Wow.... just Wow.
10 minutes ago i was on the balcony of my building here looking at my phone checking an email, when a friend who was talking to me got rather physical with his talking and accidently swung his hand into mine, causing my lovely Hermes to fly over the balcony and land approx 20ft below onto cold hard concrete (all this happened in slow motion obviously)..
the battery and back flew of in opposite directions and we both stood there looking over the balcony with our mouths open.
well i went down and put it back together (just the battery, stylus and battery cover came off)
as i came into the building again i thought i might as well try turning it on but there wouldn't be a chance in hell it would work..
but
it
DID
it turned on... and the screen wasn't cracked or even marked. i thought, well maybe the touch sensitivity is dead.... again, no it was fine. ok maybe I'll try the phone... :O whoa.. it ALL seems to be ok.
considering me and a few of my mates have accidently killed thier Wizards merely by farting near them (ok slight exageration but you get my drift) i must say i'm very impressed with the robustness of the Hermes.
i'm also bloody glad its working cos i cancelled the insurance pack on it the other day too!
Care to give more details on.. the cover (any means of protection) you had on it, and point of impact (e.g. the part which your phone first touch the ground - look for the area that is messed up the most).
From what it seems, it is likely to be luck. Dont try it again And put up a sign, 'Kids, dont try this at home' at your post above.
yeah i know its just luck. but its a good advert for the hermes robustness
no protection. other than a crappy screen protector which would have made no difference.
point of impact was pretty much exactly the little round hole bit on the bottom right on the back.
no need for a dont try this at home. if anyones dumb enough to copy then they deserve all they got coming to them!

Yes... well.... It's lunch hour, but when we finish that bit of light entertainment we will deal with "thefunkygibbon"
Then we'll see the goodies (in-joke )

Hermes are amazingly durable, but I think dropping them off a building and them still working is luck.
You should be seperated from your Hermes, since you obviously have a complete disregard for it.. Blasphemy...
my hermes has dropped 4 times from about 1m to 1m vertical+60cm in horizontal.., three times into the the original case..
- The first time the left keyboard slide doesn't "click" when opened for 3 days.. now it's ok o), 1 corner damaged. (with cover)
- Second time, this time without case, the keyboard, opened, is swell at the center.. just fix the lateral keyb joints.
- 3rd and 4th time, with the case, the second and third corners goes out (scratches) and, maybe for the use, the pen is easy to pull out (the first 15 days was VERY HARD to remove)
Maybe at the end of the year, or i change the cover, or buy a new pda

You are even worse than thefunkygibbon. Please consider yourself lined up for a session as shown above.

congrats on... your unkillable phone. You should donate it to the developers for a scientific study.
now i know what to throw at that damn guy who's stalking my girl.. ahhaha!
I must say they are suprisingly robust. I droped mine from mike 1-1.5 meter hight around 8 times in the pub before I replaced it (camera broke). At worst the keyboard pops up so you have to press it back in. No major scratches or anything. Then one day the camera just broke so I now have a new one which I havent dropped yet... It still has the same **** issues as my first which I thought first was caused by me dropping it but apparently not.
I am proud to say I have never, ever, dropped any of my cell phones, and especially not my Hermes. I would probably take a dive to land underneath my Hermes if I did end up dropping it!
Dropped 8525 Stories
I had my 2 day old unprotected Cingular 8525 in my golf cart cup holder. It was about 25 degrees out and we were traveling full speed on a concrete pathway when we hit a speed bump. In slow motion, of course, my 8525 rose out of the cup holder and slammed into the concrete pathway, from about three feet in the air, and slid about 10 to 15 feet screen down. The battery cover flew off and the battery came out.
Low and behold, there was not a scratch or any damage to the phone. Everything still works great to this day (7 months later). I have had several minor drops tot he ground since then as well.
What a great phone!!!

it just so happens, that my Trinity(6 months old) decided that it likes water, and forced me to sit it in a cup of water in my cars cup holder. i looked at it about ten minutes later, and after yelling some vulgarities at it, and myself, i immediately popped out the battery.
do you guys think this device will come out alive? btw, it went speaker side down in the water... and believe it or not, the trinity can hold ALLOT of water.
if it doesn't come out alive, anyone interested in some trinity parts?
My friend also got a s620 (tmobile branded), and im kinda jealous at what he can do with it... nes games, snes... aim blows... crazy fast test messaging... i was thinking maybe i should one up him and get the cavalier... why is there no thread for the s630? and is it worth it? does it have the same possibility of crazy death scroll issue the s620 could suffer from? any other thoughts?
thanks for any input...

