Trinity Questions - P3600 General

I am (along with 3 others from work) thinking of getting the trinity (HTC P3600) phone. The fact it is a pda and phone and has gps all in one is the main reason.
Because it is shipped with windows mobile 5 does the gps work straight from the box? (I have tomtom navigator 6 ready to go on it) Or does I need to download and install an upgrade on the phone/rom? Basically why do no specification charts mention the gps? See for example - http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_p3600-1694.php
I have heard that originally htc shipped it with the gps receiver in the phone but it was not active - they then relented and issued a rom upgrade which allowed it to be made active. Is this correct and if so why did they not originally ship it with the gps working? And also if so are they now shipped with the rom update so the gps works?
Can one get windows mobile 6 and put it on the phone? Why is it still shipped with windows mobile 5 and not 6?
Any help would be appreciated to a newbie!

If your get a device manufactured in April 2007 or later, you're likely to have WM5 with GPS out of the box. If it was manufactured before then, you have an option to upgrade it with official WM5 ROM with GPS support.
If you want WM6, check WM6 topic on this forum... It is not officially available.

I am in the market as well. I can't seem to find any white ones. My black one died and I am not going to reinvest in a device when the coating peels off.
Some dealers are saying that you have to update the ROM after purchasing. Looks like they have old stock. I think the new ones ship with the GPS ROM but I have yet to confirm this.
I am glad they don't ship with WM6 yet. There are some new features but WM5 is tested and stable and does everything I need. If I had Exchange 2007, I would want WM6.

All devices sold after February 2007 by Orange or Dopod should have the GPS enabled ROM.
Some dealers are still selling HTC P3600 with the original ROM, and a CD of the HTC update, but buying direct from HTC should get a genuine GPS ROM.
It beats me why most of the resellers still don't list GPS as a feature (even Orange, though they include a paper insert in the box advertising their [awful] online based Navigation system)
When the P3600 was first being tested, some users reported problems with 3G reception when GPS was active. HTC disabled the GPS while they investigated, rather than delay the launch. Orange and Dopod didn't apparently have any issues hence they were earlier with the GPS ROM. Some pre-production Orange M700's were sold to the public without GPS, but Orange have replaced them on request.

Poxy TomTom crap as usual!!!!

I have had a guts full of TomTom's crap. Their support is a joke.
I have legitimately bought all their software (paying twice for GB) I have bought their traffic plug-ins. But because an O2 repair was given a new device code I've gone 6 months without my navigation.
I got in touch & was told to send proof of purchase, I was about to upgrade to an XDA IIi so I waited, I then sent this e-mail with all my product codes & an A4 scan of my new contract :-
Please guys,
I have recently upgraded from an XDA II to an XDA IIi and although I've uninstalled previous versions of Nav3 & traffic each time I try to re-install I get a message saying ' you have not installed any voice files, I've tried zip versions too. I also need an unlock code as I've changed my phone again.
I have seen in another question that there exists an upgrade disk for versions using 2003SE which seems to have a seperate voice files, do I need this disk?
Or would I be better off waiting for Nav5 upgrade? (tho this would mean no navigation during my present 2 month+ tour of Europe)
Will the Nav3 maps work with Nav5?
I then got this reply :-
Response 13/04/2005 03.31 PM
Dear Mr R,
1. Run the installation CD and select Change voice promts, You can install from there.
2. This software has already been installed/activated on two different PDAs .To comply with the terms of the software licenece. Please fax a proof of purcahse of the new PDA. ( sorry we are unable to read the scanned attachment propelry) to +31 20 850 1097
3.Navugator 3 maps will not be Nav 5 compatible. However an upgrade will be happening in the new couple of weeks, More information will appear on our website in the coming few weeks.
With best regards,
The TomTom Customer Support Team
I'm going to try to get our Advertising & Trading Standards Board onto them, after the amount I've paid for this unreliable rubbish, it's completely unacceptable to have to be put through 'hoops of fire' to be able to use my own programme (I bought it, & all it's accessories, it's mine, isn't it?)
Sorry guys I'm ranting again! F*@%$#ng TomTom! I can't believe I'm saying this :-
Microsoft & their £40 Autoroute 2005 hve been my saviour! I just said something good about Microsoft!!!! :? :?
It may be some solace that the upgrade to TTN5 is imminent and this will effectively reset your install count. You will get TTN5, the latest UK map and a free upgrade to Maps Of Western Europe for a very very reasonable fee.
I know the install protection is a PITA but its there because earlier versions were widely pirated (although its done nothing to stop piracy of V3!).
It was exactly because of this problem that the keygens were produced, I have legit copies of tomtom 2 and 3 but still had to use third party hacks so i could use it when i upgraded roms or changed/upgraded pda.

