Heres a question for u: is it possible to connect to my exchange server using activesync via an RPC over HTTP connection? Currently i have to dial a VPN connection before connecting which is rather cumbersome (having to dial and it frequently drops). It is available in Outlook and is much more efficient. Cheers.
I am assuming that you are running an exchange 2K3 SP2 and Windows Server 2K3 SP1 right off the bat. If you are not this info may not apply.
When you install Exchange 2003, several virtual directories are created under the Default Web Site in Internet Information Services (IIS).
One of those is "Microsoft-Server-Active-sync" If I am not mistaken this is what your PPC uses when syncing. So you don't need to setup your PPC to use RPC over HTTP like you would outlook (with the http address, and the internal server name, and the MSSTD crap). Check to make sure your front end server (Web server) has that virtual directory in the default web site. If not, there are quite a few tutorials on Google that you can look up.

According to Microsoft, Global Address Lookup is supported in the Exchange Server version that provides the push email that so many of us are enjoying. However, it does not appear to work as documented on the 8525 unit... According to Microsoft:
"Support for over-the-air lookup of global address list (GAL) information stored on Exchange Server. With the Messaging and Security Service Pack, mobile device users will be able to receive contact properties for individuals in the GAL. These properties can be used to search remotely for a person quickly based on name, company, and/or other aspect. Users will get all of the information they need to reach their contacts without having the data store on their device."
Has anyone figured out how to access the GAL from their 8525? At this point, the only way to use a contact record from the corporate Exchange server is by copying it to "Outlook Contacts" and then using the wireless sync to retrieve that particular contact record... There does not appear to be any way to "search" the GAL from within the Contacts application on the 8525 (such as the method described By Microsoft)
Does one need to download and install the "Global Contact Access for Pocket PC Phone Edition" application that Microsoft lists on their web site?

I have an 8525 and I'm just going into Contacts. If I type in the name of someone in my office GAL and not in my contacts list, the result is "No matches: **** <Find Online>" Click Find Online and the results will be from your office GAL. I have nothing special installed on the Hermes. Just the backend server has to be Exchange 2003 SP1.
PS, I tried installing the MS "Global Contact Access for Pocket PC" and never got it to work. IIRC, it complained about my self signed server cert.
Bizarre! The behavior you describe is exactly how Microsoft's documentation says it should,but my 8525 does not behave this way.
For now, I have installed the "Power Toy" from Microsoft, but its definitely not as "clean" as using the stock setup. Can you see "Free/Busy" information when setting up a meeting?
Been playing with a couple of T-Mobile Wing devices for evaluation as an offered product for our corporate customers...
My team has found a few flaws right out of the box everyone should be aware of:
1. Attachments sent from Outlook 2003 to a POP email account accessed by the Wing will not show up on the wing unless the user who created the message and the attachment selects "Plain Text" in Outlook. Very annoying for all Outlook based companies.
2. File Explorer will not connect to any network resource via Wi-Fi even if the user puts in an explicit IP address and share name as follows: \\10.0.0.7\SharedDrive
Permissions on the shared folder do need to be set to Everyone and Full Access if the device accessing the share is not a domain user. None the less, the Wing will respond with "The network path cannot be found" despite being pingable from the device hosting the share.
3. Synchronizing contacts and email to Outlook via ActiveSync and a USB cable has been quite reliable with no observed limitations however synchronizing a calendar for 3 months forward & back is simply not possible. It'll hang ActiveSync (wcescomm) on the host PC every time even with as few as 20 calendar entries in Outlook behind and ahead of the current date. This was tested very thoroughly on Windows XP, 2000 Pro and Vista with multiple Wing devices as it was a deal killer for our customers.
So far we're holding off on allowing these or recommending these to our users. We still recommend the XDA IIs for people that really need this type of functionality.
When you are setting up a new server source in AS, it has some options for doing things automatically (I assume based on our email domain name). This has never worked for me (I am the sys admin for our Windows network). Do I have to be running Exch2007 to get this functionality, or is it some sort of DNS issue that is making this fail? The front-end server that we use is not mail.domain.com We use webmail.domain.com.
Any thoughts are appreciated. We are going to be allowing our users to bring their own service and devices to our cell phone mix, and I want to make connecting with WM devices as easy as possible. I'm trying to reduce the number of blackberry devices we use.

Microsoft Exchange 2007 Autodiscovery
Autodiscovery allows a user to enter their email address and password into Outlook 2007 or Windows Mobile 6 Pocket Outlook to have their profile or activesync relationship automatically configured to access an Exchange 2007 server.
In short, you add a DNS record for the host "autodiscover" in the domain you want to use Autodiscovery in. If you want it to work internally just add it to your company's DNS server. If you want it to work externally you have to add it to your external DNS server.
One important note is that you must have a multi-domain SSL certificate from a known public provider. This is because you need 4-hosts on the certificate (2-domains with 2-hosts each) I purchased a multi-domain certificate from GoDaddy.com for $58 for 1-year.

Since I've had this phone I've failed to sync with the Sync Centre. It just results in errors every time.
However, because I will be syncing everything that will be on my exchange server, how can I set up this exchange server on the X1? I don't mean the email address only, I need it to connect to my exchange calender, contacts, mail - everything.
I sync to my exchange server via mail2web with no problems - keep in mind if you are syncing to a pc as well you need to select only one location for calendar & contacts.
Isn't it possible to put in the exchange server details directly into teh phone without using 3rd party software?
Is it true that vodafone have removed the exchange feature from their handset?

you don't need 3rd party to set up exchange activesync, it's out of the box.

this is relating to the SSL. Either you have setup an activesync w/o SSL connection, or your PDA clock might be wrong that makes the SSL certificate invalid.
That's assuming your exchange server side is okay.
I've just discovered that everything part from mail will sync if I don't specify my exchange in Vista. When I do that's where the errors show up.
As for exchange on the phone, I will get "network waiting" when I disable SSL. This actually appears to be an issue with many WM devices. What do you mean when you say my clock might be wrong?
The simple Version:
Authentication inside of Active Directory runs over "Tickets" for every User. If the clocks between 2 Ressources are too tifferent, the Ticket becomes invalid, cause the time is an important component of the encryption.
The savest way is to let the phone sync its clock with the exchange server - after Active Sync configuration
For doing this you only need working SSL-encrypted "Outlook Web Access" and your Exchange account have to be "Active Sync"-enabled (an admin has to do this).
Windows Mobile shows you all information yout need to set Active Sync up.

At the moment I am syncing everything from outlook on my pc, not directly to the server as the device was designed to do
Mine works with my Exchange 2007 server without a problem, out of the box. I just entered my server address, my domain username and password.
Are you sure the server is set up correctly. The exchange server has to have OMA (Outlook Mobile Access) set up. Are there any other devices syncing with the server correctly? Is port 443 open?
Something to note I had to install the security certificate of the server on my phone before it could sync.
I use mine with an Exchange 2007 too. After installing the server
all the necessary features are turned on automatically:
- OWA (Outlook Web Access - website)
- OMA
- Active Sync user role for every account
The OWA-website has to be accessible for public. And the server certificate (for SSL) has to be installed if it is selfsigned
(it is if your browser shows a certificate warning on computers
outside of the company network). Copy it from the browser to
your phone and (double)click it for install. Alternativly ask your network administrator for help.
If the cert is bought from an official worldwide trusted cert
seller like thawte or verizon this should not be neccessary.
