Reversing the slide direction - 8525, TyTN, MDA Vario II, JasJam General

I looked at the
www.htcamerica.net site, and appearently, the 8525 slide direction can be reversed. Click on the Sliding Querty link within the flash control to see what I mean.
Can anyone shed light on how to accomplish this?
XC

????
The Hermes shown there slides in the same direction as all others!?!

lol. you cant reverse it unless you're REALLY good with plastic injection molding

Umm... I don't see any abnormal sliding direction. You are probably looking at other models.

Hahaha! This reminds me of the refrigerator that opens on the left and right..

Expect that those "fridges" have the threaded holes on both sides of
the cabinet. I have seen a few Hermes units where if you have the KB
open you will have the ear piece on the right side as you type away.
I would HIGHLY doubt that any of these units have the ability to "swing
both ways". Just look at the shape of the two halves and you
will see why.

Might buy a Advantage ...... good idea ?

hi, guys, Im looking to buy a HTC Advantage but not sure if i should.
Right now i own a Hermes, the only thing bothering me is that if i will be able to use it on trains and stuff, (send emails/sms) since it doesn't have a thumb board like the hermes (the only reason i want the Advantage is bigger screen and CPU 624Mhz), im just wondering if on screen input with your fingers is possible without third party software ?

don't really understand why you ask this. Advantage has a keyboard, which makes it easy to type compare to Hermes. You shouldn't worry about the typing, although it's lacking a number row, the typing is still better then Hermes.
From spect (I don't have it yet) athena far better than hermes
so do you mean can i use the hardware keyboard on trains and in places where a flat surfaceis not available like in my hand? or if not is the software keyboard on the screen good ? can I type on it with my thumbs ?

The on-screen keyboard is big enough for your thumb Remember the athena has 5 inch screen, so everything on it is big It covers almost the lower half of the screen.
can one of you guys please post a screen shot ? it would make it a lot easier for me to decide if i actually saw the on screen keyboard

with some time and practice, you can type the hard keyboard without a flat surface easily.
wow cool sounds gooood !
Whats your ring size?

Hi LK
Just checked your question on my Athena, I can tell you the screen keyboard is just 3" (75mm) wide and to do it on the tube with my fingers-impossible without multiple errors. BUT maybe your ring size is like a childs, then maybe you'd succeed. The good news is I tried thumb operate with hardware keyboard and--well lets say I give it the thumbs-up! s'cuse the pun. The magnetic hold is really strong so it aint gonna drop off, you can hold it upside down and shake it, still holds on. Caution don't put it on sensitive magnetic media or it could corrupt data, eg cassette tapes (remember them) hard discs, caddy, laptop etc.
But for a phone/pda your Hermes is a gr8 bit of kit, so compact and useable. I rate the athena as a pda then a phone if you get my drift. Hope you get one and enjoy, also save ur eye strain!
Cheers
Oh an after thought-dont wear steel rings with this one, ya could get locked onto it!
Isn't the keyboard detatchable and attached only by a magnet? How good is it to type while on your hands? Doesn't it increase the risk of a major floor wipe out?

Yes quite practical to type on hard kb with fingers when Athena in hand. The Keyboard is attached by the magnets only. its amazing but however u try to mis-align it, the thing zaps into the right place! only the mag holds it on, nowt else. If the mag wears out after a year I'll also trade in the alternator off my car but have to wait and see
Cheers
Oh yea,
A SOBERING THOUGHT : If the earths magnetism wears out we'll all hurtle into outer space -- yikes!!

something loose

Hello.
Does any of yours hd2s make weird sound when you tap on them? Like there's something loose in the upper end of the device.. I guess it has something to do with back speaker.. It makes the sound even when I put it on the table.. It's nothing serious, but it makes me wonder what is wrong with it It's like piece of plastic hit another piece of plastic.. :s
Only bottom hardware keys are a bit loose, and that applies for all units. But other than that, all should be nice and firm, no sounds.
..
Nope, only the sound of my ninja quick fingers tapp'in that screen. Sounds like you do actually havee something loose in your device. : /
it's not like when i just use the touchscreen, but when i tap it with my fingers around the area where camera is.. on the backside.

I get it too, but it's so slight that I imagine it's just the shutter. It's not rattling round or anything - just loose enough to be able to move when needed.
exactly. thanks =)
Nope, i just almost had my whole face down to listen carefully, but mine makes no loose sound in any way.. strange.. in a good way tho..

Your shutter must be fused. I'd send it back to HTC for repair lol
The volume key on the side moves slightly and so do the buttons on the front, it's probably these which rattle from time to time.

The volume keys on mine are rock solid, and I can only move my hardware buttons by actually touching them and moving them - they don't move enough to rattle.
I agree with the OP - there's a really tiny (insignificant) rattle from around the camera area. Like I said earlier, I don't think it's anything wrong or worth worrying about.

There is a varying build quality to these handsets. You sound to be one of the lucky ones but I've had two now and one had a loose volume button, as does my mate's. The depth of the recess with the screen fit and the front keypad wobble and how tactile the keypress is also vary in quality.

Yeah - I should have made it clear that I wasn't saying those issues don't exist, but that they don't for me, but I get what the OP is getting at.