10 minutes.... I don't even think that you can hold your breath under water for that long - not to mention delicate electronic devices....
You did the right thing poping out the battery immediately. Hope that no one called you during its swimming and you didn't touch any buttons after it finished.
Now, what you can do it very limited - you may want to disassemble it - at least open up the case, and then use a hair dryer to blow it for an hour. After that, put it in a box together with some solid state dehydrants for few days.
And pray...
There are cases of Wizard swimming (diving actually) for hours and yet came out well, after the opening up and drying process. There is still hope.
Depends what it was swimming in!
Coffee and Coke are bad Ordinary tap water is also bad because the impurities (calcium etc) will eventually form some microscopic crystals on the MB tracks. Distilled water is best, but I presume you weren't drinking that
Try & disassemble as much as possible, and leave to dry naturally in a warm place for 2-3 days- dpn't be tempted to 'try it out' before that.
Can you claim on your household insurance?

meh.
well... i guess the good news is that i have filtered water.... im not talking brita either... im talking huge filtration units in the basement that look like big ol' helium tanks. my water is clean... either way, i don't happen to have any solid state dehydration material handy.. unless were talking about silica gel beads... in which case i have about 8 pounds of it. a drawback to this is that it spews dust all over the place that sticks to everything. i was told to soak it in distilled water, but ive seen what water does to lcd's and touchscreens... they get milky white, and don't work. id rather dip it in isopropl alcohol, swish a few times and spit. and is to praying, i'm not very religious ;p
thanks guys.
Well I do not really know about the trinity and for sure I wish that it has some water resistance, cause things like that happen all the time, but I had my Samsung WEp200, bluetooth in the washing machine inside my shirt's pocket for 1 and half hours in full wash, and after I took it out, it was still working......I am actually talking through that righ now....
Refering to the post above regarding the 'water' the phone is in, if my memory is serving me right, it is lake water, the diving Wizard went to.
Anyway, I seriously not sure if swimming phone happens a lot.. but if you do, you need to get those waterproof phone

Recovery!
wow...
i never thought it would survive. it did. after being submersed in water for 10 minutes... it had bits of corrosion on the board cause there is a small backup battery onboard, via high voltage soldering tacked to the board... anyway... thanks to that bettery, it almost killed everything for me.
this saved me:

i ran the main board under the spicket and scrubbed the everliving **** out of it. then i blew it off with an air compressor and let it sit for 2 days. i put it all back together with one screw left, and it booted up! sadly though, it had a kinda 3d effect cause the water got into the lcd layers.... so i pulled that apart( all the layers are on the back of the lcd starting with mirror, not the front). since i was working in a wood shop, it was a bit dusty :/ and i got a tid bit of dust on the layers and it looks nasty... ill get it later with latex gloves and alcohol... blew the layers off and dried them, and it looks great!
just so you know... the lcd is probally the most time consuming peice to take apart and put back together simply because it has 8 different layers that need to be cleaned, if water gets into em... lol..
guess the moral is, don't put your 600.00 phone in water.
Congratulations man! It's really a miracle for you

i was kinda disappointed that it worked.. i was looking for another reason to blow 600 on a cavalier s630... scratch that.. i have a projector to pay off... rofl.
its suprise what works after dropped, i've dropped atleast 3 mobiles in the bath ect lol, they still worked after a good dryin out!
Just got back from a week in the bush. My new HD2 got knocked off my belt at security in the airport.....
Now the screenis shattered.
Strangely enough, everything still works, the touch screen, GPS, accelerometer, everything.
Only problems are :
1. I keep slicing my fingers on the breaks.
2. Glass fragments in my ears whenI make calls.
Postscript: The phone is now at REPAIRER A in Perth , Australia having a new screen fitted. Since it's not a warranty issue, I'm damned if I'm waiting on Telstra to fix it.
In preparation for getting it back, I've bought TWO new rubber housings for it!
Ah yes, the broken mobile phone....
There was going to be a picture here.... but the fotum wont let me post one!
Having dropped this sucker at the airport, I was pretty keen to get it repaired pronto.
Enter REPAIRER A, who announced that such a repair would cost $280 and take 1-2 days.
That seemed a pretty good deal, so I dropped the phone off and paid my minimum call fee.
24 hrs later, I got an email stating that my HTC DIAMOND (?) (that's the WRONG MODEL) was WAITING ON PARTS!!! A phone call confirmed it, a week to a week and a half.
7 days later I enquired via email how it was all going....would the phone be ready before I leave for Japan?
"Not sure, at least 5 more days, we'll get back to you... "
Enquiries with REPAIRER B revealed THEY had parts IN STOCK and could fix it in three hours, albeit for $400.
I lost no time in collecting my phone from A and taking it to B.
On the drive from A to B I recieved SIX emails from A:
- "It's not the screen, we're waiting on a flexible cable."
- "Ooops, no that's wrong, it IS the screen."
- A standard "your issue has been escalated" email.
- A "You job is now complete" email.
- A 'Please pick up your phone" email (it was with me on the car) along with a "there's a demurrage charge if you don't pick it up on time" clause
- An INVOICE for the inspection fee.....
Meanwhile, REPAIRER B displayed the new screen for my phone, in it's bag, when I arrived. I was then told I could come back in three hours....
Two hours later, they called to confess that the replacement screen was DOA and they had to order a new one.
Latest pickup date is 3pm TOMORROW.
To be continued....
just so you know, they want more time with you phone because they are probably fu(king around with it at their shop.
Make sure to get a screen protector when you get a new screen, I'm pretty sure my screen is still in one piece due to mine having one!