Vodafone Live on XDAlli

Hi, My company as moved from O2 to Vodafone and I now have a 3G SIM card and have unlocked my XDAlli. how ever as most will know it's very hard to get a bluetooth headset working with the XDA and now I am having major phone lock ups to the point I currently carry a Nokia as a phone and my XDA as a PDA. Is there a work around to get the 3G SIM working and to stop it crashing all the time???
The current set up is
ROM 1.11.00 WWE
Radio 1.04.00
Protocol 1337.42
I run this as non O2 but it still loads some O2 junk eg the MIDlet Manager, O2 Music Player.
I run TomTom 5.1 as I don't like the 5.21 version as it reduces your POI. but the unit will just lock up as you drive down the road as it searches for the next phone cell. If I turn the phone off tomtom runs great.
A lot of questions and I hope that you all have some of the answers.
Thanks and keep up the great work.
ftp://xda:[email protected]_Radio-1.04_O2stuffstripped_Camera_Fixed.rar
Try this file, it has all the O2 ****e removed and some people claim it works better with Tomtom, can't test it myself as I still have no SD card to put the maps on.
It also has improved and enhanced BT profiles which may or may not help.
About the 3G sim I don't know if it's down to the phone not being compatible or wether it's just the unstable O2 Active software etc.
Try it, what have you to lose?
Don't forget to backup contacts first, it's amazing the amount of people who forget.
Thanks for that I have loaded and re-loaded TomTom 5.21 and with my orange pay as you go sim all seams to be working will as have just brought my little one to a party. And no lock ups on the way with the phone on I might even look at changing back to the Vodafone sim card in a day or two once I know all is good.
I will now upgrade the two other XDAlli's we have at work on Monday and see if they have the same great inprovment.
Rom Update
The latest O2 rom "171" from the myxda site seems to be stable and certainly works well for me with both Bluetooth headset and GPS/TomTom as well as working better in the BURY car kit. I have no problems with Vodafone on the 2i.

Australian DOPOD GPS ROM

Anyone know what's happening with this? Dopod seems to have released GPS roms for every other area.
thanks
got an email back from them tuesday- they are currently testing the new WM6/GPS ROM. Just waiting for phone companies to give it the all ok.
hopefully within a few weeks.
Can you post a copy of the email your receive from them ?
Here is what I recieved a few days ago
Dopod is planning to release a new rom code for the D810 within the next 2 months pending approval from Optus, 3 Mobile & Vodafone.
The New Rom Code with allow existing D810 users to upgrade to Windows Mobile 6 operating system and it will also enable the D810 embedded GPS Antenna feature.
Once a user upgrades their D810 to the WS6 rom code all they need do is purchase Mapping software like – Co-pilot, Route 66 etc and install it into their device and they will be able to enjoy GPS navigation on the D810.
Note – A D810 with the new GPS rom code does not need an extenal antenna – the antenna is inbuilt.
The upgrade is planned to be available on the Dopod ANZ website pages at no charge to D810 customers.
We are also planning to release new models later this year and there will be a different version of the D810 made available for Mobile Operators Optus, 3 Mobile & Vodafone to offer.
We have not formally released any details of the changes to market other than there are some increases in the devices memory size and improvement to the CPU speed.
To date no Mobile Operator has decided to range or support.