Some video from CNN :D

Just got this in my work email from my Sprint rep
http://money.cnn.com/video/technology/2010/04/19/t_tt_4g_sprint_evo.cnnmoney/
CNN did an article on 4G and they used the pre-released EVO which means it will be here really soon I hope.. pretty cool check it out

What's with the random audio transitions that pop up?
Regardless of that, it's nice to see an EVO in action.

I know that the HTC Droid Incredible doesn't have the same multitouch problem as the N1/Desire. So maybe the same could be said for the EVO as well.
Those optical cables must have some crazy bandwidth to support internet for that many people... yeah that demo of the phone was horrible. still, it's the best phone as of now, cant wait, im getting it first day

side note.. it supports up to 10.2" but she is on a >30" screen.

From what I can gather, it looks like:
Angle touch is -- touching the device at an angle... Instead of using a stylus to go straight down (90 degrees) to accept, it supports angle touching..
Size touching - it measures the size of what is touching the screen. So you touch with a thumb vs a stylus, it measures the surface areas of the two.
I could be wrong though..

that is just silly for it not to do this... who would use the stylus or finger or anything in a 90degree angle? It is normally the point of contact that it registers. So I am guessing there is something else to this, and refers to some future benefit, but I cant think of any.
all just speculation on my part.

Not necessarily. I don't mean an exact 90 degree angle, but rather, a straight touch, and not picking up other parts of the screen...
But you're right, all speculation.
I thought it meant it can sense the angle at which something touches it. So it can tell if it's coming in at 45 or 90 degrees... Could be wrong though.
Sense angle?
How could it do that? A point of contact is just a point correct? To determine angle you would have to go through layers of detection right? A point on top layer compared to a point on a subsequent layer could determine angle, or a camera (multiple/3d) could sense angle, but how could a pad sensing a point (multiple points) on its surface determine angle?

Well... My guess is they do it by the diameter and shape of the sensed finger. It's not actually just a point. It's usually circular and they find the center point and use that. Your touch is generally far bigger than 1px. That's also how they can tell how hard you push down. Harder you push, the bigger the diameter. If you push on an angle, the shape distorts as well. It's not perfect, but I've seen it used. I forget where though.

shape recognition?
wow, never thought of that. Seems like too many variables to work well though.

Acer Iconia Microphone Location

Does anybody know where EXACTLY the microphone is located, I mean does anyone have like some blueprints or fcuking x-rays or something?
There must be a way to give it more space, but WHERE EXACTLY IS IT?
If anyone know exactly were then put up a picture with a red arrow pointing to the MoFo.
Cheers.
Edit: I'll drill a fcuking whole if I have too I swear. I mean this machine has pretty much everything! And then they go and screw the microphone up... Fcuking crazy.
Its in the middle at the top between the screen and the plastic bezel
Sent from my HTC HD2 using XDA Premium App
its between the glass and alumn at top
The first you can see if you look along the top of the glass the second is undertab where the men card goes
Update. I had to take my tab apart due to loose video cable.while I had it open I looked around .the Mic is under the small hole at the SD card cover.I know this first hand im not sure but I believe thee are two other as I. Posted above.others say its there in top of screen as well
Damn that's a small hole. On Skype & Google search it works alright but not great. If you drill the hole let us know & be careful . Maybe 1/16" or 1/32". I also on looking at the space between the screen & case that that area is a dust magnet.
Thanks dudes, im gonna find out more and come back to you. I migh unsolder the ****er and move it to the back solder it and make a nice hole with tiny bars.
Cheers!
so did anyone found a fix for the freakin mic? I was so happy with the tablet but will be going back if the mic problem persists....

I love my A500, but I absolutely despise the poor microphone functionality. I have tested it by repeating the same phrases, but altering the position of the tablet. If I am speaking directly into the top hatch (open), it does a decent job of recognizing my voice. Close the hatch and it still does an ok job. Speak towards the bottom of the tablet (away from the top) and the voice recognition fails miserably. The (lack of) pickup is pretty evident in the voice recorder and camcorder applications.
It's very frustrating that the voice to text basically cannot work on this tablet because of the microphone. Unless you yell or speak into the top of the unit that is....
If you take yours back, what would you get?
edit: I checked the asus forum and found a thread that makes it appear the microphone is not very good on the transformer either.
Rob
good point
there really aren't many options in Canada for this price range.
The new samsung tab 10` may be an option given its sucesses with the galaxy s series of phones.
I wonder if Acer support gave any options for a fix....?

Phone accessory

Hi, Maybe this should be in the accessories section but I did it myself, It's not much and I know that so not criticism unless it is constructive please.
This isn't criticism.
What exactly is the advantage to having that "ring" (for lack of a better term) around just the face of the phone? It seems like it would be more useful around the back of the phone.

There is what is called "bumper cases" which are pretty much just a ring to protect the corners and make a small gap between the screen and the floor or any level horizontal surface so if you drop it, it will hopefully not break your phone screen or corners. This one fails a bit at the later but I imagine keeps the corners slightly protected.
Ok

OK, I really hope that wasn't sarcasm because I have watched too much of the big bang theory to notice sarcasm anymore lol!!!
My Dad actually works in the cellphone case business so I may actually have some good insight, the one real popular feature as of late is the incorporation of a wallet into the case. So if you could work that with a bumper in an otherwise then accessory that would be pretty awesome