In TWELVE years of PDA use, this is the FIRST time I've ever brojen a screen.
Hopefully, back tomorrow,,,

the other pda phones youve owned had plastic screens. the hd2 has a glass screen that is less prone to scratches, but is more prone to shattering when dropped. a screen protector wont do anything to absorb the shock of a fall and protect it from shattering....nor will a hard shell case. leather or rubber provide the best impact protection.
Shattered screens are very common on the iPhone, as it too has a glass screen...so this isn't something that is unique to the HD2. My wife managed to crack the screen on her old iPhone while it was in a hard plastic case with a screen protector!

There are businesses that have emerged in the past couple of years the focus entirely on iPhone repairs....and fixing screens is probably their biggest source of revenue! so yeah...this isn't anything unique to the HD2.
I know 3 people (4 + my wife) who have managed to crack their iPhone screens. Most of them choose to live with the cracked screen, as the phone will still function as long as the digitizer isn't damaged.
Title says it all. I still have mine, and haven't run into any issues or defects with it. It seems like most folks have had to get theirs replaced at some point. Did I just get lucky?

I still got mine from 1 week after launch day. It has power button and volume button cracks, and it has been dropped several times by myself and my 2 y/o. One time it fell, it was inside the leather case I carry it in but both upper corners remain exposed in my case. Of course, it landed right on one of the two exposed corners (on a cement floor), and broke one of the clips that hold the phone together. So now, my Evo looks like this:

I put a quarter in there so you can see how much of a gap there is, but I did pry it open a bit for a more dramatic effect. lol Until it stops working perfectly, I'm riding with this phone until it's dead or I get something better.
I had to get my original Evo replaced after around two months.
There was a small horizontal area on the screen that would not produce any touch actions, so it made it difficult to do some activities (there was an important button within the SMS app I used and upon tapping on the button, there would be no executed action). Dragging down the notification bar simply skipped over the dead spot. Dotty also proved the same results.
This was my first problem ever with a phone and I don't see it as being user error. However, my replacement has been great (knock on wood).
still have mine !
My screen started lifting about a month after I had it, so it had to be replaced. I've had the replacement ever since though.
I still have my Launch day EVO. Zero problems. Just a few light marks on the edges because of a stupid cheap protective case.
2nd evo here, got my I/o evo in may few months later no more keys now on 004 hardware
On my 2nd..My screen started lifting about a month after I had it, so it had to be replaced.
Rock Solid Since Lauch Day
Bought mine at 9am launch day. Still perfect. Crack on powerbutton. Screen protector immediately and seidio innocase 360 with holster from day 1. Best Phone I ever owned. Can't wait to see what my next upgrade will do.
In true, what goes up must come down - my phone went up ... and came back down - with a thud!
I attached my GS2 to an RC quadcopter using an array of balsa and hard wood, cable ties and foam and took to the skies. Since this is my phone, I have to rebuild a camera mount each time I fly and yesterday and today, I've had 4-5 flights with jello-wobble vibration video - and over beautiful fields too .. anyway, this was my third camera mount of the day and it worked! It did work... before it fell...
the RC quad it as attached to had the camera mount broken (I can make another), two broken props, and some nylon standoffs - on and a carbon fibre rod and LOTS of cable ties!
Sadly, an animal was harmed in the making of this video... a slug (or snail), jad a 1kg+ weight fall out of the sky directly upon it. I'm sorry - at least it was quick!
Oh, and the phone? Fine! Not a scratch or noticable fault - auto focus still works You can see the whole flight ...
I've not had much luck embedding on here so just in case ..