the rom you need
you can disable the asian default on it and its ok for the rest of the world
jeakins, I have heard from some sites that if you use that rom we in australia get bad reception.
I'm with optus, what about u? any problems with yours?
dopod rom
to viperx
i have been using it for while now and ist the best rom i have ever seen and never had any problem with it , it solved most of problems, try it . the only alteration you have to do is remove the message comes in the beggining regarding the net work which only gives you set up for asia , just close it and it never comes back again , also you have to set it up manually for mms and internet.
Hi,
I have been using the ROM with GPS on Optus, and had no issues, reasonable GSM/3G reception, and GPS works with TomTom 6.
I have noticed the Optus Zoo wep pages don't work (but I never use them anyway). All other wep/web sites work fine via Optus internet or via the built in WiFi.
Regards
im using the latest trinity rom with gps and tomtom..
sometime it locks up.
i really need wm6

That's the same email they sent me almost TWO MONTHS ago.
yeah- i dont trust them to bring it out any time soon- back at the start of march i got a reply that said about 2wks, and then a couple of months ago they told me in a month or so..... i couldnt wait and just installed a cooked rom from here....
a recent post on Whirlpool forums said 5 weeks time...but again, grain of salt...
i'm running the Asian GPS-enabled ROM

Just got XDA Trion from O2 UK with WM6 installed

Got a unit the other day that was used, so they sent me out a replacement, and it has WM6 installed - YAY!
Just waiting for my Micro SD card to arrive to see if I can load TT6 onto it (whihc could be a problem!)
I guess ROM updates must be due shortly for the rest?
http://www.my-xda.com/xdaOrbitSoftware.html
ignore, its for the orbit not the hermes
tonyflow, that's interesting! I ordered an XDA Trion from O2 UK today. They were out of stock for a little while, so this must be a new batch. I wonder what OS they'll have installed...
Will report back!
The first unit I got (which was already used - which I was not happy about) was WM5, called their customer services, and they got a replacement out to me the next day - the box had a manual addition for WM6 - and when I powered the device on it was confirmed
I knew that O2 Germany had a ROM update for WM6, but wasnt aware of O2 UK having it! Saves me the hassle of upgrading and then trying to relicense tomtom in the future anyways
I got mine at the beginning of July and it has WM5 on it
I wonder if it would be easy to upgrade and if all the programs I have on it would still work.....
Anyway, I have sent them an email as to why the Trion is mot mentioned on the my-xda site (I became aware of it a while back when someone posted the seeo2.com for malaysian customers and I looked for the english version and re-visited it when it was mentioned on el-reg). Just hope a WM6 update is forthcoming....
Well, just called O2 as I saw the order had "Provisioning Failed" by it on their website. Turns out that they're out of stock - why they couldn't of told me this when I bought it I don't know - and it's contrary to what it says on their online store. So maybe, if I get a unit from yet another new batch, the chance of having WM6 increases?

Is the AT&T Pure the Topaz?

I just switched to AT&T from Verizon and purchased the HTC Pure. Is this the same as the Topaz? I thought the Pure was the next gen of the Touch Diamond2.
Also, if you know, does GPS work out the box or would I need to update the Radio and ROM? I don't have the phone just yet because I ordered it a few hours ago, but I want to know because I have a month to test it out and see if I want to keep it.
I came from having an HTC Titan for quite some time so I'm pretty used to flashing new ROM and such, but I don't want to mess with the new phone too much in those first 30 days -incase I need to return it.
Thanks.
The Pure is a re-cased Topaz. Hardware (internal) wise they are identical. It's AT&T's brand name (Like the Himalaya being an XDAII on O2, MDA 1000 on Orange).
The Tilt 2 is the HTC Touch Pro 2.
The GPS should work out the box with Google Maps. You'll need to install mapping software if you want voice prompts etc.
Shiny!
So Is there a TomTom app for the phone (possibly free)?
Also how good of a reception would you say the FM radio gets?
