a warranty repair, etc., and has various vendor contacts. But this is a real nuisance compared with having T-Mobile US handle the whole thing. I e-mailed HTC support, but they haven't responded yet. I'm wondering if anyone else here in the US has had a similar experience and knows what to do. My repair guy is competent, but this is the first Universal he's worked on. I do have everything backed up, so that's not an issue.

The local repair guy failed--he used too much solder and destroyed a microswitch (all while charging me for $50). I searched for hours on the Internet and finally found www.pocketpctechs.com. I shipped my MDA Pro to them overnight ($60, ouch), and they cleaned up the previous guy's work, resoldered the USB port correctly, upgraded the ROM, and ran all the diagnostics. The cost was $60 plus $25 for the microswitch plus shipping back ($28). I got the unit back and everything is working fine (even faster than before). The only drawback is that it's no longer under the factory warranty; the PocketPCTechs warranty is for 90 days.
Oh, and I got rid of the Krusell leather case and purchased a PDAir aluminum case. Much safer!
Well ladies and jerks, I regret to inform you that my MDA is completely dead. I was in a car accident the other day and it went flying through the air and when I grabbed it off the floor of my car the USB charge plug was loose and had trouble connecting to the computer but still worked. Since then I had put a drop of super glue in there to hold the plug still and everything was fine untill this morning. My phone was left off with no battery in it untill the glue dried and still, everything was fine.
Now this morning when I went to grab my phone it was completely frozen and had 1% of battery life left so I soft reset and plugged the phone in and it was charging fine. I connected it to the computer and it would not connect at all. Now after playing with the cable a bit to get it to connect to the computer, the charge port is completely dead. It will not even let it charge with the charger and the little silver piece inside the plug is falling out.
Does anyone here have any idea what I should do to save my Wizard? I fear it may be the end for it.
Here's the big problem though. My device is CID unlocked and still has the TNT.1437 firmware on it so my warrenty is completely void. T-Mobile will not send me a handset exchange like this.

t-mobile wouldn't send you a warranty replacement even if you had the official windows mobile on it. that is because, after you read the terms and conditions of the warranty, it does not include and in fact states quite clearly that 'excessive' use of the usb cable resulting in damaged charging port will not be replaced.
i realise this is not very helpful, so allow me to be helpful!
download the wizard service manual, if you PM me your email address i can email you a copy of one
what you will have to do is first obtain a new mini usb port from ebay or somewhere similar, i will try to hunt one down in america for you
following the service manual, you need to dismantle your handset, use some sort of rubbing alcohol (nail varnish remover) to get rid of the super glue you put on, first try to re-solder the old connector back onto where it came, or if not solder on the new one after removing the old one.
to be honest, you dont have anything to lose, but you could gain a working mda again!

t-mobile will certainly wont give u warranty replacement. It happened with me once also and only way out was ,I took it to a mobile repair shop and got the usb connector replaced for very nominal price.
duke_stix is right,get a mini usb and solder it. If u can do it,very well or take it to a techy to do it properly.
Once it's repaired it will be as good as new,goodluck

Good advice except don't use rubbing alcohol, it damages plastic. Use adhesive remover instead. (At my hospital we use little adhesive remover wipes similar to the alcohol prep pads.) We are told to use this method when cleaning adhesives from plastics and it works.

Thanks. Have you had any luck trying to find a service manual? I have been looking but with no success...
Well I managed to find a wizard service manual written in English for the US and got my MDA taken apart correctly without damaging it(I hope) only to find that all 9 contacts for the USB port are completely severed. Unfortunately I don't have the soldering skills to fix this on my own and there are no local repair shops where I can get it fixed seeing as how I am also out of a car...(see first post) so I am back to a Razr... UGH.... Anyways, I will remain an active member of the community and continue to help others with issues they may be having and help others flash roms because I found that I enjoy helping others.
I will, however, be leaving for a period of time in a few months because I am being deployed and most likely will not be returning with a Wizard but an HTC TyTN II. Don't worry though, I won't forget my friends back here in the Wizard forum( I know too much about these things to just pack up and leave now...)

But just another idea popped in my mind,if u can manage to get mini usb port than u can take it to any electronics repair shop, like tv,radio or any pc repair shop,it can be soldered,since u say u have the service manual u can show them the circuit layout,they can fix it.
yet,if u happen to have any sort or make of mobile (Motorolla,Nokia,samsung) which is pretty old and spent,of which u got no use,c if it has a mini usb port,usually every mobile does have it,and it has 9 connectors,take it out and get it soldered to ur mda.
Well, since its gonner,there's no harn in trying,

Thats a good idea, but I will probably just end up buying a new one off ebay for my girlfriend and play with hers all the time and then I already bought a TyTN II for myself.

About your wizard, there are several ways to connect electronic components these days. If an adhesive was used, forget about it. If it was truly soldered, nothing can be easier! You can do it yourself (make sure to get a bulb vacuum for removing old solder and a modern soldering gun). It is so easy, in fact, that a authorized repair facility may do it for you for cheap! And you could always mail it to them, too.

My MDA will charge fine through the USB cable, but will not sync/connect -- it's not even appearing in Device Manager.
Does anyone know if this is definitely a hardware issue, presumably involving the USB port?

well, I think I may have accidentally signed my wizards death warrant...
I dropped it at work today, and at first, everything looked fine, still worked, so I figured it was ok.... well, I was wrong, when I got home, I plugged it into the charger, and it wouldn't charge. tried another charger, still nothing... I opened up the back case, and the mini usb connector was snapped off the board.... needless to say, I had a lovely string of expletives...
The question now, is there any way to fix this without replacing the board its connected to?
For now, I'm gonna hafta go buy a new phone... this sucks!
I saw a thread yesterday, something to do with saving a dying breed, there was a guy in there that said he had loads of the usb bits, post might have been old but worth a shot...