It landed on grass and soil, doubtless that would have cushioned the impact. If it was solid concrete it will probably do worse.
My heart almost stopped watching it fall, and fall, and fall...Ouch.Madman.
When it hit the floor I farted.
got a big ding on the side after it fell to concrete blocks, i think i should be more careful now

Nice video.
Thanks for the great comments everyone.
Almost 24 hours later and I can find no fault with the phone. It was in a silicone case (one that wraps around the phone completely), encased in packing foam and then secured to a light wood mount. Unless the phone took a direct hit on something sharp, the only thing that would affect it is the inertia of the falling and sudden stop. Although I think when it was upside down, it was accelerating downwards!
The quad has breaking points such as the "feet" i made and just tied on. Mainly through ease but they've proved invaluable! Many ties reduce the impact and "break the fall" hopefully saving the quad and phone!
From yesterday, as far as I can tell, there's no damage to the phone. The only damage this phone has incurred was when I used an inferior case which didn't protect the top on my first or second flight and the quad arm vibrated a notch in the front .. GUTTED!
I don't have a reliable way of tracking the altitude yet but I think it was higher than 30m - though I could be wrong. Maybe 100m? Any suggesions and theories to the estimated height? Ideally, I'd like a GPS logger which was capable of running in the background and 1s intervals... Even just height
Looking forward for more vids.

It's hard to jugde the hight from the video. The recordings can trick you somethimes. But it's definetly more than 30m, maybe up to 100.
I regulary fly rc-sailplanes(5m wing span) and somethimes over 1000m (measured with a unit called Piccolario that transmits the height via VHF
You can't trust GPS hight readings.
You have to buy the new S3 that has a barometer

On a positive note, the quad is rebuilt and seems to be flyable (only tested slighty in my house). After a test flight and new camera mount, I'll be out making my phone fly again. All going well, there'll be more videos to come...

Speaking of the phone, it has been performing fine (although, I'm not sure my HSPDA/3G connectivity is faulty because of phone antenna jolt or provider problems (TalkMobile). Still testing. It connects, just sometimes doesn't.

So, Im not a regular user, but I always read the forum and I thought it might be a good idea to share you this since almost nobody has reported that their back cover is lifting up, as it used to be a common failure on the original XZ (I own one) and not as common on en XZ3c.
Well, I bought the phone on January 11 and it was perfect, it passed the pressure test and had no problems, but on February 28 I realized that the phone didn't passed ir anymore, and then checked the watermark on de downside flap and it was red, and then WOW!! I Didn't even submerged my phone into water, I had just used a bit of water from a glass to clean it off, so it had no sense, well I said, nevermind is not waterproof anymore and is working great, it doesnt matter...
And Yesterday I was looking at the phone and realized the back cover is slightly lifted up on the camera corner, and if i press on that side and run the pressure test It works like a charm...
So thats it, Im raking it to Sony tomorrow, hope they tell me something legit and fix it or replace it.
P.S I dont use my phone as a game center, I dont have any game, heavy app, or record 4k video that might have heaten up the device and melt the glue on the back cover, I really think is a deffective unit.

You should be okay as in either getting a replacement or getting your device fixed without any costs, because there is no damage to the device and it's possible that the adhesive can let go.:good:
Yeah, bad luck unfortunately. Return it to Sony, hope you get it fixed/replaced quickly.
Good Luck!

Is... is that a cleaning cloth the phone is resting on?
Because there's still finger prints all over it, you could've used it to wipe the thing! Icky kicky all those smudges.
My money is on a faulty battery. It could puff up a bit and cause enough stress to lift the glass. If that's the case I would power the device off, leave it off, and don't attempt to charge it till it's been serviced/corrected or it could result in fire/explosion/injury/death...
At any point did you discharge the battery to the point where the phone turned itself off?

I Never discharged my phone below 20-30%, actually most of the days I arribad home on a 50% and charge it BEFORE I go to bed so it doesnt get overcharged during night charge... Im really careful with my phones I think is just defective, probably the heaviest app I had installed was Facebook... And Nerflix (which I never used).
Today I left the phone at Sony under warranty, I have to go in 10 days to get it back fixed or a new phone, depends what Sony says.
It happened to me to. They fixed it pretty fast, no questions asked

Glad to hear that! Did they replaced the back cover, glued the old one or replaced your phone?
Believe it or not, they replaced everything BUT the back cover!
So they changed digitizer, flaps and the frame (both the glossy part and frosted plastic part).
Also they unlocked my phone to all networks and made my bootloader unlockable.
So it was a winwin situation

Legit. Next time my wheel get removed from my car, I'll leave it on the ground and will put a new car right where my wheel is standing. It's safer.
Sony acts in strange ways
Well! Today I went to pick up my phone, and they replaced it with a brand new unit! Thanks Sony!