Its repairable,if you have good experience with electronics and gadgets and also have knowledge and worked with fine soldering,get hold of the service manual and can repair yourself.Otherwise take it to some Mobile repair shop,they can do it,no big deal.
Did the same thing. The usb on the wizard is honestly not soldered on well at all(mine was a definite cold solder joint). You may have just broken the solder and not the leads from the usb plug that go to the board. I, unfortunately, kicked mine while it was plugged in and broke the leads all together. I had my brother take an old phone he had with a mini usb plug and swap it out in no time. Long story short you can now swing my phone by it's usb cable, although I wouldn't recommend that!

well, its temporarily fixed(till this weekend, when I'll have the time and patience to solder it....
I used some automotive goop(really thick and heavy glue, I use it to glue everything...)to re attach the mini usb. this stuff sticks to anything and dries rock solid! The phone charges, but the computer is telling me that it cant recognize it. Hell, Im just happy that all I need to do is solder the damn thing on.... I thought I killed my beloved MDA!
Everything was absolutely fine earlier this afternoon (then the phone got a bit hot while riding in my car) and now, It is not being recognized by active sync or any power sources. The amber light doesn't light. It has happened before but then "fixed" itself. Anyone have any experience with this? This has happened both with the original ROM and the AP rom I am running, so I don't know that it is a software based problem. Any ideas? (Yes, I have it turned off, I have pulled the battery out as well, the USB feels no different than it did before).

Are you under warranty? Since this sounds like a recurring hardware issue I'd get it replaced. I've never had this issue, even when I left it on the dash of my car for an hour this summer, directly in the sun (by accident). The screen protector bubbled up and it was almost too hot to hold, but it started right up and hasn't had any problems.
Have you tried a hard reset?
Definitely no warranty (this is one that I did the screen replacement on and worked flawlessly for over a week with no problems. It did this before the screen was broken as well.) I noticed that it does feel a bit loose (the USB) so I am opening it up and going to check the solders. I know I'm crazy for doing this but it's out of warranty and it is already broken, so.... why not? And yes, I've done a hard reset and it still is giving me fits.

All solder joints seem good, no inordinate resistance, nothing out of the ordinary... the problem is further up the stream I am guessing.... so right now, it looks like I'm down my Advantage. May just end up selling it off for parts and getting a Diamond or some such for a replacement (can't afford another X75xx series phone right now...)... Brand new screen on it, and everything worked fine for a week but I think something in my car fried it... because my S621 died the same way recently... and my Asus PND fried as well....and all of them had one common thread. Being plugged in to my car for recharging purposes most of the time.

I fell in the not-so-rare problem of the broken microUSB female plug on the motherboard of my HD2: the phone won't charge or sync at all.
After searching around, I found that quite a few people have gone into my same trouble, because the sync plug is directly soldered on the mainboard and is also the phone part that gets most of mechanic stress during the device's lifecycle.
In a few words: seems that almost all phones will eventually break.
I tried with HTC repair but they refused to repair it both under warranty and under paid repair.
I don't want to throw away my phone after I spent 550€ for it!!! I would like to find a way to revive it!
I currently have two options:
Replace motherboard by myself or with the help of an expert technician
Buy a Powermat charger to charge the phone again
Third option could be buying a Chinese external charger I found somewhere supplied with 3 spare batteries, doing cold swap of each battery when one discharges: not a smart option.
I can't currently find a motherboard for replacement, since the only one on eBay that the seller doesn't refuse to ship to Italy is software-bricked, and I don't have the tools needed to unbrick it.
Option 2 allows me to avoid opening the phone and avoid potential disasters, but it won't allow me to sync the phone via USB. Not even to HSPL it (I love running Android dual boot sometimes when I need to run a certain program unavailable for WP6.5/7).
So, since I really need to synchronize the phone with my computer's Outlook for Calendar and Contacts, and after telling you about my current options, what do you suggest me to do?
Do you think it's possible to sync to WMDC using Bluetooth? (I read that wifi is not an option)
Or, do you know how could I unbrick a motherboard without buying expensive devices? I can travel easily around my country.
I'm open to almost any idea, thank you!!Buying a new phone at its brand-new price is not an option

Warranty refused because they say the defect is unrepairable.
Initially, when they refused warranty repair I thought "OK, it could be wear..." but when I saw the photos of how the plug is soldered to the mobo, I found it's a design disaster!!!! Even I know that the plug accumulates so much mechanical energy during lifetime that if it's not strengthened properly that energy will make the very small solderings crash. This is also why keys are not physically embedded on the mobo!!! You know you could break the keyboard because of wear
HTC then asked me to send the phone for paid repair but again the repair lab refused for unrepairable damage!! Incredible!!!

Also, I just found that plugging the battery again and doing a hard reset shown that the touchscreen is not working anymore!!!!
I couldn't even sell the phone for spare parts once the digitizer is broken (by the way, not even a single broken pixel ever!!)
They sent me a mail today, "we are investigating"

Ya HTC can be so stupid about that sometimes. It's funny on Sprint they would have switched out the phone no questions asked, but with GSM they don't want to do anything for you.

Man it sounds like HTC is giving you a load of crap, sucks to hear stories such as yours. HTC should just exchange your HD2 for you in m,y opinion.
You asked about how to get a main board debricked, I just sent you a PM with some information on that.
Oh and "we are investigating", just what is it to investigate. Your HD2 is malfunctioning because of a hardware issue and is still under warranty, they should replace it.

Just to tell you what it finished like.
HTC ultimately replied me "this device won't ever be accepter for repair".
I called a lawyer for that, because I just found that when I powered the phone on, the touchscreen was gone, and I have proof that the touchscreen was still working when I gave them the phone
